This place seems to be known for its unique all you can eat sushi menu, but I'm the idiot that opted out for the chicken teriyaki due to some unearthly craving *eye roll* Spoiler alert: this review ends with me eating sushi of my friends' plate despite my questionable life choices. I went here with a group of people who all ordered some version of a sushi roll. Their food came out pretty quickly. We all started with the edamame (which is only $2), thankfully which helped tide me over before my food came out the following week (heavy sarcasm). The presentation of the chicken was a little underwhelming, and my particular dish was overlooked on the chicken. I finished it anyway because I was famished and ended up picking off left over various rolls off my friends' plates. Needless to say, the teriyaki is not their signature dish. I basically got the sushi sampler between all the different dishes I tried, and literally every roll I had was exquisite. I'm not a big raw-salmon-hanging-out-on-seaweed type of person, but whatever I tried had no chance. I had never heard of a sushi all you can eat until I heard of this place. I heard about this place and never got the chance to go till last semester. Story short...I was in sushi heaven. So many choices but not that much stomach room :( I definitely suggest going with a group so you can order more types of rolls and not risk getting charged for not finishing the food. Also people kept ranting about their mochi ice cream, but honestly it sucked. It had a strong chemical and artificial taste to it that I couldn't stand. An all you can eat buffet for $27 is a danger to my waistline. The first thing to note is that you must eat EVERYTHING you order, which they made sure to mention to us when we ordered. Granted, we ordered about 40 pieces of sushi for two people, so that was bound to raise some eyebrows. The fish was pretty good quality for an AYCE place and the service was good (we got there around 5:30 pm to beat the crowd). We also placed our order before a huge 15 person table next to us, so we didn't have to wait to get our food like another table next to us did. Pro-tip: place your order all at once! We did that and didn't have to wait for our food, whereas that poor table next to us waited over an hour for their next round of food. The downside is that when they say you need to eat everything, that includes the sushi rice that comes with the nigiri. I love my carbs, but when you have a 3:1 rice to fish ratio, you don't really want to waste stomach space with rice. In addition, the rice was either stale or not fully cooked and had a hard consistency, which made it even harder to eat. We had to force the rice down by itself (since they didn't tell us about this rice rule, we had been leaving half the rice out as we ate the nigiri). Exciting new option on north Lavaca. For lunch, I ordered Austin Combo B-- salad, a big bowl of spicy ramen, 4 piece California roll, and 5 piece sushi-- all for $9.95. The sushi was high quality, super fresh. There were several lunch options at the $10 mark that all looked great, and a sashimi option at, I think, $12.95. Staff was enthusiastic and super friendly. The all-you-can-eat menu is huge (front and back of a legal-sized page) and prices are: Lunch (11am-3pm) $19.95 [without nigiri] kids ages 2-7 $9.95. Dinner (3pm-10 pm) $26.95, kids $13.95. All you can eat sushi? Yeah being the huge fatass I am I had to come here when I was in Austin. Overall, very pleasant experience. Even though this is an all you can eat sushi parlor, you have to eat ALL THE RICE or else they charge you for the pieces. What does that mean? It means you get real full real quick if you don't strategically plan how to conquer the food. Luckily for us, we ordered just enough to not be wasteful. Save the noodle dishes towards the end my friends! Quality of fish? Well, definitely not the best fish you'll get, but really what do you expect from an all you can eat sushi buffet right? It is okay if you are not a sushi connoisseur. Their portions are big but the taste is kind of meh. They put tons of sauce on their rolls and real sushi rolls don't have that much sauce. It was a fateful evening when a freind of mine suggested we go to this all you can eat Sushi joint. "All you can eat Sushi, is that really a thing?" Indeed it is, unfortunately that does not include Sashimi, but we ended up ordering massive amounts of Nigiri. If you love sushi and lots of it, you need to go here! Not only is the sushi really good quality, but you won't break the bank like at Uchiko or Uchi. They have all you can eat on their entire menu for either lunch or dinner. I'd recommend doing all you can eat for lunch since it is cheaper. If you are searching up for Sushi Junai, well we all know that we are all looking for - the all you can eat buffet. As a sushi lover, let me tell you that this place is one of the best places you can go to make the most of out of a 30 dollar buffet cost. You are basically given 2 hours of time to devour as much food as you possibly can, and the only thing holding you back is most definitely the waiters. Just be warned that whatever you don't finish, you have to pay for! (but seriously, who doesn't finish their food at a sushi place of all things am I right?) The overall quality of the sushi is great, even without factoring in the buffet element. They have a whole menu filled with different types of specialty rolls, and if you want to get the most bang for your buck, these are the types of rolls you