Incredibly disappointing. My usual sushi place is closed on Tuesdays. This place was close to my house and the prices seemed fair. I ordered for pickup through doordash. First problem was they never updated door dash. In fact now, hours late, it still shows my order as "in progress." I ordered 2 california rolls, a spicy tuna roll, and a salmon roll. The salmon was disgusting. Very dark, not pink like it should be. Spicy tuna was rolled bad and had more onion then tuna. California rolls were dry. Overall it was just disgusting and I regret ordering here. I feel like I wasted my time and money. Avoid this establishment. read more

It's a real shame how much this place has declined. I used to stop here frequently on the way home from the airport and was always delighted with quality of the sushi and sashimi. Went back tonight after having been away for a long while and was treated to a spider roll with spoiled crab. I'm currently visiting my family in Illinois right now. My aunt and older cousin took me here for dinner after my arrival flight. I really like the restaurant itself. I thought it was nicely decorated, slightly modern but still approachable. My favorites were really the appetizers. We ordered gyoza and the seaweed salad. Both were particularly yummy! I love seaweed salad and they do it really great there. The sauce that the gyoza comes with has a subtle little kick of spice. As for the rolls, I know for sure we had the volcano roll because that's what I picked. We also had two other rolls. One looked like it was a rainbow roll. Another was I believe mango and either shrimp or salmon. They were a bit on the small size and not very memorable. My aunt made a comment that they used to be really big pieces. My aunt and I both ordered ikura and I got some hamachi. What I don't like is that their sushi order form has all the nigiri in Japanese. I eat sushi a lot, but I still don't have the names of all these different fish memorized in a different language. I was really surprised that one order really was that, just one piece of nigiri. I've never been to a sushi restaurant where they charge $3.00 for yellowtail and give you one piece. It wasn't even the buttery soft, delicious yellowtail. Just one subpar piece for $3.00. The salmon roe was even worse. I noticed that they were all sunken in and dry looking. I ate just one piece of roe and it tasted disgusting and old. I chewed it up really quickly and swallowed it all in one bite to not be rude, but I'd never ever order it if I knew it'd be served to me like that. I've gotten better and definitely more fresh ikura at the grocery store. read more

Today I tried them for the first time. I got the Roselle lunch combo which includes an Alaska roll, Boston roll, 3 dumplings, miso and salad. With tax 10.60. When I walked in at lunch time there was only one other couple sitting at the sushi bar. They must be regulars because they were talking to the chef like they knew eachother. The waitress asked me sit to place my To go order and told me about specials she was very friendly. So why a 2 you ask the salmon was so thin it was almost like I ordered a rice roll. The salad was yellow and included the parts of head lettuce you normally throw out. The Tuna was ok. Caputo's down the street makes better then this and is not laking the fish. read more

My dear friend Amy suggested this place for lunch today as a good half-way spot between Carpentersville and St. Charles. We were both wowed. It is indeed tucked away in a strip mall but once you find it, so worth it. The atmosphere and decor is really nice, a step UP from many sushi joints in a strip mall. The chairs are SO comfortable, I can't say that enough! Not that this is why you choose a restaurant, but this isn't some run-of-the-mill sushi joint. I should have taken MORE photos, but I got a shot of the bar area and our sushi platter. Can we say NOM NOM?? They really have a HUGE HUGE selection of all kinds of rolls and the menu shows PICTURES. Not many sushi places do that, you have to go by the description. This is a nice touch for sure, and helped us make our decisions. We did the seaweed salad and green tea first. Yum. Nice portion too. Then the plate (see picture) has: Shrimp Tempura Crunch Roll, Jalapeno Spicy Tuna Roll (our fav, with fresh Jalapeno), Catepillar Roll and Shrimp and Lobster Roll. The service is friendly and attentive, yet polite, not in your face. I honestly cannot wait to go back and try more!! A friend on Twitter pointed out that they have an "all-you-can-eat-sushi" option at lunch. I'll have to ask about that! ;-) UPDATE: We've been back several times for sushi here and have always taken advantage of the "All-You-Can-Eat" option. Please note; with that option, when you have leftovers on the plate, they charge you $1 per piece!! It's funny because this evening we got REALLY FULL really early and couldn't finish....and I said to Amy, "This other place with an all-you-can-eat option charges you if you don't finish" and sure enough, we kind of received some attitude from the waitress when we told her we were done. I agree- it is shameful to waste, but we truly had no idea we'd become so full so quickly. So- buyer beware, the sushi here is spectacular, seriously, just be careful ordering on the All-You-Can-Eat option. ;-) read more

