My experience with Sure Roofing was by far the best I've ever had with any home service company. Chris, the estimator, was incredibly knowledgeable and thorough. He clearly explained the entire scope of work, and made sure I understood every detail of the project. I had an estimate in my inbox just one day after my initial phone call with them, which was the fastest turn around time of any of the roofers I contacted. I got three quotes and theirs fell right in the middle, so the price seemed fair. Now that I know the quality of their work and the level of customer service, I think the price was amazing. Once the project started, Nancy was my main point of contact and she was truly wonderful. She was very kind, very responsive, and provided constant updates. I especially appreciated the progress photos she sent, which showed me exactly what was happening on my roof throughout the day. Updated 2023 As you can see in the original review, we got our roof done by Sure Roofing in 2015. It's a flat roof. We were told they would level it so water would not pool. Water has been pooling since the first rain after the new roof. They came out and tried to raise it with a patch and we thought that solved the issue but it did not. A few years ago we discovered the roof was bubbling up all over with large air bubbles! The owner came out last year, looked at the roof for 30 seconds, told us it was fine and insisted nothing was wrong with the roof and refused to do anything. It also looks terrible. We now have to get a new roof from a different roofing company. We've been getting quotes and the competitors can't believe how Sure Roofing left our roof. I hired Sure Roofing to replace my leaking roof that was way beyond its service life, based on a neighbor being generally satisfied with their work (and my sharing a gutter with them). I now regret not going with my usual approach of reading many reviews and getting multiple estimates before selecting a contractor, and will not hire Sure again. The Sure Roofing field crew was experienced, skilled, and very fast. However, I arrived home on their last field day to find them and all their equipment gone, but my new chimney vent installed so far off vertical/plumb I couldn't believe any roofing company would consider it complete. I estimate it was 10-15 degrees off, and it stuck out like a sore thumb among all the other roof vents on my block when observing it from the street. This got me looking closer at the rest of the finished roof work and noting a few other potential issues to ask about. After more explanation than should have been required, the Sure owner, customer rep., and sheet metal tech came out to my house. "You shouldn't criticize our work" was the first thing the owner said, and he made it clear he thought the visit was unnecessary, and that's the moment Sure completely lost me as a potentially good future reference for them. After (luckily) being able to calm myself down before re-explaining why a grossly non-vertical vent was unacceptable and asking how they were going to make it right, I indicated the couple other items I had questions about. The customer service rep. and sheet metal tech. were generally friendly and understanding, and they did finally address the off-plumb vent, but the owner was dismissive of each of my questions and other quality issues I asked about, and left with his team as soon as possible without offering any other remedies. Since then, I've emailed and corresponded with their senior salesperson and customer service rep., and resigned myself to only trying to get two of the most important of the several other issues addressed, but they've now become non-responsive after multiple attempts by me over the last few months, presumably at the direction of the owner, and I've now simply given up even trying to get them to follow up on those two issues as they said they would. At this point I can only conclude that Sure has calculated the cost they would incur to respond to me and/or finish their work to my satisfaction is greater than the value of my potential reference as a happy customer, despite what the customer service rep. told me. Due to this experience with Sure, I re-learned valuable lessons about shopping around more thoroughly, not paying contractors until work is 100% complete according to my contract with them and industry standards of care, and not trusting or relying on verbal information or agreements. I am thankful that Sure's work addressed my biggest issues - needing to quickly replace a very old roof with a totally shot and leaky Dutch gutter - and most of my new roof looks fine. However, I'm now stuck with one Dutch gutter (the other one) that still has standing water after rain and one roof vent that's not as secure as the other, along with a couple other quality issues. I now have fingers crossed that a new leak won't pop up next time it rains or that I'll have to otherwise deal with a warranty or other issue with Sure again. If you're looking for an emergency roofing job and don't pay too much attention to detail, Sure might be great for you. It was amazing how quickly their crew was able to demolish my existing ancient roof and construct a new one, and most of it seems fine. But I recommend that if you're looking for a roofing company that is thorough about quality and is customer service-oriented, you keep shopping around. I have been in various customer-facing roles for over 20 years and cannot imagine being as dismissive and non-responsive to any of my customers as Sure has been to me. We hired Sure Roofing to fix a faulty roof installed by another roofer. The old roof