My husband and I love Sushi Kuchi. The food is great and the prices are unbeatable. It's no secret this is a popular spot. The place is always packed, and there's always a wait. I would give this place 5 stars, easy! In fact, I probably already have in a previous review. However, we had an issue with payment earlier this week. My husband and I decided to use a $20 Sushi Kuchi gift card toward our dinner. The server came back and said that their new POS system would not allow allow then to run the gift card "at this time, but maybe in a week or two." I'm surprised the manager did not come over to explain the situation in person. I'm equally surprised that the restaurant did not agree to keep my gift card and deduct $20 from my bill. I've worked in food and beverage for several years. I've never heard of a restaurant flat-out denying payment with their very own form of payment - a gift card. Yelpers, riddle me this...is it legal to ask for payment when the gift card is purchased and then deny accepting the gift card when services are rendered? Hmmm. read more

We really like this place. The sensual role is one of the best. The service is usually efficient, enabling us to enjoy elongated time if we like, but also move through a meal pretty quickly if we don't want to spend lots of time. The Star Wars roll, the lips roll, the spicy tuna roll, are all delicious, and the prices are quite reasonable. Very fresh too, which is a must for us with sushi restaurants, but not always easy to find. I usually get a miso soup and a small salad to add to my meal. I can't say enough great things about this place. Service is top notch, polite, and friendly. The prices run from budget to upper medium, and every single roll is great quality. Lots of their rolls are always half off, meaning they undercut most of the local (and in my opinion inferior) sushi restaurants by a full FIFTY PERCENT! There's a wide variety of sushi, acceptable for all palettes, from tempura California rolls (for those who hate raw fish) to sliced, cooked, mostly whole salmon. There's plenty of Japanese entrées like bento boxes and chicken teriyaki, and even some Korean dishes like bulgogi (marinated beef) and bibimbap (stone pot stew). There's also their birthday experience, which could be a deal breaker for some people. They dim the lights, wear silly wigs, and turn on a strobe with loud music to thoroughly embarrass the helpless birthdayee. It's startling the first time it happens to another table, but as a regular, I dorkily clap along to their singing. NEW FAVORITE CHEAP SUSHI PLACE! Seriously, we couldn't believe how cheap our bill was. We ordered 4 rolls and our total was only $24! 2 of the rolls we got were a bit more basic, but you really can't deny that even then, that's super cheap. Quality of the fish was good as well. Service was a little slow though but there were a lot of people there, so I suppose it makes sense. We opted to sit at the bar so we wouldn't have to wait for a table. I really recommend the Sensual Pleasure roll! One thing that I didn't enjoy as much was the fact that when it was someone's birthday, my ears almost started bleeding because they blasted the music so loudly!! And then I felt like I was about to get a seizure from all the strobing lights. It was pretty funny though because the workers dress up as clowns or something goofy and sang really loudly. I generally give places a second chance if my first experience is not a good one. This was the case with Sushi Kuchi - the service was slow the first time I went, and thought maybe they just got caught in a rush or someone called in sick ... so my daughter and I went back. Service was slow - inattentive - again. Moreover, the salmon in the kids salmon bowl was as dry as the Sahara. When I mentioned to the server, the response was simply, "I'm sorry" followed by an awkward few moments of looking at each other ... .but that was it. No, "can I get you another?" "oh, no, I'll take it off your bill." Just a, "I'm sorry." We came here last night for sushi... for the first time in my life I actually left Sushi on the plate and my girlfriend actually got sick. We tried to order a number 4 and a number 10... One of those it was supposed to have salmon on the top. The salmon color was actually pale , almost white... I didn't think about until I realize , " what with this strange taste of this... wait ..hey ,this is supposed to be salmon....(?)"..and immediately pushed it away... yes I should've complain but this service so surly that I just didn't need the hassle... our sever acted as if she was inconvenienced for serving us.... she actually got on me for ordering it by number (you have to fill out a paper spreadsheet order) .. she looked at me with condescending eyes and says "we don't do number we do it by name"... even though they're clearly marked by numbers...I nicknamed her Rosetta Stone ...she had a transcribe the numbers on menus to the name on the separate paper menu that we incorrectly filled out ... (also she had an expression of stone) .. she "had to" transcribe and filled out " for" us with disdain... I honestly wish she would've kicked us out which would have done is both good "no sushi for you...and you get an F- for filling out your order wrong!..." Absolute worst service ever... she kind of walk by and slid out orders on the far side of the table and kept walking.... I could keep on going, but it be more of the same... I was highly disappointed in my recent visit. I have just experienced racism at it's finest. I've visited the establishment before and never received this type of service as I did today. First off, they got my drinks incorrect, which sometimes happened. The kids drink was in the adult glass, the adults drink was in a kids glass, which sometimes happen; but then, we waited over 15min and our server never came to our table. I asked a waiter who walked by if she was our waiter or if she could get our waiter and she briefly looked around before she said, "I'll be your waiter." We barely received any service before our "true" waiter came back. I had the waiter for ask refills for our drinks and anything else I needed. Then I noticed our waiter literally ask every other table around us if they needed anything else. I was shocked because I expected her to come to our table next but she just walked on by and I had to call for her attention. I told her that I didn't like the way I was being serviced and she tried to act like she didn't understand what I was talking about. She made it seem like she did serve me because she brought out our food. So I asked to speak to the manager and she told me that unfortunately, the manager wasn't in today. I kept trying to explain how I felt in regards to my service and she redirected the conversation for a solution as to what it was that I needed. I told her that I was ready for my check and wanted to order some desert. She told me to write the items with A & B to separate the checks but another guest asked her and she didn't direct them to do that. I was so disturbed that I called the restaurant to speak to the manager. The manager Mike answered the phone. I confirmed with his that he was the manager, i thanked him and hung up. I got up and went over to the manager and told him about my experience but he had the same response she did. They acted like there was nothing wrong with my complaint I was making. His solution was to remove the drink since they got it wrong. But it was the principal that I wanted him to address. At that moment I realized, that they were just racist. They clearly did not care about how they made me feel. There was no empathy shown. So I'll just leave this here to inform the world that this establishment does not serve all customers equality with integrity. If those morales matter to you, I'd recommend looking for a different restaurant to support, because this one doesn't deserve your money. It was the first time I've ever cried because of racism... but then again I've never really experienced racism in San Diego until now. read more
