6/5 stars - I dined alone on Friday evening after attempting 2 other sushi restaurants for dinner. However when I called Sushi Beauu, there seems to be the last spot just calling my name! I followed that meals with some miso soup and paired it with the first sake that was on the menu. I wish I took a picture of what it was called! I loved it and want to know! Overall, fish really melted in your mouth and especially coming from Seattle where i tend to brag we have amazingly fresh, high quality fish! But Sushi Beauu is up there! It was my kid who first noticed this wonderful, intimate little restaurant at the foot of the Empire State Building as we were hurrying past. We stopped in for takeout rice balls, which were exquisite and delicious. He had the beef, and I had the salmon, both of which were warm and a perfect balance of umami, starch and salt. We've returned for takeout but will have to stop by and sample some of their other menu offerings, which look absolutely fantastic. We dined for dinner on 12/3. Reasonably priced for quality fish but very shitty and hostile service. Id wish we left and ate at Mc Donald's. The service ruined our experience. When asked about "assorted fish", was responded with "if you can read... it says on the menu... assorted fish. That's what you will get" Very rude and condescending on multiple accounts. Clarified by asking what kind of fish and he said "luxurious"... ok .. but what kinds? Also asked for no wasabi due to a severe allergy and he says "I don't think we have that" and proceeds to serve the kaisen bowl with wasabi. When addressed, he hands us a spoon to "figure it out"... ok... We also ordered botan ebi "sashimi" but it was served cooked. When asked about this, server was defensive and said "when have you had it raw" and I responded "100% of the time in both New York and Japan" and he says "well too bad, this is how we do it here. This is not Japan" And we said "Sashimi is raw, it is under the sashimi section on your menu." He then asked if we still wanted it and we agreed to have it removed and to our surprise, he responded "too bad. You ordered it" and left the table. It's comical and hard to believe that these were the exact words spoken. Rude, dismissive, argumentative, and extremely poor hospitality. It didn't help that he was often hovering over our table and eavesdropping on our conversations while our glasses were empty. Weird. Then he would loudly talk about us to the other patrons and chefs for us to hear. It was truly awful and difficult to enjoy. We did not have a good time. A companion and I had omakase here on a recent weekend and we were both very happy. At the beginning of the meal, I requested that the meal include no mackerel and no eel, and the sushi chef honored both requests. At least one of the appetizers would have included mackerel but the chef substituted sea bream. We had the $140 Omakase Seasonal, which comes with 3 appetizers+11 Nigiri +2 rolls + a miso soup + dessert. This is what I remember our meal including. The appetizers were a kind of bun-shaped item that I think had monkfish liver; a custard soup dish; and a miso black cod. The cod was the best of those. The nigiri were: - two different salmon items - tuna - barracuda (which was a substitute for one of the fish I didn't want) - yellowtail - sea bream - salmon roe - uni (a HUGE helping) - scallop - tamago - and I must be forgetting one The rolls were: - a slice of a giant roll that seemed to contain (guessing) salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and avocado - a shrimp tempora wrapped in a seaweed sheet (at least I'm guessing that this counted as a roll, not an appetizer -- either way, it was delicious. The dessert was a cube of brule'd sweet potato. Just ok. There is a $100 omakase option that includes 2 fewer appetizers, one fewer nigiri, and no dessert. With 20-20 hindsight, I think we would have enjoyed that meal just as much, and saved $40 each. The menu includes non-alcoholic Sapporo, something I have never seen before. Turns out, I actually prefer it to regular Sapporo (which is not on the menu here), plus it has something like half the calories. So that was a good find. We enjoyed our meal a lot. There was plenty of food too. I will definitely include this place on my omakase rotation, but next time, I'm going to try the $100 regular omakase. Note: There were very few people in the restaurant when we were there, even though it was a weekend and relatively close to prime dining time. Maybe it was a fluke or maybe the one-star reviews here have driven others away. I saw some December reviews commenting on bad service from a server named Robert. Our sushi chef was a male, but he was relatively freshly in from Japan (where he owns a sushi restaurant of his own in Hiroshima), so I'm pretty sure his name is not Robert. Dined here with friends last week. The food was of decent quality. The service and hospitality was some of the worst I've had and was disturbing, coming from a place marketing itself as a "authentic Japanese" restaurant. Most of my complaints come from the server himself, who was often inattentive, unhelpful, inflexible and borderline hostile at times even when asked the most simple and reasonable of requests. His name was Robert. When asked fairly reasonable questions about certain menu items, such as "do you know what kinds of fish are on the kaisen bowl?" or "how does the deluxe bowl differ from the basic kaisen bowl" ( I think a reasonable question for a $70 rice bowl), he frequently became irritable/inpatient and basically questioned our ability to read the menu. He gave us vague answers, and did not seem knowledgeable about the menu or the types of fish they serve. Despite this, we were very patient and decided to give the $65 deluxe kaisen bowls a try along with other appetizers. When ordering the kaisen dons, we requested no wasabi. The waiter said, "i dont think they serve them with wasabi." When the bowls came, they came with a mound of wasabi in the middle. It was clear our concerns/basic requests were not communicated to the chef/kitchen. When letting the waiter know that there was in our dish, he brushed off our concerns and became visible irritated. He came back with spoons and said " here, you can handle it."..... thanks I guess. The fish and rice was of decent quality. Later on, we were still hungry, we decided to order some ala carte sashimi. One of our favorite sashimi is botan ebi. We had a party of 3. On the menu it is listed as 2 pieces for $20. I asked the waiter if since we had a party of 3, and the ordering was ala carte, could we do 3 pieces for $30. Clearly irritated, he immediately said no, almost as if I asked him the most ridiculous question in the world. I said okay its fine. We will just order 2 orders (4 pieces total, $40). When the botan ebi came, we were surprised to see that the shrimp was cooked. We politely asked the waiter why our order of sashimi was cooked. He immediately became defensive and started questioning us. He first questioned us asking, "how many times in NYC have you had botan ebi raw?" Unprompted, in unison and unanimously, our table said, "everytime" lol. I have probably had botan ebi sashimi in NYC upwards of 20 times. I've always had it raw. Taken aback the waiter said, " well too bad, this isnt japan." He said " do you not want this order," we calmly said, " no this isn't what we ordered or were expecting." The waiter replied " too bad this is what you get." We left it on the table and did not eat it. The waiter clearly lacks insight. Minutes later he comes by to offer us dessert. At this point we were still taken aback and surprised by the unhospitable treatment from our waiter. We received our checks and paid for the bill leaving our cooked botan ebi "sashimi" on the table. Our bill came out to $390 for 3 people. When you pay a premium for food, you expect at least basic service and to be treated politely. If you advertise $10 a piece of "botan ebi sashimi", you best know i am paying for raw high quality seafood, not boiled shrimp. If you as a server in the food industry cannot comprehend that, then you should not be working in this role. Overall, the food was decent, but this was the worst service I've ever had during a dining experience. The server was frequently irritated to simple questions, lacked hospitality and was hostile at times. The management should consider removing him from his role before he loses more business for this relatively new restaurant. Even if the food was the best food in the world, it would not make up for the negative experience we had with the server, Robert. read more
