My group of 4 had a really great time out on the water with our instructor. Plus, one of the other instructors (James) had Church the dog out in the water next to us and encouraged us to ride with Church! It was such a great time. My group learned how to surf really quickly. Our instructor was easy going, friendly, and seemed to have a lot of fun teaching us, giving us pointers, and being a great sport. Made us feel so great about being beginners and not worrying if we messed up! I recommend bringing or buying shoe boots. The water is shallow where you learn and there are a lot of rocks which will hurt your feet without proper footwear. read more

This review is for the other store but I couldn't find the one in Yelp so I'll post here tho! I rent surf board for 4 hours and I think I liked it. They have variety of sizes and you can pick either soft or hard top. It also come with boots and rash guard. It is really good deal and I only pay $20 for 4 hours. Wave in Kihei was a bit mellow. It is good for beginner and advance but it might difficult to catch waves. Paddle hard ! So here is 2 stars missing part. I was directed as leaving my board and other gears on their truck since my rental due was after their business hour lol! I wasn't comfortable leaving the board on truck without nobody around tho. Hope it won't get stolen. If your rental due is in their business hour then I would give 5 stars . read more

We were extremely lucky to have this chance and get a lesson from Dane Kealoha. It was a group lesson but it was only 3 of us. He got all of us up on the board in no time, and he is a great teacher - it made the whole thing feel easy! There's a photographer who makes pictures of you on the board - those are pricey, but may very well be worth it. read more

Best surfboard rental experience you could have. This place was absolutely awesome. The guy working there was so helpful and extremely knowledgeable. We didn't even do a lesson/class but he make sure to teach us everything we needed to know and gave us helpful tips on how to first learn how to surf before we went out into the water. We were going to do a 4 hour session but he told us that we might be a bit tired after just 2 hours since we were first learning and so we decided on the 2 hour session which was definitely for the best (he was right, we were pretty tired by the end). They were not just in it to get our money but they were really wanting to help us get the best experience possible. Another awesome thing was that we could keep the rentals until after the store was closed and could return them to the rental truck even after hours (and just call them when we turned them and left them a message so they knew we returned the stuff). This was definitely awesome because basically all the surf stores around close by 3pm and so we could still surf even after 3pm (and many of the stores don't allow rentals to be out after they close). This was extremely helpful for us because we got a late start in the day and didn't get to rent until 2pm and we got to keep the rental until 4pm and got our full experience. They also were lenient on rental return time and they were not to charge any extra fees for being over by just a few minutes. We just had to return the rentals within a reasonable time within about 30 minutes or so around when they were supposed to be turned in. They also had a decent board selection even though it was a small store. This is 100% the company to go with if you're looking to rent surfboards on Maui! read more

What an amazing time we had firstt time paddle boarding. Our instructor was Church and his Dad. It was a thrilling time with Church riding out on our board. We had a great lesson and feel confident with what we learned. We were able to get right up. We also saw turtles when we were out which was amazing. My adult daughters had Andrew as an instructor. They lucked out with a 2:1 student:instructor ratio. Totally doable small waves. He had them both up on their first attempts. He asked a few simple questions to find out other athletic experiences, then used words (few) that connected prior experiences to learning to surf. Best part was other instructors from Surf Shack would tag-team to add to the experience via different pointers. Even the shop dogs rode on the students' boards, and Andrew and other instructors would take a rare wave to demonstrate more. One even did a head-stand and surfed backwards ! I was out in the water taking GoPro video and pictures. The instructors were helpful to point where I would get a better angle for the pictures. A staff photographer was also in the water to take pictures available later for a reasonable fee. A great experience! read more

There are a bunch of different surf shops right along this strip. I opted to go for Surf Shack Maui since it seemed a little smaller and cheaper than some of the other operations. I got a standup paddleboard for two hours for $35, and the guy threw in an impromptu 5 minute verbal lesson which was perfect to get me going. My guess is that this is mostly a commodity service unless you're looking to rent higher-end stuff or want private lessons, but Surf Shack Maui did the trick for me! read more

I know surf boards are surf boards, but when it's a high tide advisory in Hawaii, low tide, and you don't open until 7:30am no matter what, that sucks. Water sports follow the weather. if low tide is 5:30am, damnit, open the doors! +1 star for having a great selection of boards, once the tide starts to come back in. read more

