We came in for a quick lunch, and I had chosen this spot since I hadn't come since before the pandemic. It was nice to see the familiar ambiance of low light, furnished decor, and good seating arrangements. The issue came when one of the waitresses appeared in a rushed mood, saying that we had less than 10 minutes to place an order since it was last call. To be fair, we didn't know they would be closing so soon as they didn't have any updated operating hours on Apple Maps. More understanding could have been made by both the waitress and another worker when we confronted him about it. While we were clearly still eating, one of the workers (rushed again) demanded we pay before registers closed, which dampened our dining experience. Meanwhile, workers around us had stopped checking in, stopped refilling waters, and seemed completely absent from the dining accommodations, all whilst rushing us for payment. Their Oakland A's roll was good for the price, but I was disappointed to see that the salmon skin used in their Salmon Skin rolls was stale and appeared to have been sitting out for long. If the service was more understanding, or simply denied us seating since they weren't at capacity to serve us properly, my rating would have been higher. Relative to other places, the sushi rolls are more affordable and they're a good size! Pretty big. We tried their double hamachi roll, under the sea roll, and hurricane roll. As well as their gyoza for appetizer (only $5!). The rolls had good portion of decent quality fish. We loved their hurricane roll and their under the sea roll. Love the spicy tuna and the spiciness of it all. The hamachi roll had very generous portion of fish which we love! I also enjoyed their gyoza, pretty good! Solid meal for two on a weeknight. Food was decent but the service is so terrible. They had a long line of take-out orders and they prioritized them over the dine-in people so my sushi got out about 20 mins after my partner's katsu. They also got my order wrong and gave me double the sashimi I ordered and was about to charge me for it if I didn't correct it. Afterwards, getting anything taken care of like water or extra wasabi took a long time for anyone to look in our direction. When it was time for box and bill, our waitress came up to us to ask if we wanted a box and we said yes.... But then she got distracted and started running around forgetting our box. I said okay they're busy but even with us calling her back multiple times she said she needs to prioritize other customers before us. Another waitress saw that we've been waiting a while and tried to call ours but she was prioritizing other people so another waiter gave us our bill and box around 30 minutes after we initially asked. At the end of it, they had a forced gratuity for all parties not just large parties so they are rewarding themselves for bad service. Maybe next time, just order from doordash or takeout as it seems like they get priority over dine-in customers anyway and there is no forced gratuity for bad service. Edit: I did ask for them to remove the tip but they basically told me that I should've known its added as they have a small note in the first page of the menu and gave me no choice but to pay for the tip. Wanted to add that my partner kept commenting about how the seafood was left on the counters for takeout for a long time so maybe I take back what I said about ordering doordash/takeout. And execute it very well. Pricing is fair. The combo nigiri platters and sashimi plates can run in the high twenties on up. They also had a ton of rolls and cooked Japanese options. This is an old school feeling restaurant in a little rough part of town (we had someone hassle us a bit when we left for our car after dinner) and they were very short staffed. 6 employees overall to serve a packed house on a Tuesday night. 2 servers to handle 14-16 full tables. But if it means waiting a little longer to have a great meal at a fair price point so be it. I did feel for the server though. She was running around trying to keep everyone happy and serve as hostess. That's a lot to ask of a single woman and I appreciated all the people who acted with grace about it. I ordered two California rolls with real crab. It tasted like they used a filler of imitation crab and mayo. I believe from the taste they added a few pieces of crab instead of giving me all crab despite paying for it. I also ordered the chicken teriyaki meal. They use extremely low quality, cheap chicken. Garlic spinach noodles 4 stars spinach noodles a tad bit greasy. Clam teapot soup 2 stars not a lot of clam flavor, lots of lotus root, not Japanese, the broth tasted more like bone broth and not seafood or clam. Would not order again. If you're Latino don't bother to come!! I used to love this place and I recently went back! The older Asian server made us feel like they don't like Brown people to dine in their establishment. She took forever to bring us the menus and when she brought our food she rudely tossed the plates on our table. She never bothered to check in with us to see if our order was okay. She gave us gross stares the entire time but when a white person came after us the treatment and service was completely different. When we asked for the bill they had already added the tip on the bill. I noticed they have spider webs in the walls and the sushi was honestly mid. The sushi left a metal after taste in my mouth. Amazing sushi! Even better with the Groupon hubby got beforehand. We had the Snow roll which has amazing real crab. Tastes great without any sauce, soy or unagi. The SF giants roll was also very delicious with the ribeye meat which was nicely sliced and perfectly cooked. The flavor on this was was aided with a touch of the extra unagi sauce we ordered. The Ca crunch was good but not up to the level of the other two. Hubby said the tamago was a touch too sweet for him but it was just perfect for me. I got the bowl for $14, but I would never buy it again at regular price of $18. The fish provided was plenty and decent, but the bowl is so so so small. It was roughly 3 inches in height. Not measured, just from eyeing it. The sashimi took up a big portion of the bowl leaving the rest to be filled with a small ounce of rice. I've always had the issue of finishing my sashimi first with too much rice leftover, never vice versa. Normally it takes me two meals to finish my chirashi bowl (I get full after eating half and have to finish it later). Not the case for this restaurant. read more

