I have not done omakase before, but I expected more, especially at this price point for a one hour seating. (About 50 minutes in, the chef kept looking at the clock. That was off-putting.) The pieces in general were delicious, but I didn't feel that anything (other than the Triple X) was special or something I couldn't have gotten at a sushi restaurant for less cost. We got 11 different pieces for $125. And I was hoping for an "experience" with some interaction with the chef about the pieces or the preparation. As he put each piece on the plate he announced what it was, but, honestly, after asking him to repeat the identification of the pieces three times and me (and my partner) unable to understand him, we gave up after a few tries. The server filled our water glasses a number of times and offered us green tea (with refills) which was nice and warm on a cold evening. The atmosphere here is pleasant. When we were there, it was 5 couples. Everyone basically kept to themselves. I'm going to try omakase at a couple of other locations at different price points and will modify my review here if a determine that my initial expectation was incorrect. To quote the kids these days, I would say overall that the food and experience were "fine", but I wouldn't say I would recommend a person come here. As I said, perhaps my expectations were (are?) too high, but I don't think so.

Solid omakase spot, but compared to the price and quality, other omakases have been better. This sushi spot is an oldie but a goodie according to others and I have watched videos on the head chef and his process of making sushi. I was inspired by his story so I came here. Don't get me wrong, sushi was great quality for $135 BUT for that price, I would have hoped to see otoro as one of the pieces. Instead, it was an extra add-on. Additionally, I've had a bit better at other omakase at that price range. A minor complaint about the ambiance was probably how small it is in the restaurant. The bathroom is extremely tiny for one person. Space is tight and I understand NYC places don't have the luxury of being bigger. Just letting others know. I'm glad I tried this restaurant, it was great, just not my favorite.

No doubt the best Omakase I've ever had. It's byob and there's a bar next door, make sure you make a reservation since spots are limited, that's all you need to know. Sushi was fresh and delicious, staff so nice and very cozy since it's not a lot of people.

Small, very unassuming omakase spot. Every single piece of fish was so buttery and tasty. Highly recommend this spot. The service was very quick and they were attentive. It is quite small, but BYOB is also a great perk. Bring a nice bottle of sake and you're in for a great dinner :)

Really special restaurant. We enjoyed every bite and it felt perfectly spaced out with each piece of sushi. Super fresh. a fun experience that I've never had before in New York. With a group of max 8 people, you BYOB and get to enjoy some of the freshest sushi.

Man, did I miss this place! Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar was my wife's and my favorite restaurant in summer 2012, when we lived in New York. We would come here every Thursday night, rain or shine. At the time, leaving Los Angeles for New York, we tried to replicate our sushi experience we were getting off of the famous sushi street, Ventura Boulevard and bring it to New York. After trying several restaurants Tanoshi was our hands down favorite (by a lot). Re-visiting Tanoshi tonight with one of my sons was just completely wonderful. Nothing has changed except we all got a little older. And the food was better than ever. Tanoshi is this Japanese master in the art of this cuisine. Every bite of the sushi this man creates is magical. He's so damn good, you won't find a lick of soy sauce or a speck of wasabi in sight because you absolutely don't need it; that's how expert he is in his craft. Tanoshi's Omakase dinners are these great excursions into everything that has to do with the ocean. He is a better guide in this domain than Jacques Cousteau. The one thing I remember the most is you will not leave here hungry. His omakase dinners provide just the right amount of provisions to make you leave with a smile on your face!

This is the 4th omakase spot I've been in nyc, and it's quickly become one of my fave. They specialize in loosely formed rice, and very fresh fish. One nice thing about this place is that it's BYOB. I enjoyed every single piece, but here are my special shout outs: 1. Bluefin tuna- so fatty and melts right in ur mouth 2. Stripe Jack: very very fresh 3. Scallops, bluefin fatty tuna and uni 4. Triple x with quail egg, uni and salmon roe was very unique and not something I've seen elsewhere Overall- a good amount of food for around 135 per person! Definitely highly recommend!

Not my favorite omakase in the city, but the fish quality here is of the utmost freshness and the meal definitely left me quite full. The style of their rice is also quite unique... less sticky and more loose (was not really my preference since I prefer stickier, more vinegar taste to the rice). When you get to your meal, you will either be directed to be seated in tanoshi left or tanoshi right (only the right one has a bathroom), and it's 1 sushi chef to every 4 guests which makes the service really fast. The ambiance overall is more traditional and less upscale. My favorite pieces from the meal were the sable fish, the uni, the scallop with uni, and the yellowtail. I'm also not usually the biggest fan of ebi but the ebi here was not too fishy or grimy at all. Although we were really full at the end, we added on 2 pieces for fun just to try (golden eye snapper and japanese mackerel), which was totally not necessary. In my opinion they serve the best cuts of fish in the regular omakase menu, which is $125pp for 14 courses (including the app and miso soup). They also sang us happy birthday and gave us some cuts of fish (although not as high quality as the omakase pieces) with a candle to celebrate! Very nice gesture of them. Cuts of fish are very fresh, and great service! I do enjoy some other omakase places in the city better though for the price point.

