The wait was always kind and checked on us frequently. They gave us edamame on the house which was a pleasant surprise. My husband ordered a draft beer and I ordered the summer cocktail. The summer cocktail was very refreshing consisting of blueberry and rum! We ordered the volcano roll, the Alaskan roll, the crunchy shrimp, and the yellowtail scallion. They were all amazing! The volcano and Alaskan roll were specialty rolls, and the crunchy shrimp and yellowtail were regular sushi rolls. What was fabulous about the regular rolls was they tasted and were topped with extra flavors just like the specialty rolls! Most sushi places leave them without toppings but not Sushi Hachi! We went here with a Gilt City voucher for our two-year anniversary and had a really wonderful time. The service was gracious and welcoming, even though the restaurant hadn't been open for very long. I imagine they'll get even better with time. We each had the omakase and ordered some house sake to accompany. The dishes served were as follows: - Chef's Appetizer selection - I believe it came with a little seaweed salad, seared tuna, a croquette, and a tiny whole fish. Nothing was particularly special but it did whet our appetites and made us excited for the rest of the meal. - Soup of the Day - was some kind of winter squash soup (butternut, perhaps?). It was creamy but a little bland. - Sashimi plate - delish! Fresh and decadent cuts of fish. We got salmon, yellowtail, tuna, and scallop. Writing about it is making me craaave raw fish right about now. - Smoked sashimi - I don't believe this was a cut of sashimi - more like finely chopped and shaped cube of raw fish. It was a little difficult to eat because it kind of fell apart but the smoke looked cool (even if it didn't impart too much smokiness to the fish itself - just enough, I thought.) - Seasonal Tempura vegetables - we got some shishito pepper, onion, and squash? It was well done tempura - light and crisp. - Premium Nigiri - Some of the best sushi I've had in a long time. The rice was perfectly portioned and the sushi was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. I believe we had yellowtail, amaebi, uni, unagi, and one other. The uni was perfect but the amaebi. Oh. My. Goodness. I wanted 14 more orders of that sweet sweet shrimp! I could have been perfectly happy to end the meal there but we had the final two dishes: - Hot noodle dish - udon noodles and warm broth was pleasant, but I was pretty full by then and, honestly, wanted my last memory of this dining experience to be the premium nigiri! - Dessert - buuuuut, there's always room for dessert! We were given matcha ice cream over creme brulee, with strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi. I love matcha anything, so this was perfect! Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely return for another special occasion for another omakase experience! Or maybe come back normally to order a la carte! read more

One of the best sushi in the area. It's hard to find sushi places that do omakase and they do it good! If you don't like raw seafood though, I don't suggest coming here, because they have the freshest sashimi and you have to try it. Nice ambiance and clean interior. Chirashi bowl was a good value at $30, but pickled vegetables in the bowl were too salty and off-putting. The Nigiri course was pricier at $45 (for 12 pieces), but good overall. Wagyu beef 3-piece sashimi was tasty, although the beef was a bit less buttery than expected (perhaps it was the way the beef was cut or perhaps it was a bit overcooked). Every single detail is just marvelous, the staff are all nice and the waitress would always come back and check up on us and she was very great overall. This is my favorite sushi place in DC (non Michelin star category) If you follow them on Instagram, they often have great weekday deals. I've been here four times and my favorite is always the Nigiri sampler. Every. Single. Piece. Is mouthwateringly amazing... like a roll your eyes to the back of your head experience. I used to never eat raw scallop, sweet shrimp, or uni before I came here and now I love it because of here! I've tried the omakase, and I think it's a great way to experience the restaurant for the first time. But sometimes the chef appetizers or hot dishes are not quite up to par with the rest of the dishes. I will say that the service is sometimes a little slow. Especially with the Omakase. Expect to be there for at least two hours. When we went the first time, we were there for three hours... they gave us some free nigiri, edamame, and a gift card without us asking because we waited so long. When we asked what was taking so long, the waiter just said "sometimes the kitchen gets really stressed out". Like what??? But every time since then we've had decent service. Definitely buy the groupon for this place if you're planning on coming! It's just fiscally responsible. read more

Sushi Hachi was quite an impressive experience I ordered the premium omakase - it was the perfect amount of food and each course was an exciting arrival. The standout for me was the smoked sashimi - which had the most subtle smoke flavor to accent the fish. The service was just as enjoyable as the food. The only thing I did not like was the dessert but this is because I hate red bean and it was a major part of the dish. Next time I would specify because they could've easily left that out of the dish. I highly recommend coming for dinner on a date night! read more

