This place used to be a nice full-service restaurant, but the recent remodeling makes it a McDonalds, the only difference being they serve sushi instead of burgers. Patrons need to take a tray, prepay for food, sit down (or take out if they wish) and dispose the trash themselves. This feels no different from a sushi kiosk in a supermarket or the sushi section in an all-you-can-eat restaurant (and you don't even need to clean up the table there). Decided to try out their amazing specials with my girlfriend for date night. One thing to note is that the wait times are incredibly long for their happy hours because its 50% off. I went to Sushi Don for the first time with someone who had been to the restaurant before it became solely a grab-and-go restaurant. You can sit in the restaurant. We did not know this before going here, and I was quite disappointed. I believe the advertising for the type of restaurant that Sushi Don is is lacking. You can choose from a dozen or so varieties (not all of the options on the menu are available), which are include cooked and raw sushi, but the cooked sushi are cool and not warm. You can still eat in the restaurant, but the vibe is missing I think. The restaurant used to have half-priced sushi at lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at dinner for Tuesdays and Thursdays, but this is no longer the case. This is about as good as it gets when it comes to sushi eateries. Clean and warmly-lit interior, competent and otherwise friendly service, and top of the line sushi, featuring some of the familiar all-American rolls (like the California and Philadelphia) as well as many more creative rolls. I was amused that they had Lion King themed rolls ("Baby Simba," "Nala," "Zazu," etc.), and I was so intrigued by the deep-fried "Super Dragon Ball Roll" that I just had to try it. To my amazed amusement, it was more true to its "dragon ball" namesake than the "roll" part -- it was essentially a deep-fried, golden brown-coated ball of rice, with spicy fish in the center, cut open into six, wedge-like portions, and drizzled over with sauces. I would have liked more flesh to it -- it was mostly rice and veg -- but it was tasty regardless. I also tried a basic squid roll, which was well-done. For those who are not a fan of sushi or fish in general, they offer a number of appetizers and noodle dishes that are fish-free which might be worth investigating. I was impressed to discover that they offer "50% off" on alcohol and sushi on alternating days every week (Monday night, for instance, at least at the time of writing this, is 50% off their alcohol selection, while Tuesday is 50% off sushi items). Was visiting town and was in the mood for sushi so we decided to get Sushi Don. I order two poke bowls and a spicy salmon roll. The sushi roll is average, I guess I was expected more fish in the roll but it was 2/3 filled with cucumber. Salmon or spicy flavors did not come through. The poke bowl was sad, I was expecting some color but it was so bland looking and drenched in Mayo. Also they put the most rice I've ever seen on a poke bowl, I would not even consider it a rice bowl, more like a the biggest bowl of rice with some toppings. The toppings were advertised as "spring mix" I got iceberg lettuce, the fish was good, I just all tasted the same because of the heavy sauce. I spent $36 and did not feel like I got my money's worth. This is by far the best sushi in Lafayette. They just added this super easy to go/take out pre made sushi bar. They had these lion rolls for $1 when I went in! There isn't much I like about Lafayette. I grew up in West Lafayette. These soul-sucking twin towns straddling the malign and polluted Wabash river are cramped, dirty and depressing. The portion sizes were good. The bulgolgi salad stands out, but everything was wonderful. The decor is beautiful, and not what you normally find as far as Asian restaurants go...it didn't follow a theme. The owner has taste insofar as interior design. The food was affordable. We have paid more for food of lesser quality. We most certainly will be back. It is a perfect stop on the way to or from Chicago. I've been a fan of sushi don for a long time but recently their service has been going downhill. I ordered a take out and they told me it was going to be an hour wait. I went there around 1h 15mins later to get my food and they told me they are swamped and asked me to wait even longer. I paid and I had a "processing fee" charged without any notice.