My family and I have been going to this restaurant for the last 12 years since we moved to Hayward. The food was and has always been great even with all the changes in management and the menu. Although recently they changed how they bill. Don't get me wrong we are always willing to tip and show our appreciation for how hard they work although they put on a 20% tip at the end without running this by you. And when a family of 4 goes in, it's easily over $100. Like I said I don't mind tipping but it's a bit much to force a tip without notice. My partner and I went to this establishment on the evening of Saturday, May 11th just to sit down and eat dinner. Tell me why, when we walked in, nobody greeted us for at least 5 mins. I stood closer to the host desk where a man was, sorting out receipts and what not. He didn't acknowledge me for a while. I responded with "2." And he was friendly and let us know he was cleaning the table and we'll be seated. Said cool, thanks. We then got seated, got our drinks and food order taken (without much excitement or interaction, whatever no biggie). The sushi rolls we ordered all came out. But the vegetable ramen my partner ordered never came out. Not once were we ever told that the ramen was taking longer. We just assumed our waitress had forgotten. Once we finished our rolls, we wanted to get out of there, so we asked for the check. Once we received the check, we noticed the vegetable ramen was charged on there...but we had never received it. We tell her, and she comes back like 10 seconds later saying, it's done already. You want it to go or eat it here? And then mentions that they had a lot of to go back up orders too, hence the long wait. UHM EXCUSE ME. maybe you should have led with that earlier, or mentioned that while we were waiting, pero that's what good waiters do! But never mentioned it ONCE. So then it felt like we didn't have a choice and had to pay for it either way. At that point, we didn't want it anymore but we decided to keep our peace and take it to go. Because of this, we decided that the waitress (who represents the establishment by working there) did not deserve a tip. Because our time was wasted and we weren't treated with respect initially anyways. We left no tip. Two days later, today, my partner noticed on his bank statement that he was charged an extra $10. Which leads us to believe that an extra $10 tip was added by someone at the establishment. Hence the reason for this lengthy review. My partner and I are FURIOUS and have no plans on returning. When we called to discuss with someone about it, the worker acted like he didn't know what we were talking about. I will be going in person to speak to a manager about this because I am absolutely livid. How dare you. read more

The food here is great. However, don't be fooled. We ordered 4 rolls and 1 ramen for a total of $90. Make sure to look closely because they factor in the service fee already in your bill. If you look closely and calculate, tax is factored in after using the cost of the food AND the service fee. Normally only the cost of the meal is taxed, not the service fee. We had a party of 5 people yet they put the 6 person (18%) fee so we had to correct them. There's lots of ways you are paying way more for your food. Look out for this to make sure you're not overpaying. They also ask for more tips yet they already factored in the tax and service fee.... that would be a doubled amount on top of the cost of your food alone. I planned to tip the waiter because of her outstanding service. If the owner of the place wants to be more fair, they shouldn't include the service fee in the bill and let customers be the judge of the service. read more

I'm here every 2 months since I don't live in Hayward anymore. Only reason I come back in Hayward is my dog's groomer. And so Sushi Ichimoto is my default restaurant! Portions are very generous. Lots variety on their menu. And they finally updated the exterior of the restaurant phew... doesnt look questionable anymore from the outside. As I am pregnant, I can only eat cooked food. Today, I had the tiger eye roll & agadeshi tofu. They were both delicious. Couldnt finish them due to their huge portions!... the staff are very attentative and kind. However, i rated 4 out 5 stars. They're technically being direct to ensure customers tip at the end. I don't think theres anything wrong being very direct. My family and I have been going to Sushi Ichimoto for as long as the kids can remember. Tonight, I took my son and daughter to dinner while Mom is at work. We ordered a bunch of food (over $100). The food was good, the service was so-so, but that's sort of always the case and we've never been particularly picky about the order food arrives or how fast as long as it isn't insanely long waits, and it never is. As I see from other reviews recently, it seems they're automatically adding a tip of 20% onto every bill without disclosing this prior to running the card. I don't think I've ever once tipped under 20% at this place. But they've also never made that mandatory. Turning what is a tip for service into a mandatory fee is unacceptable. I understand it for large groups, that is fairly standard. This is not that. The end result is we will never be returning. You have lost loyal customers tonight through needless greed. Edit: To make it even worse, they did 15% not 20%. Which is even worse, because they cost themselves money for this meal and we won't be returning. In case anyone is confused, the money isn't the point at all. It's putting an additional UNAUTHORIZED amount on the charge. read more

We got our food pretty quick. We had sushi/sashimi combo.. fish fresh but they are cut so big. Guess I'm used to thinly sliced sashimi. Tempura veggies were cut humongous too. "DO NOT EAT HERE!" Sushi is not capable to naked fish, water is not cold but at room temperature and if you don't tip the amount you want or don't want to tip at all... THEY'LL FOLLOW YOU/RUN OUT THE RESTAURANT out the door to make you adjust the tip to the percentage that's marked on the bottom your receipt. If you don't tip "you're the favorite" because they'll run to you and tell you that you didn't tip.
