I'm always in a hunt for a good omakase place for under $100. This place is great, 17-courses for $88 for dinner and lunch is 12-courses for $48. Came here around 6pm for dinner on a Tuesday. The place was not very busy. Staff were nice and welcoming. Clean spot and cozy ambiance. I thought the sushi were fresh, my personal favorites were the king salmon, eel and fatty tuna. I also enjoyed the dessert, not sure what it was called but it was very delicious. I would definitely come back and try the lunch. read more

It's hard to find a better lunch deal. I think it was $48 for 12 courses. That's pretty solid, especially in NYC. Starting with an Uni/Wagyu bowl definitely got me excited for the rest to come. It was an app, but I could have eaten a portion much larger. The fish was fresh and I loved that they included my favorites. Scallop, Otoro, Sea Breem, Amber jack... wow. This is what swayed me to want to come back. The meal closed with an aged miso soup. I found this interesting, since soup is generally a starter. I did not get full from the omakase, but I seldom do. Service was very good and attentive. The inside has a large sushi counter and a few tables, and I walked right in at 12:30pm on a weekday when they opened, expecting I might be the only one. Shortly thereafter, the place started to fill up with patrons. The chef did a great job, since he had to manage serving people in a staggered manner, as those of us who arrived earlier were way ahead in the service. They do accept walk-ins, so you don't need a reservation, per say. I would probably make one if I was going for the dinner service. This was still one of the best spots for omakase in NYC and I will come back to it. read more

Holy hell... this Omakase is brilliant. Good value and amazing quality. Just back from Tokyo and this place is comparable to some of the amazing omakase / sushi there. Really great. Had a very engaged chef.... sat at the counter and had the 18 piece dinner $88 omakase. Just right in terms of feeling full / enjoying a wide range of nigiri. I had an amazing time at Omakase 33. I have had my fair share of omakase in the city and this was right up there. Not only was the quality of the fish top notch, but I really (REALLY) enjoyed their take on flavor combinations. One specific, was a piece with spicy chili crisp on top. It's so nice to have a mix up of traditional dishes with a new flavor profile that works really well on top. I felt that way about every piece they added a twist too, very thoughtfully curated combinations. Dropped by here for their $50 lunch special and man I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed this spot! Each piece of fish was carefully crafted and paired. I also really enjoyed the non-sushi courses like the soup and the amazing!! mini wagyu bowl (I still think about the presentation and taste of this dish). Honestly one of my favorite value omakase lunch specials and will definitely have to come back! Only con was that we came on a hot day and the AC was not on? I live very close to this restaurant and was excited to see an omakase place so close to home. I have been here twice now, once for lunch and once for dinner. I think the lunch omakase is overall a great deal and portioned appropriately. You get appetizers, 8 pieces of nigiri, a hand roll, and miso soup for $48. The fish was all fresh and I liked the level of seasoning. I didn't leave feeling hungry and had good interactions with the sushi chef. The dinner I was less impressed with. For $88 you get a very similar meal but with 5 extra pieces of nigiri. The sushi chef was different this time around. I thought a lot of the pieces were actually under seasoned and the fish was cut very thin. I would give the dinner omakase only 3 stars. Not a bad deal but I've been to better for a similar price (under $100). So overall, a somewhat mixed experience but either way I am glad to see more sushi options in the Kips Bay and Murray Hill area. read more

A pretty modern twist to Omakaze with some unique flavors! I loved the ikura that was soaked with sweet soy and kanpachi with homemade chili crisps! So delicious and amazing. Another one of those Chinese-run omakase places in the city. I like these places for their affordability and convenience - food is usually served more quickly than at traditional omakase places. This place is quite a bit cheaper than other Chinese-run omakase places in my nabe, so I gave it a shot. The seafood ingredients used were mostly okay, but the rice was dry and hard, and tasted like overnight rice. Luckily the rice pieces were small, but honestly they should pay more attention to the rice quality. Service was good and the sushi chef was chatty. They did not try to upsell as we just got the standard omakase set and didn't get any extra nigiri. read more

