I've put off this review for far too long, but now I'm finally comfortable putting my thoughts into words: Sushi King. is. incredible. I've heard a lot of complaints about service over the months (and years), but after going one Thursday evening with two close friends, I have to truly say there was not a single flaw I could find in the entire evening. I ordered the sushi deluxe combination platter and my other friends ordered two rolls each, and they all came out probably within 20 minutes of ordering them - something I would expect from any sushi restaurant. Much to my amazement, the fish cuts were uncanny. So silky smooth and so finely sliced, each over a perfectly shaped clump of seasoned sushi rice. My mouth was watering before I even took the first bite. Each maki roll was no different - chock-full of fish, tightly wound, seasoned amazingly well with wasabi and rice vinegar, and hence explosively flavorful. What was perhaps the most amazing part of the evening though was that the pickled ginger and wasabi that usually come with sushi did not taste like they were out of a jar. They almost tasted as if the owners MADE IT THEMSELVES. Sweet Lord in Heaven, it was divine. The wasabi had more than that classic green horseradish punch to your sinuses, tasting as if it might've legitimately come from a real wasabi root. This couple knows what they're doing, and if you manage to make it out on a non-crowded evening, you're in for a fish experience of a lifetime. Once you experience a night out here even once, I'd have to believe you'll back for years to come. read more

One of my top spots for sushi in Rochester... well Greater Rochester since it's in Penfield. You'll miss it if you're not looking, it's tucked away on the corner of Penfield Rd & Five Mile Line. I usually enter the parking lot where Guida's is. The lot is behind those shops. The dining area is pretty tight seating about 30 people total. Every time I've been in, the dining room has been slow, but take out orders are in and out regularly. I've done both. The whole process is a tad slow, but considering the husband and wife are manning the sushi making, it'll take a bit of time so be patient. The daughter is often helping out, waiting on tables. She seems like she's at the angsty teen stage and doesn't smile much. I probably wouldn't be either if I had to work instead of hang with friends. Again, take that with a grain of salt and speak up if you need something. They won't dote on you. That all fades away when you take your first bite of sushi. It's some of the freshest I've tasted and the rolls are super creative. This is like raw fish heaven. Avoid if you're an Americanized sushi lover. You'll find rolls topped with fresh peppered tuna, fish roe, seaweed, etc. I am a cautionary eater sometimes getting freaked out by the ingredients listed in my food, but here, I ignore it and just order based on the core things I like in sushi: salmon, yellowtail, and tuna. I highly recommend bringing a group of friends/family to eat here so you can order a ton of rolls for sharing. Best way to eat sushi, in my opinion. My Fave Rolls: - The Ruby might be my #1: Spicy tuna w/ scallions, tempura crunchies topped with pepper tuna. The pepper tuna makes this roll. - Sunshine roll: A close 2nd. Simple with just a touch of lemon - just how I love my fish prepared. It was a wonderous realization: order sushi that's prepared with lemon. Mind. Blown. Topped with salmon too. - Hot lover: Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado w/ chef's special sauce. Plus it's presented like little hearts on the plate. Aw. - Volcano: avocado and cucumber topped with roasted sea scallop and crabmeat. All in all, hefty portions and fresh fish. It's a win! read more

We waited an hour to get our food at 8ish on a Thursday night. There were only 3-4 other tables. We waited 30 min to get our waters. We did get a peace offering of free miso soup and salad somewhere after the 45 minute mark though. There were about 3 people also waiting for take out orders when we walked in, and I don't think they left until about 30-40 minutes after we sat down. I overheard one guy say he ordered over the phone at 6:30, arrived at 7:30 and still was waiting. But the food was well worth the wait. I don't think he left until 8:30. Our waitress looked like she had the flu and needed to be at home in bed. Her upper respiratory symptoms didn't really give us a lot of confidence in eating our food... But after an hour of waiting I'm pretty sure we were so hungry that we probably would have eaten stuff off the floor. I feel bad because she's probably the daughter of the family who owns this place and trying to do the best she can...but still. :/ Now the sushi was actually pretty good. Freshly made to order and decent sized portions. I guess just don't come here if you're starving, or come when they only have 1-2 other tables. Either way I'll still be back, but next time I'm bringing something to munch on while I wait. I have to admit, the sushi was great but over all NOT WORTH the terrible customer service and environment. Two of us came in for sushi at 4:30 on a Wednesday because we were in a rush to get to the airport. We had about an hour to eat and there was no one, literally no one else in the restaurant. There were five people working but it took them painfully long to bring us menus and when they finally did, they slammed them down and did not ask if we wanted drinks. One of the waitresses was carrying a baby around who was screaming at the top of it's lungs. When we finally ordered our sushi I told them we were in a rush, but the sushi took 45 minutes and I eventually had to tell them to put it in a to-go box so we could eat it in the car. I had high expectations for this place but will never eat in restaurant again. Order take out if you ever want to try this sushi! read more

