I don't ever really like ordering sushi to go or through Uber eats because of the reason with the food safety issues in room temp for the raw food. I called yesterday after receiving my Uber eats order and there was hair on it and I asked if the manager her name starts with a d if they even wear hair nets. and she refused to even give me a direct answer. I called her in regards towards a refund and usually they just give me one, but this woman told me I needed to wait until she contacted Uber eats. The fish was fishy, there was hair on my food, and the food itself was WAY TOO WARM , to even be allowed to be consumed . Never eating here again . read more

I am sad to be writing this review. This used to be a go to place for us. We were here 2-3 times every week. I'm not sure what happened. They always claim it's been a busy night or that they are short-staffed. Whatever the case, quality has really declined and service is lacking. While the actual quality of the sushi is still the same, Almost every order we've put in has come missing items or with the wrong items. Things that should be hot, like ramen soup or edamame are cold when they finally are served, who gets food and when is sporadic, and worst of all - the past 6 times we have come it has taken over an hour for food to come. Tonight two of our kids got their food 45 minutes after ordering. The third kid didn't get served for another 20 minutes after that. And for our orders, one of us got one roll. Two others got their soups almost half an hour after that and they were not what was ordered and were cold. My food never did come. I asked about it when the soups came. They raced to the back and clearly made it right then, so I had them wrap it, since everyone else had finished by the time it came. I'm sure they probably do a heavy takeout business, but the restaurant was not even half full. I'm generally a very easy-going, look on the bright side type, which is why it's taken me six bad experiences in a row to finally write about it. I hope that they will get things figured out at some point, but we and the other family we dine with regularly have now made a pact not to return. Used to be one of my favorite spots. I'm still giving it two stars, because while l am incredibly unhappy with the service and the order issues that now seem the norm and not the exception, the staff IS still the same friendly staff and some of the food is still good that does make it to the table. But I'm tired of $300 checks and such misery with the actual meal. read more

I waited 24 hours before posting my review. This is the first bad review I've ever written. My wife, youngest daughter and I went to Sushi Cafe for dinner last night. We were the only ones there. We ordered 2 appetizers to share (gyoza & Korean pancake). Both dishes arrived promptly to the table. The only problem was we didn't have plates. We waited 10 minutes to get someone's attention (3 people working up front and 3 people behind the sushi bar and we were the only folks dining). Finally we stopped someone other than our waitress as she passed our table and she did bring us 3 small plates. Our waitress came back and took our dinner order. My wife and daughter each ordered a sushi roll. I ordered a selection of sashimi and a separate roll. At this point we asked for soy sauce saucers which weren't on the table. We waited 10 minutes and my daughter took 2 saucers off a table behind us. After 15 minutes our waitress brought over the two sushi rolls for my wife and daughter. She briefly looked at me and went back to to front of the restaurant. I thought at the time that the folks in the back must still be preparing my dinner. I was wrong! 15-20 minutes go and no dinner and no one has bothered to check on us! Finally, my daughter flagged our waitress down by waving her arms and saying "excuse me!" Our waitress forgot to put my order in and had to re-ask what my sushi order was! 10 more minutes go by and the order was brought to the table (intentionally) by someone other than our waitress. The check was brought over by our waitress who never looked at me or said anything - no apology - nothing. We paid the bill and left a 12% tip - less than 1/2 the tip I usually leave. All I was looking for was an apology for what happened. Sushi Cafe has lost us as customers for life! read more

My husband and I were looking for a great, close by sushi place whether it be dine in or to go. We both were from NY so finding a BYOB place was even better. We had lived in Roseland for about a year (8 total) and gave sushi cafe a try when they were on Bloomfield ave. We loved it! Our waiter asked us if we were new, we said yes and he welcomed us. We started going on a monthly basis, then a weekly basis. The owner Paul started to know us which felt like home. We ate at the bar which was awesome seeing how they made the rolls. We signed up for the sushi class on Saturday for one of our anniversaries and it was amazing. We have since then moved and miss it. We both work in the area so we will go occasionally once in awhile. If you live in the area and are looking for a great time, try sushi cafe! I wish we didn't move so far :( but it's worth a pop in every now and then. read more

