Yoshi behind the Bar doing his magic with wife Helen...
    Seb F.

I'm chasing the ghost of Charles Bukowski; our famous Angeleno Beatnick Poet turned Published author and then fell into a series of Hollywood screenwriting jobs while residing in San Pedro with wife Linda... Charles left us over 30 years ago...but didn't leave us hanging... I suggest you visit your local library and pick up a copy of NOTES OF A DIRTY OLD MAN; or WOMEN...or a compilation book of his poetry...or maybe listen to a stand up set of his on Spotify... One of his first screenplays titled BARFLY starred Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway...and SENFUKU was probably what kept him alive during these writing stints... Michi, our server, recants the tales of Charles sitting at the end of the bar but wouldn't order the fresh fish sushi ironically and would always get the Cooked Shrimp Sushi and California Rolls...most of the clientele here are locals and we bumped into Pauly; a regular, whom also had a few stories to tell of having shared this place with Mr. Bukowski himself... His fotos of Linda and him are still up pinned up behind the bar ...almost seems like the man never left... Yoshi speaks little but invests his total energy into making the best and freshest Sushi you can ever dream up... the quality of his fish is amazingly fresh and tasty...his wife Helen also helps behind the bar... and shares some more stories of the Angeleno legend... A figurine of Godzilla sits ominously next to the Fish tank filled with happy fish and some not so happy to see their brethren being consumed voraciously through the thin glass... Watch out Nemo ... you might be next... And Godzilla fans eat for free...here... Just kidding... only Godzilla eats for free... Now you can go home and Netflix and Chill... These fish will keep your "Godzilla" at home nice and strong for hours on end... GODZILLA MINUS ONE is streaming on Netflix but it doesn't have to be that way... so call your late night booty call and get your GODZILLA ACTION FLICK ready... ITS DEFINITELY THE BEST FILM OF 2023... So if you haven't seen it... Make sure to add it to your SENFUKU PLANS...

Senfuku, Part Two. In which, after about a week, we resume our intrepid adventure on our taste buds at this hep condensed sushi bar. Da had again the sashimi salad and tried what I got last time, the yosenabe hot pot. I repeated again the order of dynamite. But had for the first time a chirashi bowl. Eee! :squeals: It had pink sugar dust probably made out of cooked fish and shrimp. And what might be sweet chopped pickled burdock root. And the best taste of nori seaweed which was not dried flecks but seemed steamed. So kelp, then. And the vinegar on the rice did not taste like sake but seemed to have mirin. The rice was like a soft cloud. There was the umami of a perfect mushroom three times the size of the chopped ones from the appetizer. Anago, sea eel. Amaebi, sweet shrimp. Saba, mackerel. Toro, fatty tuna. Tamago, egg. Maguro, tuna. Hirame, halibut. Sake, salmon. These seemed to be the sashimi in the bowl. There were really fresh sprigs of flavorful Japanese parsley. Pickled yellow radish. Pickled freshest spicy ginger. Tobiko, the small size orange stuff of teeny tiny roe, or fish eggs. So that's still basically a sushi staple which is a kind of caviar, right? And a leaf of a flavour flave herb that was not shiso but also Japanese that I was previously unfamiliar with. I loaded up on wasabe in soy sauce. I knew I could handle it, the spice level, although it looked like a green paste wet slurry of the good stuff. It is the best food so it is worth the wait. Although it was really served in three courses. First miso soup. Then salad for him and dynamite for me. Then yosenabe, his, and chirashi, mine, finally arrived. We had snagged the last table indoors at 5 PM. The restaurant is open Monday thru Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM. They are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant was full just like with our previous visit. Slow Food Movement. There were musicians from The Sardine, a local punk scene, eating near us. And then a cute baby girl at the next table in a high chair. I clarify, because my dad said every guy at that other table looked like Woody Harrelson. Also I referred to last week's grilled fish as salmon collar but it was yellowtail collar. And I made my clear noodles of last week (which I believe to be made out of rice and mung bean also) brownish because I added the ponzu sauce for the soft shelled crab and the sauce from the dynamite to my yosenabe broth. Toute suite. Domo arigato. (232)

Was in town for work and craving Asian food, this hit the spot! Total hole in the wall. Staff was very friendly. I got sushi for an app, fresh and well made. Chicken teriyaki was yummy! A great portion side with a lot of flavor. I didn't really care for the fried veggies, just not a lot of flavor on those.