I stumbled on this place while waiting for an appointment near by and I'm so glad I did! I did the lunch omakase which consisted of plenty of fresh fish which truly melted in your mouth. They also had additions to the omakase menu you could order. It is a small intimate setting with attentive staff. I cannot wait to go back!

4.5/5 Came here with my boyfriend on a weekend for dinner. He reserved a table for 7:30 two days before with no problem. All the sushi was extremely fresh and I had the best uni that I've ever had in my entire life there. It was so creamy and not fishy at all. I was never a big fan of tuna but this place really changed my mind! The triplets xxx which has uni, ikura, and quail egg was my favorite sushi in the 13 course. Took 0.5 star out because I was pretty disappointed with the last course, which was a spicy tuna roll. That is not traditional sushi and the mayo covered the taste of the tuna. That was just not what I expected to get when paying that much for a meal. Overall, great experience. Server was very attentive and we enjoyed our dinner a lot. Will definitely come back for a special occasion!

Absolutely amazing. Enjoyed every bite and especially loved the loose rice in body temperature and fresh fish in room temperature. Reservation is a must and if you do the lunch omakase, it's totally worth it to request the dinner version for extra pieces!

Not used to raw egg, but Th mixture of tastes was delicious

Best sushi I have had in NYC. We love the environment, and the chefs are wonderful. Pricey, but worth it for a splurge.

    Becky C.

Fish was very fresh and I enjoyed all of them. The chef introduced each fish but spoke very little English so couldn't engage much in conversation. He was very friendly though. The place is very intimate and small. There is only one bar and I think there was about 10-12 people seated there. It's a no frills restaurant with fresh fish. I don't know if the price justifies the experience as I think you can get the same quality of fish at other spots in the city for cheaper. Still enjoyed it though!

    Excellent sushi absolutely delicious

Ask the Community - Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar

Is it closed ?till Wednesday or just no space?

We are closed until Wednesday, Thank you

What type of glassware do they provide for wine? I know for non-sparkling wine they provided me tumblers without stems. Wondering if there is different stemware for Champagne/sparkling or no? (also can we bring our own glasses?)

I heard it was possible to book for 3 hrs instead of 90 minutes as long as we called. I was told this at the restaurant. But after calling they said they don't do that...I was going to do 2 rounds of omakase anyway...can I get clarification?

Hi, do you have drink menu? ( sake, beer, etc)

BYOB go nuts with the top shelf stuff you can buy from a liquor store ;)

Are there still glass in between each party?

    Yes. Plexi still between seats.

Does the restaurant take pickup/take out order?

For now, we don't have Togo. May be in the future. Thank you

Hi. Is there a way to make a reservation for five?

Yes, just make an additional reservation for the same time and note it is the same party or call if you need help.

Their website has lunch and dinner omakase priced differently. Is there a difference in number of pieces, or is it just because of the time of day?

There is a slight difference. You do get a few more items with dinner. It really depends on the items for each meal. It is fresh and perfect. The quantity is limited. It really depends on what is available and how it is prepared. This is Omakase so… Read more

Do you have outdoor heated dining available for lunch and dinner services?

Hi Jessica, we don't have outdoor dinning for now. We are working on it , hopefully we can make outdoor dinning works soon. Thank you for asking. Stay good.

I want to make a reservation, but the link just directs me to Tanoshi's yelp page (not SeatMe). How can I make another reservation?

Sorry, because of the Covid-19, we are closed for now.

Is this place omakase only? Can I order from menu by myself?

    Yes, Omakasse only.

Does the price of the omakase ($95-$99) include tax & tip? Or are these added afterward? Thank you!

it's added afterward, but if you pay cash, you get a discount

Is liquor allowed with BYOB as well?

B can also stand for bottle, my friend

What drinks would you recommend bringing?

They're super accommodating, you can bring any bottle of sake which goes well with sushi. Or even just any bottle of wine. They have ice buckets, and an assortment of unique glasses for you to choose from. My fav sake would be DASSAI 23 or 39.

    Is Sake served?

BYOB. East River Liquors, 1364 York, one block south, is closest. This is my neighborhood; this tiny liquor store has great selection and knowledgeable, friendly staff. Some nasty Yelp reviews by people ordering online, but I have been going in… Read more

How long is the omakse meal typically?