want to get! Although they typically limit 1 order of each type of specialty roll per person, they have such a huge variety that you don't really need to worry about this. This was also the first place for me to try a deep fried roll, and these things are absolutely humongous as well as tasty! If you have never tried one before, I would definitely recommend it, my party was pleasantly surprised by their concoctions. My biggest complaints about the sushi here boils down to two ingredients/rolls: the beef nigiri and the garlic ponzu sauce. Their ponzu sauce is incredibly sweet, and they put it on some rolls as well as the beef nigiri, as such it tends to be very overpowering for a not too pleasant taste. As such, I would recommend veering away from the rolls that use this sauce or ask them to omit it. For those who have had beef nigiri, one would also typically expect a nearly raw safe to eat quality beef, for a more succulent mellow fatty flavor. I was quite disappointed when I was describing such a nigiri to my friends only to realize that the meat had been nearly fully cooked through with the ponzu sauce on it. My happy go lucky rampage of eating sushi had become slightly less happy, but I still ate it nonetheless. Overall, definitely come here for special occasions, especially if you love sushi! It can be quite packed at times, but I would definitely come back here if I had the chance. I LOVE SUSHI JUNAI! I think about coming here all of the time. The unlimited sushi at lunch is only $20/person--what a great deal! Everything is made to order and the unlimited lunch comes with appetizers and dessert. Lunch starts at 11 am, so I recommend getting there at 11 as the wait time can take awhile since it is all you can eat and the restaurant is small. There really isn't a hostess either so figuring out where you are on the waiting list can be a little hectic, although the last time I went there the lady was nice enough to call us when our table was ready so this has improved greatly over the last year. Sadly, there's not a real waiting area so be ready to wait outside. After sitting down, I recommend ordering some appetizers right away. I personally like the salmon poki, seaweed salad, and agadashi tofu. Then, if you're in a big group, I would recommend ordering 1-2 rolls per person and writing them down right away so you can figure out what to order in an organized fashion (I wouldn't recommend ordering more than one of a type of roll unless you know you really like it). I personally like most of the rolls, but I would stay away from the baked rolls as they are really heavy. Dessert is meh, but honestly what do you expect since the star of the meal is sushi. Everyone is allowed one mochi ice cream and one scoop of mochi ice cream. There are other things you can get but I usually stay away from them. The wait staff is usually pretty good but there was one time I went out with my friends for a birthday lunch and our waiter was really weird. Five of us asked for green tea ice cream and he put it all into one bowl, brought it to the table, and told us to hurry up and eat it since it was melting (it was half melted) since it would turn into cream. I looked at the table next to us and each person at that table had individual bowls of ice cream. That way your food probably will come out quicker also. The longest I've waited for a table was about 45 minutes, but that was on a Friday night, so there wasn't really a surprise there. The hostess was very nice about it, warning us that we might not even get a table because it was so late and how their last call worked. It was alright though, I didn't mind waiting. The service was slightly slow and our food does take a bit to come out, but if you notice there's only 2 or 3 sushi chefs working on everyone's sushi and that is obviously time consuming so it's an understandable wait. Don't try to come here and expect it to be like a fast food restaurant, patience is key with this place. Now on to the sushi. It is great. Wonderful. Amazing. And all of the other good words I can associate. I don't really like eating the rolls because it's full of filler things, but I would recommend the Pearl Special and the Spider Roll (Partly because I really enjoy spider rolls and this one is pretty good) Usually when I go, I get the nigiri and a bunch of appetizers. The restaurant would be so much nicer if it was a bit bigger because it is kind of small and it's such a great place so there's always a long wait at certain times. When someone told me to go to an "all you can eat" sushi place, I was skeptical. Sushi Junai, however was an amazing experience! I went with a group of about four people at lunch time, which is about $20 a person rather than $30 a dinnertime. Between the four of us, we ordered 8 rolls and had no trouble finishing them. All of the dishes were delicious, however, the calamari was the best option. I would also recommend tasting the mochi dessert (there's a reason they limit it to one per person;). I was staying across the street at the Hampton Inn for a conference and was in the mood for sushi. I thought to myself, "Hmm, sushi in Austin? How good can this be?" To my surprise it was AMAZING. It was TOTALLY PACKED on a Tuesday night so I knew it HAD to be good. It is BYOB and there is a liquor store right on the corner where you can easily pick something up. The place is small but they have a small sushi bar and about 15-20 tables. I had the Sushi Junai Roll and it was the freshest sushi I had ever eaten. I was eating alone and the waiter was very attentive to me and even gave me some desserts on the house, mochi in several flavors. It was SUPER hot out so it was just what I needed to cool down. They do offer All You can Eat but I can not eat that much! I am a huge fan! If I am ever in Austin I will definitely be back! read more

