Sushi Makio is the best sushi I have had so far in Kingston. It's good (particularly for the Hudson Valley), but from reading these reviews I'd say it's overrated. I wouldn't recommend coming here expecting to get the same quality of food as at upscale sushi restaurants in New York City, Boston, or LA but the prices are more reasonable and the atmosphere is very casual and friendly. I've been here three times and have tried a variety of rolls but I keep coming back to the sushi dinner. It comes with 9 pieces of sushi, a tuna roll, and miso soup (which is some of the best I've had). Not a bad deal for $24. When my girlfriend and I went there on Valentine's Day the chef made us a heart shaped roll on the house. It was cute and we enjoyed it. From the outside the place blends in with the rest of the stores, but on the inside is a nice, clean, friendly atmosphere that plays music to set just the right environment. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly hostess who then sat us at a clean table for 4. We were served water right away and given warm moist scented hand towels along with the menu. Our order included: Fusion Roll (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, masago), Hotate (scallop), Graffiti Roll (shrimp, tuna, yellowtail, salmon, crab, avocado, cucumber, tobiko), 2 Aoyagi (yellow clam), Tako (octopus), 2 Uni with quail egg, sashimi dinner (15 pieces sashimi of chef's choice), eel avocado roll, Rich and Famous Roll (yellowtail, snow crab salad, masago, scallion, almond flakes, wasabi mayo, spicy mayo), and the spicy yellowtail roll. All of the dishes had great presentation and all of the fish was fresh as can be. The combination of flavors was fantastic and the rolls were of a good size. Some of the rolls might seem pricey, but for the freshness and quality of the fish it is worth it. I would recommend anything that we ha ordered, but especially the Graffiti and the Rich and Famous Roll were deliciously good. If I could I would have ordered everything off the menu so that I could try everything. Tip: make reservation ahead of time as on Friday and Saturday night they will be packed and it will be a wait to get a table since the place is small and intimate. read more

We came on a Sunday night around 8 and were pretty much the only people there. The waiter as very attentive and helped us quickly. We ordered a few rolls and some edamame. Everything was really very delicious. As far as sushi places go, this one is way better than the average. Everything tasted super fresh and of a quality that is higher than the normal places. The spicy salmon I usually get in other places is all mayo and just not spicy, but here it was so flavorful, a real treat! Would definitely come back here again if in the area. read more

This place is the real deal. I have no idea how their various interesting sounding rolls are, because we were there for some serious fish having seen that the menu had some harder to find selections. Everything was top notch quality that you would expect to get in NYC. Some real stand outs were the Toro, Hamachi and Kampachi plus some specials. Ask what they have in because the special fish weren't listed on the menu or a board. Finding decent sushi outside big cities is hard and I have no idea how this place ended up being in a tiny strip mall next to an office park in the outskirts of Kingston but however it happened my stomach is glad. One slight down side, they do use wasabi paste. Perhaps they have fresh grated wasabi on request but we didn't think to ask. We were dining with kids and the kids were treated very well. read more

We saw all the rave reviews when looking for a sushi restaurant in the Hudson Valley and decided to make the 30 minute drive to eat at SushiMakio. We were definitely a bit disappointed. The best thing we ate was the gyoza veggie dumplings. The sushi rice was dense and chewey. Not fluffy and fresh like one would hope. The rolls we ordered were creative, but lacked flavor. We also realized that if you are going to Kingston for a night out, this is not a hopping area. We highly recommend checking out a restaurant down by the water! read more

I was in the vanguard of sushi consumers back in the early 80's and have enjoyed the produce of some of the most renown sushi chefs in the world. Sushi Makio was one of the purest experiences to date. No fancy space, no pomp and circumstance, just really good sushi prepaid by a world class chef. It's great to see a chef with such a love of the fish and not just the presentation. We have eaten twice at this wonderful new sushi restaurant. Both times we had great food and great service. We especially loved the steamed mussels appetizer, the Spanish mackerel (sushi), the baby octopus salad and the cucumber, seaweed and sliced octopus. My partner even braved the uni (sea urchin), which was really fresh and tasty! The less-exotic offerings we tried were also great -- spider roll, yellowtail sushi, tuna sushi, shu mai. The owner is a true culinary artist and a sweet, friendly guy. This restaurant is a terrific addition to Kingston's food scene. We enjoyed sitting at the sushi bar, tasting one thing at a time, and chatting with Makio and the other diners. Definitely five stars; we will be back. We found that whether we were sitting at the bar or at a table, the waiters were attentive and knowledgeable. read more

Truly superior sushi. We used to enjoy Makio's handiwork at Amici Sushi years ago, and are thrilled that he has a new place to showcase his talents! We have been twice in the last three weeks and everything has been delicious, fresh, creative, and beautiful to look at. I am genuinely surprised about the stellar reviews. Yes, the fish was fresh. Yes, the staff are friendly. I have only been there once and ordered three items off the menu which were the special appetizer wasabi gyoza, the graffiti roll, and the alaskan roll, which was pretty standard. Nothing spectacular, and at $8, 25% pricier than an Alaskan roll anywhere else. The Wasabi gyoza were delicious. However, as far as my graffiti roll, for $15, at any of the 4 other sushi options I have here in Kingston, the maki is twice the size. In fact, as I looked around, the magnificently priced rolls were beautiful but not bountiful. Maybe this is but 1 poor example, but I could not imagine everyone in that dining room being pleased with the amount of food they were served for the price they were paying. We had an excellent meal here last year and a good one a few days later. Tonight was a disappointment. Not much flavor to the snap peas, the sashimi & sushi were ok to poor. Supermarket quality. I live near a big fish market and can get extremely fresh hamachi, and the hamachi I had tonight wasn't fresh. Service has always been a bit odd, but they were definitely off tonight. I ordered a drink, which I didn't receive and wasn't billed for. They removed my spoon as I was finishing my soup. It took over 30 minutes just to get the check. Kinda strange to be in such a rush to clear the table, but so slow to get paid. We won't be back. read more

We were in Hudson valley craving legit sushi and did not expect to find anything, but this place popped up on Yelp, and it was wonderful! We especially enjoyed the -very reasonably priced for the quality- toro, wagyu, amberjack, salmon and seared tuna. Also, the chef offered us a delicious, super fresh complementary dish of simple roasted fish with lemon and salt. The sake selection, while fairly limited, is also remarkable. I had the Omakase tasting menu, which I've only had once before at Nobu, and it was as good and quite a bit less expensive. An overall wonderful experience sitting in front of the master, Chef Makio, eating his wildly delicious array of delicacies as he prepared them and passed them to us over the bar. I've eaten here many times and every time has been wonderful. But the Omakase is really the pinnacle. And it must be ordered a day in advance so they can prepare. read more
