OMG what an experience I had here! I can't think of ANYTHING bad about my visit! I was here for my little sister's bday dinner. It was a party of four girls... And they knew exactly how to accomodate us! So we all agreed to get the Omakase 5 course menu plus 4 orders of wagyu beef nigiri sushi as an appetizer. The wagyu just melts in your mouth. Comes with a bit of uni on top! And I love the sushi rice, how I can taste the individual rice in my mouth. On to the Omakase... 1st course: Today's soup. It was the clear broth soup that day. It was a little on the salty side, but still tasty. It had a cute design of sakura shaoed fishcake in it. 2nd course: Chef's appetizers! I don't remember what all of them were, but it consisted of some tempura, some green veggie with yellow roe, fat anchovy looking fishes, and I think chunks of white fish topped with minced tuna. 3rd course: Premium sashimi plate. Chef picks out 5 kinds of sashimi. We got scallop, tuna, salmon, yellowtail and I forget the last one. Pretty standard, however they were so chunky and fresh. Also melts in your mouth! 4th course: The sushi! Tuna, shrimp, eel, and... One more fish I can't remember the name. By this course, we were so full. 5th course: Apple wood smoked wagyu beef. This was just wow. They bring out a hot stone per person, with 6 pieces of meat. You cook your own to how you liks your meat! Just wow. Since you cook it as you go, the meat juice is still intact, meat is hot and tender, and it was one of the most perfect meat I've ever had! To make our birthday girl feel special, they also preaented us with a delicious dessert! It was creme brulee topped with green tea ice cream... So. Delicious. Best sushi I have had on the east coast. My wife, whom is Japanese, also thought this place was delicious. Be sure to check if yelp offers any coupons, we saved a lot of money by going that route. She had their Omakase (chef's speciality - おまかせ), and I had hand selected all my nigiri. Their hotate (scallop - ホタテ) was my favorite. You will not be disappointed. read more

I have tagged along with my friends and in laws to this fine restaurant plenty of times. However, last night I came with some of my coworkers and witnessed some very unacceptable behavior. We were seated in the back of the busy restaurant, and the food (nigiri course) was amazing! While talking to my friends, I overhear what seemed to be the manager of the evening refer to our waitress with a term insinuating she was mentally retarded. This hurt everyone at the tables' feelings deeply since we have many loved ones that are mentally disabled and using such a term is very wrong and insensitive. I personally was sick to my stomach. Our waiter was lovely and recommended great food to try and even gave us a free appetizer when the kitchen was taking too long, a very loving, bubbly, young woman who even told us she attends Howard U! I love this place's food and I wish this didn't have to be my first review about it, but I was encouraged to start using yelp tonight to bring attention to these kind of incidents at work environments! very unacceptable sushi hachi!!!! read more

This place just opened around a month ago and it is such a great find. I think it'll be hard to get in after word spreads about this place. The service was so friendly and prompt. The food was so fresh and unique. We all did the 7 course premium option, which you have to do! Best sushi I can remember having. The wagyu beef, where you cook it at your seat, was such a cool experience and delicious. Our group had a great time. We enjoyed the cocktails as well. So many details were well thought out here. Sushi was nasty and warm. Chu toro was the worst I've ever had. I dont know how they have such good reviews. Going out to eat in the height of the delta variant you typically see establishments try to spread guests out. The whole restaurant was almost completely empty and they chose to sit another guest right next to our table. I was not crazy about this place. The menu is short and definitely trying to be too trendy. Weird menu offering weird things: I myself prefer to have basic sushi and sashimi available when I go to a sushi spot. This place had a lot of new names and ways to serve and eat: it was a learning experience. It was decent but not amazing. They didn't have any cool sushi rolls either. Made a stop in DC en route to NYC. Came in during a Sunday, midday, and was promptly seated. Ordered two rolls, soup, and sake. Food was good. My partner ordered a bar cocktail and found it to be a bit rich in mixer but staff quickly offered another solution. Overall, service was attentive, presentation was nice, and food up to expectations (I'm a was picky sushi eater from Miami). Only tip to guests is making sure cocktail has right balance. Drink will come on sweater side (in sweet scenario) so if sensitive, ask to use less mixer. Personally, I like to taste my spirits with only a touch of flavor. read more

