My mother and I always come to Sushi Garden when I'm in town and I'm consistently happy with their steamed edamame, fresh seaweed salads and quality caterpillar rolls. The portions are large and the prices are reasonable. The servers, while not overly friendly, are always attentive. As far as sushi in Modesto goes, this is the place to be. You won't get any complaints from me. Like other reviews have said, this place is packed around the normal "meal times" and the sushi rolls are big! I came here with a good friend and we couldn't finish ours so we took it to go! They have a ton of options and are very aggressive with making for sure your needs are met (although it did get irritating that they wouldn't just let us have 5 minutes of quiet to decide what to eat, I swear like 3 people came up to take our order, poor Lindsay got all frazzeled by it). We got two appetizers (gyoza and veggie tempura) and 2 big rolls (the tempura philly and shrimp tempura) and it was under $30.00, which is amazing. Definitely the "One of the Best Place for Fresh Sushi in Modesto Bar-None." While I love the Kirin's traditional homestyle sushi which always hits the spot the Sushi Garden is the freshest place for raw fish and sake. Everything's so fresh, it's hard to believe you're hundreds of miles away from the nearest ocean. The service is great. The prices though, expensive are worth it; you'd have to drive out to SF or LA or something for sushi this tasty so think about that while you enjoy the sake sampler. Presentation is amazing. Every time I go there, I'm not sure I'm in Modesto anymore. It feels more like a trendy San Francisco joint and that's a welcome change of pace. For Modesto sushi, this place is my favorite. It is the best quality sushi in Modesto - not in California, not in the world, but in Modesto. They have a pretty good selection of fish and experiment with creative rolls that our outside the typical rolls you see at every joe schmo sushi place. Sushi Garden has one thing that makes it unique - they do something that I have never seen at another sushi restaurant - the ability to create a custom roll. That said, make sure you try a little something I cooked up: "THE RYAN ROLL". I go in there often enough where a good number of the staff know how to make it. You can order it by name and it isn't on any of the menus (yet). It is a delicious spicy tuna roll, with scallops, albacore, and hamachi covered in tobiko and tempura flakes with orange spicy sauce and ponzu sauce. Wow that was the most delicious sounding run-on sentence I have ever seen!. For feedback - the thing that stands out most in my mind: what the hell is with all of those dirty glasses and cups covering the bar when you walk in? This is tacky - keep this stuff in the back with the other dirty dishes - guests don't want to see that and it is nothing but in the way. Also for busy nights, consider having someone exclusively work the bar area. A lot of us want to order drinks while we wait but have to chase someone down to serve us. read more

EXCELLENT place. My favorite to order is always the Tiger Roll. Delicious. The service is always nice, the food itself, while I will not say it is the absolute best sushi I've ever had, don't take my biased opinion here - it IS excellent sushi. I've just got a couple personal faves above Sushi Garden, but I can tell you they make the top 5 on my sushi restaurant list. Depending on what you order, it's relatively affordable. A FANTASTIC environment as well, might I say - modern, yet still has that Japanese feel to it. I just recently tried their dessert menu and, while I was disappointed there was no tempura-fried ice cream, the mochi ice cream was to DIE for. If you live in Modesto area and complain about this place you need to get slapped. It was a Saturday evening and we we were in the mood for Japanese, and haven't been to Sushi Garden in awhile. We entered the restaurant and nobody greeted or acknowledged us, and after about 5 minutes, I approached one worker and asked if they were still open, and of course they were, it was still over an hour until closing, and followed up by saying we would like a table for 3. The lady seemed disinterested and by the time she might have come to her senses, we were already gone and headed to the Mexican restaurant across the parking lot. Contrary to what is said they do take rservations. How do I know this well when we walked in and they told us that we had to wait because the open tables in front of us were for reservations... grrr. This palce gets busy fast. we also had to send two dishes back because the waitress and/or chef misread the order and we were presented with a dish that frankly was inedible. I know it seems that people rave about this place but I am guessing that is because it is as far inland as you want to go before starting to doubt "fresh" sushi. They charge for any changes you make to the rolls and it seems that their big thing is to cover almsot every dish in a heavy mayo sauce and macadamia nuts. No joke they even sprinkled some on my sake nigiri. Their other downfall was the unbearable saltiness of their miso. I was really disappointed with the lack of flavor the Modesto Roll had. Five kinds of fish and avocado on top of the roll (avocado, cucumber, and tempura shrimp inside) with onions, fish egg, mayo sauce, and almond. With all that yumminess, you think that it would taste divine. Im so bummed. This used to be one of my favorite sushi place in the Mo. I even consulted with my husband about how his was as well. He said the Philadephia Roll was meh as well. The stars are for the tentative waitresses/waiters who were always checking on you. Making sure you had plenty of water and hot tea. Lunchtime madness seems unorganized....cups are all put on this counter