Perhaps we ordered the wrong thing or perhaps they had an off day? I was craving for sushi while in the area and Yelp landed me here. We ordered a few rolls to go including shrimp tempura roll, avocado roll, salmon and the tuna roll, all with purple rice. And honestly It was all very disappointing. Tried out this place for the first time last week. We were greeted very warmly from the moment we walked in. Sat at the bar and ordered a few rolls. We were given a few complimentary bites which were delish! I wish I could remember what they were. Had my first ever ramune here. Was very pleased, as I thought they were going to be very sugary and sweet. The fish and rolls were very fresh and prepared perfectly. This is a place I will probably be returning to as the overall experience was very good. The staff was super welcoming and friendly from beginning to end. Ate at Sushi Koshi on Wednesday morning to celebrate my birthday! It was my first time here, and I absolutely loved it. We sat outside on a beautiful day, and the staff was kind enough to bring a bigger table to accommodate the three of us. The food was DELICIOUS. We got shrimp shumai as a starter. My brother got three specialty rolls, including the Sushi Koshi roll (which was his favorite). My friend Tara got Chirashi and I had an eel and avocado roll, Philadelphia roll, and salmon nigiri a la carte. The quality of the food was incredibly high and the lunch prices were so reasonable! For dessert we had strawberry and Mochi ice cream, the ice cream wafer sandwich, and a bit of chocolate cake. June was our server and he was so friendly and helpful! Their food is great. The only downside is that they pick and choose when to deliver depending on how busy they are. They lead you to door dash which doesn't have everything on the menu like they have on their website. So if you want to pay $5.99 on door dash then go ahead. Other than that I can't complain. I love this place. I come here whenever I had a free day off from work for lunch and it's wonderful. I'm a vegan and they have a nice selection of veggie rolls. Very good local sushi spot. It's small so it can get packed on dinner nights, its also right next to the train station so a lot of people just get food on their way home from here. its BYOB and there is a liquor store next door. Food is very good, I am a fan of the black rice which also adds to the presentation of the food. The food is always fresh here and the service is attentive. This place right here.... is very friendly and acomodating. My husband and I usually come here for lunch. The black rice sushi is the best. Fun fact: the black rice or a.k.a forbidden rice has the highest antioxidants of any rice, more protein, fiber and iron. Also only eaten by emperors in the ancient times. Those days are over! Now everyone gets to enjoy the benefits and savor this delicious rice. I try to have something New every time I come here. I tried their fried rice and it was very good. Cons: Cold, small, nothing too exciting about the food, not much dessert, metered parking (come after 6 they're usually free) Kani Salad was pretty skimp and barely had any kani, mostly lettuce with a bit of a spice to it. I would call Sushi Koshi the General Tso of sushi. Many of their special rolls are covered in some sort of sweet sauce and a tempura'd item is added within. The essence of simple raw fish is lost. That being said, it can be tasty and the fish is fresh, however it becomes overwhelming if I eat too much. Next time I would stick to the more traditional rolls/sashimi and order only one sweetened roll. What sets them apart is the mixed rice option. Instead of plain ol' white rice you can order your roll with white/brown/black rice. The texture is a tiny bit al dente and the taste is grainier which I actually liked. The menu also offers Korean food i.e. Bibimbap, bulgogi fried rice. The woman who runs the restaurant is very sweet and provides good customer service. The last time we were there the waiter forgot to denote mixed rice for two of our rolls. We brought this to his attention and the manager came over to tell us they were going to correct the mistake and we can keep what we had too, nice! As far as price, it is moderate. This place is a small cozy sushi bar in Montclair and is BYOB! BYO is always a plus in my book :) When you walk in all the workers greet you with a loud HI! lol its funny but very welcoming. We ordered 4 rolls and share - Shrimp tempura, Philadelphia, crazy roll, Soho roll.... all of them were very well presented and deeeeeelicious.... we all felt like we could go for two more rolls to share so we ordered the Sushi Koshi roll and the Lobster Tail roll... as we waited for these last two rolls the waitress brought us some complimentary Korean Bulgogi for us to try and share which was very kind gesture and speaks volumes of how this place treats their customers. The meat was so juicy and tender... My eyes lit up when the last rolls came out... They just looked wonderful and boy did they tasted just as good. These rolls capped off a great meal. Having read the glowing reviews about this hole in the wall sushi joint, I had high hopes. We booked a reservation for my inlaws who came in from South Carolina and looked forward to a great casual meal. One caveat, there are few cuisines I consider myself to be a purveyor or connoisseur of, but sushi is really one type of food I have a very discerning palette for (we have eaten Japanese and sushi all over the world, and are unafraid of trying everything including blowfish and other delicacies) While the atmosphere is virtually nonexistent, the restaurant appears to be either family owned and operated or run by a nice group of people who do try hard. We arrived and were seated in the back room close to the bathrooms. (not the greatest spot but the place is just lacking in design and layout) Our wine was opened quickly and they offered to refrigerate it in the back-so far so good. The specials didn't really appeal to us so we shared a seaweed salad, a green veggie roll, a few more elaborate sushi rolls, a tuna handroll and a few pieces of sashimi-I ordered uni sushi and a few pieces of hamachi and tuna. No toro that night...disappointing. We asked for extra ginger and low sodium soy. I specified ponzu in lieu of and they accommodated me. During the course of dinner, several gnats or fruit fly-esque bugs kept circling around us. Very unpleasant. As for the sushi, the combination black, brown and purple rice is visually appealing and quite tasty but the rest was down hill. We are not big eaters but the pieces of sashimi, while texturally good and yummy tasting, were quite thin and small. I have also never received such a tiny amount of ginger and an even tinier (pea size) amount of wasabi. We asked for more and they obliged. The rolls were small (which is not necessarily a bad thing) but there was almost no filling amidst all of that rice. The handroll was almost all rice with so little tuna and the maki rolls were so disproportionally filled with the "black" rice. The fish was fresh and tasted fine but overall this was one of the most disappointing sushi places I have been to in a while. Perhaps I should have gone to Aozura or Dai Kichi which are both reliably decent/good. The redeeming thing about this place is the service since they seem to care and aim to please. Sushi Koshi is my go-to place for sashimi in Montclair. The sashimi is typically fresh - not the best I've ever had, but good for its price. Koshi also offers mixed rice in addition to white rice - a plus given the mixed rice's higher nutritional value and better taste. Their sushi rice (plain white rice) isn't so great as it's not properly seasoned and lacks that subtle, vinegar-y kick. I don't eat the rolls at Koshi - if I want rolls I go over to Kim's Sushi in W Orange. However, if I want straight up miso soup, fish and a bowl of rice, Koshi is my choice given its location and less waiting time. The staff is very friendly and pleasant. read more

I miss the fresh and best quality sashimi so much me and my hubby make a trip all the way to NJ once in a while just to taste his sashimi. The rolls are always special and the special sushi and sashimi salad are just awesome. we ask for special sashimi course for 2 and we are good to go. dish after a dish is just amazing and yummy.
