A fabulous restaurant. Excellent food, extensive wine menu, and fun staff. Importantly, and unlike many of the restaurants you'll find about town these days, it is spacious inside, which means you can actually take mid-to-large sized groups (as long as you book in advance). The interior is beautiful and lovingly put together with authentic art and materials on the walls. Mixed review of this restaurant, so I'll do my best to break down what we liked and didn't like. Nice interior with outdoor seating, as well. It was a beautiful evening, and we had reservations, but were told we couldn't sit outside because there wasn't an available "2 topper." (Although we could see many tables for four open.) Service was mediocre at best. We had to ask the young man pouring water to find our server after waiting almost 10 minutes to order. She was inattentive throughout and seemed more concerned with whether our bill (and tip) would justify her service. Now for the food: we ordered the Mahko Spreads (3 dollops of spreads and a few pieces of bread) to start. We enjoyed one, the other two were just okay. Then we shared the Pkhlovini (flatbread filled with spinach, herbs, and cheese) and the Chicken Kebab. The chicken kebab plate consisted of 4 chunks of grilled chicken and a side slaw. The slaw was pretty good, but the chicken was bland. I love chicken kebabs and this was one of the worst I've ever had, in terms of flavor. Tasted like nothing but chicken - lacked seasoning and flavor. The highlight of the meal was the Pkhlovini. It was flavorful and delicious. We would like to give this place another try. We'll concentrate on the stuffed breads and also try the soup dumplings, which we saw others enjoying, if we return. read more

It's like we were their first customers ever. The ladies at the front were very nice, but the manager was very rude to them in front of us. We arrived at 9:55am and they opened at 10am for brunch. It was 15 degrees out, so the hostess let us in out of the cold. While waiting, the manager berated the hostess for letting us in, using expletives as well. This was happening 5 feet away from us. He obviously didn't care if we heard. The staff was inattentive and the food was marginal at best. We will not be coming back. read more

This was a dining adventure for us, never having food from this region. We didn't know what to expect but were very pleased by the well-prepared & delicious food. We had many of the vegetarian dishes and there are wonderful choices, especially the cold appetizers. The lamb kebabs were also tasty. The walnut cake for dessert was also good, not too sweet. The wine was a real adventure,but with the help of our server we chose a very good amber wine, which was dry but flavorful. If I could give it a -1 star, I would! I see that there are others that also came to this restaurant and were greatly disappointed in the lack of service, not even allowing one to sit down. My class of 12 adult students who happen to be from the Caucasus region and I were planning to come here for dinner, but we won't. I made a reservation to come here for dinner and because we spent half an hour looking for a place to park, we obviously came late and when we approached the manager, she said our table was given to someone else. That's it! No apology, no effort on her part to ask us to sit and wait, just plain "no". This is not typical of Georgian hospitality! Having lived and worked in Georgia, I'm very familiar with the fact that Georgians are known for their warmth and hospitality, neither of which is shown in this restaurant. What a shame! read more

M'm. My dining companion had a lot of experience in Georgia, and pointed out especially lovely things on the menu--especially some green or red (I forget, sorry, air travel does that to me) bean paste thing with fenugreek. For meat-eaters, which I was prepared to be to keep things simple, the dumplings are tasty and agreeably messy; there's a special way to eat them that involves using them as a sort of juicy cup. Maybe somewhere there's a vegetarian variety; I'd like to explore that. The wine (crisp and dry, white, what the waiter pointed me to) was excellent. Service was just fine. I came back and ransacked my bookshelves and found a cookbook of allegedly Russian recipes from the 1970s that were actually Georgian and Armenian, and am planning to experiment with it this fall. Its gorgeous Armenian author claims, and rather touchingly backs this up with testimonials from prestigious MDs, that people who eat this stuff live to be over a hundred and keep tending their sheep actively. I'd eat it even if it were notably toxic like, I don't know, traditional Glaswegian pub food? read more

I am Russian coming from the Caucasus region where Georgia is located. I have had Georgian food in Russia on multiple occasions and most recently had it in NYC. Georgian food is my favorite cuisine and I was very excited that Georgian food finally was available in DC. However I was more than disappointed. The food served there has no resemblance with delicious, finger-licking food of Georgia. I have tried 9 dishes and only one (Adjaruli khachapuri) was ok. Besides simply not being delicious, the food is grossly overpriced. FYI the portions are tiny, but it is irrelevant because you don't want to eat it anyway. On top of that, the service is very far from famous Caucasian hospitality. We had a group of 11 people and the waiter seemed to be very annoyed at our requests. He was not knowledgeable about the menu but still insisted on more expensive choices. If you want real Georgian food, I am afraid you will have to go to NYC. read more

