I found this hidden gem at the recommendation of a friend who lives here. Since then, this has been my fave sushi spot in the Shreveport area. I like the quaint and relaxed dining atmosphere. I have taken my Texas friends here & they enjoyed it! The sushi has consistently been top quality & fresh. You know the sushi is good when each bite tantalizes your taste buds & you have to stop yourself from trying to order the entire menu. My appetizers of choice are the tuna tataki and calamari. You can never go wrong with sashimi & I love love love the overly generous slices of salmon that melts like butter in my mouth :) !!! As for the specialty sushi rolls, they are good as well- I haven't had any that I don't like. They can even customize rolls too! On a recent visit, I transformed my caterpillar roll into a crunchy topped one! The restaurant staff has always been helpful & attentive to its patrons (even during peak times). And if you're overwhelmed by the menu, they can always offer their expertise on their favorites and popular dishes. Not many sushi places in the Shreveport area. This was one that I found and it was decent. A bit small and moderately busy when arrived. Ordered the monkey brain for the appetizer. It was okay. The outside tempura breading was a bit much. The titanic sushi roll was good. The main point of the meal was the sashimi. I like to judge a sushi facility based on the sashimi. Originally ordered the uni and toro, but they checked and didn't have any in stock. So instead, I ordered the red snapper, salmon, and scallop sashimi. When the sashimi came out, I was impressed by the presentation and cuts. Very thick cuts that were pretty good. Nothing amazing like Kata Robata in Houston, but good nonetheless. I want to start by explaining that the ONLY reason I'm even giving 1 star is because at least our waiter was embarrassed and apologized for the situation and 'resolution' offered to me by his management. I had the sashimi sampler and when it came to the table it had a long black hair wrapped over and under the sashimi pieces. Not good, but I understand that things like that do happen. So I alerted the staff to this. I did not want a replacement either because the freshness of the sashimi was not to my personal standards - which I know are high since I grew up on the coast and had super fresh fish most of my life. Again not something I would give a bad rating for because the fish is fresh enough at this place. Now to my complaint- I expected to get the plate taken off my bill due to the hair alone, however instead it was explained to me that the hair must be MY hair since none of the cooks or the waiter have long hair (as far as I could tell, there were plenty of female waiters etc that did have long black hair, but why argue). MY hair is bright red and shoulder length, and as you can see in the picture THAT is a black hair that is way longer than shoulder length. I could have argued and proven to them that it's impossible to be MY hair, but that's not what I wanted to spend my lunch time AND my boyfriend's birthday lunch with. So I paid for the subpar plate and resolved to never frequent the place again instead. If you, like me, believe in good customer service, word of advice: Don't go to Sushi Gen. read more

I had an amazing roll from Sushi Gen last night. If you like spicy tuna, get the Black Dragon roll you will not regret it. It was very fresh, tasty with eel added on top with the eel sauce (which is thicker, color of soy sauce and not actually made of eel like it sounds). All the flavors complement each other and have a party in your mouth! Normally when I get spicy tuna I don't get the kick I want, but this one had me do a double taste (mouth equivalent to double take)! The waiter on the phone initially told me 20 minutes for my roll but it was ready for me when I came in 15. Everyone is very polite and inside has a nice intimate atmosphere that made me want to dine in. There is a huge parking lot in the back so keep driving. Don't give up after seeing the front spots taken like I almost did. All in all, I will definitely be back. After seeing rave reviews on yelp prior to my visit, I can see why it has 4 stars. I got the grilled teriyaki chicken with miso soup, ginger salad and steamed rice. Ordered the boat and wasn't impressed... the fish wasn't cold, fish was sliced pretty thick so chewing was difficult. The rolls were better so maybe if I go again in the future I'll know to order more rolls than the nagiri. The boat was expensive too so that was tough. I'm also not a fan of salmon and mentioned that, it must've gotten lost in translation because we got quite a few salmon pieces. Lucky hubby because he got all those and half of the others. Recently gave birth, and what better way to celebrate than with sushi and sashimi for lunch! Parking was a bit confusing, so we parked in front of Chianti. We walked in and were seated right away. Ordered agedashi tofu, sushi regular (combo with 9 pcs of sashimi, 6 pcs maki and 3 pcs sushi) and otoro sushi. I was impressed that our agedashi tofu had really great flavors! The tofu coating was crisp, and the sauce tasted really flavorful. Sashimi were nicely cut, and were really fresh! Their rice for the sushi and maki were cooked al dente, and seasoned really well! I also liked their rice to protein ratio because they don't skimp on their protein! The only thing I did not think was worth it was the otoro, because it seemed like a poor grade fatty tuna. Bill came out $74 with some cents, plus the tip for the server and the sushi chef. In my opinion, Sushi Gen is the best sushi place in town. :) read more