(It should really be 3.5 stars) Sushi King came recommended by some of my most trusted Yelping friends. So, Greg and I ventured out there last weekend (mostly because we really didn't want to deal with the insanity of the Park Ave fest). We parked in the back so we came in from a less flattering entrance. We were confused as we were expecting a much bigger seating area. There are about 3 4-tops and 4 2-tops. There were 2-3 people waiting for takeout so Sushi King has a following outside of Yelp! One of the available tables was not cleaned and the sight of the dirty dishes turned my stomach a little. That along with the dimly lit space made me silently hope Christopher and Hope wouldn't lead me astray! Our server (who was almost definitely the owner's teenage daughter) was curt, quiet and very unwelcoming. She barely choked out answers and didn't crack a smile. Guessing Dad made her work on a Sat night and she was sulking. This didn't exactly set a great tone for our meal. We ordered the "porky pine" appetizer ($2 - imitation crab salad mixed with seaweed on top of cucumber ), Spicy Crunch Hamachi roll, Volcano roll, Candy Cane roll and Penfield roll. I also got an order of salmon sashimi. After a really long wait, the food arrived (during which our server didn't really stop by. We did see her taking orders from a party of 2 that arrived after us and they were just as surprised by how curt she was). Well, I should have known better than to doubt Hope and Christopher. The fish was some of the freshest I have had in Rochester. The sashimi was cut a little thick for my liking but it was definitely a generous 3 slices of top quality salmon for $5.50. The Volcano roll was good but the crispies seemed a little greasier than normal. The Penfield roll however was freaking delicious. I could see myself driving back here for just that roll. The Candy Cane roll was no slacker either. I loved the seared peppered tuna draped on top. I actually just want a plate of that tuna over rice. The Porky Pine was surprisingly fresh tasting despite the seaweed being mixed in - it was a little briny and not too mayo-y. It took forever for us to get our check. Even though G was still hungry, we decided we didn't want to wait 45m for another roll so we ended up picking up takeout for him from another place. Will I come back to Sushi King? That depends on whether I feel like driving to Penfield. If not, Shema is an acceptable substitute given how close it is and how great the service is (but I will admit the fish is a little fresher at Sushi King). Also, I will only be doing takeout (unless it is during the school year on a weekday lunch, meaning someone besides the grumpy daughter will be taking orders). If I lived close by, I would definitely come by more often. They should consider taking over California Rollin'! Service (unless you are a table of teenage boys...which is the only time I saw our server smile and be nice). They also REALLY need to clean tables much faster. Having been here twice now, I can honestly say that this is my new favorite place for sushi in the Rochester area. The freshness, the taste, the quality, and service were all spot on. The next time you're debating on where to go for sushi, check this place out. You will not be disappointed! Service - I've read several reviews here where people had issues with their service. Both times I came here were on Saturday afternoons. Each time I had the same waitress and each time she did a great job of not making us feel rushed. She also made it a point to keep our glasses of water full and we never had an issue getting her attention when we needed her. Overall I can't complain about the service at all. Food - this is the tastiest sushi I've had around here. So far I've had the salmon avocado roll, crunchy spicy tuna roll, yellow tail scallion roll, fantastic roll, and yankee roll and I loved each one of them. I'm a sushi fanatic, so believe me when I tell you that this place is GOOD. I've searched high and low for a sushi joint in Rochester I can frequent and this is it! Likely the best in Rochester (Shiki's is also good, but Sushi King has a lot more variety). The fish is fresh, the rolls are creative, and the presentation is beautiful. Service is on the slow side, and it's a bit frustrating that your order and your friend's order likely won't come out at the same time. Their rolls are a bit heavy on the Spicy X side. I've tried: The Naruto - this roll has got to be the healthiest thing ever. literally just slices of fish wrapped in cucumber. Delicious and it blows my mind how they got the cucumber like that. Dragon Roll - Eel and avocado, and delicious! Salmon Lover's Roll - I was a bit hesitant to order this because it contains smoked salmon, which can often be overpowering in sushi. Was pleasantly surprised! Beef Negemaki - 6 small bite-sized pieces of beef wrapped around scallions. I'd skip