Prior to visiting Supra, I had not eaten traditional Georgian food, so everything on the menu was very interesting to me. I visited with a group of friends and our server walked us through the menu, gave us excellent recommendations, and provided us with enough information on the quantity of food to order without over selling. We knew we wanted to try various items from the menu, but I will say the all star of our selections were the soup dumplings. We got both of the daily selections, one meat and one vegetarian. They needed a bit of an explanation on how to properly eat, but once you dive in, they are as good as it gets. The khachapuri was something we all were relatively familiar with (thanks Compass Rose) but it was still a pleasant item to have on the table. It is quite rich, so if you're looking to order more options for the table, this is something that will definitely fill people up. All in all, it was an excellent experience. Since my first visit, I have gone back a number of times with different people. Definitely a place to go and enjoy great food with a group of people who like to taste multiple dishes! read more

a star for the service. very overrated reviews on Yelp. Invited my dutch friend for a dinner and had to apologize at the end for an unpalatable experience. I'm a soviet girl so I can give a fair evaluation to this place. Not even comparable to georgian dishes in Georgia, Russia or former soviet republics. Khachapuri was just ok, the dough was heavy on yeast. Compass Rose makes better version of it. Mushroom Hinkali is just a bad idea, everything was wrong from the dough to stuffing. Grilled eggplant along with other veggies were just soaked in oil and had a funky smell. The only tasty dish was Lobio Kotanshi - the red beans served with pickled red cabbage(delicious), not the little corn bread. Place needs more ambiance. read more

I've lived in Russia and Ukraine (home of many Georgian expats and restaurants) and traveled to Georgia and the food at Supra is on par, with certain total standouts and other dishes which might use a bit more spicing up. On the Supra tasting board for example, the beet phkali was phenomenal and flavorful but the other pkhali were so mild it was hard to pick out the flavor of what you were eating. The cornmeal croquettes (elarji) were fine, but again, very mild in flavor. The warm lobio and kupati sausages were excellent. The eggplant walnut rolls were outstanding. My favorite dish in general, the ajaruli khachapuri, was really well done, though I highly recommend getting a side of their pomegranate sauce (not on the menu) which really brings out the flavor of both the khachapuri and the lobio, which (even in Georgia) can come across as a bit one note otherwise. The kebabs were great, as were the whole grilled fish and the lamb stew (chanakhi) and our rkatseteli (amber/white wine) and saperavi (red) wines were outstanding. I'm not a huge fan in general of khinkali (soup dumplings) but these were very much what I remember them being. One star was taken off for a few service issues and one customer-unfriendly policy: despite the relatively small size of the restaurant and the seemingly large number of servers it was frequently hard to track down someone when we wanted to order more, or ask for the check. Then, we found it troublesome that they won't allow you to pay with more than four credit cards. On the whole though, we would totally go back, but probably not with more than four people at a time. read more

The food was bland and the service alternated from inattentive to flat-out rude. I'd give this place a big fat "meh" and probably won't come back. Ambar is far better. This is a small plates / tapas style restaurant but the small plates are actually microscopic. We held on to a menu thinking we might want to order more at which point a different server came over and complained that we shouldn't have a menu on the table because it might get food on it. Keep in mind these are paper menus that weren't even printed straight. The waitress then picked up the menu and scoffed at us with a snippy comment "and it already is dirty." This restaurant was incredibly disappointing and the service really was terrible even before the rude comments from the woman who wasn't even serving our table. read more

I was really excited to try this restaurant for my birthday but was pretty disappointed. My boyfriend and I had a 6:00 pm reservation. When we checked in with the hostess, the first thing she said was that our table was reserved again at 7:45 and we would need to be finished by then. I have never been greeted so rudely at a restaurant. It should not be the customer's concern to finish their meal in time for the next reservation the restaurant booked. Needless to say, our experience here started very negatively and hung over our heads for the entire meal. The food was ok. I was underwhelmed. "You can't have that because somebody else paid for that so I'm taking that away now" is what we were told as our waitress realized the kitchen staff had brought somebody else's order to our table - and we never touched it, btw; "I'll be back to tell you about the menu", followed by vanishing, then finally "are you ready to order?"; "I'm not going anywhere", than disappearing for about ten minutes. I even got a mean look when replied "black" to her "how do you take your coffee?" question. Attitude, rudeness, sheer lack of politeness...that's what my uncle and I got every single time our waitress came to our table. Bertie. Or Bernie. Who knows...she wasn't keen on letting us know her name. In any case I do wish to forget the - by far - worst service I've ever got in my three years living in DC. We tipped out of respect for the kitchen and hosting team, absolutely impeccable by the way, as well as the food quality and flavor. Shout out to the menu, food presentation and taste! I would definitely go back for the food and wine, but the service was *absolutely dreadful*. This person should not be working as a waitress. Attitude, zero people skills, rudeness...it's unacceptable. It's a risk for Supra to be employing this woman. read more

