While walking around and exploring First Thursday, we saw this japanese restaurant. We walked in and it was pretty empty. Looked at the menu and decided to stay and give them a try. The food sounded pretty good and the prices were fair. Ordered the Yosenabe and a Chirashi Bowl, both came with miso soup. The soup arrived first, and it was hot and tasty. The main dishes arrived. The Chirashi bowl was pretty good, but the slices of seafood was small, more like half slices, but was of ok quality. Overall, the Chirashi bowl was tasty and refreshing. The Yosenabe was good, but half of it was cabbage. Good amount of seafood, but lots of cabbage, a bit too much. Overall, the food was good, not the best, but good for the price, and the portions were fair. read more

Stoped in for a bite. The hours seemed odd. Opened at 4pm. Not busy and plenty of parking. Took some time for the food to come out. 6th Street Roll 8 skinny small cut pieces and combination plate. I was still hungry after spending $38. Everything was portioned out extremely small. Interior is dated. One side there's a large fish tank with 3 fishy's and the other side with a few tables. This place is my Cheers. They do not know my name but I have been going to this place for years. It is like when I do not want to drive to LA, or I am tired, and I just want something local that will likely be good, this place is the answer. I remember one time going with my mom to this place, she does not like to drive far otherwise I would take my mom beyond the local I know. That is where she told me that she prepared for her mother's death early on before it happened, so when it did it hurt less. I witness my mom being told that her mom passed, I wonder what would have happened if she had not shielded herself for the moment. I am afraid I am in the stage of life where I need to prepare for the same. Where does the time go? I have a typical order in this place--- cause it is my local place. My usual order is a bowl of miso soup, tempura- shrimp only, a bowl of rice and their six street role which is a treat for the masses. I take the rice and dunk it into the miso. I waited for both items to cool down. Then I slurp and bite. Heaven. Or better said, a minor heaven. Cause if I do go to heaven I want to believe that there is more that awaits me than soup and rice. That is a concept--- maybe there is a version of paradise that awaits all of us, it is just layered but no matter what most will get a version of paradise. I suggest you visit your local library and pick up a copy of NOTES OF A DIRTY OLD MAN; or WOMEN...or a compilation book of his poetry...or maybe listen to a stand up set of his on Spotify... One of his first screenplays titled BARFLY starred Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway...and SENFUKU was probably what kept him alive during these writing stints... Michi, our server, recants the tales of Charles sitting at the end of the bar but wouldn't order the fresh fish sushi ironically and would always get the Cooked Shrimp Sushi and California Rolls...most of the clientele here are locals and we bumped into Pauly; a regular, whom also had a few stories to tell of having shared this place with Mr. Bukowski himself... His fotos of Linda and him are still up pinned up behind the bar ...almost seems like the man never left... Yoshi speaks little but invests his total energy into making the best and freshest Sushi you can ever dream up... the quality of his fish is amazingly fresh and tasty...his wife Helen also helps behind the bar... and shares some more stories of the Angeleno legend... An INCREDIBLE culinary experience and local legend. It has been in San Pedro for 42 years and the sushi chef has also been there for the same amount of time! It is a family-run establishment and that shows through the quality and the service. The sushi was some of the best I've ever had, especially my spicy salmon roll. Senfuku, Part Two. In which, after about a week, we resume our intrepid adventure on our taste buds at this hep condensed sushi bar. Da had again the sashimi salad and tried what I got last time, the yosenabe hot pot. I repeated again the order of dynamite. But had for the first time a chirashi bowl. Eee! :squeals: It had pink sugar dust probably made out of cooked fish and shrimp. And what might be sweet chopped pickled burdock root. And the best taste of nori seaweed which was not dried flecks but seemed steamed. So kelp, then. And the vinegar on the rice did not taste like sake but seemed to have mirin. The rice was like a soft cloud. There was the umami of a perfect mushroom three times the size of the chopped ones from the appetizer. Anago, sea eel. Amaebi, sweet shrimp. Saba, mackerel. Toro, fatty tuna. Tamago, egg. Maguro, tuna. Hirame, halibut. Sake, salmon. These seemed to be the sashimi in the bowl. There were really fresh sprigs of flavorful Japanese parsley. Pickled yellow radish. Pickled freshest spicy ginger. Tobiko, the small size orange stuff of teeny tiny roe, or fish eggs. So that's still basically a sushi staple which is a kind of caviar, right? And a leaf of a flavour flave herb that was not shiso but also Japanese that I was previously unfamiliar with. I loaded up on wasabe in soy sauce. I knew I could handle it, the spice level, although it looked like a green paste wet slurry of the good stuff. It is the best food so it is worth the wait. Although it was really served in three courses. First miso soup. Then salad for him and dynamite for me. Then yosenabe, his, and chirashi, mine, finally arrived. We had snagged the last table indoors at 5 PM. The restaurant is open Monday thru Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM. They are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant was full just like with our previous visit. Slow Food Movement. There were musicians from The Sardine, a local punk scene, eating near us. And then a cute baby girl at the next table in a high chair. I clarify, because my dad said every guy at that other table looked like Woody Harrelson. Also I referred