The menu is full of so many tasty options, but I always stick to my usual comfort meal: spicy coconut soup (garnished with cilantro, mushrooms, scallions, and tofu), and the pad Thai noodles (with shrimp, chicken, scallions, fried egg, peanuts, and bean sprouts). I placed my order online and picked it up at the restaurant. As per usual, the employees were wearing masks, and so was I. As far as sustainability, the containers were made of styrofoam, so they weren't environmentally-friendly. In any event, the food was so flavorful and I highly recommend it! read more

I ordered Thai Noodle with chicken & double shrimp sushi roll for pick up. I always see this place with lots of cars in the parking lot so wanted to give it a try. The Thai noodle or Pad Thai was quite bland and the noodles were mushy. I can't tell you how the double shrimp roll was because I didn't get it. Man is the food good but the place smells like a dirty bar BATHROOM with a hint of dirty towel. Things were sticky and gross. But plates, cups and utensils were nice and clean. I've been going here for over ten years by now and the food has always been great, hasn't changed at all really. However the service is increasingly awful. Like they're TRYING to hire the most antisocial, inefficient, painfully awkward people possible and giving them no direction to improve. I don't need a waiter/waitress to smile constantly or make small talk but they do need to have some grasp of the menu items (why do I have to point at every single thing I order before the waitress understands?), actually check on the table, and y'know, do their job. My in-laws' favorite Thai place. I didn't know it existed until I moved to 280. It took me a couple orders to warm up to it (food culture shock), but I really like it now. The chicken pad Thai is absolutely phenomenal. The California rolls and the fried calamari are also family favorites. Best coconut curry soup around!! But it starts with a door greeting every time I'm here and glad your back. Then to the sushi and sake!! Also the crispy fried catfish with house teriyaki is a favorite. Never been let down here. Food and service have been great. Only complaint is the big bowl of coconut curry soup is can't get spoon around inside bowl because of shape and must pour out at risk in container or eat. This place has always been a dependable go to place. Staff is always friendly and the place clean. Decent sized parking lot so that's not an issue. Plenty of seating with tables and booths. Not a very big bar but that is not their specialty. The lunch specials are decently priced and come with their delicious coconut soup. I had the chicken masaman with avocado which is very flavorful and comes with rice on the side. Also had their Thai noodle which is good and their sushi is also delicious and well-made. Would not suggest the pad-see-u as it is very greasy. The problem is a few of the sushi rolls are way overpriced in my opinion. About two years ago they shot the price up overnight which was a big turn off. I truly believe they overdid it on their specialty sushi and are charging too much. This place has decent sushi. Honestly not the best. I ordered the submarine roll. Nothing to really brag about. My son, however, ordered the Pad See U, which was amazing. I'm weird about Thai food, but the Pad See U would be the only thing I order from this place from now on. I think one of the things that killed it for me was the atmosphere. Environment: I haven't eaten in at this location, but I've gotten takeout quite a few times. Food: Thai noodle - sauce isn't very flavorful, and completely lacks spice even though I have repetitively asked to get it extra spicy. (-1 star) Spicy coconut soup - tangy, spicy, delicious. One of my favorite dishes at Surin. Could be spicier though. Always worth adding it onto any meal. Price: A bit overpriced for what you get. I'm used to paying about $10 per dish for Thai food in San Francisco, so paying $13 for the same dish in Birmingham (despite way cheaper operating cost for the restaurants here) is a bit much. Additionally, considering the lack of flavor in the sauce, just not worth it. Service: Based on takeout only: I was told to come in 20 minutes, and I did, but ended up having to wait for my food. It took about 35 minutes to get one dish of pad Thai and one soup around 7pm on a weekend. (-1 Star) read more

