The sushi is mediocre to me, but some of my friends love this place for some reason. Maybe I just need new friends lol

I've gone here a couple times with friends and never really had any problems until yesterday. I meet my dad and sister for lunch around 3. The place was pretty dead save for a couple people at the bar and service was VERY slow considering how empty it was and the waitress was rather rude. She acted like we were bothering her if we asked for water refills or extra napkins. We ordered The Love Boat, a California roll, and a Crunchy roll. The sushi was decent but definitely not the best I've tasted for what this place charges. For the three items we ordered it was $58. My experience up until paying the bill was about 3 stars. My dad and I decided to split the bill on two separate cards. My dad tipped on his card and I was going to tip in cash but before I could pull my spare change out the waitress noticed that I didn't write in a tip on the receipt and immediately questioned why there was no tip. I told her I was paying tip in cash and she just nodded and walked away with our signed receipts. I thought that was really rude and unprofessional of her to question a customer why there was no tip. I was willing to leave a decent tip considering how slow and rude she was but after that I left a $2 tip for my half of the bill. That really dropped my experience to a one star. After my recent experience I'll be taking my business to RA sushi at Del Amo mall. Better quality sushi for the price and much better customer service. read more

Solid, reliable sushi joint in San Pedro. They do have a few odd americanized rolls, but their main sushi rolls are very good. I've eaten here numerous times and have never had a bad dish. Their vegetable tempura is fantasic. read more

The hubby and I have been here before but we were not happy with the service, so we avoided this place up until this visit. This visit was nothing like our last visit. We decided on the all you can eat which they reduced the price due to an anniversary or something. I decided to try this place since my favorite sushi restaurant in San Pedro (senfuku) was closed. The reviews made Sushi21 seem promising. But was I wrong. When we first got there, the waitress was rude. She didn't greet us, she grabbed two menus and dropped it off at a table. We we not sure if she was seating us or doing something else. Then she walked back up to us and pointed at the table. We figured that maybe she was just having a bad day. The first thing we ordered was eel sushi. When I picked it up there was a piece of black curly hair in it. When we asked for a new one she took it away. We are pretty sure they just replated it and brought it back out as the pieces looked exactly the same. The rest of the sushi was okay...nothing to rave about. And the salmon was chewy. We also asked for two waters....and when we got them, one had black debris in it as if the cup was dirty. At that point we asked for the check and left. We will not be back. read more

First I'd like to say I've been going to this place for years. Decided to take my mother-in-law out for sushi dinner and it had been a while since I had been here. WOW, big mistake! The man who ran it before was welcoming from the minute you walked in and had good service. Now you have the worker running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Service was not just bad but by the time we received our order it was only a partial order. We finally canceled the remaining order and asked for the check. They should be happy I even left a tip! The owners wife of this place has stopped me from coming. Her service is terrible, and her attitude is worse. The sushi is ok, but the service really kills it. If you don't tip "enough" be prepared to be followed to your car and asked for more money, and that's not an exaggeration. read more

We are avid Sushiya(located on Western in San Pedro) patrons, but this review is not being written with a biased opinion. After a nice night out at Circus Vargas, my wife and son were both hungry and in the mood for some sushi. We pulled into Sushi 21 out of pure curiosity. As soon as we walked in the door, we were greeted by an unfriendly staff who I assume are the owners or relatives of the owner. I put the attitude aside and decided to sit down anyways. Once we sat down , I was overwhelmed with the out of date, run down interior of this hole in the wall sushi bar filled with people who obviously have no inclination of what real sushi should taste like. Against my better judgement, my family still ordered dinner. I ordered the Oyster appetizer, my wife ordered the sushi/beef teryaki bento box, and my son(5 yrs. old) ordered the crunchy roll. Roughly five minutes after my order was taken by an apathetic waitress, she approached my table only to tell me that there were no more oysters. I responded with a thank you for letting me know and I will not be ordering anything else. When my family's food arrived, the first thing I noticed was the sub-standard quality of the crunchy role which my son had ordered. To hear a five year old tell you that the sushi doesn't look or taste how it should really says something about the quality of food being served. My wife then asked me to try the beef teryaki. As I am half Korean, I recognized the flavor of the meat immediately. It was not teryaki, it was bulgogi( Korean BBQ beef.) This made sense to me as the whole staff is Korean and probably does not care about customer service or falsely presenting the so called Japanese food on the menu. All in all, I rate this restaurant with less than one star. I will never return and I really hope that anyone who blessed this pathetic excuse for a Japanese restaurant with more than 1 star would try Sushiya on Western. read more