Their meal times start at 6; 7:30: and 9pm so it's about an hour and change but no more than 1 hour 20 mins because they need to get ready for the next seating.

We walked into a stylish, energetic space with a menu designed around sharing, making it a good option for a casual dinner or group meal. The interior has a contemporary, lively feel with an open kitchen that adds energy to the room, and the seating is arranged to accommodate both small groups and larger parties comfortably. Instead of sticking strictly to traditional Japanese dishes, the menu mixes familiar flavors with more modern presentations, creating a dining experience that feels both approachable and exploratory. The standout item is the katsu, which is where the restaurant really shines. We ordered the pork loin and tenderloin versions and found the breading crisp while the meat stayed tender and juicy, the crust holding up well without becoming greasy. The mazemen is another highlight, with chewy noodles and a rich sauce that brought a lot of flavor without feeling too heavy, the sauce coating each strand evenly and the toppings adding layers of texture and depth. Beyond those, dishes like the butter scallops, corn ribs, and seafood options added variety and made it worth ordering multiple plates to share. The scallops were well seared with a buttery finish, and the corn ribs offered a smoky, slightly charred flavor that paired well with the richer dishes. The desserts are also a memorable part of the meal. The corn ice cream is one of the more unique items, with a sweet and savory flavor that sounds unusual but works surprisingly well, the sweetness of the corn balanced by a subtle savory note that kept it from feeling cloying. It fits the restaurant's overall approach of taking familiar ingredients and presenting them in a more unexpected way, and the creativity of the dessert menu feels consistent with the rest of the meal. Service and atmosphere add to the experience, with attentive staff and a lively dining room that feels suited for groups. The team checked in at the right moments and kept the pacing of the meal comfortable, and the open kitchen added a layer of engagement as we watched the dishes come together. Reservations can be difficult to get, especially during busy times, and the small plate format means the best experience comes from ordering several dishes rather than focusing on one entree. The variety across the menu encourages sharing, and the pacing of the meal works well for a longer, more social dinner. konban delivers a well-executed modern Japanese dining experience. While some of the more hyped dishes may not completely live up to expectations, the katsu, noodles, and seafood dishes make it a worthwhile visit. The combination of creativity, quality ingredients, and a lively atmosphere makes it a destination for exploring different flavors and dishes together rather than just ordering one signature item, offering a meal that feels both engaging and satisfying.

The interior is minimalistic with a japanese feel through the zen garden. For drinks my friend and I had the sayonara which I enjoyed, but she thought was too strong. We ordered family style, sharing the corn ribs, zucchini, butter scallops, ebi tempura, pork katsu, mazemen, ube tiramisu , and corn ice cream amongst four people. The ube tiramisu was free since we wrote a google review for the restaurant. Everything was delicious and the zucchini was surprisingly good as well. The pork was so tender. the ebi tempura were huge, and the mazemen was thankfully not spicy. However, the scallops could've been more tender and we we were all unimpressed with the ube tiramisu. Overall, I would come back and would definitely recommend konban! Get the corn ribs, zucchini, pork katsu, and corn ice cream! My friend did notice that some menu items changed from her previous visit (instead of the zucchini they had the eggplant in the past)

There are many…read morerestaurants with lines that I can't say are worth waiting on, but this restaurant is worth every minute and every ounce of energy left for the wait. I've taken a lot of friends here over the course of 10 years, and without fail, every one of them has walked out mindblown--and why wouldn't they?! The wait times have gotten better over the years (probably because people are waiting for the restaurant next door), but the food and drinks here are still top-notch. Staff is always great, and they all work so efficiently. I am generally a fan of izakayas, but there are very few that offer plates that are designed to be shareable, and this is one of the reasons the food here is so enjoyable in a small group setting. I am obviously biased and think they can do no wrong, but some of my staples that have stood the test of time: Kimchi cream udon, avocado tofu salad, salmon sashimi tacos, and the kani cream croquettes. I was so excited when they opened an outpost in Flushing years ago, but sadly it shuttered during COVID. It is definitely small and there is always going to be a wait, so don't be those people who come in with a huge group during prime time because they like to move (getting customers in and out) very fast.

It can be a little tricky to find as it has a small door on the street level and is located down a flight of stairs on 35th. They have a variety of drinks such as frozen kirin beer and Japanese inspired cocktails. For food, they have a large variety of Japanese classics from sushi, skewers, fried dishes, and noodles/rice. My favorites here are the Omu Soba which has some tasty noodles inside and the salmon don which has some sashimi and sauce over rice!
