I've been craving some real soul food that I can't find in my state, so I took a quick trip next door to Providence, Rhode Island to check out Gee Gee's Southern Cuisine. I pulled up right when they opened to get that fresh, hot food. Soon as I walked in, the vibe was on point--good music, welcoming decor, and just that feeling that you know the food's gonna be fire. I grabbed a seat and looked over the menu. Couldn't decide between the chicken or shrimp... so I went with both. No regrets. My plate came with mac and cheese that was creamy and flavorful, and the collard greens? Perfectly seasoned, just how I like them. The cornbread was soft and buttery, and the sweet tea hit just right. Solid 10/10 on the food--nothing but goodness. Only downside? The customer service. We had an end of summer pot luck at work and wanted to supplement what everyone was bringing in with some really great food, so we contacted Gee Gees to ask about catering. The person we spoke with was awesome, very helpful and friendly, and made the ordering and delivery process easy. We ordered trays of fried chicken, greens, macaroni and cheese, and yams. The food was an absolute hit with my co-workers and with others bringing in sides and desserts, we had one awesome meal. We would absolutely recommend using Gee Gees for catering and I can't wait to take my family to try more of what they have to offer! read more

Do not spend your money here. $60 for this food. It was not worth $10. The chicken was dry and unseasoned with literal feathers still on the chicken. The catfish was so dry I could stand it up and it didn't fall over. The yams tasted like cinnamon. That's it. Nothing else, just cinnamon. As if I was partaking in the cinnamon challenge. The cornbread was soooo grainy and had the weirdest sour aftertaste, they also left a weird filmy texture on our tongue. The greens were awful. It was like eating leafy vinegar. The mac and cheese was honestly one of the worst mac and cheeses I have ever had. It was not creamy or cheesy at all. It was like a sour sponge of sour gross cheese and oil. The only redeeming thing about all of that food was the potato salad. It was okay, I liked the consistency and the flavor wasn't bad. Food is overpriced, extremely unseasoned, chicken is clearly not cleaned properly (which leads me to believe that kitchen is clearly not sanitary and up to safety standards), and everything is either dry, sour, weird filmy texture, or all of the above. Go to Popeyes before even thinking of coming here. I ordered based off of the pictures posted. They should be shut down for false advertisement. The food looked SO GOOD in the pictures. It's so wrong of a company to post a couple pictures of good looking food and then to serve this garbage to paying customers. I will never even think about spending money here again. I would strongly advise everyone who thinks about coming here to literally go anywhere else. This food is an insult to soul food everywhere. read more

I remember going to Gee gees back when they first opened in Olneyville and they were pretty amazing. They closed their brick and mortar for a while which was a bummer but now they're back and better than ever y'all! They are not updated here on Yelp but that's what I'm here for. They are now on 539 Smith St., Providence RI 02908 (Right in the ALDIs plaza. The place is NICE y'all (see below for pictures), I put in an order to go and will update y'all on if it's as great as I remember but I doubt it won't be. You'd be a fool not to stop by. I got the chicken dinner with Mac and cheese and collard green which they make with smoked turkey and Genesis who was cashing me out gave me a sample of the yams because I was indecisive (picture included). Food update - hold on while I finish licking my fingers...yess, they still smack down on the throw down. The chicken was crispy and juicy, Mac & cheese was cheezing, collards will put you in a chokehold, and yams were nice and cinnamon-ny. As a true Georgia peach, I have to say... they tried. I ordered the small chicken dinner with mac and cheese and added a side of yams. The menu listed the dinner at $10, but I was charged an extra $3 for the mac and $6 for the yams. Unfortunately, the yams were way overcooked--basically purée--and the mac and cheese didn't bring any flavor or comfort. For $20, I got one fried drumstick, disappointing sides, and a generous chunk of cornbread. To top it off, I waited over 20 minutes as if they were making it fresh, but the taste said otherwise. Small local business specializing in fried chicken. I ordered chicken/waffle kids meal, chicken sandwich meal, 2 Mac and cheese, 1 order of buffalo chicken soul rolls and 2 Caesar salads = $53. I had a gift certificate for $50. It was a pretty long wait (about an hour). I had tried to call and order but got voicemail. When I got my food I was missing the 2 salads. The employee to me I never ordered them (I'm certain I did because I repeated order 2x). So I ordered salad....again... and waiting again. I paid with card and was then refunded in cash and told they did not have any salad. The Mac and cheese was tiny and very dry/bland. I would not recommend (especially for $8). The soul rolls were delicious but very greasy. My son said the chicken sandwich was delicious. My other one said the chicken and waffles were really good. I was disappointed that there was no salad and wish they had mentioned when I ordered as I would have just ordered a salad elsewhere while I waited. Got the fried chicken, which was delicious and moist, the potato salad - a little sweet and yummy, and amazing cornbread! We also ordered the mushroom burger for my vegetarian friend - this was a good attempt, but the mushroom was undercooked and texture was all wrong (the sauce and French fries were good though) 25 minute wait for the food, $24 total, but we ordered and went shopping and picked up our order to go, so timing was good! Smothered Pork Chop, Steak Rice, Collard Greens and Cornbread. When I say home cooked soul food, I mean like grandma used to make. Chops (notice I said chops as in 2) were well prepared, just enough breading to hold the gravy, tender to the chew, steak rice was flavorful with huge chunks of steak, onion and pepper. Food was just okay. My critique is that the fried chops were soggy. You need to find a way to keep the moisture out of the fried foods container because the crispness is gone. Wrap them separate in foil and do not put them in a foam container. I had to refry them to get the right crispness back. A lil disappointed by that and the chewiness of the pork chops. Spend good money and should get what you order. Fried not fried and soggy. And the ribs tasted old and were not fall off the bone. I just cannot. My second time here and disappointed again. I really wanted to love it. Im all about supporting local businesses. Decided to have something different for dinner and been wanting to try this place. I think my only disappointment was the 1 wing dinner seems more like a kids dinner with just 1 wing serving. The food although very flavorful it was a bit saltier than what I am used to. I came to Gee Gee's based on the recommendation of some colleagues. The food was absolutely delicious which is why I am giving it a 4 star rating. I had the fried pork chop which was amazing, as well as the mac and cheese, and potato salad. All of it was amazing. What was not amazing and the reason why I cannot give it a five star rating was the attitude of the person working the cash register. The interior is very nice with some tables and a nice bar area to sit at. My friend and I walked in and sat at the bar. The cashier was on the phone, after she ended her call she still never acknowledged us. It wasn't until we got up and stood in front of the register did she acknowledge us and when she did it was with a "what would you like?" No hi, no welcome, nothing. We placed our orders we never asked if we were eating in or taking out, and we went back to where we were to sit.We were the only two people in there at the time. All of a sudden the music in the dining room started it was so loud I couldn't even hear the person next to me talking, the music choice I would have considered questionable for a family environment. Shortly after a family came into the restaurant. My order was ready first followed by the family that came in. My order was placed in a styrofoam to go container and placed in a bag and handed to me, the family that was sitting in were served on real china. My friends order came the same way in the styrofoam container. It was very clear we were an inconvenience to the cashier and she wanted us gone. I opened my plastic bag and food container and proceeded to eat at the bar where we were sitting. When I removed the container something was leaking out knowing I didn't order anything with liquid I opened the container and noticed I did not get my Mac and cheese and got yams. I looked at my receipt and the cashier pushed yams in stead of Mac and Cheese. Ironically when this happened the who I assume was the owner came in and talked to the cashier about how the day was going. The whole atmosphere changed completely. She overheard my conversation, the cook was out there as well. Both were very nice and apologetic the owner told me to keep the yams, and they will bring the mac and cheese to me, the cook told me it would be a little bit for it because they make it fresh and it was worth the wait. The Mac and cheese was actually served to me in a dish on a real plate. The owner came back to check in on us and was very hospitable. As we were leaving she thanked us for supporting them. I would absolutely go back and will recommend to others however the cashier needs to learn that the customers are not the enemy. read more