The service was the worst part. The so called, "All You Can Eat" was a Bait and Switch, and the Korean speaking waitresses were uncommonly impolite. First, the hostess asked if we really, truly, genuinely wanted to try the All-you-can-eat deal, instead of just ordering from their regular menu. That was a strange question, but we were quite sure (before they asked). Second, they said we would only have one hour to eat. I had never heard of that short of a time limit, but we figured we could manage. Then she reprimanded us that we would be charged for any and every item that we could not finish within the hour. That was fine, as we were not going to eat very much, due to our dietary limitations. The very first round came out slowly in drip after drip. The first round was never completed (even after half an hour). We had to beg the waitresses, argue with them repeatedly to allow us to order a second round, before the hour was up. And the second round came out even slower than the first!! It felt like they made a concerted effort to run out the clock !! Another strange thing was, neither of the two waitresses ever said, "Thank you", the entire time. Even when she presented us with the bill, she did not say, "thank you" or anything to that effect. Koreans we have run into before have always been very polite. These waitresses were outright rude. Needless to say, we shall never go back. read more

I've eaten at this place a few times, and I have had the same experience with the wife. Usually we end up at sushi 21 because it is decent quality for a decent price. However, I have the same complaints about the service. I myself am a server and usually leave a nice if not overly nice tip. Inititally we enjoyed the place. The owners wife had always been a bit unfriendly, but I had two experiences where she was blantanly rude. One of my last incidents with her was unbelievable. We had a bill close to 200, the wife dropped the bill at our table, and after we paid pointed to the check and said "you tip now"". We all looked at eachother like wtf. Tonight , after much deliberation, I returned with some friends who had wanted to eat there. I had nearly the same experience as before. We were 1 of five tables in the restaurant. There were two sushi chefs and two servers (meaning not busy). They dropped us place settings and proceeded to pass us by repeatedly without acknowledging us. After about 10-15 minutes the waitress comes up and just stares waiting for us to say something, and after an awkward pause asked if we were ready to order. We ordered 4 rolls which came out quickly, and by quickly I would like to emphasize that they threw the plates on the table. One waitress threw a plate on top of a dish with soy sauce and spilt everything. Towards the end of the meal, the wife showed up. She hovered around our table and dropped the check . After paying, she continued to hover and blantanly stare at my friend as she signed the tip section. After reading other peoples responses, I am surprised we werent chased out. Tonight was my last night. She is consistently rude and makes you anxious to eat at the restaurant. The rest of the people at my table decided that it was not worth the treatment we received. Her behavior isnt random, it is VERY consistent. So only eat there if you dont mind extremely rude staff. read more

Sushi 21 always has fresh sushi and the main sushi chef is fun and friendly. Sushi 21 has the most exceptional Albacore sushi drenched in a mouth-watering secret sauce. If you want to know about this place read this entire review then you decide if you want to eat there, I for one will never set foot in this place again. So I read the reviews and ordered take out sometimes people are just too picky. The lady who answered spoke little English, I ordered the deluxe Sashimi platters (2) I have to eat only sashimi because I am diabetic, can't eat the rice. I was very clear with my order I. So I show up to pick up and discover it is regular sushi rolls and rice. I told the lady "Sashimi remember", she raises her voice to overpower mine and says "No, you order sushi deluxe platter" I said no, I am sorry but I was very clear I ordered two Sashimi platters. To make a long story short she very upset walks two feet over to the sushi chef, then a third woman joins them. Then all 3 right in front of me start speaking in another language and everyone eyeballs me harshly from head to toe. After a while she turns and says, "okay we fix your mistake". I didn't argue all I wanted was to have dinner with my honey and watch a movie. As they were preparing my new platters, with a bad attitude she brings me the new bill $74.67 for two Sashimi platters. The bill seemed a touch high so I asked to see why. I had ordered some little green onions and some sliced jalapenos, most sushi places just throw those items in but this place charges, whatever so I paid and waited for my new Sashimi platters. When my Sashimi platters arrived I took a second to inspect the platters. They had combined the two platters into what seemed to be one large one, but it looked light. Once before I had ordered take out from this place and the platters then seemed light. So this time I decided to do a full count per piece. The platters according to the menu are 9 different items and you get 3 pieces of each item so each platter should have 27 items. I ordered two platters so I should have 54 items total or somewhere in that neighborhood. Well I counted everything and came up with a total of 38 pieces, I was 16 pieces SHORT! If it's a couple of pieces I wouldn't care but 16 pieces short is a lot. I did the math and the average cost per piece is $1.20 x 16 missing pieces = $19.20 that I was being cheated out of in Sashimi. I called the waitress and without making a big deal said, this is very short we are missing pieces each platter is supposed to come with 27 pieces times two platters = 54 this is way short. She grabbed the open platter and placed it on the counter, the Sushi chef walked over and the third lady once again joined in. Again, but this time much more agitated they all started speaking in their language, arguing with my Sashimi platter open right underneath all 3 of them, I could just see all their germs falling on my food. After arguing a while amongst each other the lady turns and says the chef says the amount is correct, I said "I am sorry but it is in the menu". At this point it was almost comical all 3 of them grabbed a menu and saw what I was talking about then proceeded to argue, again on top of my open platter of food. It was time to stop this, I then raised my voice above theirs and said "excuse me" and they all stopped talking, I said "I don't want it anymore", the lady surprised said why in a harsh tone, I responded, "to begin with you were in such a hurry on the phone that you wrote down the wrong order and the place is empty, then blamed it on me, you rudely constantly change to another language in front of me and you all keep looking at me with disgust, how do you think that makes me your customer feel, you continue to argue on top of what is supposed to be my food, you then try to lie to me and say the amount is correct when it is clearly outlined in the menu and now I have to trust that with all that bad energy you will make things right, NO THANK YOU! I don't trust you anymore please give me back my money. The lady rudely ran my card and gave me a credit receipt, she then said "I don't understand you", I looked at her and said "clearly you don't understand me" and walked out hungry and mad. read more