Wonderful restaurant! Decided to come here last minute on a Tuesday to celebrate a new job. The restaurant is nicely decorated and modern. I like the menu a lot - not overwhelming, good mixture of interesting nigiri/sashimi with other Japanese items. We were ready to order the omakase when our server told us that it was only $35 for restaurant week - what a bargain! Our meal started with a clear Japanese soup that was wonderful - not too salty or fishy, nice and clarified. Then we had the chef's appetizer which came with four items - seaweed salad, vegetable tempura, bbq duck, and spicy tuna on rice. I LOVED the spicy tuna. Next, we had a beautifully prepared shashimi platter on a bed of ice. Every piece was amazing - especially the scallop with truffle salt. Then we had the nigiri. I'm not a big fan of eel or shrimp nigiri so I did not really care for those. The tuna and yellow tail were really nice. Since we got such a great deal - we ordered a few extra pieces of nigiri and I'm glad we did because it was the star of the night - the fatty tuna was out of this world - melt in your mouth. Our meal ended with the wagyu beef with uni. Amazing. We have a regular sushi spot that we go to in Chinatown - but I think this is going to be our new spot! Great place. I came after buying a Groupon (I'd never heard of this place before!) I was the only one there right at 5 when they opened. I went for the tasting menu. I asked for extra uni instead of the wagyu beef since I don't eat meat (except seafood). There was no issue getting this item changed, no fuss or "extra fee". I had a pretty-looking jalapeño and rose margarita (with jalapeño and rose petals and pink and white salt) and I think some red wine with my meal. The meal was really good. Very filling, and I got to taste everything I'd been hoping to taste off the menu at a price that was just right. I can't wait to head back there to try a few other things off their menu. Worst service I have ever received. Fish was not fresh, was obviously frozen and thawed. No waiters in the restaurant for over 20 minutes. Expect you to order without a waiter. Might as well stay home and order in. But I would not recommend that either, as last couple times I ordered they completely messed up my order. Manager is unprofessional. Just FYI, I have never given a five star rating, but I would rank this a solid 4.5 overall for: (a) quality of food; (b) service; and (c) overall dining experience. First, the food was exceptional. I left telling my wife that I didn't dislike one bite from our dining experience. We split the Nigiri course, and each offering was amazing. My wife loved the Uni (and added another sashimi portion). The Snapper is my litmus test for quality sushi - even quality restaurants can still taste too fishy, but great sushi knocks this out; it was really well done. Highlights were the tuna belly and the Hamachi. They added clams to the miso soup, which was a great touch, making the broth very refreshing. Just so I'm credible, I can split hairs on a few things I'd change (but overall I loved everything), I did think they had too high a rice:fish ratio; I don't really like taking out rice since the proportion is part of the sushi's chef's prowess, but I did feel like my mouth was filled with rice sometimes. Also, the favor profile on the Agedashi Tofu was spot on, but I did wish they had a crispier texture on the fried skin. Still, the nigiri was the highlight, and this was by far the best sushi I've had in DC. Second, the service there is great. Our waitstaff was very attentive and so incredibly polite. They were friendly. Service was timely, even with all tables filled, which can be rare at a quality sushi joint. Plus, some sushi joints or higher end ($$$ on yelp) aren't so family-friendly (which I totally get and respect, as I remember saving weeks for a foodie-friendly meal, and you want it to be perfect), but they were great with making accommodations for my kid. My kid is fairly chill, so it's nice to not get a stink-eye when you bring the kid in. Third, overall, they do well with the dining experience. Noise level is low, and the lighting is great for dates and couples. Despite the prices, the crowd was a mix of casually-dressed people sharing plates and conversation. They have computerized ordering and payment, so cashing out was really quick. I do like Sushi Gakyu for quality, but my buddies and I have joked that they are crushing pulp to print our bill. The overall value proposition is on par with Sushi Gakyu and Taro, but I will tell you that I've had misses at both Gakyu and Taro. Plus, for whatever reason, I've never had friendly service at my many trips to Sushi Taro (especially with a kid in tow). Thus, if I have the luxury of choosing a way to satisfy a sushi fix, I'm choosing Sushi Hachi unless they disappoint me. Solid 4.5 stars. Very highly recommended. read more