A newer spot in the Kips Bay area serving up delicious omakase -- the ambiance is really nice and it's definitely a bit more upscale than some of the other omakases I've been to in the city, but worth it IMO. I'd recommend for a date night or for a smaller group. They serve really traditional nigiri, with the only flavors being the fish, soy sauce and wasabi. The nigiri was all very fresh and they have toppings and seasonings that are all house-made. My favorite bite was definitely the Tuna! The sushi chef was an absolute delight -- he was so patient and took the time to explain everything, hands-down the best omakase chef I've ever experienced. Yumyumyumyum. I want to preface by saying that this is my first experience with a sub $100 omakase in the states, so my scale might be a bit off. But the omakase here was really good! Pretty on par with more expensive omakases I've had. When my friends and I arrived for dinner, we were the first party there. The sushi chef immediately started prepping our fish. We started with a smoky rice bowl (bite?). Rice was seasoned well, uni was creamy, beef gave a nice bite. All the nigiri's were delicious! I especially enjoyed the salmon with house made mayo, the hotate, the otoro with caviar, the wagyu, and the unagi. Rice is pre seasoned so there's no need to dip in soy sauce. The proportion of rice to fish was fair. And the amount of wasabi was just enough. Not too overpowering. I loved the house made ginger as well! Overall, my experience here was really good! I am sooooo glad my boyfriend booked this for my birthday (he picked it off my want to go list). The service was excellent! The manager/owner (I am unsure) was very welcoming. He kept referring to us using our names which made the experience more memorable and checked in every once in a while to make sure everything was ok. The food itself was spectacular every course was interesting and different. We would recommend adding the oyster shot!!! Very flavorful!!!! They are part of the Omakase Shihou chain (changed the name to 33 because people kept confusing this location with another restaurant out of the state) which we will definitely try out. Neighborhood spot ive been wanting to try for a while and was happy to get a reservation. Kind of a hidden gem in the area as I didnt realize it was in my neighborhood until recently. The staff was very warm and welcoming and we had a great time chatting with the chef as he prepared each of our courses. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, quiet, and has an elegant but not overstated vibe. Overall the omakase is good, the price for dinner is a little high compared to other similar spots, but it is certainly reasonable. There are very few places (if any) where you can find an omakase for less than $50. From the reviews I was worried the fish wouldn't be omakase quality - but it indeed is and I could book a reservation last minute. The chef is passionate about the dishes and the service is solid. Upon stepping foot into the restaurant, I was severely disappointed. The lighting and the seating arrangements threw me off. The environment as a whole seemed quite bland, while I had seen how picturesque the establishment looked online. What drew me to this place was the price. It seems like such a steal, $48 for about 15 courses. Much to my dismay, the ambiance and the quality of each piece was just a let down. I felt that each piece tasted warm which added to my unsettling feeling. The only positive impression I had with this experience was the chef. Yesterday, with a reservation, I had 12:30 lunch omakase at Omakase 33. With a couple of small glitches, I have to say the sushi was outstanding - best I've ever had. Each piece was flavorful and melted in my mouth. For $48 they serve 2 appetizers, 8 pieces of nigiri, a hand roll and red miso soup. Other than 2 other people who came in and sat at the counter, I was the only customer; but I assume they get busy at night. I started out with a small hot sake ($13). The large hot sake was $28; so I opted against that. Kind of expensive but, I guess, since their sushi is reasonable, they have to make their money somehow. In comparison, I was early; so I stopped by Phoshime a couple doors down the block and had a large hot sake for $7.50. The only 2 glitches were: in one of the mixed appetizers (very tasty) one of the fish was a little difficult to chew. The second glitch was the mini Ikura piece (I've had better), but this was minor in comparison to the delight of the rest of the meal. The red miso soup at the end was delicious and a great final touch. This was exactly the right amount of food to be full, but not stuffed. The service was excellent, and the entire meal took only 40 minutes. This was my 2nd experience having omakase, and it won't be my last. I definitely want to return. Although I recognized some of the fish, other pieces I didn't recognize because, even though the server and the sushi chef briefly explained what they were, I found it very difficult to understand them; so I just wolfed down the food and enjoyed. My first excuse of an omakase experience was at Kissaki on Columbus Avenue (now closed), and it was a disaster. I was so pleased with my 2nd experience at Omakase 33. Although I have eaten sushi for years, I'm new to the omakase scene, and Omakase 33 has definitely convinced me that, whenever affordable, omakase is the way to go. read more

It started off well until the marinated lean tuna came out. Salt on salt. The pieces progressively became worse. Finally, the fatty tuna came out, in pieces.