I do not condone business bashing but this is a health and safety issue. I ordered from Sushi Cafe and my pick up time was 6:26. I arrived at 6:29 and when they finally got around to finding my online order, it turned out to have been taken by someone else. They offered to re-make it and I waited outside. A good half hour later a man walked in with a platter of food. They took it, put it down, gave him different food then brought what he returned to the sushi bar. A chef opened it, moved some things around and put it on top to go. I asked if the expected me to take food that had been with someone else for 40+ minutes not knowing where it had been . They then offered to re-make the food again but I got my money back. I was told that nobody ate my food, they realized it was wrong and came back. I was told that they were sorry, it was their fault but that was the policy. The policy?! I hope nobody got sick from food that has been in someone's car and who knows what else for over 40 minutes. I actually felt bad seeing them turn away about a dozen customers while I was waiting because of distancing. This is the best sushi ive ever had! I went to the old location a lot but last night was my first time going to the new location and its beautiful! My favorites are the Pork Gyoza for appetizer and for rolls i love the Magic Murray and the Lucky roll. Sushi Cafe is a great little family owned place right off of Bloomfield Ave in Caldwell. I have been going to Paul's (the owner of sushi cafe) for about 3 years now and I will not eat sushi anywhere else. All of the sushi is fresh and so tasty, and he creates different rolls and special sauces that are OMG delicious and can't be found as good anywhere else. His sashimi is awesome, and some of my favorite rolls include the White Dragon Roll, Red Dragon Roll, and the Osaka Roll. It's rare to find a place that has it all! Great food, atmosphere, service, and BYOB! I never had sushi before coming to Sushi Cafe. The owner/chef Paulie and his staff were so helpful in helping me get my feet wet. Right away, I like what I tasted. I started with the cooked stuff, but slowly transitioned to the real deal and it is so delicious. I would recommend Sushi Cafe if you never had sushi before or if you don't think sushi is your thing. Plenty of interesting items on the menu and great prices. I feel horrible for not knowing their names, but there are two servers there that are very attentive and very entertaining. I'm pretty sure the blonde guy is Andrew and the dark haired guy is now working behind the bar. Sorry guys for the name thing, I'll bring you a beer and an RXbar next visit. Came back this Thursday 7/16/15 Was told I could not eat here I can only take out. I called them back later and was told I did not tip enough and I did not appreciate the food enough. Over the years, this place has gotten way better. I remember coming to Sushi Cafe's old location when I was in middle school or high school and thought it was awful. Nowadays it's one of my friends' go to lunch spots. It's not the best sushi in town--I'd give that honor to Ichiban or Nori--but for the price it's fine. Lunch deals are pretty cheap and always very filling. I recommend a bento box over the roll combo for lunch, because you get way more food and variety. I've only gone for dinner a couple of times. It's true that their sushi has too much rice, but it's still edible. On the bright side, the fish is usually nice and fresh. Their teriyaki is one of the best things on the menu, in my opinion. Service is usually pretty good. I've never waited very long for food and the waiters/hosts are always very friendly. Overall, it's not the best sushi around, but for a quick and cheap lunch it's not a bad choice at all. read more

Customer service and welcoming us in was pretty cool. Say at the sushi bar and had the guy make the sushi in front of us. Food was very good. Will be back when in the area. I was in the area, so I stopped in on a Friday night. I was really displeased with my experience. The place is way tiny, which makes me think it might be more of a take out joint. Another reason I think that is that the only menus were the take out menus that were in plastic containers on the table. I asked the server if this was the menu, and she rudely replied that it was. The rudeness continued, as she treated us like we were bothering her during our entire meal (which only lasted 30 minutes because we rushed to get out of there). I can always overlook bad service and ambiance if there's good food. The menu is so uninspired. There are only a few creative rolls, and it's such a small, generic sushi menu. I ordered a special roll that had mango and was informed they were out of mango. This limited my choices, so I went with spicy tuna. It was pretty small and not impressive. This place is great! I came here with a family friend and really enjoyed the rolls. When I came they were having a sale which made our bill cheaper. I had the eel and avocado roll, the New York roll and the California roll. Always my favorites! However, the reason why I had to to take off one star is because we sat there waiting for 50 minutes without the food coming out. Well, it looks like my search for great sushi in the area continues. I went to this restaurant on a Saturday night with high expectations, especially after reading all of the positive reviews on yelp. I ordered a salad, soup, and some sushi rolls and I was disappointed with everything. Let's start with the food. The miso soup was ok, but to watery. It was lacking substance and flavor. Out of all the things that I ate there, this was the shining star. The salad was just mediocre as well. The portion size was very small and the dressing seemed very thin and watery. Let's get to the sushi. I had 2 pieces of tuna that did not taste good at all. It was edible but definitely not high quality. The color was bright pink which is not what I am used to when eating tuna. I believe this color means that the fish was frozen or that it is of a lesser quality. The California rolls that I ordered were just ok. The pieces were very small and the rice was dry. The last roll that I tried was a salmon skin roll. Please look at the picture of one of the pieces. It was more like a cucumber roll. There was hardly any salmon skin in the roll. This restaurant would have earned more stars had it not been for the additional problems: They did not serve me any wasabi with the sushi. I had to get up and ask the waiter to please bring it to me. The waiter was a young kid who obviously does not have a lot of serving experience. I had to constantly get up from my seat to ask him for things, i.e. the check, extra plates, etc. Overall I had a very bad experience eating at this restaurant.
