    Chicken Teriyaki Dinner Special
    Sean S.

I recently placed a take-out order from Sushi Nishi in Calabasas, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience from start to finish. When I arrived to pick up my food, I politely asked the woman at the front desk if I could get some ginger. She was noticeably rude, never made eye contact, and made the interaction feel uncomfortable. She handed me one tiny portion, and when I asked for a little more, she reluctantly gave me just one extra piece. It was awkward enough that I decided to just pay and leave. Once I got home, I realized there was no ginger included with any of the sushi, so if I hadn't asked, I wouldn't have received any at all. The bag also had no napkins, chopsticks, or even forks -- something you would expect to be standard with a take-out order. As for the food, one of my items was the teriyaki chicken with tempura. The chicken was extremely rubbery and almost inedible. The tempura batter instantly fell off the vegetables, which were still raw inside. The miso soup was bland and didn't even contain any tofu. Between the poor front-desk service, the lack of basic take-out essentials, and the disappointing food quality, I can confidently say there are much better Japanese restaurants in the area for the same price -- with far better service and food. I will not be returning.

Let me tell you something about nishi, it's been my holy grail for over 14 years. I used to live close by, and now I drive from the city at least once a week to curb my craving. The price and quality of fish is unmatched. My go to order is as followed, listen carefully: mushroom miso, Calabasas roll, new nishi roll, rainbow roll, the baby ribs, and sometimes I add Marilyn Mon roll into the mix.

Yum, yum, yum! Fresh fish, left full. Brought an out of town guest along to enjoy and they loved it as well, total win! Not shown is the real crab roll with no mayo, first down and so darn good

Great place for fairly priced, decent eats. Stopped by here last week as we had an hour before our next meeting. I love sushi places that are upfront and honest on their menus that they use "krab" (imitation crab meat) so it saves me the hassle of having to ask this and readjust my order. They do offer real crab for one of their rolls though., I had the miso marinated black cod plate ($27), making it one of the pricier items on the menu, but is my go to for light lunches. While it isn't the most top shelf style I've had, it is still very good, and I finished every morsel on my plate. Normally, miso cod dishes are use a more reduction-style, so it's less saucy, but packs greater flavor. Here, they use a more watered down sauce, and even give you a side of sauce, but you know what? It works! My friend ordered some spicy chicken rice plate, but I didn't love it. Tasted college-level cafeteria style to me. Service is decent, and I'll be happy to pop in here again.

I was surprised to see some reviews saying this places wasn't good since I've always had good experiences. I hesitated going but ended up taking my family there for dinner. We were greeted right when we walked through the door. For a Saturday night we were got a table right away. Our server was very attentive and kept coming back to see if we needed anything or to fill our waters. Put food came out quick and tasted delicious.

Currently my favorite sushi spot. Yummy hand roll is a must. The rams tool, Marylin Mon Roll, and everything here is delicious. The ramen is also super delicious. My toddler loves the ramen noodles.

Happy to have found a new sushi spot that delivers quality sushi and friendly prompt service. I came for lunch on a weekday right at opening and was quickly seated. There was only two tables seated but by the time I left they had developed a nice little crowd, but still had plenty of seating. Seeing how popular they got for an early weekday lunch I could imagine this spot gets traffic on the weekends. Good for them. The restaurant was very clean and spacious. Plenty of tables and openings to sit at the sushi bar. Pro tip for us travelers is that they also have clean restrooms. Score! The service was a solid 10/10. The staff here are super friendly and kind. I was checked up on multiple times throughout my meal in a thoughtful way. Any little thing I needed they were quick to bring me what I needed. While the lunch could have been leisurely, I appreciated that they were prompt and were able to get me in and out as I had limited time for lunch due to traveling. Great people work here who deserve your business. The sushi & my meal were a solid 8/10 rating. Super quality sushi and the freshness was there. I don't typically love when restaurants make rolls with the seaweed on the outside BUT the fish was so fresh that each bite was super tasty and I found I didn't mind the seaweed as much here. I had simple rolls. I ordered a spicy salmon roll which was my favorite as they don't skimp on the fish and spice was mild but flavorful. I also ordered a lunch bento box with teriyaki chicken and a California roll. Simple and not really adventurous choices but I was craving the basics. The California roll was tasty and the teriyaki chicken was well cooked with a tasty sauce, not too thick and had good flavor. The sides were typical for any bento box - miso soup, salad, and rice - nothing special about the sides but fine. A good accompaniment to the main course. Last pro tip: they have the best wasabi here! It had a nice quick and they were generous with the side portion of it. I'm a sucker for good wasabi and had to give them credit. The prices here are middle of the road, not a steal but also not overpriced for the quality and atmosphere. Glad to have found a new sushi spot in Calabasas and I would definitely recommend giving this spot a try next time your in town.

Great service, fresh fish and great ginger (which is huge for me). They had a great menu variety of healthy no rice rolls, to udons and ramens. Their salad options are great too! I appreciate their healthy options at a sushi restaurant. Their crispy onions was one of the best I've ever had!

The electricity was out in part of the city so I looked for another place to eat my lunch. I found Sushi Nishi. Service was good. The menu has a great selection. I had the salmon lunch special. It came with rice, soup and salad. Just the right portion size. The restaurant is large. It has two giant televisions. It is a pretty nice place. Give this place a try. Plenty of parking.

The rice was cold, packed too tightly, and tough, which really hurts the overall experience. A lot of the sushi was also overwhelmed by sauces, which covered up the flavor of the fish instead of highlighting it. Maybe this works if you like heavily dressed rolls, but it is not what I would call great sushi, especially by California standards. The wait was also frustrating, not just because it was long, but because of how poorly it seemed to be managed. It felt like regulars could walk up, say the right thing, and get seated while everyone else just stood around waiting. That kind of thing makes the experience feel pretty lousy. The restaurant itself is packed, loud, and cramped. The tables are tiny, and there are not many of them, so it is hardly a pleasant dinner experience. To me, this place feels more driven by hype, social media, and people following the crowd than by truly excellent sushi. I wanted to like it, but based on this visit, I would not go back.

There were six of us, including two young children, so we intentionally booked an early dinner. Even with a reservation, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated. That wasn't a big deal. The bigger issue was the pace of the meal. We didn't receive our first appetizer until around 6:00 PM, and our entrees didn't arrive until about 6:20 PM. By then, the kids were definitely getting hungry. The good news is that the food was worth the wait. Between the six of us, we sampled everything from seafood and sushi to salads, tacos, vegetables, and desserts. Every dish was a hit. The birthday chocolate cake was a nice touch, and the bread pudding and butter cake were a great way to end the evening. Our server was friendly and did everything possible to make sure we had a good experience. As the restaurant filled up, though, it became obvious they simply didn't have enough staff to keep up with the crowd. We spent about two hours at dinner, and much of that time was waiting for food to arrive. Will we go back? Probably. Next time, though, I'll plan on a leisurely evening rather than a quick dinner, even with an early reservation. I think with a little rehearsal of how they want to approach dinner service (mainly timing, introduction and flow) would provide some more confidence and better execution of the experience they clearly wished to impart. The food was fantastic, and truly felt like a journey. Everything is prepared in house, and of the best quality. My husband and I are sure to be thinking about our experience here for a long time, and will be recommending others to come check it out. Note: If an omakase experience is not in your budget, they also offer ala carte items.