The food is so delicious! I just moved here from California so I was in desperate need of a sushi restaurant. So far I've only ordered to-go but both times have been great! The spicy tuna roll is okay but the California tempura roll (crunch roll) is great and the Nabeyaki Udon is to DIE for! Its way better than the one I was used to back home. The ONLY feedback I have is just for packaging. I would recommend putting the udon ingredients and the broth in two separate containers for to-go orders! By the time my food arrived from door dash the tempura was soggy but the flavor was still incredible! read more

This was our 1st time here. We ordered one 3 roll special for $24.95 (it's per person), plus one extra. The 1st was the Chicago tempura roll, served virtual like a sky scraper. The 2nd was a spider tempura roll, another was a fresh Alaskan roll, & last (my favorite) was the volcano roll from the cooked menu. The service was fast & friendly, atmosphere was pleasant & cute. I absolutely love this place! I don't know why it has taken me so long to say something about it on Yelp. I have been enjoying Sushi Cafe since it opened probably more than 10 years ago now and fortunately the place has never changed - same friendly wait staff, almost the same awesome sushi chef and definitely the same amazing quality of food. Simply the best! Unlike some of the other reviewers who are limited in their reach or wallet, we've been to dozens of sushi restaurants around the world -- some very good and some disappointing. However, we are NEVER disappointed when we visit Sushi Cafe -- it's simply the best!!! The service is always good and the food is spectacular!!! We especially like the Baked Lobster -- we order that every time we visit. In addition, we enjoy the Ninja Roll, Shrimp & Lobster Roll (my personal favorite), and Shrimp Tempura Crunch. And, we'll always try to pick two other choices to round out our meal. The atmosphere can range from busy & noisy to quiet & subdued. I don't care either way -- we go there for the food and the service. And, of course, a round of the Big Sopporo beers. Premise/Intro: A really cool tiny place on Randall Road that offers decent deals and good variety of sushi flavors. Decor: This place is very clean and has some traditional design to it. It's not a very big place which isn't too bad since it gives you a private dining experience. Service: The service was good. We never waited an obscene amount of time to get our sushi rolls. Also remember that this is NOT fast food and you will receive cheap and quick food. Sushi takes time and attention to detail since that is what you're paying for and not necessarily quick. Food/Product: Good portion of food. I always ordered the jalapeño roll which is delicious. Seriously spicy but that's the way I love it. Price: The price was comparable to other places. I found this place when I needed something to eat. It was a little far back so it was hard to see on Randall Rd. But It pretty good. I enjoyed the customer service from the entire staff. There was a lot of variety and things to choose from. I enjoyed the Chirashi as that is usually how I determine how fresh the fish is. The Rolls were generous and big. I'm always a big fan of more food :) And the spicy tuna had one kick. Talk about spicy!! (spicy is a good thing). Overall, The pieces seems very generous and not too over priced. Combined with good service, if I'm ever back in the area, I would come back here. I think people should check it out. For people who live in Elgin or anywhere in the chicagoland area. This place is a little place along Randall road. It's a cute Japanese restaurant. I always order the same thing the beef teriyaki and miso soup. My son always order the sushi special which is three different rolls for 24.95. It's a little pricy but it's a very good place. The owners are really nice and the service is wonderful. read more

Awesome place, it's a shame it's in an empty strip mall set back away from the road. The sushi chef looks like a very experienced authentic japanese chef and it shows. The prices are pretty reasonable, the cooked lobster roll should cost $16 easy, they sell it for $13 (or if you do the any 3 rolls for $25, it ends up costing $8). I don't know why yelp is showing it as closed, it was surely open today. read more