I rarely actually feel the need to write a review but this restaurant has exceeded my expectations time and time again, so I felt it necessary to share my thoughts. The restaurant is modern and inviting. The atmosphere is tranquil and the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. They are very helpful and insightful about the menu and make you feel at home immediately upon arrival. The food is out of this world. I HIGHLY recommend doing one of their tasting menus. I have tried both the Hachi's OMAKASE (5 course tasting experience) and the Nigiri Course. Sometimes with a tasting menu the portions are so small you don't feel full at the end of your meal. This could not be more opposite at Sushi Hachi! You leave the restaurant feeling more than satisfied and sometimes may even have leftovers. The sushi/nigiri/sashimi is of superb quality and the overall experience of the tasting menu is a blast. The nigiri premium course starts with a miso soup of the day and an order of edamame, which stands out as the best edamame I've ever had. It is then followed by 4 rounds of 3 pieces of top-notch nigiri ranging from fatty tuna to wagyuni. The presentation is incredible and the taste is even better. My favorites were probably the salmon, snapper, and eel, but it is nearly impossible to choose, as each one is unique and individualized in flavor. Once the rounds of nigiri are done, they finally finish the meal with a sushi roll of the day. At that point, we were too full to try any of the dessert, but a table next to us ordered something that looked UNREAL. Earlier in the year, I brought my boyfriend here for his birthday and Tony, one of the staff members, made it a birthday he will never forget. In addition to the Hachi's OMAKASE, we also did a round of sake tastings. So much fun! They also have amazing cocktails. I literally do not have one complaint about this restaurant. I could not be more enthusiastic that I finally have a sushi place in DC that is my new go-to. It is affordable, delicious, and an all around great experience. After a long time of wanting to try omakase but unsure if I wanted to pay the high prices, I was thrilled when I found a groupon online for the experience and invited 5 other friends to come with me. Sushi hachi is a little far from the center of dc-the closest metro stop is Eastern Market. When we entered at 6:30 there weren't too many people there and we were promptly taken care of. The decor of the place was intimate and high class, and details were apparent including giving us a tablet that when soaked in water turned into a hot towel! One friend and I each got the omakase and other friends ordered a la carte. With each dish that came out, my eyes grew a little more wide as the presentation and taste were excellent each time (except for the sashimi entree, presentation seemed messy). The server explained what we got each time and each course was served immediately after we were done with the previous one. My favorite was probably the appetizers (5 samples included), sashimi in taste(fresh and nice fatty salmon), and wagyu beef. This was my first time trying wagyu beef and we get to cook it ourselves on the stone pot. It's tender, and doesn't have as much meat flavor of normal beef, this tastes healthier and more natural. My friends kept commenting "oooo we should've gotten omakase!" Dessert was good as well, fruit and red bean over ginger ice cream, although next time I would've gotten what my friends got, ginger ice cream over crepe brulee. Even without the groupon this meal would've been $62 including tip which is unbelievable considering the quality and amount of food we got and compared to every other omakase in dc (more than $100). The only thing I would've wished to try was the personalized experience where we interact with the chef and he is able to pick our next course based on what we liked/didn't like. If you are using a groupon, make sure you clarify terms and conditions before going, they almost didn't let me use it on omakase even after I had called beforehand, but I would be happy to go in the future without one nonetheless. The food was fantastic!! I ordered the nigiri sampler which comes with soup, edamame, and 12 pieces of nigiri. The miso soup may be the best I've ever had and along with the edamame was a great start to the meal. The sushi was all super fresh and very flavorful with a great variety. The only thing I'd change was that the nigiri came out in sets of 3 pieces, so I had to wait a few minutes between each plate. This wouldn't have been a big deal if I were dining with a group, but since I was in town on business and dining alone it made the dining experience a bit awkward. Not a big enough deal to deduct stars, but perhaps they could adjust that for individual diners. As for the restaurant itself, the vibe great, the style is clean/modern, and the staff were friendly. I came here with a gilt voucher for the 7 course omakase menu, curious of all the positive reviews and the menu I saw online, especially since I lived in Japan for a year and go back for work often. When I arrived, I realized there was only 1 omakase menu, and it turned out the only omakase menu was a lot smaller than what was listed on the website -- but since I love botan ebi and everything listed on the menu, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and hoped for the best. Good 1. The food itself was good-. I was skeptical about the 'clear broth soup' since it's not usually something chefs can make in the US, but it came out well. Everything in the chef's appetizers were unique and reminds me of things I would taste in Japan. Bad 1. The Premium Sashimi Plate website menu said - 5 kinds of Assorted Seasonal Sashimi of The Day -- it only ended up with 4 kinds. 