My husband and I were visiting Norfolk, VA last week, November 4. We were meeting his high school classmate for dinner in nearby city, Virginia Beach. We decided to pass by this Filipino Restaurant for take-out to bring to his high school classmate's dinner meet-up at her house. We got Pinakbet, Beef Kaldereta, cassava cake, sapin-sapin, and biko. Everything was good, except when we were about to eat the Biko. Lo, and behold, when we removed the plastic packaging, a foul smell came from the Biko dessert, and it looked moldy. We just threw away the Biko dessert. We noticed that there was no expiration date on the Biko packaging. It was a mistake to not notice the lack of expiration, but this is a health violation, and I will not come back to this place, if ever I visit Norfolk again. read more

If you're Filipino, chances of you having been here for one reason or another is pretty high. And if you haven't been here yet, well... here's my take. They offer a variety of food "turo-turo" style. What this literally translates to is "point-point" so you basically just point to the food you would like -- cafeteria style. Choices change from time to time but they have your usual staples everyday: adobo, Pancit, lumpia, Turon. They have peanut butter ox tail stew sometimes, or menudo, or dinuguan. These are more native dishes but all delicious nonetheless. My favorite is their vegetable chop suey. Their lumpia is a decent size as well. It really annoys me when I see teeny tiny lumpia for customers. There's 3 rooms at Susan's. One is your everyday cafe with tables to eat and run. Then there's 2 other banquet rooms you can rent for private parties and they're different sizes. They cater your parties as well and decorate how you would like with almost any color you request. I can't even begin to tell you how many parties I've been to here. Really nice space and they're generous in food servings. You want karaoke or lone dancing? They'll hook you up!! The con to this place, as is typical in most Filipino restaurants is their lack of AC! I'm gonna go ahead and say it but Filipino people can be real cheapskates when it comes to things like the AC and heater. They just refuse to turn it on. So what I do is I find one thing that stands out and I order that when friends and co-workers suggest it. ENTER THE LUMPIA! I don't care if you call it egg rolls or lumpia. I was impressed during my entire interaction with Susan's Kitchenette. I'm Filipino American and don't normally frequent Filipino restaurants. I prefer to cook the food myself. However, I was pressed for time and needed to order 20 fresh(not fried) Lumpia. I could kick myself the one time I don't take a picture of food! They were professional during the call and when I picked up the order. A greeting and smile goes a long way! A man even offered me a bag to cover myself because it was pouring rain!! As I looked at the food in the case, the first thing I noticed is that there wasn't a lot of grease floating in the food. Loaded grease and rude service were the reasons I stayed away from many Filipino owned establishments for several years. In addition to the fresh Lumpia, I ordered fresh fried Turon(fried plantain) & bulaklak(fried intestines). Never tried the bulaklak before. Not bad but, would prefer chicharons. The fresh Lumpia....Yummm! I love the way they make their own crepes. If you like veggies & aren't allergic to peanuts...try this! It's served with a peanut sauce. Good stuff. Turon was gone by the time I wanted to try. Meaning, the party I brought the food to tore it up! So, great job Susan's! So, all I can comment on is the lumpia (beef eggrolls on the menu). We did a taste test as family to see how these tasted. We had ordered some from Glory's Bakery last year and weren't impressed. Susan's was pretty good. Not the greatest, but good. The people there are super nice. I've read about people getting to sample the various items there, but we were never offered anything both visits there. The second visit was to pick up a catering order of lumpia that I would bring up to DC. I called ahead (only needed to call ahead 30 mins. prior for a 100pc. order), but still ended up waiting almost 20 minutes when I arrived. Still, everyone was really nice and the place had a steady stream of Filipino and non-Filipino customers at 2pm. If we ever have a hankering for or have guests requesting Filipino food, we probably will be back here to dine. read more