First time trying this location and I was not impressed. Despite being seated immediately, service was slow. Soon after receiving our side salads we discovered one of which contained a dead fly! Upon informing our server of the clear issue, she was unapologetic and dismissive, blaming it on their "fly problem." It ruined my appetite and the overall experience. Will not be coming back. Visited this place several times now, and have sampled enough of the menu to write a review. Food (7.5/10) = My score of 7.5 is based on all the sushi I've had in my life. As for sushi places in Shreveport, this might be the best you can get. Sushi gen has a great variety of rolls, but in the end they all start tasting the same. The dishes I most frequently order are: 1) "Monkey Brain" and 2) Yaki Udon. The monkey brain a deep fried ball of avocado with spicy tuna in it's core, cut into 4 pieces. The Yaki Udon is a noodle dish and you can choose to have chicken, beef, shrimp, etc. Their Bento boxes are decent as for taste and proportions. The place is owned by Koreans, so some of the dishes have a little Korean flare to them. Again, can't really say too much about the food except it's the best place in Shreveport for sushi. Ambience (7.0/10) = The decor is decent and the place is clean. The music selection is a bit strange....Linkin Park in a Japanese restaurant? Otherwise, no major complaints or things to praise. Service (7.5/10) = Service is what I expect from most basic sushi places in the US. Keep the water glasses filled, be prompt with the food, etc. HOWEVER..... I've encountered the waiter Gracie G. has so vividly described, HAHA. Indeed this waiter creates an environment that can be uncomfortable for some. It's funny how he remembers you so well too: 1) what you ordered last time, 2) which table you were at last time, and 3) which chair you sat on. One can admire his great memory, or one can be creeped out by it. Despite this "unique" behavior, it has not stopped me from going to this place. The menu says they close at 3 PM. I got there at 2:25pm and was told they close in 30 minutes. I asked the server that greeted me if he wanted me to go somewhere else. He said "No, I'm just letting you know." When my server came take my order at the sushi bar, I asked her if the other server said "3" or "30"minutes. She said they close at 2:30pm. However, I could go ahead and place my order but the kitchen would be closing soon. She said I was welcome to stay and eat as long as I would like. I looked at the lunch menu and it said they closed at 3 PM. I went ahead and rushed to place my order. I ordered the lunch special with shrimp roll and 5 pieces of sushi. 3 of the 5 pieces were a bad cut. I'm kind of a sushi connoisseur - this grosses me out. I even asked for an order of yellowtail belly. This should be very soft and melt in my mouth. Instead it was chewy, veiny, and made me gag. I asked for an order of sea urchin sashimi ($17 for 3 pieces - a decent price.) I was disappointed when they only came back of one piece of nigiri and said they ran out. They actually gave it to me complementary, which was very nice considering it's normally $5-6 per piece for nigiri. If it weren't for that, I'd give them two stars. The worst part was that when I placed my order at 2:30pm, the kitchen staff bolted when they realized I wouldn't be ordering from the kitchen. I was the only person in the restaurant at 2:48pm. The sushi chef had even left and the waitress and one other employee remained. They proceeded to stand beside the sushi bar with the kitchen lights turned off talking as they waited for me to finish eating. Not worth it. Service was friendly, however a bit spotty. I enjoy the touch of white linen tabletops, however when served sushi without an individual small plate to eat over, what you end with is a stained mess. Also, ordered a beef tataki roll , had it repeated to me and still served incorrect roll. Now, the Sushi here is the issue. Not as fresh (tuna was bright pink, similar to that you purchase at Wal-Mart etc) rolls are ridiculously tiny for the price you pay and the flavors did not bode well. Sadly, the largest roll and roll with most value was the Yam Yam roll we ordered , which ironically was the cheapest. My son's California roll was massive compared to some of the special rolls. We ordered 5 rolls ( Yam Yam, Super Volcano, Louisiana, Triple Sexy and Beef Tataki, which ended up being Tuna Tataki) , which I fully expected to have leftovers, however upon seeing the roll size, we left full, but not stuffed by any means. Yam Yam - Actually, not bad, good value here Super Volcano - Horrible, sauce was thin, I literally counted 1 scallop between the whole roll, tiny, as if half-sheet of nori was rolled in other direction to make smaller pieces.
