First time experiencing Ayurvedic treatment and it's truly enlightening! From the warm oil to the scalp massage, each step of the Vishesh 60 minute treatment was absolute bliss. I'm a fan and convert. The treatment room itself was calming and peaceful. Mine had a private bathroom and shower so I was able to rinse off post treatment. However, one other person in our group of four did not have a shower in her treatment room, so if this is important or needed, I'd recommend requesting a room with the private bathroom. There are no other communal shower or spa facilities within the space. As far as the massage itself, it was a true deep tissue focused on the areas we discussed beforehand. Outstanding massage and a real professional masseuse (although I forgot her name! therapist had mid length blond hair ). Definitely recommend for a day spa experience when combined with lunch at Calabra! read more

The girls really knew what they were doing! Amazing 4 hand massage. Very well synchronized abhyanga. Love the actual treatment, tea & sweet bread. Felt a bit chaotic and rushed. I would have expected a much more relaxing loving atmosphere. Had a few people there that seemed like they were trying to get organized for an event perhaps. The receptionist was a bit spacy and distant. She charged the wrong person's treatment on my card. When asked if she can provide proof that the wrong charge was canceled, she just said it probably didn't even go through cause we voided it immediately. The Eastern music was soothing and helped me prepare to receive the massage--a four handed massage with sesame oil heated with herbs. I did not want to remove the oil. Nereida was literally amazing 5/5. I went there for a Mama treatment (I was over 40 weeks pregnant) and wanted to treat myself and she fully delivered. The face oil is insane if you're into rose. It's a splurge but worth at least one try and hopefully your practitioner is great. 3/5 for most everything else - Not really any amenities (besides their spa bread and their meditation room). You don't even get a robe to hang in, no sauna or steam areas, etc. you also have to walk from lobby outside to get to treatment rooms which is kind of interesting . read more

Went to Surya to celebrate my birthday when staying at the Proper for the Signature Abhyanga. My first four handed and Ayurvedic treatment. Wow, can I return to a two handed massage again? I just don't know. The overnight cooked oils are amazing and smell so nice! I wish I remember the two therapists names that took care of me, they were very kind and gracious. I will echo what other reviews say that it doesn't have that full spa vibe, I had to be escorted to my treatment room outside and it was the random day in LA when it rained. But hey, it's more of a wellness center and I understand that. The design is impeccable. My only feedback is the waiting room, the tea and the bread was very relaxing and yummy, but I don't need someone sitting next to me tapping away loudly on their cell phone full blast while I wait. It seems like a quiet meditation room, so maybe they could suggest people to silence their phones. I will definitely be back because I really want to try shirodhara! read more

Sadly, I have to agree with some of the other reviews here. I have been following Surya for several years. I was excited to try their new location and treat myself to a massage. From the moment I stepped through the door, it was all downhill. The blonde woman working the front desk was incredibly rude. Didn't even acknowledge me or the other two guests who came in. We were escorted to a "waiting room", which was basically a corner near the front desk. Was told that they were running 15 minutes behind, even though I was the first appointment of the day. While my massage therapist was very kind, the massage itself was disappointing. I booked the deep tissue massage, and the pressure was light and her technique left much to be desired. Myself and another guest waited five minutes to check out while the front desk was unstaffed. Finally, the blonde woman came back and said no more than 3 words to us as we checked out. The whole experience was bizarre and utterly disappointing. Given what I paid for my massage, I would have expected five star service and an unforgettable massage. read more

The most unique spa I've ever been to - and I've been to a lot of really good spas over the years both in and outside of the US. I was looking for a wellness retreat type of thing and booked three treatments in 2 days. I did a body scrub with Shirodara and the second day a deep tissue with Shirodara as well as the Lights and Bliss. I'm obsessed with the oil they use and I ended up buying the oils they used on me. They smell soooo good. I wish I could use them every day! They warm up the oils and pour on you along the lymphatic system. The four hand massage was like a well orchestrated dance and it was good. Read a lot of reviews saying the pressure wasn't hard enough, perhaps they took in the feedback because I thought the pressure was just right and I'm used to hard deep tissue massages. The pressure was more on the gentle side but sufficient to relax my muscles. The surya bread was also amazing. I walked away feeling so relaxed, more relaxed than I usually am coming out of a regular spa. The Shirodara really worked. The only two advice: 1. The spa was outside of the hotel so we had to walk out on the street to go to the spa. It wasn't too bad but I wish there was an indoor way there. 2. The lights and bliss didn't feel like it was well thought out. The first 45 mins was a four hand massage and the last half was a voiceover playing over radio. The instructions were not really compatible with the spa since the voiceover assumes you're sitting up and the spa makes you lay down. So definitely can improve there. I don't complain though because the four hand massage was really nice. Thank you Surya spa for bringing me so much peace and relaxation! read more