I ordered pancit and lumpia for a going away party for a co-worker, it was being finished up when I arrived. There was no where to sit while waiting, nor was a chair offered. The lunch food available looked and smelled delicious, I ended up getting some beef stew to take back for a later meal. The pancit and lumpia was a big hit at work and a good value. Inside the restaurant there are many items for sale including some tasty looking pastries. Stayed in Norfolk for a week with my partner in crime and by midweek, we were getting tired of pizza, burgers, the usual take out. We wanted some Filipino comfort food so I stopped by Susan's to get some carryout. They are located in a small strip mall so parking is not an issue. I ordered two combo #3 (2 entree with rice). I got the kare-kare (a peanut curry type), sinigang (a slightly sour soup), beef stew, and pork adobo. We were excited to eat this in our hotel! All tasted fairly decent but my husband and i were disappointed with the kare-kare because all they gave us was small bits of tripe and vegetables - no meat. So Sad. Also, they gave a small tiny pork rib with the sinigang. We were also saddened by this. They have a small seated section if you choose to eat there. We don't come to the Norfolk area often so i don't know how this compares to other Filipino eateries. read more

The 411: this is a local spot at Virginia beach that has incredible Filipino dishes that are irresistible. The meals are also very cheap and is made fast. I enjoy the combo number 3 meal, which is a big pile of rice (brown or white) or pancit (Filipino noodles). I get half pancit/ half rice. It also comes with two entrees (they have so much to choose from!) When I go, I enjoy the fried milkfish (which is marinated in vinegar. You can eat the whole fish which is butterfly cut. It's crispy and meaty...perfect Filipino fish heaven! I also enjoy all the adobo but especially the pork. Nice and balanced with fat and lean meat. Their adobo is nicely tangy from vinegar and salty from soy sauce and has a nice onion flavor as well. Classic adobo flavor! The sinigang is also one of my favorites. It's a pork soup that is sour and is packed with yummy veggies. A great pallet cleanser! They also serve lumpia (Filipino egg rolls), siopao (steamed pork buns), and at least 10 other beef, chicken, pork and veggie dishes. All of which are ready to be scooped onto your rice! TIPS: -don't be intimidated by ordering! I would get a combo meal since they're cheap an you get rice and/or noodles. -if you don't know the names of dishes, just point to them! -they have complimentary coffee! It's free so you are not allowed to make comments about the quality. Enjoy the hospitality! -they also have peperoncini and soy sauce/fish sauce that you can add to your dishes for extra flavor. -my favorite part is their homemade vinegar with black pepper and garlic. Add it to your adobo for extra zing! -food is served cafeteria style. It's up to you to determine which dishes are freshest. If it looks like it's been sitting out a while, don't get it! -I guess they serve dinuguan only on certain days...I went on a Tuesday and they didn't have any Bottom line: this place is CHEAP and FILLING and AUTHENTIC and DELICIOUS. Once walking into this restaurant the aroma is just amazing smells like walking into a family party with having everything inside. The ladies are so welcoming and helpful. The employee's are very nice however, the food here does not taste good. I also found some kind of insect in my food. It's cheap though but, you get what you pay for! I callled ahead,picked up my food and was left with no option exxcept to eat what I could. Also this place is not every sanitary at all and it has a bad smell. The display of the food is good though however, it's not as good as it looks. There's also at least 15 flies flying around the food and landing in it. I understand that you can't stop a few flies from coming in but, if there's that many flies constantly staying around a resturant that means that something isn't clean. I didn't even know it was Filipino food before about a year ago when i was looking for somewhere to go get some pancit. When i finally found out i was there in a minute. It was great! I ordered to go for a party at home. But i got the chance to hang out for a little while waiting for my food to come out. The inside is split between two dining halls. One that looked to be for large private parties, and the other that resembled the cafeteria style places I've been to in P.I. Close together seating, ultra casual, with self serve stations for condiments and water, and TVs playing the news. Parking is good but tight; it's in a strip mall but the spots are close together. The restaurant is bustling and the staff was busting their butts feeding two full dining rooms with people coming in non stop to make take-out orders. FOOD: I ordered the bbq chicken skewers, pancit and lumpia. Everything was fantastic!!! Tasted just like the food in the P.I. The food came out hot, in the right quantities and labeled in large tins for ease of use at my party. And ALL THE FOOD WAS GONE before the party was over. EVERYTHING. SO fast and SO gone that i didn't get pictures. I messed up i know. But I'll be back to get more and take pics for sure. read more

