I was a bit nervous because I did not know if I wanted a full blown omakase, but they were very flexible. I got an 8 piece moment and I told them I loved uni and ikura so three out of eight pieces were different types of uni from hokkaido. What a dream come true. The one thing that blew my socks off was that I told our server I had this sake that tasted like drinking spring water in the mountains. He came back with what I recall it being the one. We definitely took a picture this time since we are not going to be going to places asking for mountain spring water sake. It was a slower night, and we were seated fairly far from the sushi counter -- a bit disappointing for an omakase experience. We ordered the 10-piece course, with five pieces of nigiri served at a time. For a minimalist omakase, it met expectations. The chefs applied the right amount of wasabi to each piece, though soy sauce was left to the table rather than being individually seasoned. Personally, I prefer a bit more creativity and balance in the preparation; touches like citrus zest or salt to better highlight the fish. The fish selection itself was solid, and it was interesting to see wild sockeye salmon and chutoro included in the latter half of the meal. The chutoro was easily the standout piece. They were the midtown one-two punch with great high end food for their respective regions. Sushisay (old name for Japanese and Tse Yang (upscale Chinese). Tse Yang has since closed their doors, but this place under a new name (Sushiann) is still going. I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised how fresh the sushi was. We had a warm greeting from the sushi chefs and great service by the servers. While it wasn't busy, which surprised me, the food soared and it was a pleasure to eat the fresh toro to Santa Barbara uni. Scallops were amazing and the mochi ice cream in the end sealed the deal. Ambience is old school...with the interior the same as it was 20 years ago. The sushi? Fresh, amazing and with great flavor. Wonderful staff, especially Carlos who greeted us warmly and didn't hesitate to accept us when we were turned down by the Lobster Club nearby due to "unacceptable dress code" wearing warm sweatpants in the cold wintry NYC weather (visiting from sunny SoCal). That just set the right mood from the beginning. The 15-piece Omakase selection was excellent and delicious including two types of uni, toro, aji, buri, kinmen, hirame, etc. Two of my favorites, hamachi belly and salmon belly were not included probably bc they were available year round. Happy to see they had my favorite Junmai Dai Ginjo (Dassai) tho! The Somen wrapped shrimp tempura was very original and unbelievable! Really appreciated the warm hospitality from the beginning and the ordering process and being super attentive to customers throughout which is something you see more in Asia than here in the States! read more

Never heard about this place but turned out it's been around for a while. Went there Monday lunch, it's very empty because I showed up at 1.30pm. Service is neat, I don't know how the server hold the ceramic tea cup because I can't even touch it for solid 15 mnts but she can do it flawlessly LOL I have no food allergy and restriction. That's why I wanna do omakase. Bring it on and I will eat it. The scallop is so so sweet, that's how fresh is the fish. The quality of the fish is excellent. Ate here for omakase. Everything was perfect. The selection of fish was more unique and based on seasonality. I am not a huge fan of squid, but this experience made me like squid sushi. Also, our chef was really nice! I forgot his name, but I dropped my uni from the plate to the eating plate because I wanted to take a photo of it, but he was so nice and put it right side up. I will say, people with huge appetites will probably leave hungry, so take that as you will, but personally, I didn't mind the portions. read more

Freshness and quality of the fish is top notch here. This is a traditional Edo sushi and they are expertly made. Don't come here expecting to get a Philadelphia roll or some other non-traditional sushi. Although they have excellent sushi, they are otherwise quite unremarkable, which is why I took off a star. The interior is clean but very plain. Maybe that's the point. You come here for the fish. But at the end of the day, in modern dining, we eat with our eyes as well as our mouth. I think this place is most appropriate for a nice, expensive lunch. Personally, for dinner, especially with clients or a date, I would find some place with better interior. read more

There were only a few tables available outdoor, and the heater wasn't really working so well, but I did appreciate the wait staff trying to adjust it and making sure they did what they could with what they had. I ordered sushi a la carte - getting some of my usual favorites like uni/sea urchin, toro/fatty tuna, king salmon, amberjack, ebi/shrimp and tamago/egg. The sushi quality was decent, but don't expect this to be your 2-michelin stars type of sushi joint - you pay for what you get. Service was prompt and courteous, and the bill ended up to be about $100 before tips (including 10 pieces of sushi and a beer). I would recommend this for a quick sushi fix if you are in the midtown neighborhood. read more

