First off, I have to say I am not some huge sushi connoisseur, and I realize a place that charges $17 and some change for all-you-can-eat sushi is probably not the best in the world. That said, my friends and I regularly frequent the Sushi King on Jefferson Ave, and always had a great time. The quality of the food at this location was comparable, but it failed in a major way: service: (1) The other Sushi King is always good about adjusting orders to what you want. It may not be exactly on the menu, but if you ask for something that they clearly have all the ingredients for, they would oblige without batting an eyelash. At this one, my sister asked for tempura vegetables, but only yams, and only got it after going back and forth about it with the waitress. Huh? (2) BY FAR, the worse part was the wait. Obviously, at a sushi place, you are ordering very small portions: four pieces of black pepper tuna, a small bowl of soup, three pieces of salmon sushi. Typically, at the other location, whenever the waitress would bring our order she would take the next one, and by the time we finished, we were getting the next round. Here, we would sit with no food for sometimes 15 - 20 minutes. It was frustrating, especially since I was starving on that particular day. As we were seated outside, one time I actually had to go inside, search for a employee and beg for service. I should mention that the restaurant was almost empty. I wouldn't go back to this location. I came here with my family and waited 10 minutes to be seated and after waiting and watching the hostess walk around my family and I sat ourselves down. within another 10 minutes she then came to the table and told us we aren't aloud to sit down without permission of the waitress sitting us. she walked away, we waited another 5-10 minutes and still nobody came and asked for drinks menu, or their food service. my parents had already ate a mini plate of the salad bar. we walked up and asked another waiter how much it would be so we could leave, he said you can leave it'll be fine. as we left we then saw the waitress that gave us a rude comment, so we told her we said we would be leaving now, thanks for the service. she then replied with " I don't care" while on her phone. I came here with a large party for lunch. The servers were very friendly and openly admitted we were wearing them out with the all you can eat sushi back to back orders. Lol. I can definitely appreciate honesty. The server forgot an order of sushi of mine but when I told him as I was paying my check he immediately brought it out. I came a second time by my lonesome around 4pm and sat at the bar and ordered all you can eat. The sushi came within 10 mins but I noticed it was more rice than actual fish/shrimp or whatever ingredient was in the sushi. Each subsequent roll I ordered came within 7-10 minutes. I LOVE LOVE THIS SUSHI KING. My boyfriend and I visit this location at least twice a month. It is AYCE and they have a huge menu. Each time we have been, we always had wonderful service and the food came out fairly quick. Of course, entrees take a lot longer than sushi. read more

Been here a couple times already and I have never been disappointed. Loved every sushi I ordered as well as their appetizers and entrees. My favorite is the Volcano Roll. Staff is very friendly here and always makes sure everyone got their orders. Had a going away event for my friend/coworker separating from the military and reserved a room. The manager of the establishment was very kind and even waived the fees to hold the room! The staff handled everything accordingly with no complaints. There were a great number of us there to support him and everyone had a great time and a great meal. I had recommended a few of my friends of this place and they were very satisfied. I definitely would recommend anyone who loves Asian cuisine and great sushi as well as those who want to try new things to come down to Sushi King in Hampton! read more

We have gone to this location numerous times, every time it takes a while to be seated, after being seated it takes even longer for a server to take your drink order. Whenever they make their way back an take you good order they usually mess it up or forget things. The food is decent but the horrible service ruins the experience. Ever since this restaurant came under new management, the service has been awful. It took forever for our food to come out, and they didn't even give us our appetizers before our actual food. The staff never refilled our drinks, and the food was poorly prepared, with parts of my sushi falling apart before I even touched it. Their excuse being that they are "short staffed." Where do I start? First the restaurant is still trying to find it's own image. Unfortunately, the decor is reminiscent of Bensi's which then became Baci which then closed being known as the Italian restaurant failure. So going in made our group leery of what we were hoping to enjoy. We sat down and the first thing we noticed was the table being unclean, nothing extreme...just remnants of the previous patrons, i.e. spilled Soy Sauce and some mystery juice that we avoided. After a few moments, our waiter came out and explained how the menu works. We were told that the all-you-can-eat was required for the entire table. RED FLAG! We had one member in our group that didn't want that much sushi, just a single roll and an appetizer at most. Well that created chaos with the waiter not knowing what to do so he ended up tracking down one manager who in turn tracked down another individual (the owner we think). We were told that everyone had to order the same, meaning if one ordered the all-you-can-eat selection, EVERYONE had to, or vice-versa...if one ordered the al-a-carte, everyone had to. Eventually the head manager/owner we believe gave us a coupon that was BOGO 50%off. Not a bad deal considering, so in the end, our one guest that wanted al-a-carte ended up paying half for their meal. After taking some time to breathe from the confusion, we ordered our appetizers and our first main course selection. The appetizers were mediocre at best. The spring rolls were not hand-made but were frozen and reheated..similar to what you buy in the grocery store. The Gyoza dumplings were overdone leaving an odd potato-chip taste in your mouth. The edamame was okay...a bit on the salty side for our taste and the Miso soup was satisfactory. Our first round of sushi arrived and well let's just say it's not what the photos on the menu showed to include the ginger not being pickled but rather plain and bland. The rolls were loose and falling apart. But something more than that was disturbing...the sushi was warm....I mean WARM. As a matter of fact...EVERYTHING was warm. The rice seemed to be overcooked, the fish was warm, the little slivers of avocado our rolls were to have was wilted and the sauces that were drizzled over the rolls were not that tasty. We thought, okay maybe we just got a bad roll because the place was packed and the kitchen staff was being worked-over. So opting to give the place another chance, we ordered a second round of sushi hoping for something better...NOPE! The output was the same but this time, one of our guests immediately got sick after eating just one slice of sushi and had to make a quick retreat to the restroom. Typically sushi is made in front of the customers or in close proximity. Contrary to what Sushi King's web-site background photo shows...EVERYTHING is made in the back kitchen where who knows what quality of food is being handled. For certain, if you want something warm, you're not going to be disappointed. $17.99 for all-you-can-eat sushi, not including drinks sounds like a deal but it's really not. There should never be a place that serves fast-food sushi but this place does. I would caution anyone who truly enjoys sushi to avoid this place. It's not worth the hassle of trying to figure out the menu, being forced to buy something you don't want, eating warm fish and then watching one of your guests get sick. I was here last night and I will admit that it is very good for Hampton. I usually go to the one in Newport News, even though it's farther away, but my friends wanted to go there but it ended up working out. The quality was very good and pleased my standards. The only thing that irked me was that some of the things were in the buffet area that the other ones don't have. The buffet had my personal favorite, salmon bowl which is spicy crabmeat filling wrapped in salmon, sashimi salad, avocado salad, yellowtail , peppered tuna and icecream. I'm bummed that I found that it was there last, after I had just eaten a lot. I have eaten here 2x and the service was okay drinks were awful and the food was just okay. I went in there tonight because I needed to use the restroom. Now I know most places you need to be a customer and knowing that I told my daughter to wait for me in the entryway. My plan was to take a quick shopping break and grab a drink, that way I wasn't just using their restroom. While I'm in the restroom 2 of the 3 hostesses standing there doing absolutely nothing started talking loudly about it not being a public restroom and being snotty right in front of my daughter. After my daughter told them about themselves I came out and we left. The two running their mouths had disappeared from the hostess stand. I will not be back at all. Those employees didn't know what my intentions were and they chose to make assumptions. I don't need to spend my hard earned money at a place like that. read more

