We live nearby, and went in a week ago. The previous place that was in that location was terrible, but I had read reviews on Sushi Kuchi, and thought we'd give it a try. We were very pleasantly surprised! They had a lot of rolls which are "1/2 priced" and tried a couple. Both were excellent! We ordered a few things- one was the Tiger Roll. The others I swore I would remember the name of.......... but don't. I thought everything we got was delicious. One thing that can make or break sushi places are the sushi chefs. We sat at the sushi bar, and the guy taking care of us was friendly and helpful. I was really impressed that whenever someone came in that they had seen before, it seemed like everyone who worked there would call out to and greet like family. We got there a bit early for dinner- probably right after 6. It was almost empty when we walked in. When we got up to leave, we were surprised to see almost every seat in the place filled. To walk out of a sushi restaurant full, on about $30.00 is amazing! We were impressed and will be back! read more

What can I say sushi is my favorite food like ever and this place ha of course it exceeded my expectations. The staff welcomed me as I walk in and I start to smell um not sure what it was but it started digestion for me. I ordered the house special Crispy Rice which was amazing 500/1. We came here based on a friend's recommendation, and we're glad we did! The sushi was delicious, service was good, and the ambience is spot-on (not too fancy, but not too casual... I know sometimes Carlsbad struggles to find that balance, but this place hits the mark). Sushi Kuchi is hopping - busy, but we didn't have to wait to get a table. I would give this 5 stars except I feel like - for as many options as are on the menu - the menu lacks variety. There is imitation crab in almost every roll. (Since I'm gluten-free, I requested real crab instead, and they were willing to comply. But of course it costs extra.) Also, it seemed like every roll arrived to our table fried; but we didn't realize the rolls we were ordering were all fried. Thinking back, the 3 rolls I noticed that didn't have imitation crab (Lips, Rose, and Angel) were not fried... so I'll plan to order those next time, and see how their raw sushi is. Also, we only ordered 4 rolls, but we received 5. Since we didn't know what they were bringing us (we couldn't remember the names of what we'd ordered, and since it was our first time we didn't know what the rolls we ordered looked like), we accepted them... until the 5th one arrived, and we insisted we didn't order it, and they insisted we did. Thank goodness it was on the 1/2 price list (so it was only $8 instead of $15), and we were hungry. Speaking of 1/2 price... there's an entire menu of 1/2 price sushi. I was confused, so I'll fill you in - the menu says "Half Price", and lists prices (ie: $15)... but when you get your bill, it'll be $7.50. (I wasn't sure if $15 was the 1/2 price, so I was a bit nervous to order.) They also have another part of the menu that is not 1/2 price. So, ok. Regardless of the 1/2 or the full price, I felt like they were good size rolls, and that we didn't over-pay for our food (besides receiving/paying for an extra roll we didn't order). We'll definitely come back! Now that we know how to navigate the menu, we'll order more smartly, and we'll double check with our server to make sure that what we're ordering won't be fried (since we prefer raw sushi). read more

We came here after a baseball game today as our first choice (Rudy's) was closed for Labor Day. I wasn't too hungry so I ordered a Tiger Roll and Bulgogi bowl for Sophia and Edamame to start. The Edamame was just as Edamame. Nothing too special. The Bulgogi on the other hand was delicious. The meat was well marinated and it's a good portion for Sophia that we were able to have leftovers. The Tiger Roll was extraordinary. There are places that are hit and miss especially for those staple rolls that I normally get. I'm thankful that I picked this Roll as everything about it was just delicious. I wanted to order another Roll - Rainbow but I'll save that for another time. I highly recommend this place as they have decent prices for their sushi and if it's your birthday, you may get a birthday song and a free tempura ice cream. I'm definitely coming here again. Love having this local in our neighborhood for a sushi/Korean fix. Probably not the best quality food for certain dishes. I've been really disappointed with entrees, the steak or chicken was definitely previously frozen not fresh. Stay away from those. The Korean tofu soup is pretty good. A couple times it wasn't hot enough to cook the egg so we had them take it back to warm up a bit. The sushi is all pretty yummy too. Good fun family atmosphere. Came here for Dinner with friends after a long day at the Reggie Bush Celebrity Golf tournament. They swear it's one of the best sushi places, so of course we had to try for ourselves. And they were right, WE LOVED IT. From the ambience to the staffs and they do this awesome birthday song with punk rock hair wigs and music, it's so funny. Our soon to be 15 yr old son was such a great sport putting on the birthday hat and laughing so hard, it was priceless... Now for the sushi, party of 10 we ordered: 2 of everything listed here: Crunch Shrimp Roll, Stuffed Jalapeño roll, Sensual, Caterpillar, Lips, Tiger, Hawaiian, Rainbow, Vegas, Nigiri Salmon Hamachi, Chirashi and of course with a several refreshing Sapporo.. it was all delicious and we will be back... want to go for lunch and try other stuff like Bulgogi, Udon, Bento Plates and Macaroon ice cream and etc lol. Smaller hidden joint in a strip mall area. Definitely have a