The first time I had Gee Gee's was takeout, my brother in law brought some home and it was the special for the day I believe. Hands down was the best fish I've ever had!! Sooo full of flavor, and had the perfect texture. My boyfriend and I decided to grab some today and just picked anything from the menu. Definitely wasn't disappointed! It's a cute little hole in the wall, not much space to sit but if you catch it before rush hour then you'll have a spot to sit down. I ordered the wing dinner large with 2 sides, mac & yams omg! The Mac is bomb creamy and with cheese stretch but not watery, the yams were sweet and buttery! The chicken was crispy well seasoned and cooked all the way through! The cornbread was sweet and moist. My partner ordered the catfish small with one side, he had the jag rice. He's a very picky eater and upon finishing his meal he was like we have to go back asap. He usually doesn't like eating out and prefers my cooking, I'm glad I have a place I can now suggest we eat at on nights I don't feel like cooking! Tasty! Amazing! Definitely coming back! Ordered two catfish dinners w three whole wings on the side. Absolutely delicious!!!! Cooked perfectly! Still moist and tender but crispy. Sides were mac 'n cheese, collard greens, and yams. Hittin' all the way!! Tasted like it was straight out the South (no pun intended). The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the cornbread. I was all set to give Gee Gees 5 stars because the pork chop plate was amazing. Just perfect really. The baked Mac n cheese and candied yams were amazing sides. I dropped a star because they were closed on a night they should have been open. And they didn't answer the phone the next time I wanted to check if they were open. Reliability is key if you want return customers. I hope they straighten it out because the food is amazing. In town for a baseball tournament this past weekend and my son wanted fried chicken. Found this gem of a place...the fried chicken and fried catfish were amazing. First time trying Gee Gee's. I ordered for pick up a Chicken Wing Dinner. The wings were very tasty and juicy. The Collard Greens were well seasoned and cooked to perfection... (not overcooked or soggy) The mac and cheese was delicious and definitely baked and not soaked in grease. The missing star is due to the cornbread which tasted good but was a little on the dry side. The location is rather small and muggy.. but to be fair i did go on a rainy evening... happy to see they have an updated POS system which takes credit cards ... i def be back. read more

Where can I start? I found Gee Gee's after searching for a spot that has baked mac & cheese because I was CRAVING it. I decided to drive the short (about 8min) distance from my house. Although finding the place was a little difficult due to how hidden away it was and the lack of a huge advertisement, I was determined to fix my cravings lol. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a male. I quickly learned that him and his wife owns the place ( his wife cooks). He was nice, made me feel welcome as he took my order. He was able to answer any questions I had. I ordered the chicken dinner which comes with two sides and cornbread. Of course because of my craving I made both sides mac & cheese It was about 15-20 min wait, it was worth it because everything came out fresh! The interior is cool; black seated tables and chairs and the wall a wooden feature. They play great music too! From old school to new hip hop which i love and was jamming too haha! I recommend Gee Gee's Update!!!!! I tried the Chops Dinner which includes two porkchops with two sides of your choosing and cornbread! I DIDNT THINK ANY OTHER MEAL FROM GEE GEE WOULD BE BETTER THAN THE CHICKEN DINNER BUT I WAS WRONG! Chop Dinner is so good, was not disappointed at all.