I was so extremely disappointed. The take our sushi I order to my apartment for $20 was better than this $150 omakase. Fish was average, rice was cold. Made reservations for 6:30 pm for dinner but we were running late so I called to move the res for 7 and explained to them that we were trying to make a show. Not only did they move my reservation but they took my order for omikase in advance so they can have it ready for us when we got there. Help! I'm in midtown, on expense account, and sushi yasuda is full. Where to go for lunch? Sushi Ann of course! Sushi is tasty here. Not of yasuda quality but lovely all the same. So why only two stars if sushi Ann is a convenient alternative to yasuda?!? Pretty appalling service. We were here for a business lunch and after 1 hour, while sipping our tea we were told not once but twice that the table was reserved, and we had to leave. Yasuda is strict about this too, but they give you 1 hour and 15! I obviously need to find a sushi backup in midtown and sushi Ann is not the place. If you are in a hurry, I guess you should give sushi Ann a whirl. Otherwise, for the price ($75 a head at lunch ++++ ), there are much better options. read more

We called the restaurant at 11:15 a.m. for a lunch reservation at 12pm on the same day and were told that we must be done by 12:45 p.m. Sushi Deluxe comes with 8 pieces of nigiri, 6 pieces of tuna roll and 2 pieces of california roll. Everything was good, but not outstanding. The only thing that stood out and memorable was the akagai (arc shell clam). The rice tasted a little dry and didn't have enough flavor. While everything was fresh and the presentation was nice, you get the feeling that they reserve the top quality stuff at a higher price point. However, the $28 they charged for what we received isn't a particularly cheap price, and it is certainly possible to find other sushi places in the area that offers better quality for a similar price. We snuck in here Friday at 12:15 for lunch and were able to get a table for 3! What the other reviews have said is true.. Its definitely a business lunch place.. There were people in suits everywhere. The atmosphere was a little bit sterile, but reasonable for a traditional Japanese sushi place. There were 8 sushi chefs on duty at the time, and the place was bustling the whole time we were there. I got the omakase for lunch and it had excellent variety and flavor. The fish was all very fresh and the portion size very reasonable. The rice was on the softer side and had an excellent taste and consistency. The omakase comes with fresh ground wasabi, while most other dishes come with the normal paste wasabi (which of course has a little more kick). This place hit my fix for fresh and high quality sushi during this last trip in New York. My only qualm about the place is that the service is a bit slow. We were seated at a table (which of course isn't the best way to go omakase), and we ended up waiting a good while before the sushi came out.. and when it did come out, it was all out.. Sushi-Ann is a little out of my league in terms of price, but I came here because of a relative's suggestion. So to Sushi-Ann I went for lunch on a busy pre-holiday weekday..... It's a relatively quiet corner of Midtown near Rockefeller Center, so there's not too much going on along this stretch of 51st. The service here is very amiable and helpful, akin to most eatery service in Japan. Unlike a lot of sushi places in San Francisco, it was refreshing to feel a more authentic vibe in the air with Japanese staff and sushi chefs. I was even presented with a nice warm towel before my meal to freshen up; made me feel just a little nostalgic for Japan. I went for the $35 Sushi Lunch Set: a bowl of miso soup, green salad with ginger dressing, assorted sushi pieces/rolls, and ice cream (which comes in three flavors). Although the food was all pretty standard when it comes to Japanese places, the atmosphere and presentation made it all taste that much better. The sushi was fresh and smooth, staying true to the raw slices of fish and not overdoing it with the fusion rolls. Very fresh and tasty sushi. The miso soup has a lot of mushrooms in it, which made it unique. It was light and refreshing, just enough to get our appetites up. Price is definitely on the higher side ($30-40 for an entree) but it's understandable considering its location and the people it's catering to. On a weekday lunchtime, most people were in suits and there seemed to be a lot of business lunches going on. The place got packed pretty fast but it's pretty spacious so it didn't get too loud.
