I have never been to a restaurant so many times without getting tired of it. I've been eating at Kimu for years and I can confirm this is the best sushi restaurant in town by a landslide. The sashimi pieces are big, cold, and always fresh. I always order spicy edamame, gyoza, salmon sashimi, yellowtail sashimi, and miso soup. It's so delicious I crave it on a weekly basis. Come here! This spot seemed to have a parking lot however when we got there, it was packed. I don't know if it was because of the weekend of the Grand Prix or whatever the situation may be we had to find parking on the street two blocks down. We sat at the bar and the sushi, chefs and server were nice. We ordered their spicy edamame which was loaded with flavor by far the best spicy edamame. I love the garlic and chili combos with a little citrus flavor. Also ordered the stinky roll, which is spicy tuna on the inside and salmon on the outside which I liked very much couldn't decide on a second roll so I asked the server to surprise us and kind of regret doing that because he had brought us a roll that I was already cringing at reading the description on the menu which was their long beach roll however, the crunch it had on the inside was very nice and not too heavy. I don't feel that asparagus should be anywhere near a sushi roll, but that was my bad. Also ordered their Yuzu cheesecake, which was a no for me. It was too strong and screaming Yuzu simialr to lemon zest and super tiny. The quality of the ingredients they use here are pretty good. The food was genuinely good, but unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the experience. Our server (a female staff member) had a very poor attitude throughout the meal. Every time we asked for something, she seemed annoyed and uninterested, as if helping us was a burden. Dining out isn't just about the food--it's also about how you're treated--and this experience fell short in that regard. What made the situation more uncomfortable was noticing a clear difference in how she treated other guests. When two young white gentlemen were seated nearby, her demeanor noticeably changed--she was more attentive, patient, and friendly with them. While I don't want to jump to conclusions, the contrast was hard to ignore. After reading another 1-star review describing a similar experience, it seems this may not be an isolated issue. No customer should feel like their presence is an inconvenience. It's disappointing because the food really was good, and this could have been a great dining experience. However, service matters just as much. If gratuity hadn't already been included, I would have honestly suggested that the "tip" should be to improve the attitude and level of service. My friend and I were craving dressed up oysters and this place looked promising. We were mostly there for the oysters, but the sushi totally blew us away, too! It was a pretty traditional looking restaurant with tables and a sushi bar. We opted with the sushi bar and it was super nice that the sushi chef just presented his food directly to us. He was so nice and it was fun to see how proud he was of his work. I got some nigiri a la carte: hamachi toro, chu-toro, sea bream, and jumbo scallops. They were all huge and super fresh! The chu-toro practically melted in my mouth so I can't even imagine how amazing their o-toro would be. The scallops were apparently directly from Japan and were also incredible. We also got a dozen oysters and they were so good we ended up ordering another dozen. They were fat and juicy and a bit creamy with the perfect ratio of brine and sauce. The lollipop roll was meh and hard to maintain its integrity. The sunshine roll was really good along with the rainbow roll. The sensual pleasure roll with scallop was decent. Hubby & I were craving sushi & randomly found this place on Yelp. We came here for lunch couple of weekends ago. I was surprised how slow the business was for a Saturday. Ambiance was on the smaller side & isn't anything fancy but it was clean & cozy. There was only 1 server. She wasn't the friendliest but did her job well. She was attentive & did come by to check on us. As for the food, the menu is extensive with many different variety of nigiri, sushi rolls, sashimi plates, appetizers, À la carte, etc to choose from. Wonderful date vibe! We came here as a party of two on a Friday night and were seated with menus right away. The menu is easy to follow and has a lot of the classic appetizers, hand rolls, nigiri options, and special rolls! Here, the prices are fair! We ordered the fatty tuna nigiri, Long Beach roll, sunshine roll, and spicy tuna crunch roll. The food all came out quickly and beautifully presented. Parking is also very limited! Make sure you're in the correct designated spaces since the lot is shared with another restaurant - Roscoe's House of Chicken & Waffles. (I got a warning as I had made this mistake.) That said, the food absolutely made everything worth it. The décor is cozy with dim lighting, and the presentation was such a fun surprise. Our rolls were brought out on fire, which made for an incredible photo moment. The flame went out quickly, so it didn't feel unsafe at all, just super cool. Flavor-wise, everything was amazing. The rolls were warm, creamy, and so satisfying. My spider roll had virtually of no spider crab in it whatsoever. It was 80% fake crab. I'm used to a spider rill having a whole crab in there. Not a skinny leg hidden behind a scoop of fake crab. In my experience, a five star sushi restaurant makes this name by the artistic creation of balanced flavors that create an explosion of complexity in your mouth There's nothing complex whatsoever and any mouthful that I had. All the rolls were served in front of my face so I had a Service waitstaff armpit in my face every five minutes while I ate. How distasteful. Seriously. Classless. The house salad lacked the earthy flavors of most sushi restaurants. I feel like i dined at a completely different sushi spot than my first visit here. We made reservations for noon, right when they opened to avoid the wait. During our previous visit, it was packed. From the lunch menu we all chose a specialty roll (Soft Shell Crab) and for the side we chose Spicy Tuna Roll. From the regular menu, we ordered the Lobster Bake Roll, and the Dragon Roll. The server brought out a Scallop Roll instead of the Lobster Roll that we ordered and admitted she had entered it incorrectly. She asked if we wanted that instead and of course we didn't. So, she took it away and waited for the correct roll to be made. Sadly the salads with the lunch menu specials arrived when we were pretty much done eating. The roll were just ok. The restaurant has a really nice ambience, it gives a dark modern Japanese vibe and there's cherry blossoms decorating the dining area amongst the walls. Service was good, the waiter was friendly. The soft shell hand roll is served in a glass cup which was good at the beginning but it became quite salty at the end of the handroll because the sauce accumulated at the bottom. The dinner sashimi and sushi combo had great pieces of yellowtail. Some of the pieces of the sushi combo were misses (it's chef's choice) but I think getting the combo is still worth the bang for your buck because it was shared it between two people. You get a complementary dessert when you write a Yelp review. My table and I got the yuzu and matcha cheesecake which was phenomenal. Something in their secret sauce instead of a clump of mayonnaise.... I'm a sashimi lover and the yellowtail was soo yummy- fresh, sliced perfectly and then presented so beautifully! The staff worked so efficiently as they handled a busy evening crowd. Beautiful setting in restaurant area but I always sit at the Sushi bar so I can watch all of their creations. Love this place! I think the coolest thing about this place is how it is a little oasis from the kind of rough area. It's pretty small but they have a yelp waitlist so use that! Service is attentive and everyone is so sweet. The sashimi dinners are great but not a good of a deal as their rolls. I loved every single roll that I've had here!