was a disaster. The entire Sure team was helpful, from Chris Testa, who quoted the job, to the owners. They identified the leaks left from the faulty roof and fixed the problem and laid a waterproofing layer that should last. Lucky for us they came in before the torrential winter storms and the roof held up. I wish we had hired them in the first place. Serious communication problem within their own organization that disappoints. Their estimator came to give me with the price of a skylight 4×2 in area for $2000. then after I paid $1000 deposit , it ended up with the foreman shows up and tell me he can only do 4x1 skylight . at that time I had no choice but to continue. the quality of work is good but it beats my purpose of spending the money. I grab my quotation and ask them to refund portion of the money because a good portion of the work is not done. they told me they did me a favor since they are so busy they no longer do skylights and that they normally charge $250 an hour so I got a very good deal even though I know they spent 4 hours total not including the time to fabricate the skylight. what gets worse if that they told me I made the request to make the skylight smaller. WTF ?! at the end they gave me $100 I almost felt like crying because they were so nice. guess what, that $100 got me to spend time to write this review. they said they broke even . so look at the picture and you be the judge if they made money or not. stay away from Sure Roofing ! read more

Sure Roofing replaced my 1,700sf flat roof in the Sunset. I was pleased with the office and field work. Most of the tradesmen were long term employees of Sure Roofing. The owner Richard personally supervised the work. The estimator Chris was responsive and knowledgeable. Warranties, permits, insurance certificates, etc. were furnished promptly and well organized. The price was very competitive with other long established roofers. read more

Sure Roofing used questionable sales tactics to try to upsell me a higher-cost option even though the lower-cost option it previously used on my roof had performed well. Specifically, it (a) provided misleading (if not actually false) information about the lower-cost option, (b) despite offering that option, it refused to provide me an estimate for it, and (c) it ultimately rescinded its offer of that option. My roof requires periodic recoating. In 2015, Sure Roofing performed the first recoating. As I was satisfied with its work, it was 1 of 3 roofers I contacted for bids for the the next recoating. For the 2015 work, Sure Roofing used two Davlin acrylic products: Davlin 900 Acrylastic Asphart and Davlin 510 Acrylastic. Per Sure Roofing's and another roofer's 2023 inspections, they had performed well. Rather than proposing to use these same products, Sure Roofing attempted to upsell me a more expensive silicon product. It alleged the current acrylic products aren't as robust as before: "Since the early 2000's the quality of the acrylic roof coatings has declined (due to continued expansion of California Prop 65 regulations), so the newer ones of that type aren't as robust. On top of that, prices have jumped dramatically in the last few years (thank you, C-19!). If you're not observing any leaking issues, then it may be worth considering a permanent solution to your roof maintenance. We use a lot of silicone elastomeric roof coatings now, and while much more expensive than the acrylics, they offer dramatically different performance and warranty coverage. With a workmanship warranty of 5 years, a manufacturer's warranty of 20 years, and a life expectancy of 30+, they are a terrific one-time solution of a flat roof assembly like yours. The price for the preparation and application of this material is $6650, but you literally would eliminate any scheduled maintenance for the roof for decades to come. Might that be of interest? If so, I can email the paperwork and we'll get you on our schedule. Call, text, or email and let me know if this solution might work for you, or if something else sounds more appealing." In reply, I asked if the two products used in 2015 are still available: "I believe the products Sure Roofing applied on my roof in 2015 were the Davlin 900 Acrylastic Asphart and Davlin 510 Acrylastic. Are these no longer available and/or have they been reformulated since then?" Sure Roofing replied: "We can still get the Davlin coatings, but the newest formulations just don't seem to stand up like the previous generations, so we find ourselves using them less and less on flat roofs. If you want, we can still do that same combination for you, and it will definitely be less than the silicone." It then again attempted to upsell me the more expensive option: "This is the manufacturer's information for this product:   https://www.certainteed.com/resources/SMARTCOAT_450_High_Solids_Silicone_Coating_White_TDS.pdf This is an industrial-class product that will literally last decades on that roof, has proven itself in various forms for nearly half a century, and would be my first choice if I were the owner and wanted to cross roofing off my maintenance list for the indefinite future.  