Sushi Beluga is quite unassuming, yet one of the best sushi places in all of Long Beach. Their fish is definitely higher quality than the majority of sushi restaurants you'll encounter. I've had a wide range of their sushi rolls and nigiri, and they've all been amazing. Some standouts: Salmon Sample, Aburi Miso Salmon, Toro, Salmon Lemon Roll, and Yuzu Roll. My favorite appetizer is the Agedashi Tofu. The flavors are insane! They also have a "bento box" type of option where you can choose two or three items for a great price. This is a great option for non-sushi eaters and sushi eaters alike because the options include chicken teriyaki, chicken katsu, tempura, and several roll options. Service is usually pretty good. They have some outdoor seating available in front of the restaurant, which is lovely during good weather. A great place for a solo dinner, date, or a friend/family dinner. read more

Was in Long Beach for the night and this restaurant was in walking distance to my hotel. It had good reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. I was the only patron at around 6 pm on a Wednesday night. The server was fantastic; attentive and very friendly, but the food was mediocre. The Edamame was mushy and the Tempura was so so and also mushy. Both seemed overcooked. I ordered a variety of Nigiri Sushi which was adequate but very average at best. Nowhere near the 4.7 starts this place was rated. I will say the Toro Maguro was good but the rest of it was average. read more

Ooof... Had a Saturday afternoon to myself at home so decided to take a walk down to Alamitos Beach to see the ocean. Was craving sushi this day and decided to stop into Sushi Beluga for the first time. Great reviews on the quality of their fish. A bit expensive, but wanted to try what the chef would recommend, hoping that it wasn't too busy, so could strike up a conversation and learn some things. I stopped in about 5 minutes after their posted start time (12:15), and there were already two tables seated at the outdoor patio, so a good sign. The single server was busy servicing one of the tables. So I walked by her, going inside. It was empty inside, except for the sushi chef who was busy working. Asked him, if I could sit at the bar and he said sure: "Anywhere you like". So I sat at the bar spot closest to the wall, not wanting to hog up too much space. All the place settings had been set for each spot, and there were paper take-out pamphlets that doubled as menus, so studied that for a bit. Soon the efficient waitress came back, noticed where I was sitting and promptly brought ice water without a word and left. I kept studying the menu. She came from behind with an 'excuse me', and proceeded to stuff more paper menus into the slot to my left (filling it up), making me move. OK, so I must have sat in a bad spot (no reason to fill up a slot that already had menus, especially when she seemed busy). So I moved one spot over. The waitress had come back from outside passing by, and I let her know I had a question. Without missing a beat, she gave a quick 'Just a minute', and right back into the kitchen. She came out a bit later with drinks for the table outside, right by me without a word. At this point, I addressed the chef right in front of me, to ask him what he recommended (just to see if he spoke). He was straight to the point, saying the king salmon, spanish mackerel, yellowtail, and seabream. So I knew I wasn't going to get any detailed conversation, but told him I've never had seabream before (to be honest, I didn't even know it was a fish). He said it was mild fish, similar to amberjack. So that helped. He then asked/told me "You don't like salmon". Thinking back, maybe he wasn't asking a question, but I took it as an opportunity to discuss, so told him I much prefer tuna, and asked him. He mentioned he had toro and bluefin, so I asked him the market price for the toro, which he knew (too high for me). Then I waited for the waitress. She came back and asked if I had made up my mind, never acknowledging that I had asked a question before. So I placed my order and she left. As she passed again, I said 'Hi' with a raised hand , but she didn't hear it. I was irritated and said loudly, "Hello!' as she went to the kitchen. This time, she came back out. I asked to add a bowl of white rice, and her response was 'You want it, NOW?'. "No, with my food, please". It was clear the chef was just ignoring what was going on. So I stewed and thought about just standing up and leaving (glad I didn't). Instead, I moved myself to a table inside facing a window, so I could at least have something to look out at while waiting. Nobody said anything. Each of them had a job to do, and woe to the customer if not understanding who does what. The waitress was efficient, keeping my water filled, and bringing out each dish immediately as the chef finished, telling me what it was. And I have to admit, the dishes were marvelous. It came in this order. Amberjack Crudo ($22) - loved this. It was 6 pieces of buttery hamachi, dressed in a ponzu sauce, with crunchy flakes on top. Would have loved to know more about this, but as the menu didn't describe, who else would I have asked? Octopus Karaage ($9.99) - so much better for me than takoyaki, mostly tenacle with a light batter, well deep-fried. Really enjoyed it. Bluefin Tuna ($9.99) - didn't look as pretty as others and looked a bit old, but it tasted fine, with no sinew. The two nigiri pieces had a very