it. The weekday lunch specials look like a really good deal (3 rolls , soup, salad for $11). There's parking available, but make sure to use the right entrance and park by it. This is the best and most creative sushi I've ever had in the Rochester area yet. I need to visit again to really give this place five stars, but I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. Certainly a family-run business, this place does major business in the take out world. Park off of Five Mile Line Rd - the parking lot entrance is off of there...much easier than trying to turn off of Penfield Rd. We started with miso soups. Pretty standard, nothing special. We did get an amazing complimentary salmon and teriyaki salad that was nothing short of delicious. The plain sushi yellowtail and salmon were fresh...melt in your mouth...and the chef gave us an extra piece of salmon on the house! We tried the volcano roll which I wouldn't have chosen on my own, but who am I to cross Marissa and Jeff (two of my favorite yelpers!)?! It was one of the best sushi choices I've made in Rochester. The roasted scallops, crabmeat, jalapeno and chef's special sauce with crispies topping the roll were amazing. And the spicy tuna roll was fresh. The rice was room temperature and of perfect consistency. I loved that. I hate cold rice. I couldn't believe the understated, fresh and comforting flavors. Sushi King impressed and delighted me on many levels. There are a few other sushi places in the Rochester burbs I still want to check out, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I enjoyed this far more than Shiki, my previous Rochester fave. This place reminded me of the sushi I've had in Tokyo, and that's something that tugs on my heart strings. A friend referred to Sushi King as one of the best sushi spots around town and I have to say...I 100% agree! We ordered the Hot lover, Sweet Heart roll and the combo number 5. The combo included a spicy tuna, spicy salmon and spicy shrimp along with a soup and salad for only $15...not only an incredible deal but also incredibly delicious! The sweet heart roll had salmon and was topped with a spicy chili sauce which we enjoyed. The game changer for me though was hands down the Hot Lover roll! I have been to Sushi King about a dozen times for both dine in and pick up. Though it's always been on the slower side, the freshness of the rolls have made it worth it. I ordered for pick up yesterday through their website like I have previously. Although their website gives a half hour pick up time, my previous experiences have taught me that they take closer to an hour. When I arrived to pick up the food an hour after I ordered, they hadn't even started preparing the order. I asked how long it would be and one of the waiters said he honestly didn't know because they had gotten a big order at one of their dine in tables. No apology, no discount, absolutely nothing. It seems appropriate that this is my first Yelp review, since we found Sushi King through the app a few years ago. SK isn't just our favorite spot for sushi, it's one of our most favorite restaurants. The sushi, raw and cooked, is delicious. The other night we decided that our favorite combo of rolls is Sweet Potato Tempura, Salmon Lover, Fire Dragon, Orchid, and Kakachi Special...although, we've tried every specialty roll on the menu and they are all really good. Please, only visit this special spot when you have time for a leisurely dining experience...this is a family-run restaurant and the rolls are made to order. I read reviews and saw that the service is very slow in there, which I was expecting, but honestly, i went in with a party of 12 and the service was pretty good. No matter where you go when you have sushi you are going to wait. they are making everything to order. a few rolls that were my fav were the volcano roll, the fantastic roll, the spicy and spicy and there was one that was heart shaped. Prices very reasonable , and the menu has a lot of interesting looking items to try. The only "negative" was the wait time. It took about 30 minutes for two items. There was a larger party of about 10 people, which probably explains. I was not in a huge rush so no worries. I will definitely be returning! read more

We made reservations for 6:30pm on a Friday and arrived early at 6:20pm and were seated right away. Mind you, this 8-10 table restaurant was packed and could not fit any more. We sat down, and perhaps 10 minutes past by before our drink order was taken. After having a good look at how this restaurant operates, I noticed there are 2 sushi chefs, and practically one waitress. I am a waiter, and I know the feeling of overwhelm and panic when busy. I can clearly see she was overwhelmed with the restaurant packed, taking orders, bringing orders, taking calls, cashiering, doing take-out. I completely understand if the wait was a bit longer than I anticipated so I put that in the back of my mind. We ordered 3 special raw rolls (Diamond, Hot Lover Roll, and Manhattan), and a plate of nigiri sushi. The rolls were spectacular, delicious, and beautifully presented. Lots of flavour and fresh fish were used. As for the nigiri, I personally would have preferred thicker slices of fish and larger rice beneath, but that's just my preference. Everything is reasonably priced, and we left satisfied. I want to thank Rowland (Waitress) for the great job she