So this review requires a little bit of background. My husband, sister in law, and 2 Korean friends of ours and myself decided to dine here. Our Korean friends had been here before and had enjoyed it. This time, they were mostly disappointed. However my husband and I and our untrained taste were delighted and loved our dishes. Hence 4 stars. We had green tea, no barley tea this time. Had a fried pork appetizer and steamed Dumplings. Delicious!! I got the hot stone bibimbap with chicken and my husband got a hot stone dish of bulgogi. We really liked our dishes and would be back again! Our Korean friends have had much better and were less than impressed. So, if you are a Korean food expert you may be left with wanting more. Sura has been a great addition to downtown. At lunch and dinner time this place is crowded. It has a huge following from the RISD population. Sura has great Lunch specials that incluse bento boxes, Bibimbap, and sushi combos. The wait staff tries their hardest to keep up with the lunch rush but always seems to get overwhelmed. The food however is great. I enjoy the Bibimbap, it's a "Oven Hot" stone bowl of white rice topped with sautéed and seasoned vegetables, fried egg and sliced meat.The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating and the dish is always accompanied by a chili pepper sauce. The rice gets toasty while in contact with the hot stone bowl and add another level of flavor and texture to the dish. Give it a try the next time you visit Sura! The Bento box lunches are another great offering. They are the japanese "Combo Meal", a little taste of sushi, salad, miso soup, appetizer and entree served in a traditional dish that has separate compartments for each item. Don't forget the Sushi! Fresh, Fast, and Tasty. I eat here often and the master sushi chef tends to send free sushi treats my way as soon as I sit down and order. Making sushi should not involve the use of both a microwave and toaster oven, let alone canned salmon. We were in the mood for some ramen and sushi and found this great restaurant. There is a large bar area and lots of seating, some booths, tables, and a combo of both. The menu is enormous so if you are indecisive be prepared. Lots of sake choices but we went with the basic large sake and asked for 2 cups, that was perfect. Offered hot or cold and they also have lots of bottled sake options. Food-OMG where to begin, they have sushi, hot plates, ramen, and lots more but we needed to focus on only a few things or we would have never eaten. We got the spicy scallop and eel sushi, which was good. We both opted for the spicy ramen, generous portion and amazing flavor. This place is so tasty and fresh! I've been looking for Korean bbq since trying it in LA and this place comes close. The ingredients are fresh and the prices are right! We had two dishes with tofu that were awesome. The staff was super friendly and attentive, we sat right down which was great for a Saturday night. I got the bimbimbap (sp?) which was tons of veggies, tofu, and rice with some sauce they give you on the side that I loved! My date got some udon noodles with veggies that were also really good. The portions are huge and it's tons of veggies so you don't feel too bad eating most all of it lol. Saki and drink selection is really good, Korean and Japanese beers. I had the vegetable dumplings which are the best in their so light and not over stuff so they're not filling you up totally that's the one that looks like a green pea pod. Not once, but twice. I've always tipped well as a single diner, especially when I've been treated well. The start here wasn't so strong. I didn't like the miso soup, as I've had much better versions elsewhere. This particular version had seaweed, scallions, small pieces of tofu, and all this was made in a yellow soybean sauce. I didn't like it at all. It simply wasn't that delicate, delicious miso that I've always enjoyed with shiitake mushrooms. Other side dishes that were served to us included kimchi, white radishes in some type of vinegar, and broccoli also in some form of light sauce. Not a fan of any of it besides the broccoli. I shared stir-fried seafood undon noodles along with dragon roll and shrimp tempora among two other people. The seafood undon was new to me, something I've never tried, but it was delicious. Served in a decently sized dish, it was placed in front of us bubbling hot. A mix of octopus and shellfish were in the mix, along with mushrooms, a bunch of onions, and some slivers of carrots and green peppers. This couldn't compare to the sushi we ordered. The shrimp tempora was by far my favorite, but the dragon roll was also filled with flavor. There were 6 big pieces of each sushi. Dessert: 2 orders of creme brûlée with berries. Generously sized individual cups were perfect for one person. The problem here was that the brûlée was frozen. Not rock-solid, but this was surely taken out of the freezer 45 minutes prior to ordering it. As for the service: So fast. In total, we only waited 10 minutes for all our food to be served. And that's being said without any exaggeration. We came here 10 PM on a Saturday night with half the restaurant full. Seating wasn't an issue, as we found a table for three in the corner overseeing Westminster St. Awesome view. We were promptly greeted by our waitress after settling down. The only complaint I have is that I felt rushed at the end of the night. This place closes at 11 PM on Saturday's, yet the waitress delivered our check and swiftly went to the register to cash out at 10:30. read more

