Am I being punked? Currently here with a coworker. Our server is clearly not a sushi fan. The coconut soup was great, and the sushi was fresh. Our server brought out our food and decided to correct the carrot flower in the center of our meal with her hands... Gross. We enjoyed our meal for the most part but felt rushed. As we were enjoying the remainder of our meal, our server came over to inform us that she had to use the bathroom, but she would be back with the check once she was finished. The icing on the cake was the fake plant that was covered on years of dust sitting next to our table... See photo. The pad Thai was almost tasteless and the noodle beef was not spicy at all. At least they were both savory and not sweet.

This used to be a favorite eatery but after my last experience I won't be back. Service was pathetic - server could not get the order right and questioned our choices. Beverage was not correct. So... if you aren't big into authentic Thai food and just want something "Asian-like" then this place is great. The food will be tasty, I suppose. Since my mother is Thai, I was tremendously disappointed and wish they would not call this Thai food. Call it something else, anything else. And what kind of Thai restaurant serves Sushi? Sushi is Japanese, not Thai, two very different countries with completely opposite takes on cuisine. I was surprised by consistent lack of quality in foods served in Surin 280, and consistently good food and services in Surin West (the one in Five points south). My Pad Prik was about as spicy as mild salsa. Supposed to be spicier than other items on the menu. I would give it two salt shakers instead of three peppers. Sad. Place was nice and clean and service was good. I will come back and be very specific about how much heat I want next time. read more

We went there with a large (loud) group from work and the service was great! I had the shrimp massaman curry - it was amazing, I had never had anything like it. We came here for lunch with the family. As with how it was in the downtown Birmingham location, the quality of food was consistent, especially the Pad Thai, our all time favorite. This time I ordered the catfish which will definitely order again. Yes, it was fried but done lightly and not heavy on breading either. The calamari was just excellent. This restaurant is definitely Thai meets birmingham. It's okay for Thai food but not amazing. I would go back if friends wanted to. Our main complaint was it's not authentic so that's where we were disappointed. The spicy beef is drunken noodles if you are looking for that. Well, I got a chance to visit Surin 280 recently, on a Wednesday, around 530pm. The occasion was my sister in law's birthday. There were five in our group, and we were seated promptly. We ordered various appetizers, a rock and roll for me, while others ordered nigiri sushi, coconut soup and rice noodle rolls. All were proclaimed very good by all that tried some. On the entree front, I lost track of who ordered what, but all portions were generous, and everyone enjoyed theirs thoroughly, and ate their fill. Even our Picky Eater, who has a shellfish allergy, found happiness in his catfish. I got a taste of that, and found it very good. All said and done, our waiter was attentive, our food was great, and our seating was off in a quieter corner where we could talk easily to each other. My only negative comment is about some of the female patrons, who were dressed in gym clothes. Nice views, but, inappropriate attire for a nice casual place like this. read more

We've gone here for several years now and recently we got a new addition to our family. Our newborn is 3 months and cries often whenever we eat out which so it has been hard lately to visit the places we love. We asked one of the hostesses (blonde girl) to seat us someone more private so we don't disturb the entire restaurant. She did just that and remembers our faces every time we come in and sits us private so we're comfortable. I'm so glad we can finally eat out with ease!! read more

The first person you typically see when walking into a restaurant is the host or hostess, well ours was sitting down on a side bench away from the podium so when he spoke to us we had no clue where it was coming from. No welcome smile or even an utterance of a greeting. This same host placed us at a table already being occupied by another customers things while there was seven other places being unused. Once seated he said nothing and turned and walked away. He did this with each customer he seated during our time there. Very cold for a person to be your host. Now let's get to the food. Now the food wasn't the worst I've had but it wasn't very fresh or warm when it should of been. I don't know if the place was under staffed or what but it seemed very backed up and a little unkept. On a big plus side our waiter Davis was wonderful. Very attentive and pleasant. Always had a smile and wasn't rude when I sent a glass back because black specks were floating in the cup of soda. I come here often and the food is always great. Service on the other hand is only probable. As in you may or may not get any. Walk in and there were 4 servers and hostess sitting down messing around on cell phones. It wasn't busy but not an excuse. Server had his back to us whole time not giving 2 sh**s about us. Coming from someone who has worked in this industry in the past, this makes me furious. There is a manager here that obviously gives no sh**s either. My wife and I ate there Saturday night. Walked right in at 6:30 and were seated right off. The waiter came to the table within minutes. We ordered the Basil Rolls (a healthier alternative to egg rolls). They were good. We had a seafood mix soup which is served in a volcano bowl. It was very good. Finally we each had the Shrimp Maramam, a dish that I had been craving since the last time I had eaten there. Excellent, but have the waiter add a little spice to it. With a glass of wine our meal was $64, which I consider a good value. read more

Surin 280 is a very, very busy restaurant near several office complexes. But that's no excuse for poorly trained wait staff, bad food service, long waits and dour hostesses. I've eaten there several times in the last months for business meetings and it's always the same. The Thai food is so-so but the sushi uses less than fresh seafood, small portions and is a poor value - particularly if you get the smaller maki rolls. I've had better, fresher rolls at the Publix supermarket. read more

This was our favorite sushi restaurant, but the quality of the sushi went down over the past couple of years. The prices went up (understandably) but for example the tuna on the nigiri got thinner. Management has gotten stingy with condiments like extra lemon or extra sauce. On my last visit I requested extra siracha sauce and the waiter had to confer with the manager before bringing me a very small amount. The old grey mare ain't what she used to be. read more
