I had a mixed experience with Surf Shack. It didn't go exactly as planned but they responded well, thus the rating. The lessons themselves were very good. The instructors were nice and laid back, and gave us a lot of freedom to explore the water. Equipment was obviously used but quite okay. Our complication with booking however... We booked an all day Surf / Kayak / Snorkel package, including a lunch. After the surf lesson we found out the Kayak portion was actually in a different town and they DONT provide transportation there. We didn't have a car so would have to taxi. Because of bad weather, our kayak/snorkel was moved to the next day, and they turned out not to have lunch for us either. I was initially unhappy, but after a phone call Surf Shack reimbursed a fair amount for the lunch and transportation. In the end I feel satisfied with their service. read more

Surf Shack in Mana Kai (not the 1993 S Kihei location) is where we booked a kayak/snorkel tour with Kelii's Kayak. Upon confirming the tour was even happening on Sunday because the guy in the store didn't even think they had them. Once we paid, we asked about details and he told us we would get a call or email same day with details of our 7:45am tour the next morning. We never got any calls or emails after repeated checks. He gave no other details except that the tour may or may not leave from Makena Landing depending on weather. Right around 5pm we called the store back and found that it was closed. We left a voicemail. The next morning at 7am (still no info) we found the direct number for Kelii's Kayak and called them. They told us we need to rush NOW 20mins down to Makena Landing if we want to make the tour because we were supposed to be there at 7am for orientation. At first, the girl on the phone wasn't even sure we had a reservation. We immediately rushed out the door as is, of course forgetting sunscreen and motion sickness pills and any kind of food. This resulted in an extremely sub-par experience and my husband getting motion sick & burnt, thus not enjoying much of the trip and ruining our last day in Maui. I have nothing bad to say about Kelii's and our tour guide Curtis was very pleasant and we thank them for waiting. As to the guy at surf shack, I hope you don't keep the job, you were rude, standoffish, and generally low on any interest in dealing with customers, you just didn't want to be there, so PLEASE LEAVE and stop ruining people's experience that may be once in a lifetime. read more

Rented kayaks from the guys at Surf Shack Maui and they were great. Very knowledgeable about the area, and they had a relaxed approach to sharing info without preaching. The gear was in good shape and they helped me load the boats on my rental van. I called around to get rental prices and Surf Shack's were the best. I didn't rent surfboards, but I saw them talking to lots of people about lessons and board rentals- really friendly. read more

We had a great time during our first surf lessons. The lady at the counter was awesome and super nice. The actual instructor was a bit of a dick at times but was cool other times. Just seemed like he didn't have much patience. Regardless, we had a great time and had a lot of fun. Plus the rates were super cheap compared to the competition. Only $59 for a two hour lesson. Oh and they let us keep the boards and practice by ourselves after the lesson was over which was awesome! read more

Jay is the dopest instructor. Dan was super helpful and informative behind the counter. We got a lesson with Jay and both my boyfriend and I stood up on the first try! The class sizes are small (no more than 6 ppl) and the price for 2 hours is very reasonable. The surf spot is across the street from the surf shack. You can use the boards free of charge after the lesson is over which is awesome. They take professional photos of you that you can purchase after so no need to worry about that! Everything about our surf lesson today exceeded our expectations. My husband and I had made reservations for later in the week but our plans changed and we decided to stop by to see if we could have our lesson today instead. The staff was incredibly accommodating and made it happen right away. Jay was our instructor and she was outstanding. There were 5 people in our lesson ranging from a high schooler to a man in his 60's, and all of us successfully stood up and rode multiple waves during the lesson. The experience was fun and definitely one we will recommend to friends and family visiting Maui! read more

We had a great surfing morning in Kihei with our instructor Lucas who was excellent. Group lesson with 6 participants for $59/each was a good deal (actually less because we bought a discount package that doesn't expire). 2 hours of instruction, everyone up on their boards, photographer in the water recording all the thrills and spills. Bonus is the boards are available the rest of the day for independent use if you're up for more surfing. Bottom line, friendly staff, good value, family fun in the sun. Recommend. read more

I booked a private lesson with my eight year old daughter and our instructor was James and his awesome surf dog, Church. Not only did he have us both catching waves on our own within the first hour but he made it so much fun. We got great pics through the surf shack photographer and James even followed up with us the next day when he located a great action picture of us that a different photographer took and he sent it to me. Just returned from Maui and wanted to say Thanks, Kyle and Matthew, for your encouragement, great lessons, and positive attitudes. My 12-year-old kids and I surfed 3 separate days(yes, even I got up for a couple of waves) and paddle-boarded with sea turtles, and it was easy to show up, listen, try hard, and have fun. no fuss rental for good price. you literally walk up, pay, and drag your kayak to the beach and are on your way. the entry point at this beach is rocky and was rough both times we went. just make sure to get some safety tips from the rental place before you venture out if you're not experienced (like us). read more

I'm a 54 year old woman, reasonably fit, have never surfed but always wanted to! I signed up for a personal surf lesson through Surf Shack, and had Luke for my instructor. He was super friendly and helpful, very clear, patient and enthusiastic. And I surfed!!! I "caught" a lot of waves! It was so much fun. And the had a photographer, Kylee, who took photos (which cost extra) which were actually really great and totally worth it!! Would definitely recommend him for instruction!! read more

I used to like this place but it seems to have changed a lot. They still have good prices but are just not nice to do business with. We go every year but the quality of the lessons has gone way downhill. Not a fun vacation experience. Our teacher wouldn't even help my son carry his board and he's a little kid. read more

The lesson was just ok. Instructor was nice but really didn't give me any helpful tips when we were in the water. I had to cancel my husbands lesson and did so in plenty of time. I got a huge run around from the surf shack since they have contracts with other vendors online that deal with the payments. I made 5 attempts to get my money back and it was all a run around. Rented a paddlboard for six days for 150. That works out to about 25 dollars a day which is a pretty sweet deal. You could probably do even better if you tried a little. i just didn't put that much effort into it. The other cool thing is if you rent the board at the Mono Kai resort, also called the Five Palms you can go ahead and put that paddlboard right in the ocean right there and get started! I didn't know what to expect with this being my first ever experience learning the arts of surfing but the two instructors Morgan and Scott were absolutely amazing! They took quality time out to give everyone full attention! One of my daughters and I booked a lesson and had a really good time even though the water was very flat that day. They let us keep the boards after our lesson and even let my other daughter have some shoes and rash guard to try it out (she regretted not signing up with us). A big part of the low rating has to do with paying for 2 hour instruction and our instructor, Kyle, cutting out after a hour and 20 minutes. As a massage therapist if someone pays me for a 2 hour massage ya don't stop 40 min early. There was a family with a young daughter so he focused on her which was understandable but when they wanted to leave early, that would have been a great opportunity to give us some instruction. The direction given was pretty minimal. The gear was falling apart. When we got back to the shop there was a different older gentlemen at the counter who didn't say two words to us, let alone ask us anything about the experience and our instructor was gone for the day. My family who lives on island usually goes to Wave Rider and loves it but I always like to try out other smaller operations. Working in the service industry in a resort town, its almost next to impossible not to get a generous cash tip from me but i just couldn't in this case. Will definitely go out again but not with these brahs read more