I surprised my husband recently with a group surf lesson. The max amount allowed was 6, and it ended up only being himself and 2 others. He went out with James and church (who is totally cute and amazing in the water)! My husband was up on the board within a few minutes. He had an incredible time and James and church were both super helpful in getting him up and running! I was able to sit up on the rocks very close nearby and watch and take pictures. It's a super calm area, great for beginners. I almost wish I had booked myself as well! They also have a photographer out there taking pics, it was well worth purchasing those!! We booked a beginner 2 hour surf lesson here after reading good reviews and have to say it was one of our favorite activities on our trip! Very friendly staff, right across the street from a perfect spot for beginners to learn the art. Our instructor Mike was fantastic, putting us at ease from the get go. He made sure everyone was completely comfortable and perfectly prepared before we got in the water. Mike was friendly and so chilled, and a five star instructor with tons of experience. This was the greatest experience! James and Church were absolutely incredible and had everyone in our class riding waves in no time. He gave very good, clear instructions on what to do and watched you ride the waves to offer advice on how to improve on the next one. He was very protective of students in our lesson and aware of the other groups learning, which we can't say for all of the other instructors out there teaching. One person in our class got hit by a student from another instructor and James was so great handling the situation and making sure she was alright afterward. So anyone that knows me, knows I am less than coordinated and I tend to freak out.....so why would I try surfing? 2 words, my boyfriend. We arrived at 7:45am and was greeted by a very sweet girl who worked the front. She told us our instructor was going to be there any second. Our instructor Kyle then came in and we got sized and went out to go over safety. Before even entering the water, Kyle went over everything you need to know. He definitely eased my nerves a bit. Seeing as my boyfriend picked it up easily, it was nice that Kyle was so patient with me and I even got up a few times without face planting. After surfing (because we had gotten dropped off) Kyle not only took us to the place where the photographer had all our pictures, he took is to our next destination. All in all I would recommend this place and Kyle to ANYONE and EVERYONE! My boyfriend now is looking into continuing his surfing! Thanks again Kyle! One of the best dive tours I've been on. Boat was great, very comfortable ride and very fun. Equipment was in excellent condition, no wear and tear. All the staff were very nice and knowledgeable. Charlie, the captain, was very excellent and the dove masters all know exactly what they're doing. This will definitely be my first choice for any more dives in this area. read more

Saying this place is unorganized is an understatement. Equipment is in sad shape. Late start. Our instructor constantly disappeared we found him smoking behind the cars in the parking lot. He was distracted by a young woman in class and neglected to teach the rest of the class. Go to Maui Wave Riders across the street. They were completely booked, so sad. This place was a lot of fun and I am just amazed at how quickly I was able to get up on the board (even on my first try). Ashley was an amazing instructor. She was kind, professional, and very patient with all her students-- in fact everyone in her group was up riding waves even though it was everyone's first time surfing! I loved the experience so much I came back a second time for a private lesson, with James which was really enjoyable. Great price and super friendly people. Their boards are a definitely used a lot, but they still get you up! Definitely need booties and a rash guard out there. Kayaking with Tyler On a recent trip to Maui we booked a Kayaking Tour through Surf Shack. Our family had an awesome time kayaking and snorkeling with Tyler on Makena Bay and along the shore of Keawala'i and Nahuna. We are a three generation family of seven ranging in age from 10 to 75. We met Tyler on Makena Road near Makena Landing Park. While some of us have kayak experience, some had never been in a kayak, and none of us had ever kayaked on the ocean. Tyler did a terrific job making us all feel comfortable by explaining what we could be expect. He spent time with each of us to ensure we were having a good experience. We spent an hour or so paddling along the shore, and then due to high wind, we returned to Makena Bay, where we spent time snorkeling among the fish and green turtles. Booked the surf lesson for my two teens at 9:15 for a 10 o'clock lesson. Planning is clearly not my strong suit. One teen was more interested in the surf lesson than the other, but Church, the surf dog, quickly won both of them over. They were the only two signed up for 10 o'clock, so it felt much more like a private lesson. James was awesome, and despite stronger than normal wins, the kids had a great time! Both of them got up, catching some small waves. Definitely a great way to spend a morning! read more

We rented 2 boards for an hour for $25. We had never been surfing before but Dan explained to us the basics in the store and off we went! RE: Mona Kai store kayak rental Terrible customer service! The guy pointed out my kayak and didn't give one single pointer such as adjusting the seat straps before getting out on the water. No precautions for the area, no safety tips. Seriously, not ONE comment, suggestion, safety precaution, or anything else to help you have a good time or even where to launch (you have to drag the kayak from the resort to the beach area). You're out of luck if you want some help. He acted like showing me anything would disturb his phone time. Really irritated me to have to tolerate that kind of customer service but the place is well located and reasonably priced and thus two stars instead of one. If the review was split into categories I would give -2 for customer service and +4 for price and location. read more

What an amazing gem! One of my sisters lives in Kihei just up the road. This shop is attached to the 5 Palms Hotel and right next to local access to the beach. Every day my 3 sisters and I went to the beach. This was our first stop. We rented kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear. Anything we needed, they had. Each morning, whoever was manning the store (we met several) was friendly and knowledgeable. At the end of each morning, they would kindly listen to our adventures (I am sure they have heard it all before, but acted liked as excited as we were) and ended with, "Mahalo, see you tomorrow."