generous amount. Steam Rice ($2.50) - wish it had come at the beginning, before the crudo. Spanish Mackerel ($10) - two nigiri pieces and it was a revelation. Neatly made and dressed, it still had the distinct flavor of mackerel but was a lot more buttery than any other version I've ever had. Don't think I can go back to the cheaper cuts often served for sushi specials at other places. Seabream ($10) - two nigiri, first time and won't be last. It's a great sushi fish, mild and smooth. Was the one time when the waitress advised, "don't dip in soy sauce, it's already dressed". I kept my interaction minimal at this point, no acknowledgement unless directly asked a question, moving my empty plate to the end when done, and presenting my credit card when I wanted to pay. Sushi Beluga is easily my favorite sushi bar in DTLB. Named after beluga caviar, they carry a variety of fresh fish that you won't find at basic sushi spots. Their shipments usually come in on Wednesdays and Saturdays so you'll get the best pickings on those days. I typically come in on Sunday evenings and have been lucky to get some live amaebi (sweet shrimp), fresh sea bream, halibut with truffle and caviar, yellowtail belly, shima Aji (striped jack) and toro (really fatty tuna). They're also known for their seared Aburi Miso Cod, which melts in your mouth with umami flavors. They also carry uni, giant clam and ankimo but sell out fast. Everything I've tasted has been incredibly fresh and satisfying. From the kitchen, I really like the al dente edamame with added spicy garlic crunch, their take on Agedashi tofu with spicy red radish and fried onion, baked green mussels and seafood tempura. The agedashi tofu and tempura were executed well, crispy and love the added shiso leaf and umeboshi paste to add flavor to the fish tempura. The sushi chef, Kay, and staff are so attentive and nice. Everything came out quickly and empty plates were cleared promptly too. The sushi bar seats about 8 people (my preference) while there are about 6 small tables. Metered street parking can be tough in this area. Kay said the original Manhattan Beach location is better in terms of space and recognition. Still one of my top favorite sushispots. I drive down from Koreatown just to eat here! It's THAT good! Every roll just has their unique flavor and you can taste the quality in each bite~ Today I ordered the Cajun Tuna Aburi Roll. 10/10. I ate that roll so fast! I had to stop myself after the fourth piece to remind myself to slow down, enjoy and savor it! The sauce is almost like a spicy mayo, lighter and flavorful, not too spicy at all. I also ordered the Sauteed Snow Crab Basil Garlic Roll. Personally 10/10, if you love snow crab. The gobo adds a refreshing crunch in each bite. Last but not least, the Aburi Engawa and Aburi Miso Salmon. The engawa today was a little on the tougher side than I remember, but it was still delicious! Might have needed some extra searing to soften it more. Regardless still a 10/10 ! And you guessed it, 10/10 for aburi miso salmon. Sushi Beluga really has THE best miso sauce. No place compares! The service was swift & attentive. The server and chef checked to make sure I was doing alright. If I had more room in my stomach I would have ordered more!! Being raised in the South Bay area only a few miles from here, I have been spoiled with spots like this with fast Japanese cuisine. So that's some context for my review. I came in alone just to treat myself to a chirashi after a hard day of work. They are generous with the size of the sliced fish but for this price point, the bowl had a bit too much empty space. Not enough variety of fish or not enough rice-- not sure. The quality of the rice is mid which changes the taste of the entire bowl. The chef is nice enough, checked in on me. The sushi maker is attentive, more so the problem is they don't have two of the items on the menu we ask for which makes you wonder how many other items they don't have: black cod and Sapporo on tap - Nadda. Sushi Beluga is is a very cozy spot in Downtown Long Beach and one of the best in the area. They really focus first on the quality and freshness of the fish, and the preparation shows it. They have two sushi chefs, Kay and Jeff who are both great and kind. If you have kids be sure to ask for any roll with a "Kids Cut"; which is cut in half width-wise for smaller bites, while maintaining the same ingredient ratios, plus they get more pieces! Kay knows us so well that he will have a California Roll with Soy Paper kids cut for my son right after we walk in. My favorite item is the live scallop which is usually only available on weekends. An order comes with both a scallop sashimi and a dynamite (mayo sauce) style. They have a large selection of different tempuras that you can order two pieces at a time and are made fresh to order. The tempura batter is light, delicate, and always crispy, and the tempura sauce is a flavorful clear broth that's served hot, something I've never seen anywhere else. They also have a rotating daily selection which features their freshest catches of the day like Sea Bream, Uni, and other higher end stuff. They also have many appetizers and the usual cooked items like teriyaki chicken and steak. I would recommend this place to anyone who really appreciates fresh fish that's artfully prepared. I was suprised that this sushi place was right next to the new condos on the corner of Ocean and Alamitos. I am glad I found it. You will need to find