to last week's grilled fish as salmon collar but it was yellowtail collar. And I made my clear noodles of last week (which I believe to be made out of rice and mung bean also) brownish because I added the ponzu sauce for the soft shelled crab and the sauce from the dynamite to my yosenabe broth. We were really excited to eat here as we had a nice meal here prior to the pandemic. We ordered several dishes, however the first dish was a yellowtail sashimi. The yellowtail was inedible and truthfully gritty, sour and disgusting. We ordered salmon sushi as our next dish and it came slimy, pale, wrinkled and parched. We could not bring ourselves to taste, as it just did not look right. We decided we could not eat here and were not trying to be mean. We asked to pay for what was delivered so we could just leave quitely. I don't think I'd be leaving this review had I not received such an unprofessional response from our server. I asked to pay the bill and simply said something came up and we needed to leave and needed to pay the bill. Understandably she was thrown off by the request and the fact that we did not want to take our food to go, she asked if there was a problem. With basically two uneaten plates in front of us there was no way to hide and we confessed that the food simply did not taste or look safe to eat. Instead of simply obliging our request, she became defensive and attempted to assure us the place has been in business for 41 years. We said we understand but could eat this food. She scoffed, said "whatever" and walked away from us. If it weren't for her reaction and poor service, I would not be writing this review. Long story short, if you love sushi and eat it often this is not a place I would recommend. 7-11 and sushi from Ralphs has better quality than this place... if that helps with your dining decision to try Senfuku. read more

A gem of downtown San Pedro, for sure. Senfuku is located on 6th Street, between Nelson and Mesa streets. It looks as though it has been around for a while, and there are definitely local patrons. With the pandemic still going on, there are outdoor seating options (about 4-5 tables), but you should definitely expect to wait as they are open Mondays through Fridays from 4pm to 8pm (COVID hours). They also have takeout options too. I really enjoyed their chirashi bowl; it is quite plentiful in food amount and fish variety, for less than $20. The fish quality is also really good for the price! It is hard to find anything comparable for that price in the area. Additionally, their uni nigiri was also tasty and less than $10 for two pieces whereas other restaurants charge 50% more. The service here has been great as well. They are very keen on cleaning and ensuring you are attended to. read more

Friendly, warm and welcoming staff, and excellent food. Our trip is not complete without finding a real traditional Japanese restaurant. We found this restaurant by going through Yelp, Google and all the reviews. We couldn't believe how great this restaurant is. During our stay in San Pedro, we ate here a few times. We even tried their lunch once but we were here for dinner mostly. It's a block and a half away from the hotel. We had nice conversations with the Chef the owner and his wife, their kid, and grandkid and also their regular customers. The sushi bar is quite big, we loved seating at the sushi bar so Hubby and Chef could converse in Japanese when the Chef wasn't busy. They welcomed us like they have known us for years. This is really a family-friendly restaurant. We still thinking about this restaurant after returning to New York, and can't wait to go back and eat here again soon. Hubby and I tried so many dishes from here including raw and cooked food. I don't usually get fried food but I was bad once when I ordered fried baby octopus and that was so good! As always I must get my sashimi dinner, I loved this plate too! I tried Chirashi twice because I loved the pieces that the Chef added in Chirashi plus they threw in some fish flakes in pink (forgot the name). If you prefer cooked fish, I would recommend you get the Hamachi Kama because they grilled this pretty good. The flavor of the kama was something I wanted more, so I reordered this on the following night. I tried the Unagi bowl and the eel was very delicious although it had a bit of a burnt taste and I liked that taste! Another best dish is called dynamite. It had a slightly flavorful creamy taste. The creamy taste of seafood, yummy! Baked mussels turned out to be not bad either. They also have their own creation called shrimp boat (see photos). I could go on and on with every dish but those were what I thought worth the try. This is a Top Chef restaurant, very traditional and original. We're so glad to have found this restaurant. If I could give less than one star on this review I would. Today on January 14th at approximately 4:40 in the afternoon I came in to the restaurant to enjoy a nice meal. Prior to arriving, I called and was informed that there was no reserved seating, however, when I walked in this very young female server told me the back was reserved, wth! Told me it would be an hour before someone was coming through that I was only going to be there for 30 minutes and she refused to see me. I asked for the owner and she was gracious enough to allow me to have that seat. Not going to walk away and the young girl walk behind her she whispered under her breath to me, "YOU'RE STUPID." At this point I called her back and told her quite loudly that she was way out of line then she had some nerve to call me names. Then she proceeded to argue with me to make a scene and I wasn't going to stand there listening to her verbal Back talk. Mind you the owner was standing there and didn't do too much, she simply asked the server to go to the back. This was disturbing to everyone's restaurant including myself, it was quite upsetting at this point. The server I really didn't have a bad attitude and she ruined my good mood & my appetite. Afterwards I decided I wouldn't even give them the