I came here while on vacation, and I LOVED the food. The restaurant seemed very popular, and I had to wait for about 15 minutes for a table. If you don't want to wait, I suggest coming in for lunch or earlier for dinner. Typically, I'm not a sushi eater (since I don't eat raw fish), so I ordered California rolls and Tofu soup. It was delicious! I think I ate the whole plate of rolls in 5 minutes. The food is also reasonably priced, and the service is amazing. It's also a great place to celebrate your birthday! The birthday song is so good and funny. At first, I had no idea what was going on when the room went all dark and loud music started playing, and then I saw some employees singing some hip sushi birthday song with birthday hats on. Decent quality sushi, great prices for sushi. They have 50% off their sushi rolls all the time, so basically their sushi is always a great price (~$7-8 for a roll). We only ordered sushi here- 6 rolls was a good amount for 3 people. The rolls were a good size and came out pretty quickly. My favorites were sweet Hawaiian and dragon roll. The sweet Hawaiian has shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and crunchies, and the dragon roll had eel, which is one of my favorites. This place has a huge variety of different rolls so there's something here for everyone. One callout is that I think they put a little bit too much of sushi rice in the rolls (rice is cheaper than fish and fills you up quicker), but it's not super noticeable, just on certain rolls like the crunch roll where there weren't too many things going on (meat-wise) and too much rice. After a long flight and hardly anything to eat, I was happy to find Sushi Kuchi right around the corner from my hotel. I completely overindulged, but it was so worth it. The 50% off menu offered more than an abundance of options, and the price didn't do the sushi justice. It was some of the tastiest I've ever had. The service was amazing, and my overall experience was incredible. So good that I went back before my flight out (and even got a roll to go). I got to chat with the waitress for a bit, and to my surprise, she returned to my table with a beautiful planner...a sweet gesture that totally made my trip. We have been getting Sushi from here for a while now and the food is really good. Today we ordered, and the woman on the phone was so rude. We were trying to order Avocado Rolls with cream cheese, which are on the menu and she told us they don't have it. We told the lady we order it all of the time and she told us "well, I don't have a button for it!" She was so rude. When I got there to pick up our food she had our name wrong on the ticket, our phone number wrong and she only gave us 1 order of avocado rolls when we ordered 2. When I told them I needed another Avocado roll she rung me up, and put my order in the back of the line instead of having it expedited. I'm burned out on many of the restaurant options in Carlsbad so I'm always looking for something I haven't tried and if I can find a healthy-ish option that is even better. My latest quest took me to Sushi Kuchi in the Southeast corner of the Poinsettia Village Plaza (shopping center anchored by Ralph's). Here is what I enjoyed about my experience at Sushi Kuchi: -Staff throughout the restaurants hollers welcomes and thank yous to you as you enter and exit. It is overall welcoming and not too obnoxious. The staff is equally attentive to customers in between. I was promptly welcomed and seated upon walking in and a waiter routinely dropped by table. - The sushi menu is nicely prepared with thorough descriptions and photos. I also like that they tell you what is inside the roll v. what is outside the roll. -The sushi was delicious, fresh and beautiful. On this particular occasion I ordered two rolls, not realizing how huge they were. - At $14, the Kuchi Roll was packed full of goodness and was enough for a meal. The inside featured shrimp tempura, cream cheese, snowcrab and avocado. The outside of the roll was wrapped in tuna, krab, more shrimp tempura, more avocado and some ell sauce. Lots of flavors that all went together well. - I also tried the Dragon Roll (krab, eel, smelt row, cucumber and avocado). The Dragon Roll is listed at $15 with 50%. At $7.50 I thought the price was a great but a $15 Dragon Roll would be an overpriced roll in my opinion. The atmosphere at Sushi Kuchi reminds me of Love Boat Sushi but less boisterous. However, I will say that both establishments have a very similar birthday treat. ;-) Overall, Sushi Kuchi was a great experience and I think I'll make it my go-to sushi spot in Carlsbad. read more