I came here and fell in love with this little place tucked away in South Elgin. I've passed this place numerous times thinking, "it may not be that great!" To my surprise it was quite amazing! I consider myself the Sushi Connoisseur. Friendly staff, amazing food and like I was definitely dazzled with their Unagi Rolls. Everything is presented in a decorative fashion. Monday-Thursday they HAD a special $25.00/per person for all you can eat Sushi. I took advantage of that! Unfortunately, they do not have it at the moment but I am sure they will be doing that again! If you ask the friendly staff if they have specials they WILL accomodate! This restaurant has a very big selection of Sushi along with photos and description in case you don't know what to order. I highly recommend their Caterpillar, Spicy Lobster, and Shrimp Rolls! They are served warm and just simply speaks for itself. Remember this place is also A LA Carte! This place is a sushi-lovers best kept secret. It is tucked away in a strip just off Randall Road, right next to the Manor. Easily one of the best sushi restaurants in the area and I have been to them all (many times over). I have been visiting Sushi Cafe at least twice a week for the last nine months and the quality and freshness of the food has always been top notch. The staff is very friendly and attentive and the place has a nice, cozy ambiance. Also, the prices are great! They even have an all-you-can-eat roll deal that includes any roll on the menu, even their premium rolls, and there at least fifty to choose from. Their miso soup is always hot and very tasty. Some of my favorites are the baked lobster roll (unbelievable!!), spicy tuna crunch roll and the bonsai bento box. The bonsai box is an exceptional deal. For around $12 you get miso soup, a salad, two large rolls, and dumplings (although I usually swap the dumplings for edamame) plus all the usual accoutrements fresh wasabi, ginger, etc. In all, the sushi is always fresh and tasty, the service is great and the prices exceptional! I discovered this place last year when my sister and I were just dying to get our hands on a sushi place. I'm very picky about my sushi, I need it cooked and executed flawlessly. This place does the job perfectly. We walk in, get a warm friendly greeting from the man and the main waitress, Diane, then get seated with menus already set up with pictures of their famous rolls and new rolls. They are efficient with getting menus and then quickly starting off with a drink (alcoholic, fizzy, or even fresh green tea [which is my all time favorite]). The waitress gives us enough time to make a final decision on what we're getting, which is honestly appreciated because it takes me a while to pick out my meal. Once the meal is picked out the waitress gets the order promptly. The waiting time is perfectly fine since the dishes I get are cooked. While eating the waitress comes at well spaced-out intervals to check up on the food and quickly clean up the plates that are finished. Overall the food is fantastic no matter what I choose. There are so many flavors wrapped in to one roll that it's sad to even see the last part of the roll be eaten! Again, the waitress is prompt in to picking up the used plates. This place is too expensive and the quality of the food is terrible. I ordered a spider roll and the soft shell crab was so heavily breaded in cheap nasty bread crumbs instead of tempura batter then it was fried in old nasty oil so much that you couldn't even taste it. The taste of all the rolls was gross. Their dynamite roll tasted like they were using canned tuna....Yuck yuck yuck at the end of this terrible meal, we paid $90 for two people for a couple of rolls and an appetizer and one soda to drink. Outrageous I should add that I am half Japanese and I have eaten at more sushi restaurants than I can count of all price ranges, some places are worth paying more for because what you get is authentic and high quality, this is not the case here. read more

They only have one type of soy sauce, no low sodium (which I'm used to). There was a fly in the restaurant, and in a very cold October makes me nervous. It landed on my sons food twice (so he had to sacrifice two pieces of sushi). The rolls were different than I have ever had. They were a lot more expensive than Jurin, which is just down the road, and has much better tasting sushi. That being said, my husband, who is not a sushi fan, ordered the New York steak roll and liked it very much. He was pleased with his meal. The place was cute. Yes, very clean and the people very friendly. I LOVE sushi and had always wanted to try this place. I ordered a squid appetizer which was really good! And a few other sushi rolls, both cooked and cold. This place has very modern Americanized sushi.. at least from what I have previously experienced at other sushi restaurants. And it was super expensive. The rolls were kind of mushy and not put together well. I got a lot of cream cheese in one section of the roll and none in the other. There were obviously regulars that came in and talked to the chef, so some people may like it. It just was not for me.. again way too modern for my taste. I would not mind trying it again. read more

TERRIBLE! After reading the good reviews about this place, I decided to check it out myself. I have to say ... this is the worst place eveeer! I started of with the house salad with Ginger dressing and omg! Ew ew ewwww! No way in hell that's a Japanese dressing. I really believe they bought a bottle of Italian dressing and threw in chunks of minced ginger and voila... Ewwwww!! Phony and lazy. Next the sushi... yuck I ordered the volcano roll. It didn't feel like I was eating sushi at all bc the chef drowned it with sweet brown sauce which overwhelmed it ... it was like dessert but with fish in it. After the 3rd roll, I felt nauseous and wanted to vomit. The rainbow roll was pretty bad as well. It had shrimp tempura inside and layered with a thin slice of salmon and tuna. I felt like the fish was a bit old; usually fresh raw salmon are shiny looking, slimy and kind of chewy but this place? ... ugh it looked dry, dull and stale. And just when I thought it couldn't get worse.... the green tea mochi... if ya gonna charge $3 for a small piece, at least make it amazing. the ice cream tasted grainy and bland and the tapioca shell wasn't even chewy. are you kidding meeee? After all of that, the total bill was $41.00. I would never go back. read more
