Well.....underwhelmed. I have been here twice, and both times the experience has been bleh. IMHO, the sushi is fine, but the reality is supermarket sushi is a better value. Here is what happened... We had tempura to start and it seemed like the batter had exploded into little balls that were sparsely coating the vegetables. The shrimp looked like a ball of tempura, and oddly resembled a hush puppy. The sushi was drowned (pardon the pun, drowning a fish) in sauce. Normally, I enjoy the sauce with sushi, but in general it should not be the centerpiece. Finally, the roll was warm. Not my favorite temperature. For approximately $14 a roll, not a great value or experience. On the plus side, our server was great. Hands down one of the best sushi places to eat in the area. The nigiri was incredible. It was my first time having Uni. It was everything I expected and more! Service was always good. We decided to check out this spot before catching a movie at SMG. The place is fairly spartan as far as decor considering it is a brand new spot. There is a bar and table seating for around 30 plus people. Do not come here if you want some date night ambiance. Do come here is you want some good tasting sushi :) We tried the following items: Tempura Ramen: I think this was $14 or less. A thin looking but tasty broth with fresh noodles and very well made tempura. We tried three rolls and two were really delicious with the spider roll being just a tad on the dry side. We are fans of sauce on our rolls so we asked for spicy mayo to add to the spider roll. I am sorry I forgot the names of the other rolls we ordered but they were very good and all were in the $12-$14 range. Sushi Kakogan is a good spot for eats and about two to three times bigger than Ichiban Sushi which is close by. Come check them out and enjoy some sushi. read more

However, we have recently noticed some new servers and their service has been phenomenal. We recently went for a birthday dinner and I really appreciate that we weren't rushed out. First time trying this place and I absolutely loved this place. We got "princes roll " and "sierra roll" they both were delicious!!! Staff is soo friendly and attentive. We got our appetizers and food very quick even though every table was full. Since we came with our little one in a stroller, got accommodations and help with kids food. Convenient location! This new, casual atmosphere restaurant in Rocklin is great for lunch and dinner or even solo dining. They close in between meals at 2:00p then reopens at 5:00p. I decided to stop by after work earlier this week to try it out. They have only been in business for less than a month. Since I had a late lunch at KoJa Kitchen that afternoon I couldn't eat much for dinner. After looking through the menu over and over again I decided to get the Hawaiian Roll. It's basically, California Roll with tobiko (fish eggs), 9 pieces for $8.50. The ingredients were all fresh (snow crab, avo, and tobiko) and the rice was soft and cooked right. Delicious! At first I thought I'd try a bento box, maybe I will next time. Their menu had a variety of sushi rolls including specialty, signature, and combinations rolls, appetizers - small bites and big bites, bento box options and noodle soups, and even vegetarian choices. The prices are a bit on the high side making everything just okay with me. I was actually looking for a 50% off sushi roll deals or a happy hour menu but I guess they're too new to implement these things for now. I will have to give it another try next time to, hopefully, bump up my stars. When I came inside I was the first one in. The hostess/server said I could sit anywhere I want. I decided not to sit at the bar and opted for a table instead. My server was a chatty, cute little gal and I even invited her to sit with me and keep me company and she did. I even offered her some sushi but she politely declined. I hope she didn't get in trouble for this. She is an asset to the restaurant. I can't speak to the dine-in experience as I have only ordered for delivery during the pandemic. I've tried a handful of rolls over the last year and most are well done and the menu descriptions are accurate. One thing to improve on would be the packaging. If ordering more than one roll, they package them all into one large container without dividers so by the time they arrive they are often mixed or somewhat disassembled. read more

The floors have a nice gloss with very pretty natural colors and they have a private party room that is painted purple... It gives me that Sac Kings vibe. Like it a lot! When we first walked in, we were promptly greeted by very friendly servers. They offered us a table but we liked to be in the middle of the action - so we asked for a bar seat and they accommodated us quickly. Since we were new to the area and weren't sure what to expect, our sushi chef was there to help us navigate us through the ins and outs of the menu. Moreover, he was happy to make us various items that were not on the menu! He was happy to let that culinary creativity flow and bounce ideas off of us about what items we liked! $8 Edamame?! Sub-par roll. Came here with my 2 year old and my newborn for a quick lunch. The server was sitting on the counter looking at her phone when we entered but place was empty so no harm done. It was too hot in there but overall place was clean and large. Ordered the lunch special grasshopper roll for $12 (a bit high for a lunch special) but ok....Server asked if we wanted anything else so I said "maybe just a little side of edamame?" She later brings out this boiling-hot, ridiculously HUGE salad bowl of soy beans to which I replied "oh, wow." (Again, just me and my 2 year old here). She leaves and I think this is super odd but maybe she's trying to be nice and give us extra, but it's coming off as awkward. She DID give my son a little plastic piece for chopstick ease, nice. The roll? Slightly better than the kind at grocery stores just more sauce. But sushi is like pizza, even the bad is ok. Get the bill and the edamame is freaking $8!!! Now, all I wanted was a small miso bowl of edamame. You know... like the kind you get at EVERY OTHER sushi place you've ever been too?! Complimentary soybeans are common, (and appreciated) but I'm totally fine paying a couple bucks for them too. But for $8 I could have bought 4 big bags from Trader Joe's!!! I explained this to the server. There must be some mistake. I only wanted a little cup of edamame. She apathetically replied they only had one size of edamame and THAT was it. Soooo, you can only order a giant salad bowl size of edamame? For $8?! WTF? Well, there was simply NOTHING she could do about it, and that's all she did. Nothing. We ate a total of about 7 beans so that's about $1.15 per bean. The bill said "edamane bites" (spelled that way) not exactly sure what the "bite" part of the edamame was but I was pretty pissed to pay $21.40 for lunch special, a cup of water and 7 soybeans. Had ANYTHING been done or said to resolve this, anything...(We were the only ones there aside from an older couple who came in later) I probably would not have felt the need to write a review at all. But with so many other sushi places nearby, you need to have decent prices and customer service. Freaking $8 beans!!! Ugh! read more

Ended up at Sushi Kakogan because the place we were headed to had line out the door. This is was actually a happy accident. Seated right away on a Friday night. Quick, efficient and attentive service. I thought the prices were a bit high (everything is going up) but here the rolls are HUGE to compensate for the $. You get what you pay for! The quality of the fish could be marginally improved and I felt that too many of the rolls had deep fried shrimp in them (cheap filler). The Rainbow roll II wasn't very traditional with all the proper fish selection. The Philly roll had nice size pieces of salmon. Over all I would return here again. read more

We were craving sushi and feeling lazy on a Thursday night, so we hopped on door dash and placed an order for Sushi Kakogan. We ordered 3 of their premium rolls and a California roll (my secret test of a good sushi spot). The rolls were large, flavorful and had quality ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised that the rolls with tempura shrimp were still crispy and warm, despite being a to-go order. Their fish was fresh tasting, and their portions were generous. Their crab mix was real crab and very delicious. The spicy tuna had a good heat level and had really good flavor. The veggies were fresh, and their sauces were delicious.