I call to place a order for pick up I wanted to order one of the sushi combos they had. 2 of the combos they had were the same price so I asked if I could switch them up since they are the same price. She said she does not do that I understood. So I wanted to buy just 2 rolls since in one roll in the combo I didn't like. Then I noticed the other combo was exactly what I wanted. I confused myself but when I called was still very understanding she would not accommodate this request for me. Although parking is hard to find around Westminster st I finally made it here to Sura. Looks like a pretty chilled place with a small sushi bar as soon as you walk in along with a few tables. We did not order any sushi but we got to sample a few Korean fares like Bossam ( for 2 ppl) it's a braised pork belly lettuce wrap. We got some veggie accompaniments that usually go into the wrap but were disappointed they only served it with thick slices of cucumber, carrots, and pickled jar vegetable of some sort. I've had other Bossams and this was just not that great. Not enough veggies and sauce was salty and bland. They had a variety of typical Korean soups and we opted for the fish spicy soup and flavor was great but fish was so over cooked it was falling apart. First, there's truly nothing more assuring than being greeted by a hospitable, busy staff of Korean servers. I sit down. The Tang Soo Yook: Warm bites of soft pork, coated with an immaculately balanced sugary and vinegary sauce, hugged by a crispy, crackly fried exterior. A much needed colorful medley of staple vegetables cuts through the heaviness of these decadent saucey morsels. Eat right when it arrives to the table for full experience. Beef Hot Stone Bokkeum Bap: It's piping hot, flavorful, and generously scattered throughout with tender ribbons of beef - exactly what you need after a long, stressful winter's day. Don't forget the best part: the burnt rice after you're finished with the bowl. A little elbow grease is a small sacrifice for the earthy crunch of scrapings that line the bottom of the hot stone pot ("NooRoongJee" in Korean), infused with the savory flavors of the fried rice that once lay above it. I can't fathom why Sura only has a Yelp rating of 3.5 - either these reviewers are misinformed critics of Korean cuisine or exclusively dislike the Japanese food, which I've never tried (and don't plan on it). There's very loose competition for Korean restaurants in Rhode Island, but Sura tops it, undoubtedly. Go here for the KOREAN food. read more

The lunchtime special of this modern Korean restaurant is dope!!! You get a combo of two delicious entrees for the price of 15-ish dollars. My go-to entree is the seafood tofu Jjigae, which is a spicy traditional Korean stew of tofu, eggs and fresh baby octopus, baby scallops, clams. Ordered take out ramen due to the fact that I had the crippling flu of 2020 and needed something to revive my dehydrated and lack of nutrient soul. The Katsu Ramen was a very large portion, and the broth was busting off the flavor meter. The protein portion I ordered was chicken, and it came fried, which I was a mediocre fan of. If you're looking for a good Korean/Japanese place, Sura has a variety of dishes that covers a lot of tastes. The interior is very nice with a great sushi bar and a few bar tables near the front. I don't think that either the Japanese food (that we had) or the Korean is awesome but the quality is good and they try hard on the presentation. So if you're looking for a solid Japanese only place, Sura may not be the best in town, however as a casual place with lots of variety Sura shines. It seems to be good for large groups of people where variety is usually good. However reservations are a must as the place seemed to fill out quickly between 6:00pm and 7:00pm. The maki rolls are good and the sake sushi quite good. The Salmon Don was fresh and served in a good sized portion. Sura is a step above food court Korean and Japanese and a place at the sushi bar would provide a comfortable setting for some sushi, bulgogi and good conversation. However, one tip to the management; take the "specials" posters off the front windows. They block the view to the street and the light. And it makes the place look cheap or "food court" like. This is a nice place to have a quick sit down lunch. My coworkers and I have stopped by on various occasions and the food is always fresh, quick and delicious. They do tend to have lunch rush around noon so we either plan to arrive around 11:45a or after the rush around 1:15p. read more

