Have been here so many times over the past 17 years that I been working in the area. The old sweet couple still owns this place and I love it! I still love their udon bowls and I love that for the Katsudon, I can change the rice to udon instead. I had a variety of dishes here, from ramen, to rice bowls, to soup and dry udon, all were very satisfying. They also have a stamp card system and I am all for it!! read more

This was a pleasant find. We were craving Japanese food in the area, and this place did a great job with their curry and katsu. The price is also reasonable. I got the Pork Cutlet Curry. The cutlet came out nice and crispy. I do wish there was more curry sauce in the dish. Their karaage was also pretty good. The place isn't too big, but they have few outdoor seating too. I would be down to come back again. It did take some time to get the food out but wasn't too long of a wait. We did street parking. read more

I LOVED my food here. It's a tiny place to tucked off Pine Ave so it's easy to miss but you shouldn't. There's a cute older lady there that was behind the counter she didn't rush me and was very kind. I got the katsu curry udon noodles and let me telllll you. Whoa. It traveled well, by time I started to eat it 20 min after I picked it up the chicken was still crispy, the noodles tasted delicious and the curry was excellent. I'd def go back!!! read more

I came for a quick lunch and got the spicy chicken. This is my second time coming. The food was awesome and so flavorful. I ordered the same food last time and the quality is the same. It's the perfect amount of spice with tons of delicious flavor. I would definitely be back and recommend it to anyone looking for good food with flavor. Small and tucked away, but definitely worth finding! We were greeted by a friendly woman who immediately knew it was our first time. She said "I know everyone, and I've never seen you!" And she gave some recommendations. I had the katsu curry udon. I forgot what my husband had, but he loved it! Haha! My meal was VERY hearty and filling and perfect on a cold evening. Great flavor, the katsu stayed crispy in the sauce, and the flavor was perfect. Generous portion, which I can't believe I finished, but I went in STARVING! The place is small/cozy but had some outdoor seating which would have been great on a warmer day. Highly recommend! read more

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised when I traipsed down Pine Avenue and popped into Donburi Cafe. The location is somewhat strange being kind of a 'dead end' in an older mall setup on Pine. I had dined at a neighboring restaurant that unfortunately closed so I popped into Donburi. Only one person was seated outside at the time; upon questioning him - he said it was good. The place is amazingly clean and organized. Without a ton of staff, they obviously want diners to take on some responsibility for bussing their trays back to the main counter and NOT being wasteful with utensils, napkins, etc. I like that. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Don albeit I'm not a huge chicken fan but it was getting close to my bedtime. First, the portion seemed quite generous so I took some home albeit I could have finished it off. Second, the miso soup was really delicious. I forgot how good it could be. Third, finally, the chicken don was quite good although I think more Korean than Japanese, which is fine. I like both and I appreciated the white rice. By the time I left, several other folks had popped in and a few takeout orders had gone out the door. I wouldn't mind if they offered a mini portion for about $10 for less hungry times. Stumbled upon this small restaurant while exploring LA. The smell was enticing when we entered. The worker was very sweet. She made sure all the customer were happy. The food was wonderful. The most crispiest katsu I ever had. The udon curry was delicious and piping hot even though we were dining outside. It was a magical experience. read more

This is the best curry I've had! So balanced and full flavored. I got the crispy shrimp and that delivered too! Big portion sizes, can't wait to eat the rest later. A cute little spot with some reliable, not too fancy food and very friendly staff. The food is nothing mind blowing, but it is tasty and hearty. The woman behind the counter kindly let me sample some of their house sake after I purchased some bottles from their fridge (get the house one, it is cheaper and tastes far better). We walked over from the Renaissance Hotel for dinner. The reviews were rather favorable so worth a try. Even smaller than I had imagined, with apparently all of their outside tables stacked indoors for some reason. Not very inviting for indoor dining but we didn't want to haul our orders to go back to the hotel. So we settled in at one of maybe only 4 indoor tables. Our orders were for me, the Curry Karaage Chicken Don(bowl). And for her the Teriyaki Chicken Don. Not the greatest ambiance but we had no real complaints with the food. Downright delicious. Very noisy outside though, situated right below a nearby apartment complex. With a large group of kids coming inside badly in need of a bathroom, which this restaurant does not have. This place was such a hidden gem! As soon as we walked in, the sweetest older woman (who I later realized was the only one cooking!) gave us a big wave and the warmest smile. The Japanese curry was so good--super comforting, flavorful, and honestly tasted like something made with a lot of love. You can tell everything is made fresh and with care. Disappointing visit this time. Katsu Curry Don ($14.50): Very crispy pork katsu with fresh, delicious medium grain rice. Katsu Don ($14.5): This was a miss. One really realizes that missing the Japanese brown curry, the taste of the katsu isn't great. This one had a thick breading, causing the inside to be a bit gummy. It was supposed to have an egg on top, but instead it was put on top raw. The dish wasn't hot enough to cook it at all, so basically raw egg on top of rice. read more