Waitress is supper rude. No wonder this place is always empty. I came on two separate occasions and the waitress is always unfriendly. Both times my sister and I got the all you can eat sushi. This visit was my worst experience at a restaurant. For the 1st round we ordered 10 salmon so we could get 5 each and they only brought 8 pieces out. I didn't say anything I only ordered 5 more pieces. Then my sister ordered 12 pieces of yellow tail and the lady looked at us and said " you want 12 pieces" ??? With an attitude. We said "yes, is that not included in all you can eat?" She didn't say anything to us and said something in her language to the chef. I have tried many all you can eat sushi restaurants and never experienced this. If they can afford to offer all you can eat, they should stop offering it. But don't treat your costumer so poorly for ordering whatever they want to eat when they are paying for it. To top it off when the bill came I didn't put a tip because I always tip in cash. However, she didn't even give me enough time to take out my cash when she had already started yelling that I needed it to tip. I was like WTF. I Was trying to explain that I was planning to tip cash but she would not stop talking. I got up and left. If I could rate 0 stars I would. The customer service here is horrible, and this would be the very first time I have ever gone out of my way to give a place a bad rating. I work in customer service and let me tell you after the experience my boyfriend and I had the other day here I could not be more disappointed. My boyfriend and I had ordered the T&T Roll and the baked LOBSTER roll. After waiting a lengthy amount of time for our order because they seemed to be preparing a large to go order, our waitress arrives with a T&T Roll and a baked SALMON roll. I told her "I'm sorry we actually had ordered the baked lobster roll" and the waitress gives me a very nasty look and says "No you ordered the baked salmon roll" and continues to argue with me to the point where I said "I know what he said, we didn't order this". So fast forward to when we finally received the correct order and our bill, after having to argue with a person over what my boyfriend had ordered no I DID NOT place a tip. My issue wasn't that she gave us the wrong order, but rather that she decided to argue with both of us rather than apologize. Anyway, so when I wrote "$0.00" in the tip section the manager I'm assuming decided to ask me "You're not going to tip her?" I was so offended by the question I told her no she gave us the wrong order AND sat here and argued with us about it. Then in a different language I heard her screaming and the waitress who was originally helping us and mentioned something about a tip as I was walking out of the restaurant. I not only work in customer service but I am a member of the management team and this behavior is extremely unacceptable. This place has great sushi, don't get me wrong. But I will never be coming back here again and I strongly advise everyone to do the same. read more

Granted, I'm not a novice sushi eater, I actually got really into about 3 years ago so I'm still learning to like more and more different kinds (not a huge fan of the hardcore raw stuff, only a couple ones). However, my boyfriend loves all that stuff and gets the all-you-can-eat for under $30 and he can eat a lot of sushi so he thinks it's totally worth it. This is my favorite place to get sushi. Chicken Teri Roll, Crunchy Roll, Baked Lobster Roll... I have dreams about this stuff. It's not in the best area in town and it doesn't look like the greatest place from outside, but you forget all of that once you start eating. The only thing that bothers me and puts me on edge when I'm in there is having the chef's wife (I'm told) as my waitress. She hovers, is rude, and seems to only want you in and out. If you want to go to a restaurant full of great atmosphere and customer service then DO NOT GO INTO 21 Sushi! there is a waitress there who might be either a manager or owner and she has the worst attitude ever! She has the rest of the employees literally scared to death of asking her anything. i also overheard her yelling at a customer regarding her signature on the receipt that she signed. The customer had to calm her down and tell her that every thing was ok. Shortly after the customer left the same waitress approached the customers that were sitting on the table beside the prior customer and decided to tell them all the problems she was having. She even used profanity and called a customer the B WORD I went into this restaurant wanting to relax and enjoy myself, I ended up coming out of there stressed out and even even feeling bad for the people walking in there. The food was great, that's the ONLY reason i'm giving this place a 2. Good luck to whoever dares enter that place. Was not what I expected to experience in my small vacation. read more