2. "Nigiri Sushi - Maguro, Botan Ebi, Kanpachi, Anago" website menu -- ended up with only Maguro, Botan Ebi and Kanpachi. I tried asking the server if the botan ebi head (best part, they usually fry it - which is probably one of the several reasons why I got the gilt voucher) would be arriving later, and the guy said sorta a 'yes', and walked off, but it def never showed up and I think he couldn't understand. 3. The food didn't arrive in order- but ok, omakase pretty much means 'leaving it up to the hands of the chef'. Usually the noodle/rice dish probably should be the final part of the menu to wrap the palate up. 4. I felt HUNGRY after the meal. And I ate a late lunch, and it was a relatively early dinner. 5. Not that I need dessert, but the experience seemed to not have much to wrap it up, and most omakase meals usually have a dessert (even if it's just fruit) to cleanse the palate (especially after a beef/uni dish). But I was just ready to leave by then due to the frustration of the experience. 6. I think it was just our server, but I don't think he listened/comprehended very well, and so he didn't answer things (or he asked questions but didn't expect a non typical answer). It was frustrating asking for basic things, such as the bill - which should have been an obvious signal when we didn't want to see the dessert menu, and then when he printed us the wrong bill it took forever for him to come back and get our cc. The guy who seated us but wasn't our server seemed fine though. 7. This is a snobby thing to say, but I overheard a woman next to us that tried to order "spicy tuna roll, but I don't want it spicy. and I don't want the tuna to chopped up" -- THAT'S CALLED A TUNA ROLL. Overall: The food was good, but I left HANGRY (and we were there celebrating an early birthday - and was supposed to be a special treat). Just because it's a Japanese omakase and they serve things in small bowls, shouldn't mean you feel hungry at the end of it (and with all Asian cultures where food it the center of an event, one should never feel hungry). They need to update their website. I'm not sure if I'll come back again anytime soon, maybe to try out what the yelpers have mentioned for the $20 chirashi bowl, but I'm still hesitant. I'd rather stick to Nasime out in Old Town Alexandria, which has the same price point and it is a 5 course menu+dessert, but I feel the right amount of full at the end of the night. read more

We came here for my wife's birthday and felt very mixed about this place. We both got the premium omakase with the wagyu beef. Luckily I came here with a 30% discount because otherwise I would have been a lot more disappointed. Overall I will say that the quality of their fish from the sashimi is outstanding. But honestly I really think they should leave it there and not try to add (or make?) any sushi rice. The sushi rice tasted like they came out of the instant white rice pack you throw into a microwave from your local Korean grocery market that I could've slapped on at home. I am far from a real cook or a sushi chef but I have tried sushi from all ranges from some of the best in the city including the chefs table at Sushi Taro to a sushi express at a food court and these guys definitely come out at the bottom for the sushi. But I will give them credit for knowing how to pick their fish from the market. People seem to be raving on about wagyu beef which was OK. Our waiter called it A6 quality which does not exist (highest is A5). Secondly while the beef was still pretty good ( i mean it is wagyu) it was not worth the extra money. The best thing about the beef was that it got me full and thats about it. Overall I'm glad I went to see what all the hype is all about. And that's exactly what it was. Hype. read more

The quality of the sushi here is terrible. My boyfriend and I eat sushi at least once a week and this was our first time here. We ordered the seaweed salad, blue crab, grilled octopus, spicy tuna, hamachi, and fatty tuna. The blue crab didn't taste good, the grilled octopus only had 3 small pieces of octopus, the spicy tuna was ok, and the hamachi didn't even taste like hamachi. The ambience was nice but nothing else. Wonderful little gem of a sushi restaurant in Southeast DC on Barracks Row. This was my third visit and I am more and more impressed every time - from the patience of the staff with customers to their ability to handle -- with real grace -- my allergies and requests for them on slight modifications to the sushi. I had their mini chirashi which was beautiful and just so fresh with tuna, amberjack, snapper, salmon, yellowtail and tamago along with sake nigiri with tobiko and hotate nigiri with a beautiful truffle salt. The nigiri melted in my mouth and the sushi rice had the perfect consistency. Hubby had their grill your own beef on the hot stone and loved it.