We use silicone roof coatings practically every week in and around San Francisco and they have proven time and again to be worthy of our trust." As it remained unanswered, I again asked: "Have the 2 Davlin products that were used in the 2015 work on my roof been reformulated since then? Or would the formulations be the same as used in the 2015 work?" Although by then it was doubtful I'd use Sure Roofing, I also requested an estimate for that option. After two weeks with no reply, I followed-up with Sure Roofing: "Could you please provide me the info requested in my May 25 email, or, alternatively, please let me know if Sure Roofing no longer is interested in this work." I received the following reply: "Sure Roofing doesn't have the confidence in the currently available systems to offer them any longer. However, I'm sure you can find someone who does. Regardless, thanks again for the opportunity!" Because Sure Roofing's replies didn't pass my smell test, I contacted Davlin. Davlin confirmed my suspicions: "The 510 has not been reformulated since 2015. It is WELL below the VOC limit for roof coatings then and now." It also said it was unnecessary to reapply the Davlin 900. When a company provides misleading (if not false) information about a lower-cost option; evades answering key questions about that option; refuses to provide a cost estimate for that option; and ultimately rescinds its offer of that option for a reason contradicted, in writing, by that option's product manufacturer, it is hard for me not to see red flags. They were thorough in explaining their product and detailed with their work. The office was responsive with my questions. I did my homework-got 6 estimates-between Tar & Gravel and Torch Down roofs. We had SURE replace our gutters with copper ones last year and replace a top to our flower box overhang with a stainless steel top. They did a great job with that, so we had him submit a roof estimate next. He was the best bang for the buck and would do all the extras for us-new Facia board, copper downspout, venting in stainless or copper where needed. We gave a deposit a week before, and he wanted to schedule right away, but we had some conflicts, as well as a death in the family, which took precedence. I texted him with two dates and both were great for him. Asked him to pull the permit and schedule the inspector as well. He complied, let me know the crew would be out at 8am and they were right on time! Brought their own "Port-a-Potty", which I liked and found courteous and professional! Not fond of workmen traipsing around my home using the facilities unless absolutely necessary! We work from home, so it can disturb us, but we never refuse if it has to be that way. The crew wasted NO time tearing off the old tar and gravel roof. The lead man, immediately let us know the underpayment was "Perfect" and would not need replacement, albeit they had the material if it needed to be with them. You always always have an "unknown" until exposed. They worked until the roof was off completely and then took a lunch break-only about 30 minutes too! They used redwood for the Facia all around the front so it matched-it was needed -and did a great job lining it up, trimming, gluing and nailing. It is VERY secure! They finished the whole thing by the end of the day, and at the right stage, they inspector signed off on it all with his "approval" and we were given the original document at that time. So the City of Daly City said we are "kosher" now! At the end of the day the owner, Richard Choy, came by and we gave him 1/2 of the remaining amount of the job, only because the copper downspout needs to be installed and the front edge of the new Facia board needs the metal edging sealed over, but I have to have our painter prime it before they can finish it, then they get the balance of what is owed. So far, all has gone smoothly and I would hire or refer them again! Richard made some suggestions along the way since doing the work for us last year and he's been spot on so far! I anticipate this roof lasting for quite awhile with no issues. You must always remember when doing a Torch Down Roof, someone NEEDS to be on the roof at all times with a fire extinguisher as it CAN start a fire, so you really want experienced folks doing your work. Several of the companies we interviewed were most professional and pleasant, but they were WAY more expensive! It IS good to compare apples to apples, drive and see other places they've done their work and even talk with an owner to see if they've had any "problems" with the roof since installation. We did this and heard no bad references. So, in the long run, I would recommend SURE for your roof. I have learned to "micromanage" most vendors. "Assume Nothing"! CALL them the day before to make sure they are coming at the time planned, have the permit, scheduled the inspection. Much is lost in communication when one "assumes" anything these days! read more

Disappointed. We selected Sure Roofing, and decided that their high price was worth it, because we wanted everything to go smoothly and get done right. That didn't happen. The scheduling was a nightmare, in large part because the scaffolding people they subjected us to were maniacs (who ended up damaging our house). Once the job was done, there were about 8 nails poking though our inside wall from the roof outside. Obviously, their roofers made a mistake. We aksed them to fix it and, to our shock, they gave us a runaround, denying they had done anything wrong (I guess our house wasn't good enough for their nails) and refusing to stand by their work. Had an appointment so I took half a day off from work so I can meet with the estimator; however, received a call 30 minutes prior to the appointment and was told they can't make it out. Instead, was given a "phone estimate"?, also was told I would receive a written estimate via email; which never happened. Hard to believe these guys are Diamond Certified, and I'm totally disappointed with this type of non-services. I will be happy and take my money elsewhere, but please do not waste my time. Signed up for Yelp just to