Someone told me about this restaurant yesterday and I had to try it since I was in the area. I really wanted some lumpia. You pay for the lumpia by the piece which I like. I believe they were .65 per piece. However, I've had better lumpia. It was just ok. I've actually made better lumpia myself...IMO. There was a rather strong celery taste but they were fried to perfection. I also ordered a small order of the pancit with chicken. I didn't care for that either. They put out a fresh order of crispy pork that looked yummy. I'd like to try that if I ever visit this restaurant again. read more

I can't wait to come back next time to try more. As many times as I've rode past and heard how good the food was, I've never come in to enjoy. Well my craving for lumpia for lunch and a peak at their menu sent me here. I entered and knew right off I was going for some lumpia and one of their lunch specials. I was welcomed when I entered and since the entrees weren't labeled, someone happily helped naming the many entrees they had to offer. Everything sounded good so I asked what was their most popular dish...chicken Adobo and beef stew. I was feeling the beef stew today and even though the special came with rice, i was offered Pancit as an option. Sign me up for some of that, I love Pancit. I ate both pieces of the crispy crunchy meat and veggie filled lumpia before I left the parking lot. I started to go back for more but I didn't want to be greedy. When I opened my nicely cling wrapped to go container I smelled the aroma of deliciousness. The portion I received enough for two. Just two stars for this review. I've been to Susan's many times for eat-in and take-out and their food is usually great but yesterday was a big disappointment. Ordered the pancit and lumpia combo for eat-in and a large container of crispy lechon (roast pork) to go. The pancit tasted burned, like somebody had tried to salvage it after it got scorched. I complained to the young server and she said she would substitute fried rice which was OK with me but she gave me garlic rice instead. Lumpia was not as good as it usually is. Maybe they didn't have the "A-Team" on yesterday. I'll go back again but if my next trip is a disappointment that's it. I have other options for Filipino food. read more

