We went to Sushi Kuma on Thursday and then again on Saturday after playing Pickleball. If you like sushi, the sushi is very very good. I expect if your idea of sushi is giant burrito style sushi, you will be disappointed. Sushi Kuma serves the more traditional style and size of sushi. But, the restaurant's menu has some delicious combinations of ingredients in various sushi rolls, which are 50% off. We had the Serrano, EDH (El Dorado Hills), Oh Yes, and a speciality of the week rolls. The EDH had deep fried soft shell crab, crab meet, salmon, seared tuna, and special sauce. Dinner #2: sushi & sashimi dinner - received 5 pc nigiri w/different sashimi on top of each, 4 pc of tuna on the side, and 8 pc California roll. California roll had NO taste. Salmon nigiri: sashimi was warm to the touch compared with the other nigiris, sashimi was cold to the touch. Miso soup was also luke warm. Dinner #3 (take out): Bento box w/mackerel (salted), salmon (teriyaki), mixed tempura. Mackerel had way too many bones, tasted twangy & fishy tasting (shouldn't be). Salmon WAS NOT coated with teriyaki sauce and VERY MUCH UNDERCOOKED (couldn't be eaten, was thrown away). . Have never had problems like this in the past and after this, will NOT be back! Our suggestion to anyone eating there, check your food before consuming it. Raw fish should NEVER be twangy tasting or have a strong odor to it. This location is so weird. We usually give our business to the Roseville location but being that this one is closer we've given it more than enough chances to redeem themselves. The food is good but the staff is really weird. Every time my husband and I come in someone acts weird towards us. The first time it was awkward and we brushed it off, the second time the Korean girl working had an attitude the whole time and her face just looks like she hates everyone, let alone working there. This time we came in and walked right out. We always sit at the bar and usually we get attitude for our preference but this time when we walked in after being greeted we asked to sit in our usual place at the bar and the gal woking told us no and that the bar is closed... I don't know why it's always an issue to sit there. They definitely do come off as racist towards my husband who is black. Very unwelcoming and weird and will not be back. read more

We decided to eat here for dinner around 6pm on Saturday night because of their sign 'everyday 50% all rolls.' The restaurant was starting to fill up but we were seated right away: There were only 2 servers and I had to call one of them to place an order as the tables were getting full. We ordered california roll, tempura roll, rock n' roll, spicy tuna roll, and maki. The rolls came out pretty quick. The rolls looked and tasted good but they were rather on the smaller size. But nothing beat the price! Even their special rolls are 50% off. I noticed that there were lots of pick up orders on the table near to the sushi bar. Kuma has been pretty consistent over the years- on the whole I recommend them. Just some feedback- they used to have a BBQ albacore that I loved- but last night it was weird. It used to be whole chunks of fresh tuna lightly sauced- last night it was weirdly chopped, almost shredded and heavily sauced. Before I ever order it again ($18) I would ask how they're preparing it, will never order it again if that's how they're going to serve it. I wish I had before and after pictures. read more

3/14/2021: It's been well over one year, since I've inhaled Sushi; after filling my truck with gas at Costco Folsom, I made a beeline for El Dorado Hills Shopping Center purposely heading to Sushi Kama. Why? Please don't inquire the reason for eating Sushi because that's how hankering pangs are; you must satiate those pangs otherwise, the pangs become egregiously annoying! BTW: Sushi Kama Menu now has a QR Code via the front of the menu; I hope you can scan the QR Code from my photo I took. Anyway, I seriously buckled via ordering the Sushi 7 which the Sushi Chef kindly gave me extra Sushi and a large Sushi California Roll which wasn't a California Roll; the Sushi roll had more seafood inside the large roll plus, I buckled ordering the seafood Udon because I just had to eat seafood Udon. Whoa~I must embarrassingly admit my eyes were bigger than my stomach because the Sushi 7 was EPIC while the seafood Udon was so atypical to the seafood Udon I inhaled and was served in San Francisco Japantown AND Shibuya, Tokyo! The seafood Udon had scallops, large prawns, clams, octopus(?), squid(?), oysters, and a plethora of freshly French-cut carrots, chopped broccoli, and other assorted vegetables! Welp~I think Sushi Kama will now be my El Dorado County Sushi Restaurant I'll regularly frequent which will not cost me an airline ticket flying to Shibuya, Tokyo for Sushi-ever! read more