She then stared us down from the kitchen, and told a hostess that we "didn't give a f*ck" when we didn't get up right away. SUMMARY -- A vegetarian's perspective: Overall, Supra is a lovely experience and an excellent introduction to Georgian cuisine. Although, some dishes can quickly become rich and leave you feeling heavy, the menu offers plenty of options and the food stands on its own. A unique and welcome offering to the DC food scene. AMBIANCE -- First up, looks: The restaurant has a nice modern design with an upscale vibe. Seating outside is lovely during a nice day, and the area is quite spacious which prevents it from becoming too noisy. Overall, very nice but nothing unique here. The staff are very friendly and find opportunities to engage the customers with food (advising how to eat it and offering the customers to help prepare the food). FOOD: The menu is separated into several categories. First, are the hot and cold tapas style dishes, which includes an option for a tasting platter to share with the table. We didn't get much from here. Next are the Khachapuri or traditional Georgian breads typically including egg, butter, and cheese (lots of cheese). Then you have your meat and fish entrees as well as some meat and fish dishes which are made to share. Finally, and perhaps the most enticing section, are the Khinkali or soup dumplings -- with fillings that rotate throughout the season. In a smaller group I'd recommend ordering the dumplings, a Khachapuri, perhaps a shared meat entry for meat eaters, as well as a few hot/cold tapas. We started our meal with the walnut stuffed eggplant nigvzit, which was a good starter dish. The flavor was overwhelmingly smoky eggplant but it was a nice, fresh way to start the meal. Next, were the potato and cheese Khinkali! These were the excellent, moist soup dumplings with a creamy and delicious filling. Our filling didn't quite live up to the "soup" name but this was in no way a flaw. A must have in our opinion (although beware that these are best eaten with your hands and can be messy). Next, we got the famous boat-shaped Ajaruli, toasty bread filled with a raw egg that's mixed in and cooked at the table atop a plentiful bed of cheese. Definitely worth trying and one of the favorites on the menu, especially for people with a penchant for cheese. For us, this was a bit too rich with the butter, oils, and cheese accosting the palate, especially paired with everything else we ordered. Would recommend pairing this was some of the lighter and fresher tapas to balance out the flavors. We also ordered the Lobiani, white-bean filled bread, which we found to be less rich and more palatable. Again, definitely, recommend trying at least one of the excellent Georgian breads, but do beware that the menu can quickly become too rich with its focus on bread, butter, and cheese. In general, the menu was excellent with plenty of options. SERVICE -- Often overlooked: Our server was very friendly and often chatted with us and explained the different dishes and traditional ways of eating them. She was very nice and added to the overall experience. read more

We had a Christmas party on December 21st at the Supra Washington DC location, the food and atmosphere were amazing but we didn't know that this dinner will ruin our holidays. Next day 10 people from our party of 13 got sick with vomiting, stomach pain, headache, temperature, and diarrhea. None of us couldn't enjoy the Christmas dinner with their families since the symptoms stayed for 2-3 days. More than it, two family's members of our coworkers got sick as well after staying in contact with a sick person - it means it's some virus. This is the worse holiday gift we could imagine to get from the restaurant. We are really disappointed on such a poor quality of the food distribution and wouldn't recommend to our friends or anyone to go and get this sickness experiences. read more

I traveled through Georgia a few years back and have been craving hachapuri ever since. For those who don't know, this is basically pizza without sauce, but it's cheese on cheese on cheese, and it's amazing! To start though, the restaurant is very nice - modern with lots of glass and well designed. The staff, from the hostess to our waiter and the busboy were all very responsive and helpful, and our waiter said he was actually from Georgia. In terms of the food, we stopped in on the later end for a bite to try Supra's hachapuri, and we were not disappointed. There are several versions, but we got the large size of the cheese version, that also has additional cheese on top. I would definitely recommend it, but I'm looking forward to trying some of the other types as well! We also tried some of the meat soup dumplings, which aren't IN soup, but rather have soup inside the dumpling with the meat, so be careful cause they'll squirt out! I'm excited to come back and eat here again, and I'm so glad a good Georgian restaurant has come to DC. Go by and try it yourself! read more