lot of sale rolls and that's nice when you're trying to have a quick lunch without blowing the bank. The rolls are fairly large. I prefer small, bite size rolls but to each their own. My SO prefers large rolls so he loved it. Service is a bit slow but I don't mind it considering I like to talk between rolls. We went here on. Saturday afternoon. It was pretty slow inside and only about five tables had people. The two servers took FOREVER to take our order, being our food and ultimately the check. Sushi Kuchi serves rolls with imitation crab. Every single roll we ordered came with this. It was quite disappointing. Service was poor we tipped only 10% and only do that if the service is bad. We came for lunch and it was so so at best. We had a roll of sushi, Katsu Don and soft tofu stew. The Sushi and Katsu Don was decently good but the Tofu stew was not acceptable. When it was brought out, came with an egg and rice. However the tofu stew was barely hot, see some steam coming out... can't cook a raw egg that way. I've been coming here for lunch on a regular bases for a few years. The quality has never faltered. Sometimes there are long waits if you come after 12 but that is mostly due to the high volume of people that come here to satisfy their sushi cravings. The wait doesn't bother me but if your in a hurry I suggest you come by 11:30. They serve many rolls at 50% off during lunch and they are all great choices. They have some imitation crab on the menu but unlike other low priced sushi places, their discount rolls have a variety of high quality sushi as well. The only way I would take a star off is if they weren't so darn crowded. On a Friday eve, wow. I had never been here before but we decided to pop by on the way to another sushi house in Carlsbad. I really wanted to have a Margarita with my sushi so I wanted to go to a place with a full bar. I decided to be flexible and have cold sake. No disappointment here. They have a couple really nice choices and I was very happy with my dry, cold and slightly sweet blue bottled $16 sake. They have great pricing on hot sake. But no cold sake deals. They also have a 50% off menu with a lot to offer. Probably why this place is so packed. Besides the sushi is fantastic. The service is great too. Although there was a line and a few parties before us, I signed in and said we'd sit anywhere. I prefer the sushi bar always and enjoying interacting with my chef, watching him create and even letting him do what he wishes. The parties before us happened to want tables. Yay for us. We only waited about 10 mins. Seated at the sushi bar, asked for our drink orders right away, got them fairly quickly and ate right away too. I knew if we were stuck at a table with this busy of night and a birthday party table of 10 in, we'd never eat. Our chef was nice and friendly and engaging. Made us incredible rolls, the sashimi was fresh and the rice nicely sticky. I loved everything we had and wouldn't have messed with anything. If you knew me, that's not an easy task either. I have been coming here for years and now that I moved away I still come every time I'm in town. The sushi is so good and finally a place that you can afford to come to all the time. It always has a ton of people enjoying themselves. I love the seaweed salad, large portion. My favorite is the bad boy roll with the lemon on top really pops with the crispy tempora. Sushi was awful. Worst than the food was the service. They hired one white waitress, which is fine because YAY diversity. But she sucked. Didn't check on us once. Instead of handing things to us she just dropped it off at the end of the table where our kids were sitting. The food we ordered wasn't what we thought it was going to be, so bad on us. But most people offer to exchange it. She just looked at us like we were stupid. You ever meet someone who you know just doesn't give shit about her job? Well...hopefully she finds a better one. The fish is fresh and restaurant is authentic Japanese with all or most of the staff native Japanese speakers. The restaurant is in a strip mall, but is off to the side. This place has affordable and delicious sushi. The downfall here is the service. We were seated immediately, however, our drink orders weren't taken for another 20 minutes. We were given menus, so we all decided on what we wanted. We once again, had to flag our waitress down so she could take our order. When we started giving our order, she cut us off and said to write down our order. Ok? Probably would've helped if you told us to do that from the beginning. We started with some spicy garlic edamame, this was some of the best edamame I've ever had. I think they toss the edamame in sweet chili sauce and garlic, it was amazing. We ordered a variety of different rolls, the tiger roll was the best one, our entire table agreed on that. We asked our waitress for some spicy mayo and she barked at us that we could only get 2 per table. I'm telling you, the service is straight up terrible. Cheap, quality, delicious, and fun! My husband and I live in walking distance to a few sushi places in Oceanside (Harney Sushi, Hons, etc) but we drive all the way to Sushi Kuchi whenever we want to indulge. The prices are great! A whole menu of 50% off sushi rolls which are not the typical boring California rolls, but some specialty rolls as well. I can never remember all the unique names of the delicious rolls we have had but pretty much all of them are satisfying! For birthdays they do some really random disco lights with a birthday hat and your favorite stereotypical Asian music. It's like you step into Japan or Korea even for just a few seconds of humiliation for that poor birthday girl or boy. Definitely worth a try!
