Food: Sashimi Platter-the assortment of raw fish was actually very fresh and came in a large portion. Rolls: the rolls here are humongous. Service: fast, attentive. Price: I was initially turned off after seeing the price of some of these rolls since I normally have to order at least 2 rolls to fill myself up. However, after seeing the size the roll that they push out, just one order was enough. Ate here several times while working in the area. They seem to be quite busy on weeknights, but service is always solid. The sushi menu is somewhat limited and almost all of the rolls are covered in layers of sauce or mayo. This destroys the flavor of the sushi and tends to have me think that they are masking the flavor of the fish. For Modesto, they probably are a 4 star place, but in reality its really a 3 star. Also, their rolls are huge. Not covered with large sushi huge, but a ton of rice and fake crab meat stuffed huge. I wish they would cut down some of these rolls, so a single diner can order 3 rolls and not waste food and $. Edamame was steamed and salted, a small detail, but it's the little things that make the difference. The Modesto roll was not to our liking, didn't like the sauce on top. This place is the best for sushi in Modesto. I've been coming here for 2 years and always left with a happy tummy. My sister and I usually get the customized spicy tuna roll, the tempura roll, edamame, and house salad. We'll get other sushi rolls and they're always fresh and really good. We ordered the teriyaki dishes, but weren't too crazy about it. We'll just stick to the yummy sushi. The staff are friendly but can get overwhelmed when its really busy. The atmosphere is welcoming and not too cramp which is great for dates and large group parties. I've eaten here countless times, and i go there a few times each month. It is consistently good, the portions are great, and the prices are amazing! You definitely get a "bang for the buck" here! My co-workers and I love going for lunch, the service is quick and the portions are large enough to share which is nice and exonomically friendly :) My favorite is the tempura scallop roll... the almonds add a nice twist. Inside it's pretty nice, with seating at the sushi bar and at tables, too. I appreciates the plasma screen on the back wall. Lunch was soooo crazy. I think part of the issue is that they may not take reservations, which makes it a little bit of a toughie to get in exactly when you want to. So for lunch get there early. Ate dinner here and was generally disappointed with the quality of the fish. We ordered a staple rainbow roll, tempura/teriyaki dinner and the Chirashi plate. We arrived there about 8 on a Friday only waited a few minutes and were quickly seated and got our beverages quickly. The service was very prompt and efficient. I like to order a rainbow roll as it's usually a good way to see the overall quality of the fish and gives insight to how the other rolls will be. This one was filled with imitation crab mixed with a bland slightly tangy sauce very reminiscent of mayonnaise. The assortment of fish over the top was scant and lackluster. The tempura / teriyaki dinner was good traditional flavors well presented a pretty big portion. I had some kids with me and this was a good option for them. Chirashi was the biggest disappointment while the fish was fresh it just seemed of a lower quality not horrible just not great the whole plate was boring and seemed like it was get rid of leftovers plate. Very attractive interior, interesting layout. Employees were courteous and quick to respond. We went on a Thursday night and it was fairly busy, not really noisy though. We ordered take-out, so we didn't use the tables or waiters. Wait time on 2 orders (6 rolls and one seaweed salad) was about 20-25 min... but you can phone ahead for pick-up, avoiding that wait. The Menu covered quite a few things, so there was plenty to choose from (No Volcano rolls though) in addition to Sushi.The sushi was fairly good, I had the Spider roll and the Philadelphia Tempura roll. The Spider roll was only about average, but the Philadelphia roll was pretty darn good. The Seaweed salad was EXACTLY what I expect/want when I order seaweed salad, and it was delicious. All in all worth at least one visit to check it out, I think alot of people would enjoy this restaurant. read more

Every time I come here, the sushi is AMAZING!!!! I come from SF so I thought it would be an impossible task to find comparable sushi. The fish is super fresh and tastes delicous!!! I've been to every other sushi restaurant in Modesto and they were all AWFUL.. bad service and even worse food. This def seems like the most authentic sushi bar in Modesto. Not to mention that their rolls are about a foot and a half long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rediculous amounts of food! Also, the service is really good. My friend is severely allergic to shell fish, and after we told the waitress that, she came back and said "The owner will be making your order themself to ensure that there is absolutely no type of shellfish near your meal". Dealing with this issue of using the same oil to fry and being in a SUSHI bar is extremely difficult for her to eat, but they made a major effort to ensure her safety. Was browsing Yelp, saw a ton of reviews raving about the "BIG" roll...decided to call Sushi Garden and ask details as it is not on the pictured menu. I first ask if they have any specials today, as in a dinner specials...not "cheap" options. The man rudely says NO. Ok, no biggie. I tell him I was looking on Yelp and I was curious about the "BIG" roll. He said "you want one?". I asked what was in it. "EVERYTHING" was his response. I asked politely, can you tell me what is on it. Again he said, "a little bit of everything". Which is?? He sighed, started rudely listing off items. Just sounded so put out. It's not a regular menu item or else I would have researched myself. How am I supposed to order something I don't know the ingredients of? "You want one or not?" I told him no thank you, and that I would call them back. He hung up on me!! RUDE! For obvious reasons, I won't be going to Sushi Garden anymore.