Anyone who has tried Georgian food before might be slightly disappointed as a few of the traditional dishes were missing from the menu or were offered as slightly Americanized versions. But overall good food and nice ambiance. Wine selection was superb! But giving 3 starts for horrible attitude and rude behavior by the manager! As someone who likes DC restaurants and has eaten a lot of Georgian food over the years, I was delighted by my evening at Supra, DC. After years of longing for khatchipuri and other delicacies, I am happy that I can eat amazing Georgian food in such a great atmosphere with excellent service. This restaurant only opened very recently. Scrolling through other reviews, I see there were comments about service and seating. Well their management must be reading those reviews and giving feedback because I had no such problems. We were greeted when we arrived and promptly seated. Our waiter was more than ready to explain the menu to use but quickly saw that my friend and I were not novices as we dove straight into pkhali sampler and khatchipuri to start. Pkhali are delicious savory spreads that can be made of things like spinach, or beets, flavored with garlic, or pomegranates or walnuts; all eaten on warm, soft bread with the perfect crust one expects from Georgian bread straight from a stone oven. Supra did something I did not think possible. I hate beets. I really do but they made pkhali with beets so delicious I had to fight my friend over it. Then came the Khatchipuri - really the main reason we came. Many will try to describe khatchipuri. You just need to try it for yourself. Each type reflects the region of Georgia that it originates from. So you are essentially taking a a mini tour of this amazingly interesting country with each bite. The selguni cheese was creamy yet tart. The crust on the khatchipuri had that perfect mouth feel of a thin, warm crust encasing warm dough. We ordered the classic Ajaruli and the Lobiani. Georgia does have a version of lobiani where you add mashed potatoes to the beans inside which I wish they had; but maybe in the future. We moved on to mains even though we were ready to burst. We ordered my favorite lulya kebab while my friend ordered the classic khinkali. The lulya kebab came wrapped in a thin lavash with a side of tkemali - a spice sour damson plum spread. As I spread it onto the ground up spiced meat in the lulya, the flavors hit my tongue and inspired instant happiness. Then the khinkali. You hold the khinkali by the know on top. You bite into the side and slurp before you eat the dumpling. The broth inside was salty and full of awesome flavor and the meat was a great blend. (I have had bad khinkali where it's all fat and no meat. This was NOT it). As I was driving I only had one glass of wine but it looks like they have an excellent selection of Georgian wines. I will definitely take a cab next time so I can try more. The Saparavi Merlot was an excellent companion to the meal. I see some people in other reviews complained about prices. Yes in Georgia itself you can a similar dinner for much less money. Guess what? You are not in Georgia, you are in Washington, DC. I found the price reasonable for the quantity and quality of the food and wine I had. The decor was interesting. It was very cozy, modern yet still distinctly Georgian. The wait staff was attentive but did not hover annoylingly. They were there when I needed them but not when I wanted to enjoy my dinner with my friend. I will definitely be back because I need to work my way through all the khatchipuri on offer as well as a the chanaki and other delights. I have many happy memories that are associated with Georgian food and hospitality and Supra just added to that group. read more

I was at Supra for dinner on a Monday night. The service was great from start to finish. We arrived quite early (5:45pm) and it was empty but by 6:30pm it had completely filled up. I was very excited about DC's first Georgian restaurant having lived there for two years. And overall I wasn't disappointed! The decor is lovely - modern, but with very tasteful Georgian-inspired art. Definitely reinforced the artistic side of Georgian culture. The wine selection was diverse and deliciously Georgian (although I always feel weird about drinking bottles Georgian wine instead of out of a coke bottle or other homemade carafe...) And the food overall was excellent. The pkhali was spot on (beet is always the most delicious), the eggplant nigovzit was amazing, and the imeruli khachapuri was deliciously salty and cheesy as it should be. The pork mtsvadi was tasty, but lacked the slow wood fire cooked flavor I recall. The only real disappointment was the khingali - the pork and beef ones we got were over-cooked. The dough had turned gummy and there was none of the delicious slurpy juices inside. I'm hoping that was a one time kitchen issue because even these had potential. I brought my mom and brother here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Our server was very nice and accommodating, and I love the restaurant's decor. We ordered the roasted vegetables (delicious), mussels (also delicious, though it could have used a bit more salt), the ajaruli (arguably the best dish we had), the soup dumplings (I personally didn't like them as much as Taiwanese / Chinese ones - the skin was too thick and not as flavorful as I hoped), the whole grilled fish (also a favorite), and the lamb kabobs (a bit chewy, but the sauces with it were amazing). Our server also recommended the grape soda, which was also delicious and not as sweet as American sodas, which I enjoyed more. Nice experience at Supra! Authentic Georgian food in a beautiful setting. The khinkali - the Georgian equivalent of Shanghai soup dumplings - were really tasty. The only issue was that they kicked us out of the restaurant not too late on a Saturday night when our group of 12 was still enjoying desserts and after-dinner drinks.
