I am from Jersey and came to visit family in Maryland ! I called around 9:45pm and I knew they closed at 10pm, the owner/manager accommodated me and made my order for pick up! I was delighted, I rushed over and they had it ready when I tell you this was the nicest guy ever, he took the sushi out of the bag to show me and asked me if the portion of wasabi and ginger was enough, I was so pleasantly surprised! Before I get into the review, the reason I can't give this place any more than 2 stars is the rice! For the uninitiated, the rice, fish, etc...should be at room temperature; the rice here was really warm. In fact, the sushi platter I ordered came with a bowl of rice and there wasn't a noticeable difference in temperature between that rice and the stuff the fish was placed on. Also located next to Columbia's Best Deli - I want to go in there and shout, "YOU DID IT! GREAT JOB!" like Buddy the elf did for The World's Best Coffee. If you're in the mood for sushi and you're traveling on MD-175, Sushi-King is a decent spot. But I'd rather head to Yuraku and stuff myself silly, or spend a little extra and get some tasty stuff at Sushi Sono. This is the epitome of a five star business. Upon entering, the super pleasant owner greeted us at the door and took our temperatures. There was a hand sanitizer station located at the front as well. As we were taken to our seats, there were partitions between each table and tabletop covers. I was very pleased with the attention paid to keeping patrons as safe as possible while dining in. Now, on to the food. I had the salmon belly nigiri, tuna belly nigiri, double six roll, happy together roll, eastern shore roll, philadelphia roll, and explosion roll to name a few. These rolls were not only some of the most delicious I have ever had, but also some of the most creatively crafted pieces I've ever experienced. I love Yelp for guiding me to find local treasures like these. Between the two of us, we shared the crispy roll, eastern shore roll, chirashi, and white tuna sashimi. While the first order of white tuna was perfection (just lightly charred and so buttery), the second order was unfortunately too chilled. Womp womp. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for the perfect bite in the first order. The chirashi bowl was great, with a satisfying assortment of fish - ranging from salmon, tuna, mackerel, rockfish, crab, and shrimp. The rice was just sweet enough and al dente. Little tasting tip - take a sip of hot sake after trying the shrimp! The crispy roll was topped with insane amount of tempura, but it maintained that crispy, sinfulness without being greasy. The chef also mixed in seaweed into the tempura, which provided a salty contrast. If I was feeling fatty, I would mix this into a big bowl of rice and just have it as is. It was layered so thoughtfully with creamy crab and avocado as well. I loved, loved the eastern shore roll! It basically has everything you want in a dish. You have tuna, tempura shrimp, and mango inside for your fatty, crispy, and sweet contrasts. It's topped with bountiful blue crab and wakame salad with a touch of old bay for soft, creamy, and chewy textural contrasts. Top all that off with salty fish roe that bursts on your tongue. You won't look pretty eating this (and hats off if you can open your mouth big enough to fit it in in one bite). But it's SO worth it. I recently had a roll like this in Orlando that utilized old bay just as well, and have been dreaming about it ever since. I'm so happy that Sushi King is relatively close to D.C.! read more

Didn't like it much over two occasions. Unagi was rubbery, perhaps over-cooked. Uni was not exploding with goodness per usual. Tako and Ika were nothing special and served naked. Tamago, classic, basic tamago, was large, but so sweet that I could not finish even two pieces. My official fish taster informed me that the salmon was great, and everything else did not meet expectations. Dinner for two did not get served anywhere near the same time. Sushi ordering menu was a "poor user experience" for both the main menu and ordering paper. Words were cut off.and descriptions lacking for custom rolls. Really, all rolls in all sushi restaurants need descriptions - they're all just made up anyway. Also there were some Japanese spelling errors, but who's counting? Friendly staff though. read more