We ended up at Sura because Ichiban and Mama Kim's was closed, and all I wanted was Soft Tofu Chigae and Pork Bulgogi. The restaurant is wicked pretty, and the servers very nice. Soft Tofu soup is very good - I loved it. Pork Bulgogi was very expensive and tasted disappointing. I believe Ichiban in Cranston has the best Pork Bulgogi in the area - it is 1.5 the size of what is served at Sura at half the price - $19.99 a plate at Sura, and if it was delicious I would not complain but the meat was overcooked and sauce wasn't very good. I would come back though - I will just stay away from the high price tag items that come along with the Westminster location. read more

Me and my boyfriend came to Providence, RI for a little getaway. We came to Sura late on a Saturday night the waitress was very nice and seated us. Decor of restaurant is very pretty and ambiance is warm and inviting. My boyfriend ordered the pork cutlet and got a green vegetable curry and rice with it. I ordered the Budae Jjigae stew with ramen and cheese added because I wanted it to have everything and also ordered the tteokbokki as well Both my boyfriend and me absolutely loved the food it came out hot and fresh and flavors were so yummy that it was addicting we were full but still trying to finish the food because it was so good. Customer service was also wonderful the lady that waited on us was always smiling and recommended dishes to us as well as gave us nice compliments... a smile goes a long way!!! I have to say Sura seems like the best Korean/Asian restaurant in Providence, RI if you are in Providence it is a must go-to. You will leave happy and satisfied. This afternoon I walked over to Sura with another local artist during our lunch break as we were showing/selling artwork at the Dean's Hotel Marketplace. When I walked in I asked to see a menu and one of the employees passed me one. I walked over to a side table at the front of the store by the entrance (that was primarily empty, only one table with a family was dining in at the time on the other side of the restaurant) to look at the menu on an empty table. As I looked over the menu, I snapped some photos of it to share with my team of artists who wanted takeout that were at the show. A few minutes later as we quietly looked at the menu, an older woman, very obviously stating her authoritative status, walked up to me and closed the menu without saying a word and snatched it out of my hands. She asked us "what are you doing?!" And I replied "I'm just looking at the menu". She said "what do you want" and I said "I'm not sure yet I was still looking before you snatched it out of my hands" and she replied "you can look online for the menu". I asked her why we couldn't just see the one that the employee handed us and she said because I was taking pictures of it. We walked away feeling so disappointed that this happened and could continue to happen in our city. If it were a rule to not take pictures of the menu, I don't understand why she felt so comfortable snatching it out of my hands - she should have professionally asked me to not take pictures of it and let us continue looking at the menu. This woman is so disrespectful and clearly picks and chooses who to serve with grace.. Sura is very unprofessional. Sura has a wonderful hospitality that is especially welcoming on a wintry day, with mugs of hot barley tea thrust into your hands as soon as you sit down. It also has a charming interior that's warm and relaxing, and the wait-service is attentive and personable. The food, while generally decent, is on the whole just not quite at the level I'd like it to be for a good Korean restaurant. The fried mondu was unfortunately deep-fried instead of pan-fried which makes them come across too much like fried wontons -- and the minced beef filling didn't have much flavor or character. The kimchee pajeon was also a little off in that we could taste that it was fried in old oil. We shared main entrees of the galbi jjim, pork bibimbap, and seafood jigae. Of these, the jigae was the best, arriving at the table bubbling hot, with a clean, spicy broth and loaded with soft tofu and seafood pieces. The galbi and bibimbap were a little disappointing: the gabli jjim seasoning was too sweet, though the short rib beef was tender and the bean thread noodles caramelized nicely on the hot cast iron serving plate; and the bibimbap was rather bland - even when mixed with the requisite kochujang sauce. Overall, it wasn't a bad Korean meal, but I think a few tweaks to the menu could make it a stellar one. read more