Attention owner please read your latest Yelp reviews!! Unfortunately I'm on the same page when it comes to the reviews on takeout orders. Maybe you would like the customer to open up their containers at your restaurant so you can see disappoint on their face. The man and I have been coming here for 6 years and always had a great experience. I've even felt comfortable with getting my sushi for takeout because it didn't jeopardize sushi size. Now a days if you get sushi to go its a JOKE! Thanks for taking advantage of your loyal customers by serving them half the normal size of a roll. I got the Seafood Udon and a hot sake. The sake was warm rather than hot. The udon was a good size. Soup was tasty. There were two mussels, some oysters, two scallops and vegetables in the udon. The seafood was cooked nicely (not over cooked which I dislike). Scallops were a bit bland. Quantity of noodles was good. Service was fast and very friendly. Sushi Kuma does not disappoint! The food is prepared in a timely manner, ample amount of food and the service has always been friendly and welcome. I normally order the bento box which has always been scrumptious delicious! The tempura is always crispy and not overly oily. Salmon teriyaki moist and never dry. We received our rolls right away and the presentation was excellent. (I wish I would have taken a photo of the table next to ours... They probably had 20 different items and it looked amazing!). They tasted great. Prices were decent as well. We had the Viagra, pier 39, lion king, and Kuma rolls. Lion King and Kuma we're out personal favorites. I ordered DoorDash from this place last night. One and done. I ordered and noticed two things right away. I ordered three rolls and they were haphazardly thrown into a styrofoam takeout container. Three rolls would feed two people at most places but here, it barely fed one. The rolls were small. There wasn't a lot of sauce on the rolls which was a good thing. I want to taste the fish when I pay extra for sushi. One good and one bad. Ok. The deep fried shrimp just took over everything. The breading was so thick. I think someone forgot to tell the breading it is not the star of the dish. I wanted to taste the fish so I pulled it out and tasted its mushy sponginess itself. It had no flavor and a weird texture. Sprouts has better tasting rolls and those are only $5 on Wednesdays. I think I'll stick to the stuff from the Liquor store. Better quality sushi! I jest. Going to stick to Mikuni or Kru. I was told 35minutes and when I arrived at 40 minutes, the server spoke to the kitchen and came to deliver the "it will be another 10 - 15 minutes, would you like to hang out?" message. Not, "We're sorry," or "would you like a seat at the bar for a sip of complimentary sake?" The shop looked "Sunday busy" but not crazy "people waiting out front" busy. I've lived in the area for three years and this is the first time I've tried Sushi Kuma. What a miss on my part. It's tucked away in the back of El Dorado Hills town center and there's not a lot of light on the exterior to draw your attention to this restaurant. Once inside we noticed there were at least 30 people eating on a Sunday night at 6:30pm. This was a good sign that the locals enjoy the restaurant. We ordered side salads, sesame chicken for starters, Sakura roll, Yummy Yummy Roll and Golden gate rolls. The salads came first and they were very basic. Just lettuce but the Japanese mayo dressing was sweet and flavorful. I just wish they would add a tomato or something to the salad. The starter was terrific. Sesame chicken. Most Japanese restaurants deep fry their chicken appetizers with no seasoning and rely on the sauce to flavor the chicken. Not here. Yes seasoned the chicken, fried it in a light batter and then added a sauce. It was perfectly cooked and the sauce was terrific without being too sweet. They us Le chicken thighs so the texture of the chicken was fantastic. The rolls were terrific. The Sakura roll was spicy as advertised and it hit the spot. The yummy yummy was good but it's very large. You will need to cut it in half for a mouthful. My golden gate roll was the perfect size and tastes great. If I could leave zero stars I would because I am honestly shocked that this is the portion size for takeout on the Hawaiian pokey which is $15 for the entrée and when I ordered it in store, I had an actual big portion of it in a bowl but compared to now for the first time doing takeout for this They said that the boss the owner of the store made this for us and this is the actual portion amount for this item and when you go buy it in store the amount you get is actually the wrong amount. The sushi man is supposedly giving you the wrong amount and in this picture this amount you see is actually supposed to be what you get in store as well. They basically told me there's nothing they can do about it. This is the portion size and sorry that I am unhappy about it, but oh well basically suck it up and just eat your food, so again, I am shocked that this is what the owner made and is saying that this is the correct portion which doesn't seem right. And whatever I'm in the store ordering sushi everything is better in store but why is it that take out? Can't be the same experience never returning and I am going to continue getting better portion size and better customer service from umi sushi. read more