First time here as we search for a good sushi place in the Carlsbad area. we had the jalepeno hamachi and sweet Hawaiian role which were both very tasty. We ordered the tornado151, not realizing it was sushi and a floor show as they light it on fire. The show was better than the taste in my book as they used a LOT of mayo. Nice vibe in the place and the chef's were very social. I wasn't overwhelmed and may be back. If you are very particular- this may not be the place for you. I had high hopes for this place based on the Yelp reviews but maybe I should take into consideration the area. I checked out this place for lunch and I should've been tipped off by the fact that the menu had cuisine from all over Asia, including Korean bibimbap and Japanese sushi. Anyway, the majority of the rolls are 50% off all day, which really, does it mean it's really on sale? I ordered several rolls thinking that I was going to be stuffed and have enough to take back home, but they were pretty small and worth the 50% off price. The service, despite the place only having 3-5 tables occupied when I was there, was lackluster at best. The food came out quickly but the staff was not particularly warm or friendly. The spider roll (with soft shell crab) was the smallest spider roll I've ever received in my life, literally. It was probably 4/5 fake crab meat and then the rest was probably a leg or two of the soft-shell crab. Realistically, that was pretty much the composition of all the rolls - 4/5 faux crab meat, 1/5 whatever the signature ingredient is. We recommend starting with the garlic edamame and the Star Wars roll - good flavor combo overall. The two-piece ngiri is alright but not worth it - stick with the rolls. Same goes for the noodle soups.... Fish tastes fresh bit nothing particularly special or outstanding about this place. I don't know why it took me a year to find this place, when it's practically down the street! I really cannot fault anything - even though it was packed both times I went, it was only a short (5 min?) wait, and despite being packed, service was quick and efficient. The fish was all incredibly fresh, the iced green tea the best I've had. My son chose sushi for his last meal before leaving for college the next day, and boy did he load up!...and I didn't go broke! They even had a really yummy 'protein' roll that fit my keto diet. The sashimi salad was huge and could have been my whole meal. Someone else nailed it when they said that this place serves Americanized sushi. Plenty of friend options and the sushi was doused in the sauces. My coworkers love the Star Wars roll and the gyoza. The cheese wontons were literally little cheese-filled versions of the gyoza. Its clean and the servers are nice. They even sell macaron ice creams! The birthday celebration is crazy with the lights and loud music but it definitely gets a laugh out of everyone. Bottom line, decent sushi in North County with nice employees. Well first for a disclaimer... it was Mothers' Day and they were packed. That said, we were sat quickly, but then waited for our waitress for over 10 minutes until I complained to the hostess. Then after taking our order and knowing we were waiting, she then went to the next table THAT HAD JUST SAT DOWN so I had to interrupt her and ask her to submit our order first before taking theirs. This is by far the best sushi place I have been to that has 50% off rolls. I always get the spicy scallop hand roll and the eel avocado cut roll. As far as specialty rolls go, I really like the Tiger Roll, Sensual Pleasure Roll, and Angel Roll. For some reason, I haven't had any fried rolls that I have enjoyed I didn't like the Star Wars, Ninja Roll or Jalapeno Roll. The service can be a little slow, but they are always very nice. The one thing I was very put off by was the baked green mussels. The baked green mussels are amazing at Love Boat, but Sushi Kuchi gave us mussels covered in mayonnaise. I mean there were only a couple open tables so the place was busy but the chefs were machines! Maybe five minutes after we ordered, it was roll after roll! I would really give them 3.5 stars because it's just slightly above average but for the price, it a great value. The restaurant is basically closed inside and they only have a few tables outside, but if you place an order expect to wait 45 minutes to an hour for it, even when there are 5 sushi chefs at the sushi bar! Ridiculous! Waiting 45 minutes for raw fish, they are not even cooking it! I have tried three times to place an order and have had to cancel because of HOW SLUGGISHLY SLOW they are. There are too many great sushi places in the area, so Sushi Kuchi is a bye bye for this costumer, I'd rather drive a bit further and have better quality and not wait for raw fish as if they were out at sea catching it. read more

Excellent food...horrible service. Very slow.. Took 30min to get water & Tea. Probably need about 4 more waiters on a Saturday night. Took about 45 mins for our food to get there. My husband and I just love this place! The prices are reasonable and sushi is so good. They also have the Korean tofu soup which I crave often. I love me some Sushi Kuchi. They have an incredible staff that makes you feel like family. Chris and Mike are amazing sushi chefs and are a pleasure to talk to when sitting at the bar. All the staff are super personable and usually try to get to know you if you're a regular. They have a great variety of rolls with the 50% off in house deal. I love them all. My husband's personal favorite is their Lips Roll. I'm a big fan of Korean food and they have options to fix my cravings considering there aren't really any places in North County. I like their Bi Bim Bop bowl which is the stone pot rice bowl filled with mixed veggies and protein, their Korean ramen (different than your standard Japanese Ramen but I love it), and lastly, their tofu soup bowls are legit as well. My husband liked the Star Wars roll and I liked the Vegas roll. The service however was very slow. My husband had to lock eyes with our server to finally get our check (and we waited about 10-15 minutes after they took our empty plates).
