We wanted to try some local ice creams and found this place by accident. Never had ice cream made with coconut milk and we decided to try the original coconut and ginger lemongrass. Both ice creams were creamy and not too sweet. There were bits of mature coconut meat in the original coconut ice cream. If you love coconut, you will love this original coconut ice cream. If you like ginger and lemongrass, ginger and lemongrass is way to go. You will taste a strong ginger with your first bite. You will get the flavor of lemongrass and ginger bits as you eat it. Let me start by saving my husband and I feel as though we are shave ice connoisseurs by now, having tried a half dozen establishments during our stay in Hawaii. However, this was one of our less enjoyable experiences. First and foremost, the ice consistency was lacking in smooth texture and fineness. There were larger chunks like a sno-cone. Secondly, the syrup flavor tasted less natural due to its over-sweetness. This may have been a result of having too much syrup poured on our ice. The one saving grace, along with the great service, is the delicious coconut ice cream awaiting us at the bottom. The ice cream alone may be enough for me return. This place rocks! Though shave ice is definitely Hawaiian, this place offers nostalgia for those of us who grew up loving Icee slushes at the beach on the mainland. One of the flavors I chose was black cherry, and it tasted exactly the way cherry icee used to taste. You get three flavors with a small, and I balanced out cherry with pineapple and lemonade. You get a humongous serving of it for six dollars with tax. Vegans will also be delighted here. We tried the mint chocolate chip coconut ice cream. It was divine! Came in late in the evening last week to have some shave ice after dinner. The older man serving was very nice and I thought he was the owner but said he was a Monkey Employee and the owner is a family friend who has been serving shave ice in Maui for a long time. Think his name was Sonny. Service was great and the shave ice was very tasty. Sonny talked me into putting ice cream in the bottom which I thought was not going to taste good at all....boy I was wrong...always go for the ice cream and they make their own vegan ice cream. Would suggest couple things to owner. Get rid of potato chips...strange to see. Was going to buy t-shirt but only had logo on one side....why not both sides?? I would have bought 2 shirts. Decor is very plain. Be great to have more info on Maui on the wall along with information on the ice cream they sell and make. Vegan ice cream is a great option and great to see on menu. Also suggest giving away the small buttons to kids rather than trying to sell for couple bucks...that was odd too. No advice on ice cream or toppings etc. The ice came out tasting like something you'd get at a state fair back home. Just okay shaved ice. A friend and I split a shaved ice that was humongous, but the syrup didn't quite get to the bottom and the flavors were fairly sweet but lacking in real flavor. We ended up eating the top layer and then throwing the rest of it out since it was syrup-less, and it was kind of hard to discern which flavor was which when we were eating it. Never had a bad flavor from this shop, but we do find service wildly different from different staff members. The first time we came here there was a young lady who was willing to answer all our questions and gave us suggestions to really upgrade our experience. The second time we came the staff was two young men who had their friends at the bar. It felt like they were more interested in their friends than working the shop. We had to keep reminding them to stay on task because when they brought out the snow cap, the friends all asked what it was, and they all got to try it... we had to remind them to put it on our shaved ice because they put it away after letting their friends try it. The shop was nearly empty when we arrived, the man who greeted us was friendly and accommodating. The size was decent, but the ice was over packed and lumped up. I will say that I did enjoy the flavors, but they didn't seem to distribute through the shaved iced which was a little disappointing to say the least. My suggestion to the owner would be to put more flavoring in the cup.
