This was an amazing meal complete with all the bells and whistles of a fine sushi establishment. We grabbed reservations and the place was packed for a Friday night. There's a nice little bar to wait for your party to get there. They won't seat you until your party is there, so grab a drink because inevitably somebody is going to be running late. I'm partial to hot sake and their house sake was actually pretty smooth. We also got a bottle of unfiltered cold sake and it was good, but I'm still partial to it served warm. Now for the sushi experience! First off, you'll find a small puck at your seat. Drop it into some water and poof it expands to the fanciest wet nap that I've ever seen. Maybe I'm easily impressed but I was a fan of how this night was starting off. We went for the premium course and I was impressed with every dish. The soup was good, and each bite of sashimi was even better than the last. You almost don't need soy sauce on some of the pieces. They later citrus to separate the fish and you get a hint of it. It was all smooth and fresh. The smoked sashimi was interesting. The fish was over pieces of smoked applewood which imparted just the right amount of flavor. After that was I. My opinion the highlight. The waygu beef!!! It's fresh and just the perfect amount of fatty. You cook it on a 700 degree stone so be careful! The beef is actually good enough that you can eat raw. I tried a bite and it was still delicious! After that was the nigiri which was high quality but I was still on my waygu high. The only low spot was the shaved ice could have been put together better. The fruits could have been more ripe but it was still a good end to the meal. Definitely stop by and you won't be disappointed!!! read more

This place was incredible! Best sushi I've had in DC. We came on a Saturday night and we're sat right away. The outside of the restaurant is unassuming but the inside is clean and modern with some interesting little decor pieces sprinkled around. Our waitress helped us pick a bottle of sake and then we each got to pick out a cup to drink it from which I think is just an extra little bit of fun. We decided to do the prefix menu and it was really amazing. Everything looked great, tasted great, and all the courses tied together seamlessly. Some things that came out were a little adventurous but I never felt like it was too risky. The service was perfect. Everything came out in good time and our waitress took the time to talk and explain everything to us. She was very playful but didn't bother us too much. did the omakase for my friend's bday. i think it's worth it for the price but definitely not one of the best omakases ive had. the soup was good. the appetizer, 2 out of 4 dishes were good the sashimi assortment- there was too much salt spread throughout the dish and the pickled veggies were overly salty too:/ left a bad salty taste in my mouth the wagyu beef + uni was good but a small portion dessert- green tea creme brulee was OK. not your traditional creme brulee but the fruit made it fresh and light overall good service and good ambiance but i probably wouldnt go back as there are better omakases out there. however, good for the price. read more

I've been going to the sushi restaurant across the street for years and it's great for relatively affordable sushi and cheap drinks, but for a more upscale sushi experience, Sushi Hachi hits it out of the park. Food is great. Service is great. Really everything is great. We did the 5-course Chef's Omakase menu, which was a good mix of sushi and beef. They paid attention to details and I think price was reasonable, given the quality and the amount of the food. All the staff and waiters were professional and pleasant. We had a delightful dinner. We had 8 course Omikase which means "chef's choice". This was a great decision on our part. The portions were good and each course had its special flavors. The staff was attentive and cordial. This is a great new dining experience on "Barracks Row". The beer selection is sparse and strictly Japanese. We had a reservation for 8 at 730pm; they squeezed us into this small space where you couldn't get up once you sat and only had it set up for 6. 15 minutes after our reservation time they brought the other table. They also only gave us 5 menus for 8 people; forgot to bring 2 and took our food orders before going back for them. They brought out the wrong food for two of us. And after 30 minutes only brought course 1 of a 5 course tasting menu. They also took forever to figure out how to split the bill and run our cards (even though they were using an ipad at the table). The staff knew they were sucking ass and brought free food, compted meals, after they saw we were pissed kept coming back to make sure stuff was okay. This place has five star potential, but the negatives were bad enough for just a two star review. We first tried to eat here on a Friday at around 6PM, and were turned away at the door because we didn't have reservations. Understandable, but there were literally only 3 occupied tables. That would have been fine, but there were more negatives... We made a reservation and returned on a Wednesday evening. The hostess clearly wanted to seat us at the bar for some reason, but I said we'd prefer a table. We were seated at the table closest to the door even though there were plenty of others available. I immediately regretted not speaking up, but I felt awkward after already having to insist on not sitting at the bar. It was around 20 degrees outside and windy, and the door doesn't shut fully on its own-- you have to pull it closed. I had to get up multiple times to shut it as people came/left. I did notice a server shut it once, which I appreciated. We both ordered the omakase. The nigiri was by far the best part, but everything was delicious-- but I wouldn't know about the vegetable tempura because we didn't get it!!! We didn't notice until we got home and looked at the menu again online. (We were talking about how next time we'd opt for the nigiri course instead.) Forgetting to bring a course for an omakase is completely unacceptable. read more