Went here with my girlfriend the other day for the first time. The food was great! The service was good. They have the whole restraint decorated for Halloween. It was so cool! The price is fantastic. The only thing bad I have to say and it's not really that bad is that they sat us in a huge booth that could have sat at least six people, and it was just the two of us. It's kind of awkward to be on a date at a table that big. I looked around and they don't really have any small tables though. I think that is a little weird to not have any tables for two, but it wasn't a problem I wouldn't take any points off for that, and everything else was great. read more

I went here for the first time with two coworkers on our lunch break. Only one of us ate sushi, so maybe the sushi is better than everything else. I ordered the chicken fried rice, it was a tiny portion and dryyyyy. I enjoyed the gyoza. The wait time between plates (you can't order another plate until you're done with the first) was so long that we only had time for two plates. I didn't try the buffet but it didn't look that enticing. 16$ for two tiny plates of food... pass. The service was fine even if it was slow. Probably won't be back. read more

I was going to put 3 stars, but Gordon made it so much better. I actually almost put 5 stars, but I had to take 1 star off for the trouble in using my gift card. This is actually the second time I tried using it. The first time, I tried it at Monticello; but it was turned down. They said I have to use it where the gift card was bought, because their machine is not reading it. So, I ask the "gifter" where she got the gift card. Hampton. Since we're shopping there already, we decided to try it again. They asked for the card receipt. I don't have it; usually the gift card alone should work. They said they can't read the card, so they asked me to call the "gifter" to confirm. No response. So, they turned it down until Gordon showed up and saved the day. My husband and son have been to the Newport News location several times and really enjoyed it, so when we were near the Hampton location last week, we decided to stop in so that I could try it out. It was around 8:40 when we got there and when I inquired about the ala carte menu,we were told that if any of us wanted to order off of that menu that we would have to sit in the bard area instead of the dining room. Weird. We just opted for AYCE. Business was very slow that time on a Thursday evening and our server was too busy sweeping and cleaning to refill our drinks or check on us. After we ate our initial selection, our server then informed us that if we wanted anything else that we needed to order it right then because the kitchen was closing. It was then 9:09. We each ordered another roll and asked for the check. I assumed that we did not realize when we got were that they were closing so soon and felt bad for coming in right before closing. Then I was irritated that the hostess did not inform us when we got there that they would be closing soon. HOWEVER...once we paid our check and went to the door we saw that they are opened until 10:00. So they were closing the kitchen on an AYCE restaurant 50 minutes before closing but still seating guests at $20 a person for basically two rolls each. We will never go back to that location. we will stick to the Newport News location. read more

Let me start off by saying I've been here 3 times before this last time and was pleased every time. But this time was the WORST. I invited 10 of my friends here for more birthday dinner because the food and service had always been good until this time. One person got everything they ordered, 2 others got some of what they ordered, and 4 of us got NOTHING, even though it was my birthday!. We waited over an hour and a half before we got the manager, who basically said it's our fault for bringing such a big party, but we made reservations!!!! Had lunch at 1:00 our hostess was completely cold when we ask for a booth she sat us at one that had no utensils, there booths look horrible seat was torn. Our waiter got another family's order before ours he didn't even ex knowledge us until after I said something. My shrimp hibachi was cold our food took forever and as we left we noticed all employees looked mad no one bid us farwell even the manager looked mad as we left!!!! I came to this place when it first opened and was able to order rolls (not under all you can eat) when I dined in. Now if you only want two rolls they do not allow for you to dine in. Kind of disappointing and rude. Not allowing me to eat in your establishment if I know I don't eat enough sushi to fulfill the "all you can eat" price is crazy.