Came here on a Saturday evening. They were not very busy and we were seated right away. The atmosphere does not really fit with the menu very well. We started off with the Namsod and it was pretty tasty. I had the Pad Prik and it was just ok wasn't really anything special about it. It was also kind of pricey when you compare to the other Thai places in the area. I got a side of the spicy coconut soup and it was my favorite part of the meal, but also pricey for the portion size. Met up with a friend for dinner around 5pm and was sad to see how empty the restaurant was. I didn't take into account that we were dining on the early side--was so glad to see the restaurant fill up while we dined. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. We had a 2 hour meeting and he respected that we didn't want to be rushed out. I ordered the Shrimp Pad See U and my friend ordered the dim sum appetizer (she had a late lunch and wasn't very hungry). I am old school with my Pad See U and want to eat it with rice--it helps it last longer and that's just how I always enjoyed it. It was delicious as always. I believe by this point, I have reviewed the other Surin locations in town. So I supposed it is about time I close out the last one. I know a lot of people have a certain perception of Surin. And authenticity probably is not their strong suit in the grand scheme of things. But as a lowly boy from south Alabama, Surin was one of my first Thai food (and sushi) experiences. And I instantly loved it. So it will always have a soft spot in my heart. I have frequented this location primarily for lunch since I rarely find myself down 280 at night. The lunch menu is one of the things I really enjoy about Surin. They have the chicken noodle bowl that is always filling and delicious. And of course the coconut tofu soup comes with each lunch special. And although I have now found other coconut soups I like more in town, their's is still very good. Once thing you can say about Surin is that they are consistent. They food quality is always very high and this location isn't no different. The service here is a little spottier, but I have never had a truly "bad" experience. Overall they are a solid 4 stars in my book. read more

I've been going to Surin for something like 8 years now. Here are some highlights: Coconut soup (free with lunch) - excellent! Supercrunch - excellent if u like smoked salmon and crunch (the crunch is unique... good for sushi beginners) Kaboom maki - excellent for shrimp folk (not too spicy) Surin Baskets - used to be excellent, but now they bring them unfilled... you have to put the chicken in the basket yourself and there's not enough cilantro. They used to fill them before serving and top each one with a cilantro leaf. The sweet sauce with cucumber in it that comes with is sooo yummy if you're into sweet sauces. Other non-sushi options: they have an excellent chicken dish and catfish dish. Their Pad See Yew is amazing too. I've taken scared-of-sushi folk here and they've really enjoyed these! read more

I'm a fan of all the different Surin locations around town and this one is no different. With a large waterfall in the center, the room is large and inviting. My staples here are the crispy squid app, the spicy beef salad, Thai BBQ chicken, and any combination of sushi. I've never gone wrong with any of those, but every now and then I branch out. Tonight, it was the Sushi/Sashimi Combination. This ended up being a great choice. It was 13 pieces of sushi with about 12 slices of sashimi. All of it was delicious. This is probably my favorite sushi restaurant and I know it's my son's. It's conveniently located on Highway 280 in Birmingham right before the intersection of interstate 459. It was a Tuesday night, so we had no wait. We were seated immediately. The hostess was very friendly. Our waiter, on the other hand, was very matter-of-fact. Not much personality at all. I like to think people like that are very friendly, he just might have been having a bad day. We started off with an appetizer of potstickers. The sauce that accompanied them was almost better than the potstickers themselves. It was spicy with a hint of coconut. My son ordered spicy tuna rolls and salmon rolls. I had the spicy seafood plate, which, according to the menu, was one of the spiciest items on the menu. It failed to live up to that reputation. I detected very little spice at all. However, everything was cooked very well and was delicious. In short, this restaurant is very well worth your time. Stop by if you are in the area. read more

Going here shows you how a chain restaurant is started and can be good. The service was really good and the space is big and open - it can be good for a date or a large group. I'd avoid the sushi/sashimi since it's pretty generic but their cooked food is really good. The Spicy Coconut Soup is delicious, I had the one with Tofu. I had the Shrimp in Roasted Pineapple as my entree and it was amazing - it was a great balance of sweet and spicy. I'd eat it all the time if I could. My girlfriend got the lamb during our visit and they overcooked it but were super nice and re-cooked it to medium-rare when we told them. read more