street parking, mostly off Ocean. They have nice vibrant decor inside and is very clean place. I do feel a Japanese atmosphere in here, and I always like to be transported somewhere during my meals. The waiters greet you promptly and you can pick where you want to sit. They have an extensive menu. The have different kinds of tempura like shrimp, vegetables, and my favorite is white fish with basil tempura. the white fish is a very delicate flavor, and I never had it before until this place. They also have miso soups. The sushi is diverse and there is something there to satisfy your cravings. Always with a side of wasabi and pickled ginger. The platings are always well decorated with sauces. They also serve Sapporo and hot sake which I love to have with my sushi. I usually ask for waters and they bring with ice and a smile. The prices are really good for the excellent quality of food. The service is great. The sushi and the environment really makes me happy when I visit. Sushi Beluga's produce quality and sushi cuts are what one would expect when eating in Japan. You get nigiri tuna, salmon, white fish, albacore, aburi salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, Uni, spicy tuna, salmon roe, rainbow roll, and SPA roll. It's a great deal--turned out to be a lot of food. Visited on a weeknight, the restaurant is small and intimate. Parking was difficult, we circled the area numerous times before we found one and walked over. There was only 1 waitstaff on the floor but she was attentive and took our order pretty quickly. There are a variety of sushi selections and appetizers. I was most excited for their aburi sushis. For starters we got the gyozas and crispy rice w/ spicy tuna. The gyozas were tasty but tiny and the crispy rice tasted overcooked. We really enjoyed the mixed crudo and thought they were pretty generous with the cuts of fish. We ordered #703 platter to try all 3 of their aburi selections, but I think we could probably have ordered 1 aburi yellowtail and 1 miso salmon so we can try other sushi. I thought the honey miso glaze was a perfect pairing to the smoky taste. The aburi toro and negi toro hand roll were both excellent. Today I tried the live scallop for the first time and definitely will be an always from now on. They only have 2 every week, I'd recommend calling and reserving one if you want to make sure you'll have one prior to coming. Live scallop was the best thing I've ever had. The raw scallop melted in my mouth and the baked scallops were just divine. So sweet so fresh literally the best. The crispy rice with tuna is always a must, cucumber boat amazing, yellowtail carpaccio out of the world, the toro jalapeno also so fresh and good! Came here on a Saturday night around 8PM - parking was hard to find but we were seated right away which was nice. This place opened recently and I've had my eye on it. The inside was cute and welcoming! We started with the crispy rice and salmon which has avocado and jalapeño on it. It was pretty good but I was expecting the salmon to be finely chopped up like spicy tuna. I wish the crispy rice was a bit crispier/crunchier. We got the #703 which comes with aburi salmon, aburi yellowtail & miso salmon. They were all really tasty! I'd definitely come back for this dish. We also got tempura zucchini which came out super hot & crispy! The waitress was really nice & I appreciated her customer service. If you've ever had to wait to be seated at Playa, you may want to make a trip further south. Make a day out of it. I think it's worth it. Service is attentive and kind. Ambiance is what you would expect at the ground floor of a high rise. Parking is a little difficult, but not any more than Playa. For me it's all about the fish. First of all, tried 2 others previously and the wait was over 40 minutes. Walked right into Sushi Beluga and sat and were served right away. Nova was our wonderful server, super sweet and helpful. Great service! We had rainbow roll, albacore and yellowtail crudo (a delicious first) and the salmon lemon roll (another delicious first). The crudos are simply fish with a delightful crispy heart of palm, yet kinda citrus-y sauce.The salmon lemon roll was one of a kind, fresh and the perfect amount of lemon! Hidden sushi gem near the Fairmont Breakers -- please don't let this place disappear. I still can't believe more people aren't talking about this spot, it's easily one of the best sushi experiences in Long Beach. Where are the food influencers at? Every time we go, it's consistently amazing. Our must-orders are the Spanish mackerel, miso aburi salmon, salmon belly, and the baked mussels. The salmon aburi melts in your mouth -- so savory, so warm, so buttery. The Spanish mackerel is zesty and tangy with yuzu, bright and full of flavor. I have a bunch of food allergies, and Sushi Beluga has been a consistent and wonderful place that I know I can trust. Not only are they trustworthy- but the sushi is superb! The fish is always extremely fresh and the ratios of fish to rice are perfect. Whether eating in or picking up, the staff is always so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is clean and welcoming, the bathrooms are clean, and there are outdoor tables if you prefer to be in the sunshine. The location is also ideal! As it is walking distance to the beach, it has been a breeze to pick up sushi and take it down to the beach! I must also say just how easy, user-friendly, and fantastic their online ordering system is.
