We started coming here during the soft opening and had an amazing first few meals. The fish was fresh, the set menus were great (and very reasonably priced!), and the service was good. Unfortunately, the restaurant had gone completely down hill since then. The omakase prices have increased every time we've been in, and a bunch of the set menu options have been removed from the menu by now. In the past three times we've been in, we haven't seen a single familiar face, so clearly turn over is a problem. All new staff means that service has gone by the wayside. We normally do a mix of hand rolls, sashimi, and nigiri when we eat and the past three times we've been in the restaurant the hand rolls have been completely different. They were perfect, then over stuffed and soggy, and the last time we went in, they were fish sitting on top of seaweed wrapped that I had to roll myself. Hands down the best sushi I've had in DC by far. I live in NW and I have not found any favorite sushi places in the years I've been here, but Sushi Hachi not only has the freshest quality of sushi but also creates an incredible dining experience from the service to the ambiance. I came to eat here alone which I've never really done, but I sat at the bar and had a great conversation with the bartender. I could tell he and the staff at Sushi Hachi very much cared about their customers when he was telling me how they prepare the fish to be the freshest it can be. I will absolutely come back and bring friends with me next time! Even their social media presence (i.e. Instagram) is very inviting and enticing with cool pop-up events/specials. Great value for your money too without compensating for quality which is a difficult balance for good sushi places to often balance. I had the chirashi and it was the best version I've ever had - and I've eaten a lot of chirashi. Would try the omakase next time given how great the price/value is. Avoid this place if you have any allergy or are just freaking allergic to frustration. I walked in to get a to go order. I said I was allergic to avocado. The gentleman helping said "ok, I'll make sure the chef knows." I then ordered a couple things and each time said "no avocado." They told me it would take 15 min. Fine. I got my order, went to my car. Opened it up. It had avocado. So I get out of my car and go back in. I shoe the guy. He says I'm and takes it back. It takes another 15 minutes. I get my order and go to my car. Open it and go to take a bite as I'm now late. There's avocado inside this time. At this point I'm almost crying tears of frustration. So I get out of my car and go back in. And I tell the guy that I don't have time to wait anymore as I had been there almost 45 minutes for a to go order with no cooked items. I tell him to just refund me. He disappears for awhile and eventually another guy (manager?) comes up and says that it will show up on my card after several days. I'm frustrated as shit and also worried this place might kill someone with an allergy. read more

Came here to celebrate my hubbys bday. Had an extremely pleasant experience and loved the food! I have to be honest that this wasn't my first choice when I was looking up sushi places that offered the Omakase menu but I'm glad we ended up here. Th food was fresh, the environment wasn't pretentious, staff was friendly, and the prices are not shocking. Also living 30 minutes outside of DC, this was a cute spot that we seldom visit when we are in the city so that was nice to explore. I didn't take a pic of the first course which was a fish soup. It was delicious but not visually stimulating- just broth with one piece of fish, mushrooms and tofu. Also the dessert wasn't part of the Omakase menu but we felt like we needed something sweet and refreshing after the last course which was waguy beef. We used a check in offer which got us 20% off our check so that was definitely a plus. Ain't no shame in saving money so use it if there's one. I also read in other reviews that they constantly run offers on Instagram. Will definitely come back soon! read more

We've tried the nigiri course and omakase. There are times that I can't just take the smelly fish but a single piece wasn't smelly at all. It was truly exceptional and fresh. Then the wagyu beef on a hot stone which was also a high quality of meat and the taste. One of the best sushi and wagyu beef I've tried in town. Awesome staffs and best service. The staff was very kind and knowledgeable. They were very attentive and got the need very quickly. As it was our first time, the staff went over the menu and made a recommendation with good sense. The atmosphere of the restaurant was modern and the music choice was good enough. Volume was good enough as well to the point they kept us private but enough to talk comfortably; Not too loud nor too small. It was the best and comfortable experience! This was THE most divine culinary experience I have had in DC. The 8 dish chef's specialty is a must- the fish is fresh as it can be and the Wagyu beef is unbelievably delicious. Came here with my fiance on a weeknight when the water was out in our building, so we needed a place we could spend a couple hours. I saw on my neighborhood listserv that for their opening month Sushi Hachi was offering a discount on their omakase. Since there were two of us we decided to try one regular and one premium omakase. We also got a few drinks while there. I decided on the Yume Ga Jitsugen Suru (Dreams Come True) which was Tito's, lychee juice, pineapple juice, star anise, and chili oil. It was definitely a beautifully made and presented cocktail but I was not a huge fan of the flavors and the chili oil. Still fun to try though! We both switched to Kirin Ichiban which they have on draft. Our courses steadily arrived and even though my hunger was satisfied after 2 courses I kept on indulging and enjoying the experience! The starting appetizer plate was my fiance's favorite. Fun little bites to warm up your appetite. The duck breast was definitely the stand out! The soup seemed like a standard miso, although mine did have chunks of tasty fish included which I enjoyed. The sashimi plate came next on a bed of crushed ice covered with a banana leaf. I never was really a fan of sashimi but holy mackerel, every piece tasted so fresh and melted in your mouth! I was thoroughly impressed and it was easily one of my favorite courses! The smoked sashimi and vegetable tempura were courses I would skip in the future, but fun to try. By the time the nigiri came out I was stuffed, so asked for a to-go box which our waiter happily supplied (and it came with a tiny bottle of their very delicious house made soy sauce!) Aside from the sashimi the other major standout was the wagyu beef that you cook yourself on a hot stone. It was some of the best tasting meat that was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be coming back just to order that! It was your own personal dinner and show! The meal ended with a dessert that had every texture and flavor you could want (from fresh fruit, to ice cream, red bean paste, jellies, and a mini bathtub full of brown sugar syrup!). It was fun to try each component separately, mixed, and then with the syrup. I will definitely be returning and trying more of the menu, but then again to get the sashimi and wagyu beef! read more

This place has very interesting items beyond a sushi restaurant. I have been twice and never had the same miso soup, and they were both delicious. They had a tuna tartar with blue crab that was delicious. The wagyu beef sashimi is a must try. If you are a sushi purest this may not be the place for you, but if you want to try really interesting sushi inspired food this is great. My kids always get so excited with the napkin in the beginning and my oldest (6) ate 7 shrimp tempura, which we ordered and it wasn't on the menu. read more

Some of the best sushi I've had in DC. It was really dead there due to COVID which was sad. They have a tiny cute patio out front but we sat inside since it was so empty. They use Toast Tab so you order and pay for each round of food or beverages. The prime beef grilling stone appetizer was awesome. Service was absolutely amazing.