This place really is King! I've been to a few sushi places in HoCo, and just resigned myself to good, but not great, sushi. Sushi King was a bit out of the way, so I had only gotten take out from them once. It was good, but not memorable, so I wrote them off for the last year. A few weeks ago, on our way to see a movie we needed a place to get dinner. Sushi King was incredibly convenient, so we stopped in. Upon arrival the host was busy hugging a couple of families that knew her. She asked about their relatives. Okay - so people love this place enough to be regulars. We were quickly seated, then a waitress brought us menus, another water, a third came by for drink orders. That's when I realized the dance going on behind us. Every person on the floor was passing orders and going to every table. I have no idea how they keep it all straight. I won't go into details on our orders - but the best thing was the salmon roll. I'm not saying that the complex and tasty rolls weren't incredible, I'm just pointing out that the fish was so tasty and fresh that a simple salmon roll was just that good. The jelly fish salad was literally the only thing we didn't love, and we finished that too. To top it all off - this is one of the less expensive sushi places! The service was outstanding and the sushi was off the chain. The sashimi platter was great and the seafood rolls unexpectedly amazing!! The seafood rolls are not on the menu but you can ask for them. Came here with my brother on a weekday early evening. The restaurant had a decent crowd but there was no wait and we were seated immediately. We ordered the Spicy scallop roll (6 pieces), the Darling roll (8 pieces, special roll), and the Warm to the soul Roll (8 pieces, special roll) to share. My brother really enjoyed the darling roll which is baked in the oven (I found it to be slightly heavy and was not the biggest fan of the coconut flavor paired with salmon, but it was decent). With Sushi Sono pretty much down the toilet, Sushi King is now the undisputed best sushi restaurant in central Maryland. This traditionalist sushi restaurant inherited what an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant is all about. First attribute is the freshness and preparation of the ingredients. For example, so many sushi restaurants in the area are afraid to offer mackerel for two reasons: they don't know how and they can't guarantee the freshness of the soba, which can easily spoil. But here, you can taste the juiciness of the fish without the dried out vinegar texture that most people associate with mackerel because of bad restaurants. Secondly, they have the right spirit of service. The wait staff kept the right distance to allow us to carry on conversations with the appropriate amount of light banterig in between. It both serves to respect you as a customer and to make you feel like part of the family at the same time. The wait staff is always nearby whenever we ran out of tea or needed additional services. Third and lastly is the attention to customers, which reflects in the details of their craft. For example, on the thicker slices of fish on the nigiri, a few thin knife stroke over the top helps to make the nigiri as a whole more consumable. The nigiri is also made with the perfect balance of fish and rice that they finish at the same time in your mouth. This is my Happy place and my go to spot for fresh sushi. Today I sat at the bar and it was eventful getting to see my sushi being made. The setting here is quiet, dim and relaxing. It's a come as you are kinda place, and I can come here and eat alone and not actually feel alone. I'm always greeted with nothing but kindness and I've never had to wait long for any services. The menu is very inexpensive, I love it. My favorite is the tempura shrimp roll and rice. I also enjoy getting my gum at the end, those little gums are so flavorful. Stumbled in here by accident and I was glad to have come here for dinner. Obviously this is a popular place in Columbia and they have lots of frequent customers. Ironically, the staff are Chinese Not Japanese or Koreans. Staff are mostly very friendly and refill your drinks in speedy manner. Takes your order promptly and food is served in adequate amount of time. Food - although there are many sushi restaurants out there, this place is not cheap either. Average $ for each roll that has even remotely fresh and real fish costs around 14$. Each roll has about 6-8 pieces and moderate amount of rice but you can be sure that they use fresh fresh fish (when you order the real ones that is.. ). Rolls are prepared well. Sashimi is fresh and good amount too. They also have Pot menu that I want to try at some point.. all the of dish sounded super delicious and healthy too. Only downside was that dessert menu was not that impressive - mochi, ice cream, fried ice cream, and waffle ice cream. Tables - they have bars, tables, and rooms for bigger party. Atmosphere - staff are dressed in Kimonos and they are all polite and helpful. This place is definitely for people who are willing to spend their $ on fresh sushi because it's sooo easy to spend $30-40 per person here. So come hungry with fat wallet =P read more

Sushi King has a genuine Japanese feel with little side rooms and tea rooms. I often eat at Sushi King either for lunch or early dinner and beat the crowds so I have never had to think about reservations. It's far from my house but if I'm in the Columbia area, this one of the better restaurants especially over the chain restaurants. They never rush us out and even add more people to the room so we can have livelier conversations and not feel like we're disrupting the peace :-) The service is always perfect and the sushi is very fresh. I usually stick to a few of my favorites like the Crazy Roll which is a little spicy. I'm allergic to shellfish so all the shrimp and real crab rolls are automatically out but maybe I will ask them to substitute the fresh crab for imitation crab next time. This is the type of place that exceeds your expectation, if you know exactly what you like. If you order salmon rolls but don't particularly care for salmon, please don't blame the sushi chef. With that said, Sushi King is one of the best sushi places in Maryland. When comparing sushi, there are so many factors involved. What Sushi King does great is having a solid list of special rolls to consider (not 10 pages like Yuraku - I kid, I kid), with great atmosphere and super friendly service. The owner frequently goes around the tables to make sure everyone's taken care of, and there is a decent dinner pace for food to arrive at your table. My fiancée ordered the appetizers, so I don't exactly know what they are called on the menu - but show the pictures to the waiter/waitress and order them. You will NOT regret it. I did choose the rolls (pretty in red and east shoreline) and they were outstanding. If there was one improvement to suggest, is that the sushi can be another 15% larger, then everything will be perfect. If you're in the Baltimore/College Park area, this is a no-brainer. read more
