We also shared the tiger roll (i think) and the Mr Roll and the Mr roll was definitely our favorite. Everything here was so great & the fish tasted fresh. If you come in a party of 1-2, I would recommend sitting at the bar because the chefs working are so nice & charismatic. I think this is a place I'll have to try again bc it seems I came on an off day for them. Food was good. I ordered one of their lunch specials. However I was still hungry after so, the special wasn't as filling as I'd expected. I did order their Las Vegas roll too and that was very tasty. Service could have been better. One thing about me is I take a simple acknowledgment seriously. So when the waitress placed a menu with me while simultaneously talking to another patron as the patron was leaving and didn't even acknowledge me I take as a lack of simple courtesy. So not off to a good start. Then, after I ordered and my special was given to me, the waitress didn't check on me for 15 to 20 minutes. My empty salad bowl and soup bowl sat on my table, water was empty needing to be refilled, I wanted to order another roll but at that point was under a time crunch. It was a frustrating situation. My waitress did apologize and seemed sincere. Apparently there was a problem with the shipping the restaurant received that day and she was on the phone with their supplier which pulled her away. I decided on the 3 hand roll lunch special. Soup and salad came out first. I liked the soup but wasn't a fan of the dressing on the salad. Hand rolls came out: Rock & Roll roll- baked scallops with avocado and rice ... very dry no sauce on the scallops or in the roll. Geisha roll- snow crab with avocado and rice. Uh...Most of the time during my visit, staffs were hiding in the kitchen or something. Place wasn't big and it wasn't busy at all. That was the downfall... It was tiring to try and tag someone down for every single thing. Shouldn't someone come by to check on patrons? lol I dunno wassup with this place... This spot is 4.5 in my eyes, but because they are close by and because everyone was so nice there, I upped it to a 5 star. I tried the Nemo roll, the spicy scallops sushi, and the three amigos handroll. My favorite was the handroll. The fish tasted so fresh! I would definitely come back for more handrolls! The scallop sushi was also solid, a little too mayo forward for my liking, but still solid. It was hard to eat with the scallops falling out though! The Nemo roll was great! I like that they offer 1/2 roll samplers because often times I dine solo and I want to try several options but can't eat that many rolls. I got the Red Yellow Green sampler. It has three 1/2 rolls sexy girl,911 and sunrise. All of them were so delicious! The vibe in her is quant and the music is always great in my own opinion. Honestly, I'm not sure if I was really just starving and it's been a while since I've had sushi so I was excited... But I think this was the best sushi I have ever had. We sat at the bar this time around and were attended by Jay and behind the counter making our sushi was John (I couldn't clearly hear his name but I believe that was his name.) He was very friendly and even offered me a piece of salmon belly sashimi so I could taste the difference between that and the regular salmon sashimi. It really does melt in your mouth! We ordered the Ashley roll, orange roll, Sake Maki, Tonkatsu Ramen, salmon, skin hand, roll, and salmon bowl. Everything came out pretty quickly and it was very good. Most sushi spots in the area shut down around 9, maybe 10 if you're lucky, and 39° holding it down until 12 am is really the main reason I keep coming back. When that sushi craving hits at 11 pm, this is the place that actually makes sense. Do they have the best sushi in the world. No. Is it good. Yes. Is it bad. No. It's right in that middle lane. I grabbed a sunrise roll to go and that one always hits for me. Definitely one of their better specialty rolls compared to some of the others on the menu. I kept it simple with two cut rolls, one spicy salmon and one tekka maki. Both were solid, nothing mind blowing, but fresh and exactly what I needed to fix that late night craving. Service is good when I do decide to sit down there they get the food out in a reasonable time, especially for late night. Overall 39° is a solid 3 star spot for me. I wouldn't send someone here looking for the best sushi in Long Beach, but if it's after 10 pm and you want solid sushi that gets the job done this is where I'm going. read more

We visited 39 Degrees with high expectations, given how packed the restaurant was. Clearly, it's a popular spot. However, our experience didn't quite match the hype. Right off the bat, the presence of several homeless people right outside the entrance made the arrival a bit uncomfortable. Not something the restaurant can fully control, but it does affect the first impression. As for the food -- while the sushi looked beautifully presented, the taste was underwhelming. We ordered the sashimi sampler, a variety of sushis, and tried their sampler rolls. Surprisingly, the sushis were better than the sashimi sampler, but still just average. The rolls were okay, but nothing memorable. On the positive side, the service was friendly and attentive, which we appreciated. But unfortunately, good service alone can't salvage a sushi experience if the food doesn't meet expectations. With so many great sushi options around, I don't think we'll be returning. One of my favorite sushi restaurants in all of all LA county. I actually found this spot waiting for a band to play. It's very quaint with not too much seating so it can get packed quickly. But luckily it was slow when I got there and the sushi chef at the bar greeted me and was very kind and helpful. He recommended the 1/2 roll red, green and yellow sampler.