Went in for lunch.. no pancit or lumpia available and it was not even 11:30am yet. The young lady at the counter says white rice or brown rice or nothing.. thank God the guy came from the back and says if you wait 10 minutes you can get the pancit and lumpia. So I paid and waited for my two orders of both. It stays pretty busy in there at lunch. My food finally comes out, definitely more like 15-20 minutes later but I had the time to wait this time. I cracked open my container in the car.. I was hungry! It was good, not great. Same as any work potluck order. It was fresh and a good price so I can't complain. I sampled almost 10 different dishes, and all of them were very over salted. Maybe it was just a bad day, but the salt was overwhelming! I actually had to spit a few of the samples out! But I settled with the beef stew, and while it was tender I was the least saltiest of the things I tried, it was still a little oversalted. The quality of the food has gone down since I was last there, as well as the serving sizes. The quality used to be so hot and fresh and perfectly seasoned and the serving used to be so big, I would be stuffed! I do not know what has happened to this place but please please please ask for samples before you order your food, because it might not taste quite right, or quite how you remembered. This place is kind of my boyfriends and I's go-to place for home made Filipino food. The place is a walk- in restaurant, that also have 2 other ballrooms for debuts or for other party occasions. For food options they have combos (drinks are separate), they have meat entrees, and veggie options. Their price are very decent for the amount you pay for. My personal favorite there are their Lechon with Mang Thomas sauce(fried pork dish), pakbet (veggie dish), and sinagang na baboy (Filipino native soup (sour) with pork ribs)and of course your choice of White/Brown Rice and pancit (Filipino noodle cuisine). I wasn't enthralled with the food, but there was one dish that I had to make sure I bite my tongue on. Their chicken adobo was... Maybe... Better than my mom's. I'm sorry mom! It had the right amount of vinegar to get my taste buds dancin'. Other dishes like the lumpia and the Lechon were just alright. The Lechon wasn't quite meaty enough for me. Yay! First time having actual Filipino food..was leaving the area to head back to NN, and stopped with the bf to get an impromptu lunch. The interior is very..hole in the wall almost. I noticed 2 banquet rooms attached to the main serving area. Cafeteria style seating area right to the left of the main room. They have breads and other snacks next to the door, and a fridge with more prepared goods. The bf is more versed in Filipino food than I, so I let him do the ordering. We got the Pancit, Chicken adobo, lumpia and rice..which I'm assuming are the safer general options. They gave big portions, and I liked that they had a variety of sauces on the front table in the seating area (with the napkins and utensils). The chicken adobo was very good, I think they use chicken thighs? The chicken was moist and tender, and the sauce was so good! I tried to pour the sauce over the rice, but it didn't work out too well. The lumpia was nice, crispy and hot.. I think there was a lot of tongue burning there. I wasn't a big fan of Pancit, I think it just reminded me of a drier, shorter, Filippino version of Korean glass noodles (jjapchae). I've finally had the chance to experience Susan's Kitchenette. This is another situation where I lived right down the street for 6 years and NEVER bothered to check them out. Well, last weekend, my future sister in law picked up some take out. She showed up with meatballs, sweet & sour chicken and another beef dish that I cannot identify at this point in time (I know, sue me, I'm a terrible pinay). The dishes she brought over were all served with steamed white rice. The rice was like out of this world delish for some reason. I think my taste buds are way too used to brown rice. Everything I sampled was good. Not like my mommy's home cooking, but worth another visit. Came here recently for lunch with my family before driving to New York. IM SO HAPPY WE DID. I remember coming here in the past but not really loving my experience. However, when I came here.. I really enjoyed my food. I love the sinigang (traditional Filipino sour soup) and lumpia (egg roll) here. Also if you ask for just the "sabaw" or soup on the side, it's free and they are pretty generous with it. For 4 meals with lots of rice and two different "sides" for each and a bowl of puto, we spent around $40. No need to ask for extra rice because they give A LOT of rice here. I barely put a dent into my food but I was very full. Great if ever you're pressed for time since it's a "turo turo" restaurant. Therefore, everything is already cooked. You just have to point at what you want. read more

I couldn't remember if I liked the place or not so I picked up some lunch the other day to refresh my memory. Don't get me wrong, the food is better than Maymar or Mary's (or whatever that place is called now) because I didn't find any of those plastic price tag things in my food, but I'd probably be struck by lightning if I claimed this was the best Filipino restaurant in Virginia Beach. Struck. By. Lightning. I ordered the 1 entree (diniguan) + 3 lumpia + rice combo and a small side of palabok. Perhaps it's my own fault for ordering 2 of my all-time favorites (diniguan and palabok) because I was seriously, seriously let down. I'm about 95% sure the sauce for the palabok is straight out of a 'just add water' packet, and if it's not, YIKES. Let's not forget that the noodles were a very good mix of under/over-cooked which almost deserves another star because I have no idea how anyone could even accomplish that. I don't even want to fully discuss the lumpia because it still hurts my stomach to think about it-- it was old, really greasy and the entire wrapper was chewy. WHO DOES THAT?! Their major saving grace was the diniguan. Right before I ordered I asked the guy what kind of diniguan it was ("is the diniguan made with JUST meat or you know...other stuff too?") and it was like the heavens had opened and angels were playing harps/trumpets behind me.... he said it was just pork! The sauce was also thicker than at other places (which speaks volumes in itself) and the flavor would've been perfect had they put in some hot peppers to steep in the sauce. Would I go back here again? For the diniguan and the 'make you feel better about your life' acting on TFC that they have playing at all times, yes. For anything else, pass. read more