I love this place when I'm craving some katsu curry. Their katsu is super crispy and their curry is flavorful without leaving a weird texture on your tongue like some curries do! It also comes with miso soup which always hits the spot! I also ordered an order of shrimp tempura. It comes with only three pieces so I wish it came with more but they're decently sized. The place is small but with tons of tables to sit inside or outside if it's a nice day! Their service is okay, pretty standard for an authentic Asian place iykyk but otherwise fine! read more

Talk about Japanese comfort food! I was immediately transported to a state of relaxation with each bite! There is something that immediately puts you at ease with a good curry udon- and this place did not disappoint. Food: the taste was great. I loved the flavor of the katsu. As I sat eating my food, several people came in to order takeout. Service: the ladies were very friendly and my order came out very quick and everything was nice and hot. I decided to eat in since there weren't a lot of people yet. There were multiple signs that read, "please bus your own table" with arrows. Kind of a strange concept since they still need to carry everything in off the counter. Idk...maybe I participate wrong. Parking: as many people mentioned, there is a parking garage off of 3rd and Pine. There a several one way streets (3rd being one of them) and I had to enter on the next street. Dropped by for a early lunch at about 11:45 on a Monday. I just flew in from sf and was in the something hearty with eggs and this for the bill. It's more of a Japanese style joint where you order first but pick up at the counter and bus your own table. I got the shrimp ebi don, Basically tempura shrimp with egg over rice. It def hit the spot. Eggs were slightly runny and dashi sauce soaked rice reward at the bottom. I'm going to go as far as saying it's as good as places in Japan! Well done Donburi Cafe! read more

Stumbled upon this place, tucked away in downtown LB. I was looking for some ramen and there was a sign out by the sidewalk with pictures of ramen and other food items. It caught my eye and I decided to check it out. It was empty inside and out so I was unsure if it was open. But upon entering, we were greeted by a nice woman who took our order. I think she was the owner because she gave us a "first time" discount when we paid. The food was ready in a timely manner and placed on the counter for pick up. You take your food on a tray back to your table. I actually liked busing my own table (they have a sign that says please bus your own table). There was music playing and the ambiance was calm and encouraged us to take our time enjoying the meal. I ordered ramen and had asked for spicy but ended up being okay with being served mild broth. The flavors were delicious. The gyoza was filling as an appetizer but were served very hot and stayed warm while I enjoyed the other parts of my meal. The beef bulgogi was very filling and tasty. Coupled well with a Saparro drink. Enjoyed our meal and the experience in the restaurant, even though we were the only patrons. Definitely worth exploring outside of my normal downtown eateries, so glad I found Donburi! read more

A hidden Japanese spot in downtown Long Beach! Enjoy your rice bowl of choosing with their outside patio seating. There is minimal seating, but it does the job. Before I jump into the food, which I did enjoy, their customer service was very poor. The front register gal was very rude to my friend and I when taking our order. She wasn't very enthusiastic and gave us an attitude because my friend wanted to modify one of their dishes. I did order one of their most popular dishes, the Katsu Curry Don! The interior is small, but plenty of small tables for a lunch meal, as well as counter seating. Order at the counter and food is cooked to order, so it can take a little while. When I went a few weeks ago there were maybe 3-4 tables eating lunch. Enjoyable Katsu curry don. Thick pork cutlet with somewhat heavy but crispy breading. It's not subtle or thin. Curry had a nice warmth without being spicy. Wonderful comfort food, which I enjoyed over 2 meals. The place feels very specific for certain items (like Katsu curry don), so it would be interesting to try some other items. read more

This is a prime example of a great local business that is not pretentious and focused on their customers' experience. We each ordered a bowl of udon (one with broth and one with Japanese curry) and the food is simply phenomenal. None of that premade stuff from US foods or Sysco, just great ingredients made with care and love. There's also outside tables if you enjoy outside dining which adds to the chill vibe. Worth a stop if you're looking for a simple meal that won't break the bank in downtown Long Beach. Bon appetite! read more

Quick curry Was in Long Beach for a work trip and have a spot to grab lunch before my flight. Was a little chilly and was in the mood for Japanese comfort food. Found Donburi Cafe on Yelp and a colleague and I walked on over. Kind of a shokudo-chain restaurant hybrid vibe in the touristy and downtown business area of Long Beach. Menu has most of the donburi standards. I had the Fried Chicken Curry Don since that's one I haven't seen before. Friend had a tempura option. Both hit the spot and the lady who took our order checked on us twice while we waited and then ate. Averaged $18 a person and was super quick. A good option for your list of Japanese food options if you're in the LB area. read more

The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. Shout out to Jakob for being the sweetest and most helpful server. Amazing service! We knew what we wanted - brussel sprouts, cheese curds (squeakers) with marinara and a double pepperoni & mushroom pizza with ranch and hot honey on the side. Brussels were solid. Lots of fresh grated parm on them. Squeakers (cheese curds) were crispy and yummy. The star - the marinara!!! Perfect flavor - sweet and savory at the same time. Delicious! Then the pièce de résistance - the pizza. Delicious crust, crispy pepperoni and real earthy mushrooms. What took this pizza to the next level? Their house made ranch and their hot honey to dip it in! Bomb! How has this place only been open 100 days? Found it on TikTok and it did not disappoint! Extra star for impeccable music selection and beautiful minimalist pizza parlor decor. Gorgeous wood everywhere!