A friend of mine and I went here because she got a $25 coupon from the restaurant. We were seated quickly and the staff was very kind. We got the Blue Crab Tuna Tartare and the Kampachi Crudo as appetizers, as well as an assortment of sashimi. Both of the appetizers were absolutely delicious, and the standouts from the sashimi are the Wagyu and my personal favorite is always Salmon. They have a great selection sake, which my friend and I enjoyed tasting and learning about. I would definitely recommend this spot as a date night (or catching up with old friend night as I was doing). I will give this place some time. Nothing impressive. The price point is pretty good, but the food on the other hand was mediocre to sub-par. It was just an average food experience. We all got the omakase without the wagyu. The first course was an OK small bites with seaweed salad (bland), fish (pretty good), monkfish liver (a bit gritty), tako croquette (just OK, a bit rubbery). The second course was the soup. Different waiters told us differently that it was either butternut squash or kabocha squash. I felt like they could have diluted the soup because it was like eating baby food. It was so thick that it can be a puree. Flavor profile was nice though. It was a bit cheesy tasting too. The third course was the sashimi, and it was just mediocre. It was like any other sushi place you can get in the metro area. The textures were just normal. btw, sushi grade fish has to be frozen at some point from the ocean to the consumers so don't advertise that it is all fresh and never frozen. The fourth course was the "premium" nigiri sushi, which didn't amaze me as same mentioned above. The rice had a good bite to it though some of it was not compacted well. The fifth course was toro tartare smoked over applewood. It was not smoky at all. It could use a little more smoking, but the flavors were pretty good. The sixth course was supposed to be "hot noodle soup" as stated on the menu, but it was actually cold noodle soup. Was really looking forward to it since it was 20 degrees outside. The last course was dessert, and I really enjoyed this. It was ice cream with brown sugar syrup and lots of fruit variety. This was the most enjoyable part of the meal. We had a really delicious, relaxing and enjoyable meal at Sushi Hachi tonight. Our meal started later on a Monday night, so the restaurant was quiet - perfect for real conversation with a close friend. We ordered the Nigiri course with 12 pieces, as well as two sushi rolls (spicy tuna shrimp tempura and crab), and had more than enough to eat! I particularly appreciated that the nigiri arrived in little flights of four, each with a gorgeous little topping. For example, one arrived with what tasted like an olive tapenade that my friend said paired perfectly! I loved the first roll that combined two of my favorite items in a single roll. And I appreciated their generosity in sending by an extra miso soup on the house, as my friend enjoyed the one that came with the nigiri. In addition to the great food in a lovely setting, I really appreciated the stellar service. The servers came by twice in the beginning to see if we were ready - as we chatted - then took our cues to come by when we were ready. They explained dishes as they arrived, and whisked away each dish as it was finished. And each staff member warmly send us off as we departed, even though it was near closing. This was my second great experience at Sushi Hachi, and I won't hesitate to come back for a meal with friends or family! read more

The menu is always changing and being fine tuned so that (hopefully) every new dining experience is exciting and better than your last. For the price you're paying, I definitely recommend anyone in the area stop by and give them a chance! *FYI definitely not your traditional Japanese omakase I ordered the Nigiri course and my boyfriend ordered the Premium course. Both were really solid choices, and what it came down to when ordering (for us anyways) was simply how hungry you are. Even though we ordered different courses, our waiter took into consideration the similarities, switched up the order of the Premium course so that the timing of our dishes came out almost identical. This is a major plus in my book that they even thought to do that! Timing was near perfect. Some hits and maybe a miss or two, but considering it's a new restaurant, there will always be a few kinks to work on. We started with the Chef's Appetizer and the plate was nicely presented, but aesthetics aside, balance in taste is what's really important. The seaweed and soy beans (?) lacked flavor, and the torched cube of cream cheese didn't really make sense to me or add to my experience. The fish and croquette were better bites of the items on the plates and quite tasty. Next up was the soup - overall enjoyable and I'm glad it wasn't miso soup! The nigiri and hand rolls were our next courses and though good, I only thought that the proportions and ratio seemed a little off. In my opinion, the rice for the nigiri could have been molded just a little tighter - it seemed to fall apart to easily on my plate which made it difficult to eat. The hand rolls were possibly my least favorite part of the meal - though the salmon filling itself was very delicious, there was just so much rice that it caused my rolls to burst open :( Following my hand rolls, the smoked salmon came out for my boyfriend. Similar to the Chef's Appetizer, the aesthetics and the presentation were really unique but we felt that there was little smoke flavor. Still very fun to eat though. The best course/dish of the night was the Wagyu Beef "Ishiyaki". If your set meal doesn't come with it, you should order it extra - you won't regret it. Just reminiscing about the truffle salt paired with the seared beef on the hot stone makes my mouth water. It was all gone too soon! To finish off our night was the Classic Creme Brûlée topped with green tea ice cream (my favorite!) and fresh fruit. Refreshing and not overly sweet. The perfect amount of food, great service, and nice ambience to round out a solid experience. What are you waiting for? You should go make a reservation as soon as you finish reading this review. Heaven on earth. Within the short period of time Sushi Hachi has been in DC it has quickly become my favorite restaurant. I have been here three times and each time it has been flawless. The first time I went I got the Omakase menu which was amazing and filled with such a variation of textures and flavors, it was so much food I was stuffed by the end. The next two times I went we had the sever select some of his favorite dishes for us and our entire table was in awe by how fresh the fish was. Also the service is always spot on - they remembered us the second time and brought our table gluten free soy sauce before we even requested it because they remembered us getting it the time before. Take the love they show for restaurant dining, and flip it upside. What I will never understand is why the give you grocery store packets of ginger and Wasabi. So. Food was excellent. Got the omnikase and highlight of the meal was the octopus of the 2nd course and the cre brûlée. Service was excellent -we had Tony. Attentive and relatively on top of things. Location -definitely Uber's since it was a little further away from normal tourist spots. Price was ok. Prob just save for a special occasion. Be forewarned, the yelp deal (which usually occurs for new restos trying to get people to try the place) does not apply to Saturday's so don't base your decision on that. It's a little misleading because you won't know what the deal is until you check in. We got lured in because we weren't from in town so unfortunately it was a little pricier than we expected.