did. Don't come here if you don't have 2.5 hours to spend at dinner. Two of us came in on a Tuesday. There was one table waiting for a check and one with 2 people dining in. Other tables were covered in dirty dishes. Our table wasn't wiped down well at all. We were given water and had to wait a bit to put in an order for the Gyoza and 3 rolls. We waited a half hour for the gyoza, which was decent but not super flavorful. We then waited over an hour for the 3 rolls to come out. I had to get up and ask the server at the register when our food was coming. She said "they're plating it right now" 10 minutes later we get one, waited a bit for the second, then 10 minutes after we get the third. There wasn't acknowledgement or apology for having to wait forever. Unless they were doing take out orders, which other reviews say takes forever, I don't know what was going on. The other table of 2 was on the same slow track as us. We ordered the Jaguar, Alaska Beauty and Spicy Crunch Salmon. The Jaguar was so large it's impossible to eat, let alone absolutely steaming hot and I burned my mouth. They were all just decent. We couldn't wait to get out of there, thinking a casual spot for dinner would only take an hour. The restaurant is very, very plain and leaves lots to be desired. read more

The squid appetizer was bad. It tasted like it was cooked in rancid oil. They should seriously get rid of this appetizer as opposed to fixing it because they clearly don't understand the medium. We ordered the sushi sashimi for two which was excellent. All the fish tasted fresh and the wasabi was fiery hot. The service was okay. It seems all sushi restaurants are slow. This place actually had the owners infant children there and they were acting like 2 year old kids which was extremely annoying. If you want to dine while listening to a two year old cry and complain, go here for dinner. I'm going to look elsewhere for sushi. Yes, our group of four waited just over 2 hours to receive our first roll. Yes, we were initially frustrated that we had reached the two hour mark of our evening. But...when we figured out that she provided slow service, we each ordered two drinks and a pitcher of water so she had one less table to worry about. When we realized the food was going to be slow, we grabbed a piece of candy from their dish. From there, we just sat and talked and laughed about the service. No need to get upset. Especially because we had read about the slow service...very helpful reviews here! The only roll I remember ordering was the volcano roll and I'll agree with everyone else...fantastic! Moved to Webster almost 2 years ago and this is my favorite place to grab sushi in the Rochester area. For the prices and taste, you get really great food. I've tried other sushi places like Sakura Home, Sogo, Shogun, etc. but I feel you really get the most value here. You get a choice of 2 entrees for the dinner bento which is a lot of food for the price. All the sushi rolls are really yummy--I recommend the Kakachi Special and Fantastic rolls. Lunch bentos are really good also but they only offer a single entree choice for that. The only downside to this place is that since it is family owned, the food can take a while to come out (if you order takeout, add an extra 10-15 mins to whatever they tell you). It is well worth it though and the owners are super nice. Highly recommend! read more

This tale is of Sushi King and their Sushi Prince. Yes, there is a Prince involved in this story. Upon entering Sushi King I heard the faint sound of crying. Looking around the restaurant I saw no children and was alarmed that there was a baby hidden somewhere in the walls. I was quickly informed by my friends(who arrived before me) that the owners have their baby just walking around the restaurant. We then decided to appropriately title him the Sushi Prince. Many laughs were had each time he cried or awkwardly made noise behind the counter. What does this have to do with the review, you ask? Absolutely nothing. Carry on. It's rare that poor, slow service can be overlooked on the sole merit of the food. This is one of those exceptions, though. We were sitting around waiting for our food for nearly 10 minutes before realizing that we had only had a drink order and the waitress never came back. After realizing this we had to wait quite a while to actually receive our food. However, once the food actually came is was as if the worry rushed from my body and I was in a state of sushi zen. Yes, that sounds utterly ridiculous but you weren't there so shut up. We ordered a smorgasbord of sushi that 3 people couldn't possibly eat, but somehow I managed to power through that feeling to eat each and every piece. We had the sushi dinner for 2(great price for home much you get), the Ruby roll, a California roll, and a Yellowtail appetizer. Each bite was more delicious than the previous one. The sushi was cut much larger than I am used to which means you get even more value in each serving. Like I mentioned above, it's rare that poor service can just be set aside but none of the members of our party really cared when the bill came. The food was truly delicious enough and lived up to all the hype it received on Yelp. I will happily come back here any time and visit the Sushi King and its Sushi Prince. just please don't keep me waiting, I really want your delicious food. read more