Everyone sit down, shut up, get out of my way, and let me focus because it's about to GO DOWNNN. Sushi Junai is one of these coveted, most holy AYCE sushi places - but you probably know that, which is why you're reading this review. But before you mistake this place for sushi heaven (and some parts of it is!), just know there's also some parts that aren't so heavenly. GOOD: + Can order à la carte or do AYCE ($30/person) + Huge menu including typical Japanese appetizers, rice bowls/donburi, fried rice, soups/udon, nigiri, and tons of rolls. Even mochi for dessert! No items are off-limits for AYCE, though there are some limitations on a few of them + Food comes out fast for the most part + Empty plates cleared & drinks refilled regularly + Plenty of seating, tables can be moved around to accommodate big groups + Can't go wrong with their nigiri & rolls. Nigiri is on the small side, but it's AYCE anyway BAD: - Wouldn't recommend their udon or shrimp tempura; both are pretty weak - No reservations and their waiting system sucks. There's no waiting area, so if the weather is bad, you basically have to stand smack-dab in the middle of the restaurant while you wait. Not much communication with waiting parties either: I noticed a server removed the waitlist before seating everyone on it, so those people came back confused and not knowing where they were in line. Other Yelpers also report not being called to be told their table is ready as advertised - Disorganization and miscommunication with servers. Dishes being brought to our table that we didn't order, with the situation worsening by having to awkwardly watch the heated exchange between servers, chefs, and patrons all trying to figure out what went wrong. I'll admit - with a party of 9, we probably weren't the easiest table to take care of, but issues could have been avoided if the servers just clarified our orders with us. Dude, you're writing it down - taking a few extra seconds to READ IT BACK AND CLARIFY would have saved us all some massive headaches Overall, everything tasted great and we enjoyed our food, but customer service -or lack thereof- killed it for me. Tried this place out because of all the hype of the "all you can eat sushi." I give this place four stars for the decent quality sushi but overall satisfying experience! I would recommend ideally a group of 4 people, maybe 5. But DEFINITELY, not a great place for large groups. We waited about thirty minutes total, for a group of 4 so the wait wasn't too bad. However, keep in mind this restaurant is a small joint so the waiting is done outside the restaurant. If you normalIy like rolls with a lot of different fish in it, I would recommend not getting the rolls, because their main ingredients were kani, cream cheese, cucumbers, etc. and it's really really filling (especially the fried rolls) the quality of the nigiri is kind of like the ones you get at Chinese buffet but slightly better, but not as great as upper end sushi restaurants. I think my favorite part of the whole meal was the Udon! I know it sounds weird to get it at an all you can eat sushi place, but the Udon was delicious! I've been wanting to try out an AYCE sushi place, and when my friend told me there was one in Austin, I told him we had to go when I went up to visit him. The shop itself is located between two other restaurants with much bigger fronts, so it's easy to miss. Inside, however, the decorations are very subtle and nice. The waitstaff are nice and friendly and greet every customer coming in or leaving. The food itself was quite good. The fish was all pretty fresh and nothing we ordered tasted funky. The tofu is one of the best things on the menu and we ordered it at least 3 times. While some of the sushi was a little underwhelming, everything was generally up to par. Not only has the service been poor, our eyes are burning and watering due to the poor ventilation that cause fumes from the fryers to irritate the eyes of anyone who spends more than half an hour in here. This restaurant is the perfect place for date night, birthdays, or any anniversaries. I will definitely be back because we had an unforgettable experience and it was great! My favorites are now the cucumber passion, salmon poki and the screaming O. I absolutely recommend you to try them if you are doing all you can it, and don't forget to have shrimp tempura and calamari tempura also their bugogi was so tasty too. We thought that the restaurant was BYOB but it wasn't.. (hey yelpers..) so we had to order house sake and beers.. be aware that they do not have any domestic beers, but their beers were fabulous with the dishes. Oh and their staffs are so kind and nice.. you should ask them for any recommendation if you are having a hard time choosing what to get. Very nice place and friendly staff! Not giving 5 stars because its sushi comes with too many rice and, since it is an all you can eat buffet, looks like they want you to get full too fast! Anyways, it is reasonable given the fair price ($22 lunch). Tasty sushi :) Avoid going alone - you can't order half portions - so, if you go with more people, you have a chance to prove different rolls and kind of sushi. Nice job guys!