satisfaction of spending my harder money when they clearly don't appreciate their customers. Sure the food is here, but who needs that kind of customer service ruining your meal before even getting a chance to order it. I would suggest another place if you're interested in Sushi. Upon walking in to the place I noticed it was very run down and needed a lot of TLC, and that's putting it nicely. When we finally got our food it was pretty horrible. The sushi was warm and didn't taste right, which makes me think they aren't storing it properly. The wasabi was also very grainy which is interesting. Worst sushi ever! I've had better prepackaged at the grocery. We both thought one of our rolls tasted rotten, sent it back with the server, and they didn't even remove it from our bill. We told 2 different servers something in the roll tasted rotten and they both said it's probably our taste buds. That we just don't like the taste of that roll. Ummmm, NO, we don't like the taste of spoiled food. We had to ask twice for it to be removed from our check. Finally it was subtracted. We had 2 other rolls that were nothing to write home about. Plus it was all on the warmer side, not cold and fresh like sushi should be. I'm really hoping no one gets sick tonight. Service was very slow and we never did receive the 2nd beer we ordered. At least we weren't charged for that. Since we opted for outside dining in this beautiful weather they brought a bar of Irish Spring soap to the table and said it was to keep the flies away. I had never heard of this before, but do admit it worked, although the smell of the soap was very strong. This did not make the sushi very appealing. Senfuku is a great Family owned Restaurant. The Sushi Chef Yoshi is an 80 Year old man who has been doing this almost all of his life so he really knows what he's doing. Please remember that he is 80 years old so please don't expect fast food sushi when coming here. His food is always fresh and delicious so your patience will pay off. You didn't give her a chance to explain that the chef is from Japan so he does things differently than the grocery store sushi that you like so much. First of all, he puts lemon juice on the FRESH salmon to help bring out a beautiful citrus flavor to the fish. Also, lemon is an ACID, and what does an acid-like substance do to a protein? Well, in this case it breaks it down. The acid in lemons chemically denatures the protein in the fish, hence why it looked like that. Also, the chef is 80 years old. It was highly unnecessary for you to be so pushy about needing your food the minute you ordered it. He works very hard everyday to cut and supply customers with fresh and beautiful fish. It's a shame you were not able to actually appreciate the food as it is because of the "I need it now" culture in LA. You didn't even give the restaurant a chance to prove you wrong; you criticized it based on the one item you did consume. I have been eating here for 23 years now, and I can honestly say I don't trust any other place when it comes to raw sushi. LOVE Senfuku! My family and I have been coming here for years. The wait staff knows us, I very rarely have to even tell them my order anymore, and they are super friendly! My favorite dish? Beef sukiyaki. BEST dish, hands down. I have yet to find another Japanese restaurant that can rival the tastiness at Senfuku. Honestly. The sukiyaki dinner comes with miso soup, pickled vegetables (sprinkle some chili pepper on it and some soy sauce), and a bowl of rice. The sukiyaki itself comes in a metal dish that is so hot that the lid must be removed with a oven mitt. Inside is a generous heaping of beef, vegetables, long rice noodles, and broth. Mmmmmmm. *salivates* I don't eat fish, so I can't vouch for the sushi/sashimi, but my friends seem to enjoy it. For dessert? Green tea ice cream = TASTYCAKES. Candy boat dish at the end? YUM. First time trying this spot as we were in the area running some errands and looking for a spot to eat. I really like that Yoshi takes his time preparing the rolls. If you're in a hurry, this may not be ideal but we had all the time in the world and went in when there wasn't a rush so we were practically the only ones in the restaurant. Staff is very friendly and the rolls are pretty good! I do have to say that for lunch, they should have some lunch specials, I compared the prices for lunch and dinner menu outside and it was the exact same menu, that's why I gave this place 4/5 stars. I will not support a business that does this. To add insult to injury, we were celebrating our anniversary which added to the blow. My wife's review below: If I could give this place zero stars I would. We came in and got our orders taken and we waited for our food. In the meantime we got out drinks. A young boy came in right after us and ordered sushi. Ten minutes later (still no food) a group of 3 people came in right after and they were greeted and quickly given a plate of ginger and wasabi each (which we didn't get at all) while they were placing their order. I turned left and to my surprise the young boy also had a plate of wasabi and ginger. I find it very insulting that an establishment would play favorites or even worse discriminate against customers. I don't take this lightly as discrimination is a problem in today's society. The common denominator for these other customers was that they were all white. I don't know what to think of this place other than caution anyone who is of a different color to proceed at your own risk. I ended up paying for my lemonade and leaving. I will not spend my hard earned money on a business that plays favorites or discriminates. For the record, the place was not busy nor were they short staffed. This is an absolutely amazing way to enjoy sushi I didn't think eating it outside would be the same as being in an intimate setting inside Which I hope they reopen soon. I love this place the family that runs it. They take pride in everything they do it is a true gem and definitely deserves your attention. Just don't take my table read more