Super starving last night and didn't want fast food. We decided to go to Surin 280. First of all, I'm super appreciative that they do not close until 9:30 on a Sunday Night. We arrived around 8:40. Naturally, it wasn't packed due to a late Sunday night. We were quickly seated. I did recognize the old lay out of what use to be an O'charley's. The wooden labyrinth gave it away. I could be wrong. We were greeted by our waitress that immediately asked for our drinks but then went back to wiping and setting up tables. Little odd to me, but sure. We finally got our drinks and the lady asked what we would like to eat. My wife ordered chicken fried rice and I had the Thai noodle. The waitress seemed a little frazzled and began to share with us about a small altercation she had with a customer who claimed she stole something from her. The story ended with the customer finding the "assumed stolen item" and them hugging it out. She then explained how she had worked three overtimes and is ready to go home. A little unprofessional, but I think we have all been there and look for someone to listen. We didn't mind and she actually was quite entertaining and nice. We got our food. It was great! Overall, it was a great night. Atmosphere was great and clean. People were friendly. The waitress was great and hopefully she got the rest she needed. I would eat there again. read more

Please take my review of Surin lightly, as I'm not your typical diner to Thai restaurants. I'm not much of a sushi fan, nor do I venture too far into Thai cuisine. I will say, however, that even their simplest of dishes are quite tasty, with my favorites being their egg rolls and Satay Beef (appetizers), and Pad Prik (simple pork and peppers dish with sticky rice). My wife, friends and I recently descended upon the place this weekend, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The food (including the items above) were well-prepared, and the wait staff were very welcoming, even considering we arrived maybe half-an-hour prior to the restaurant closing. Like another reviewer mentioned, it's worth a try if you're new in town, or a regular and looking for a change of pace. Man oh man. My husband and I cleaned out plates so I'm glad that I took a picture before hand. The atmosphere here was nice and our server was very kind. I enjoy a place that I don't have to ask for my glass to be refilled and he kept it going the entire time. Now on to the food. For an appetizer we had the calamari which was tasty. Our main meals were the Thai bbq chicken and the Thai noodle (I asked that it be made spicy). I pretty much ask for all things spicy and this did not disappoint. I love the spicy coconut soup as well. It's my favorite. I literally ate my dish like a dog, I don't know if I looked up from it besides to take a drink. This will be one of more brief reviews.... I have eaten here so often that the staff knows what I drink. 90% of the time I have sushi, its always fresh and well made. I absolutely love Surin in Birmingham. The coconut soup is the best, they have good sushi, as well as fried rice. My friends and I were so excited to go back. We decided to go to the 280 location which was a terrible mistake. Will never go to this location again. The service was absolutely terrible. We waited 45 minutes for our drinks. Our server kept saying the bar was swamped, but we watched multiple people sitting at the bar receive drinks while waiting on ours. Two of my friends just ordered a glass of wine, and waited 45 minutes. When I told the manager about it, he was very rude. I stated I believed the drinks should be taken off our bills at this point or cancelled because we had already received all of our food. They proceeded to make me the wrong drink, and they didn't compensate anything on our bill. They were quiet rude. We will continue going to the other locations in Birmingham. read more

Crunchy, fresh, and displayed beautifully. Their Duck dish was delish! Nice texture (crunchy on outside, tender inside), temperature (hot upon delivery), dipping sauce (unique taste w/ a little kick), amount (more than enough), and presentation (pretty cool). I'm not real big on the price, but I get it, its duck. Two additional stars of the show: Pad Thai and definitely try their Coconut Curry Soup! Drink: Extensive Martini menu, Bass Ale (nice), Green Tea (served in kettle, well done!), and wine selection. No complaints there. That's about all the good things I've found. The thai BBQ chicken was 2 giant rotisserie chickens with some fish sauce. The fried rice portions were small and flavorless. The chickens tasted like they've been reheated. The Kaboom Maki rolls were very warm! The pool of curry it sat on could use a lot more flavor. I had to use my actual curry dish and soy sauce to bring out any hint of flavor. The roasted duck in red curry is not spicy at all. Our server was nice. We ordered 3 rolls and they came out quickly. Nothing really blew me away flavor wise and definitely not worth the $51 bill. The atmosphere is all wrong. Pretty solid place with variety for the family. We started the meal with Surin Baskets and Crab puffs. Both of which are great. I had the sashimi platter and is was solid. The only fish I don't like is mackerel and it was on there. A waste of three pieces of sashimi :(. Otherwise good. Daughter had sweet and sour chicken-good. The youngest had fried rice and it was good as well. I don't think I have ever been disappointed in a Surin meal. I don't think you can go wrong here. read more