I've been here several times now and never had a bad meal. The service is pretty spot on, the prices are pretty reasonable for DC (especially if you grab the Groupon that always seems to be floating around), the space is quite nice, the location on Barracks Row is great, and the food is excellent. I've found the sushi to be fresh, not overwhelmed by rice like some places, and very well made. Truly everything I've had here was excellent and I plan on going back regularly for all the reasons stated. It was a Sunday evening and it was a bit slow so this might be a bit biased but service was super top notch. i imagine it would be certainly on point when busier from the staffing I observed. Kevin who served us was gracious, knowledgeable, helpful, not pushy. All of the sashimi was super fresh, delightful. The timing of the dishes was perfect. I have zero complaints here from quality, price, service, ambiance. I would love to see them evolve with a couple of more inventive dishes similar to the kombucha soup with parmesan which was incredible but they've only been open a month. There were some cool intricacies here that I did not expect. The expanding hand towel (I will always be excited by this) and the hot stone to cook the wagyu on was super interesting and a first for me. Great sushi restaurant on Barrack's Row. Small and intimate seating but the restaurant didn't start to fill up with dinner patrons until 7 / 730PM. I'm not a huge sashimi fan and normally order a roll when at sushi restaurants. The menu options for sushi rolls is surprisingly small and lacks the traditional rolls (e.g., there is no regular spicy tuna roll, their version also comes with a piece of shrimp tempura in it). The roll I ordered was good, but not what I was hoping for! Next time I'll probably ask if they can accommodate a custom roll. Had to send back two items (Uni and Toro) because they were literally rotten. I threw up in the bathroom after the Uni. On both occasions, the waiter told me it was "just an old batch". Those are dying words for a sushi restaurant. Rest of food was pretty good (not great) but not worth the total hassle. Service was quite slow, and the ordering system (QR code Toast Tab) was very glitchy. The cell service was slow and barely worked at times making it an overall frustrating process. I asked for the passcode for their customer wifi account and the server said "we don't know that". Ordered a small to go to fix a sushi craving. The fish was high quality but the wagyu was nothing phenomenal. The sushi rice had too much vinegar in it and it kinda robbed the quality and flavor of the fish. I ended up taking the fish off the nigiri because the vinegar in the sushi rice was that overwhelming. Maybe they had a bad day, I'm not sure. I went out on a whim (just kidding, I spent almost an hour just looking at all the restaurants) and took part of the 52 dollar omakase dinner here at Sushi Hachi. I have no regrets and was absolutely pleased with the quality. The only lackluster item on the tasting menu was the wagyu beef with uni. The beef was a bit lackluster in flavor and the uni barely had any taste or bite to it. Other than that item, everything else was so amazing. I was impressed with the chef's ability to add on small ingredients to a dish, increasing its flavor so dramatically. I will absolutely be back to get the nigiri platter because holy cow, the fish was so amazing! read more

For the price tag that we had I think I was expecting a little more of a wow factor, but I will admit that service here is excellent, and as so is the ambiance. However the food itself although good and freshly prepared, was missing something for me. It might have been because I didn't personally order the sushi in my group, or perhaps because I'm also not a huge sushi person, so I am negatively biased and I'll preface my review with those notions. I really want to give four stars but I have to say that although overall 'twas a good experience for me and my group, I'm not sure I could justify the higher price tag for the food I had. I had the wagyu Beef experience which was very interactive as it was fun to cook my own beef on a little stone rock that is very, very hot (please be careful lol). This is a classy place to take a date or celebrate a special occasion, or even to enjoy a nice drink with some business colleagues on a Friday evening in Capitol Hill. The ambiance is upscale. There is a mini towelette that looks like an Alka seltzer until you realize it goes into a little saucer cup with water and expands to become a towelette (this was kinda cool). Portions are on the smaller side. Like I mentioned I'm probably not the best person to go to for sushi restaurant recommendations, but if you're a sushi lover this place is pretty solid. Or the food--from the deep flavors of the tofu appetizer in broth we ordered to the dainty sashimi and diverse, tasteful sushi rolls we devoured? You're not going to find California rolls with cream cheese and avocado here. This is the real deal Japanese sushi made accessible to an urban audience. There is Japanese beer on draft, and cool acoustic-vibe music to listen to in the background. A little pricier than I would have imagined, but hey- this is DC! We had a tofu appetizer, two or three orders of sashimi , 5 sushi rolls, and a beer. We applied a groupon ($17 for $30 worth of food), and paid an additional $50 for our meal. Completely worth it! Probably my new favorite sushi bar in D.C. -- I went earlier this week using Yelp's 30% off dinner promo and had an excellent experience. My date and I ordered the omakase tasting menu (two plates featured in the pictures) and the lychee cocktail. Great service, fresh fish, and terrific value. I never go out to eat by myself, but I was traveling solo for work, and wanted to treat myself. I initially had planned to go to Acqua 2 a short walk away, but when I got to the street, the entire block was in a power outage and therefore no kitchens or credit card systems were working. Best blessing in disguise ever. I wandered in the opposite direction, passed many bustling restaurants that didn't sound that great, and then saw Sushi Hachi. It looked inviting and they had room for me without a reservation. I was seated at the bar in between two couples, which at first I thought would be awkward, but instead it was an amazing experience! The sushi was the best I had ever had (and I live in the SF Bay area so I eat it a lot). My favorite was a tuna nigiri with olive tapenade on top, but everything was great. It was even the best miso soup I'd ever had--little bits of carrots among the seaweed was a nice surprise. The service was the best I've had at any restaurant anywhere. The owner (?) even led those of us sitting at the bar through some complimentary sake tastings. We tried both filtered and unfiltered, and I no longer felt like I was out to eat by myself, and I left full and happy :) MAJOR KUDOS! read more