where u first enter the restaurant. Many people waited at the door, some waited for tables while others are togo orders are all confused because there isn't much communication with staff and customers. I waited for my togo food near the dirty cup counter then an employee suddenly threw all 3 artificial trees right in front of my face. That was so rude without saying anything. I love love love this place. If I don't have a Tiger Roll from here at least once a week, I get very cranky. The service is great and the sushi is outstanding and really fresh. It's better here than in many places I've been to in the city, and it is definitely way better than anyplace else in town. Everything I've had here from appetizers to meals to sashimi has been excellent. Even an otherwise boring California Roll is chopstick-licking good. This is Modesto's best sushi restaurant. I love the fresh fish and different menu items that can't be found in another restaurant. The restaurant has a great atmosphere in my book and the staff is pretty cool and and for the most part friendly. I still give it 3 stars only because I am not that impressed with their rolls. They don't have that much variety and after trying many different restaurants ( somewhat of a sushi whore) there are definitely better variations out there. I usually really like coming here for the reasonable prices and taste. Love to get the different rolls and split with a group. When I went the other day for lunch on a weekday around 12:30 it was definitely bustling and had to wait 20 minutes for a table (good sign in this economy). The value lunch specials looked huge, could choose a meat, rice, and tempura for about $10...but my dad and I stuck with sushi wanting something lighter on a warm summer day. He got a dragon roll (scallops tempura) which was fantastic. I got the sushi special (5 pc CA roll, 5 pc sashimi)...have to say I wasn't wow'd by mine. My whole family LOVES this place! Even the kids love it. My son actually cried the other day because they weren't open yet and we found a new place (which also wasn't open), but he cried because he only wanted Sushi Garden. Their rolls are amazing, the soup is fantastic, and the sashimi salad is sooo good. They are super friendly and the place is clean. It's a little far from my house, but totally worth it. When I first came in I notice how the atmosphere was lively and loud. They are always packed. Although it was packed, we didn't have to wait that long for a table. I am so surprised by how this place got such good ratings. I went a couple weeks ago and my experience was horrendous. I went with my parents on a Tues night and it was packed. We waited 20 minutes for a table and I was pretty excited that this place was so popular. But once we got to our tables, everything went downhill. I LOVE spicy tuna roll and they were OUT! I was baffled that a Japanese sushi restaurant could be out. So we ordered the curry roll (out of curiosity), rainbow roll, and a sushi and sashimi plate. The food came out very fast. The portions were not impressive and the taste was mediocre. The curry roll was disgusting. The worst part of this place was definitely the service. We were totally neglected the entire time we were there. They didn't refill our waters and I actually had to ask the food runner to get me more water. Our waitress was nowhere to be found and then she at the end of our meal and stood at the table next to us for at least 15 minutes just chatting away (MInd you, she was only at our table once to get our orders and never checked on us). We needed more waters, ginger, our plates bussed and our check. We kept trying to get her attention but she TOTALLY ignored us. She finally got our check for us but it was baffling how incompetent our server was. I honestly felt insulted. If you want terrible service and mediocre food, you will like this place. read more

They have a nice dining room, good lighting and decent service. But, that's about it. If your not a sushi enthusiast and just go to sushi restaurants to eat saucy rolls and teriyaki. Sushi Garden maybe the restaurant for you. Their pricing is a little on the high side. What I mean is they are more expensive then the competition around town. I'm not an amature when it comes to sushi, so I always go straight to the sashimi menu. Their variety of meat is weak. The slices were so small and I didn't finish it because the meat was slighty old. I can tell because they puposely seared the meat on the outside to try and make it less noticeable. The night I ate there was fairly busy. I expected fresher meat from a restaurant with a consistent flow of business. The restaurant is still nice and clean. But don't expect anything original from this restaurant. Their Rolls are standardized rolls you'll find at any restaurant. I'm not from the area so I asked around and this was the place multiple people recommended. I ordered take-out and my food was ready in 20 minutes. Service was fast with my order which was great, especially since it was a Friday night. One thing about to-go orders was that they charge $0.25 for each additional sauce! I got a dragon roll (it was ok) and a California roll (simple but I'd have to say that it was the best California roll that I've ever had!) Staff are welcoming and attentive, and the interior is a comfortable setting that allows privacy even in a packed house. Ive been to sushi places where they give you an appalled look if you ask them to omit something from the rolls. I can't control an allergy, folks. Sushi garden is great and we've even brought family from Bay Area (sushi snobs) to eat here and they love it more than the froo froo places in San Jose. I've lived in NYC and the Bay Area and can confidently say this place has the BEST chicken Katsu I've ever had.