Senfuku, best sushi in downtown San Pedro. Yoshi has been a favorite sushi master serving the locals for decades. Great, fresh food, beers, saki, everything you need for a great sushi night. Inside & outdoor dining in Downtown San Pedro.

We were really excited to eat here as we had a nice meal here prior to the pandemic. We ordered several dishes, however the first dish was a yellowtail sashimi. The yellowtail was inedible and truthfully gritty, sour and disgusting. We ordered salmon sushi as our next dish and it came slimy, pale, wrinkled and parched. We could not bring ourselves to taste, as it just did not look right. We decided we could not eat here and were not trying to be mean. We asked to pay for what was delivered so we could just leave quitely. I don't think I'd be leaving this review had I not received such an unprofessional response from our server. I asked to pay the bill and simply said something came up and we needed to leave and needed to pay the bill. Understandably she was thrown off by the request and the fact that we did not want to take our food to go, she asked if there was a problem. With basically two uneaten plates in front of us there was no way to hide and we confessed that the food simply did not taste or look safe to eat. Instead of simply obliging our request, she became defensive and attempted to assure us the place has been in business for 41 years. We said we understand but could eat this food. She scoffed, said "whatever" and walked away from us. If it weren't for her reaction and poor service, I would not be writing this review. Long story short, if you love sushi and eat it often this is not a place I would recommend. 7-11 and sushi from Ralphs has better quality than this place... if that helps with your dining decision to try Senfuku.

    Chirashi! Very colorful!

We walked in when they first opened and was seated immediately. Ordered the Koi Ramen, no, not made from koi fish, but a pork and chicken bone broth. Also ordered a side of Karaage Chicken, Gyoza, and white rice. The food came pretty quick, piping hot, and freshly prepared. The karaage chicken was a decent sized serving, and was lightly glazed in a garlic soy sauce, very good! The gyoza was good and seemed house made, not the typical previously frozen deal that many places serve, but I could be mistaken. The ramen was really tasty! The broth has like a foamy top and was very flavorful! The chasiu was a nice slice, and a very well made 1/2 ramen egg. The noodles were cooked perfectly. Overall, very pleased with the meal, and the service was quick and pleasant. Highly recommended!

Today I was there with my emotional support animal and so I asked to eat outside like we usually do in the summer (they have in the past provided service outside, they even have tables) The lady couldn't even bother to sit me outside and just told me to order at the counter. I obliged even though I was worried about leaving my pet in distress outside while I order (so I was already anxious) I order quickly just ordering the essentials knowing that I may order extra food as items would come like the fried rice. Instead l left! They don't need my business! I was told that I had to pay now and I said no I don't want take out I want service and eat it here. She said if I wanted to eat outside that I should pay now. The bill was already 34 for ramen, side of kimchi and garlic and a beer. Didn't even order the flavor egg. I have no problem paying but are you serious, this is new. It was rude and disrespectful and not welcoming. So I walked back to my place. Dropped of my pet and drove 10 minutes to Hakata Ramen, far more superior with better service. Mind you today theres farmers market and people looking for yummy food to eat. Truly a wasted opportunity on a patron that pays handsomely for good food. I will never return and never order take out again. In this day in age when businesses are closing everywhere and where most don't go out to eat anymore this was such a stupid move to make on their behalf. If you're in San Pedro just hop on your car and in 4 minutes you're exerting Carson on the 110 and the world is your oyster. Make a left of the exit and another left on Carson and baby you will be in Ramen paradise in the city of Torrance.

Even the other guests were friendly, which honestly made the whole experience feel even more special. We started with the ahi tuna tostada and WOW -- definitely my favorite dish of the night. So fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The scallops were also beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We also tried the garlic bread because so many reviews hyped it up, but honestly... it was just okay. Not bad at all, but probably the one thing I'd skip next time. The biggest surprise for me was the fish and chips because I normally don't even like fish and chips. This version was lightly breaded so you actually got flaky, flavorful fish instead of a mouthful of batter. Perfectly fried and genuinely so good. We also ordered the arugula salad which was fresh and paired well with everything else. Overall, such a great experience from start to finish.