leave this review! Anyway, we asked the folks at Sure Roofing to come fix our 2-story deck that wasn't that old, but was looking a bit sketchy in places. They were recommended by a friend who happens to be an architect, so a qualified recommendation IMO. Anyway, not only did they address our original issue, they fixed and extended and improved it in ways that we hadn't even considered. *And* it was under our budget (don't tell them that :-) ) When we found out they also do siding and trim, we had them update the front of our previously-ugly 'wedding cake' style of house. For way less than we thought we would pay, we now have a modern and clean-looking designed house, all basically because of the new facing they put on it. I don't know how well they actually do the 'roofing' portion of their business, but what we've used them for has well exceded our expectations, and seem way more reasonably priced that other contractors we spoke to. Almost (if not more) important is that the Sure Roofing guys know all the ins-and-outs of permitting, scaffolding, and all the logistics of working in San Francisco. The few people we talked to outside of the City didn't even know how to get the materials into our back yard. Could not recommend higher. read more

Once these guys get the job started, there is no stopping them! While obtaining bids, these guys had the same product for substantially less money (nearly 40%). It took a while to schedule the work but once they got started they completed the job in less time than they said. Very detailed work, very efficient, and cleaned up extremely well. read more

I used Sure Roofing to put in a rather large skylight in my home. When the estimator came out (operations director, initials S.L.) he was profesional at first, but not very personal. After about 5 minutes of coming in, he was yapping on the phone the entire time, and didn't give me a good opportunity to ask detailed questions about the work. After about a week, I got a detailed 'packet' in the mail about the company and a job order with what was to be done (nice touch). Cost of the project was very reasonable. After signing the agreement, I never heard from Sure Roofing. I had to hunt them down on everything from paying my deposit for the work, scheduling a time for them to come out...basically stuff they should have been doing for a potential customer. When they finally did come, the foreman (again the Director, S.L.) left before the job was 100% complete. When I had an issue with the work, the worker told me to call S.L. He said he would take care of it in about a week. 1 week rolls by and nothing. I called and leave 2 subsequent messages...no reply. I never even received a receipt mailed to me! Overall, they did good work, but service stinks, and I would not recommend them based on their lack of customer service and overall professionalism. read more

I was interested in installing copper shingles on the front of our house. I first got in touch with Chris Testa of the Metal Roof Net. Chris was very helpful and got me started in the right direction. He referred me to Richard Choy of Sure Roofing for the job. Once the copper was obtained and the job started it took a little over 3 days. The work crew was fantastic. Very efficient and professional. Richard was very pleasant and very supportive. Over the years I have worked with several contractors and Sure Roofing is as good as it gets: - Pricing: they were not the cheapest bid, nor the most expensive, but the end result with the materials that they used was better than the highest bids that we received. All additions to the original contract were explained before hand and were reasonable. There were no surprises. - On time: The roofing team showed up on the date promised and finished the job (including additions that I added) sooner than expected. - Communication: From the time that we received the bid to the job completion, we received emails and phone calls to discuss status and any questions. The on site foreman, Si, notified us immediately if there was an issue or question about how to proceed. All throughout the project, Chris, the sales guy, called regularly to see if there was any issues. The one time an issue came up, it was resolved quickly and without problems. - Quality of workmanship: as stated before the material used and the quality of the workmanship was better than bids that we had for 30%-40% more. All flashing and gutters used copper fittings and the chimneys are now encased in stainless steel with stainless steel flues. Since this building is in San Francisco, my neighbors buildings are right next to mine. Sure made sure that everything from the dutch gutters to the sides of the neighbors buildings were matching. The shingles used were the thickest, strongest available. There was even an old weather vane on my roof that they were able to salvage and reattach so that that it's working once again. I'm fairly certain that this roof will out last me. - Relationship with neighbors: since we are all crammed very tight here in SF, during the project it was impossible not to have some debris fall onto my neighbors property. In addition parking being what it is in SF, usually this type of project would impact the neighborhood due to a need for debris boxes, construction trucks, etc. However, Sure hauled off all the debris every day and made sure that they cleaned both my property and my neighbors' property every day. Nothing was left at the end of the day and parking was not impacted. read more

They were prompt in returning my call and scheduling. They did the work, were patient with my payments ( I had to wait a bit for my bank), finished the roof in stated time. on budget AND sent me pictures since I live out of the city. It looks great...actually fantastic. Nancy in the office was polite, answered all my questions and was very professional. AND not one complaint from my renters. When we started noticing a leak this winter after Sure roofing redid our roof, they came right now to take a look, and itentified the source of the leak (it was definitely not the roof) and patched it for us for no additional cost! I am really satisfied. Sure roofing is not the cheapest but I am really satisfied with workmanship and follow up. There crew is really top notch and the foreman and owner come by a number of times per day to follow up. I had to pay for some additional repair work but this cost was well worth the dollars spent. During the rain on March 13th our roof began to leak. My wife sent Sure Roofing an e-mail that afternoon. It was very responsive. The company sent a crew that Saturday, March 19th and patched the roof, which did not leak when it rained the next day. The following Wednesday, March 23d, a Sure roofing crew arrived and,with first rate efficiency and excellent workmenship, replaced our roof over the next three days. The pitched area has tiles but there is a small flat section in front of the tiles, which they also put torch down bitumen. It is the front section that has been having problems. It turns out Sure Roofing did not torch down all of the bitumen but just slipped a section of the bitumen under the first row of tiles (Another roofer pointed out the problem to me). This has allowed moisture to become trapped between the bitumen and the roof causing mildew to appear in my living room ceiling. I contacted the company and they sent out one of their men, David. At first, David tried to disclaim responsibility for the problem but when I pointed out they did not seal the bitumen under the tiles, he took photos and said he would talk to his boss and they would call me. Three days pass and not a word from them so I call the office. The receptionist tells me David didn't say anything and she would confer with him and get back to me. Needless to say no phone call from them. The following week, I call again and she tells me she hasn't spoken to the owner but once she does, she will call me. Since then I've called two more times with the same excuses. After reading some of the yelp reviews, I now realize this company is not going to respond unless I take them to court. My contract states I have a 5 year labor warranty. It is unfortunate the company does not stand behind their work. For them to rectify this situation would cost them less than $2,000. I would tell anyone who is thinking of using them to BEWARE. If you have any problems after the work is done, you will have to call out another roofing company to deal with it. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, as well as the California License Bureau. And, I will be taking them to small claims court. I am not a customer of this company yet. On Monday, April 15, 2013 - there were strong winds and it appears two of the tiles on my terra cotta clay tile roof blew off and crashed the ground. My neighbor on that side of the property was worried and told me to have the roof checked out as it is personal liability if someone gets hurt in the future. I called Sure Roofing Systems describing the situation and my homeowners insurance company said I needed the roofing contractor to provide in writing what they found so I would not be held for negligence if the roof is still okay. Sure Roofing Systems came out on April 18, 2013 except I had not seen anyone other than the owner Mr. Richard O. Choy calling me on the telephone telling me everything is fine and to replace the missing tiles will cost me a $ amount but even without fixing the missing tiles, the roof is still secure. However, they would not put it in writing other than how much it costs to fix the missing tiles. As I will be rennovating the house with a vertical and horizontal addition in the near future, I would like to if possible, to do the roof at that time instead. The company appears to keep saying they cannot guarantee the work of others but that is not what I am asking, all they need to say is the roof's actual condition so that they can confirm what was said on the telephone in writing as even if I did fix the tiles, I would still be liable for negligence because I don't have anything in writing that the existing roof is still okay and this is from a Diamond Certified company too. read more

I recently hired Sure Roofing to replace my flat roof and the shingles for my center patio, as well as some waterproofing work on a dutch gutter and chimney. Because of all the horror stories out there about contractors in general, I took my time and interviewed about 5-6 roofers, including all those from the Diamond Certified website. In the end, I selected Sure Roofing because of their reasonable cost, their longevity (over 30 years in existence) and their patience with all my questions. The owner, foremen and crew were all very professional, friendly and efficient. The job was completed within the allotted timeframe. The workers were punctual in the morning and cleaned up after a day's work. The owner also threw in some additional services on the house (literally and figuratively), including dry rot removal, cleaning and waterproofing the main gutter and a new chimney cover. SURE Roofing has been Diamond Certified for 12 yrs which was a major consideration.We stopped by shop and interviewed owner Richard Choy.He shortly agreed to inspect our Pacifica home.
