    Chicken Teriyaki Dinner Special
    Sean S.

I recently placed a take-out order from Sushi Nishi in Calabasas, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience from start to finish. When I arrived to pick up my food, I politely asked the woman at the front desk if I could get some ginger. She was noticeably rude, never made eye contact, and made the interaction feel uncomfortable. She handed me one tiny portion, and when I asked for a little more, she reluctantly gave me just one extra piece. It was awkward enough that I decided to just pay and leave. Once I got home, I realized there was no ginger included with any of the sushi, so if I hadn't asked, I wouldn't have received any at all. The bag also had no napkins, chopsticks, or even forks -- something you would expect to be standard with a take-out order. As for the food, one of my items was the teriyaki chicken with tempura. The chicken was extremely rubbery and almost inedible. The tempura batter instantly fell off the vegetables, which were still raw inside. The miso soup was bland and didn't even contain any tofu. Between the poor front-desk service, the lack of basic take-out essentials, and the disappointing food quality, I can confidently say there are much better Japanese restaurants in the area for the same price -- with far better service and food. I will not be returning.

Let me tell you something about nishi, it's been my holy grail for over 14 years. I used to live close by, and now I drive from the city at least once a week to curb my craving. The price and quality of fish is unmatched. My go to order is as followed, listen carefully: mushroom miso, Calabasas roll, new nishi roll, rainbow roll, the baby ribs, and sometimes I add Marilyn Mon roll into the mix.

Yum, yum, yum! Fresh fish, left full. Brought an out of town guest along to enjoy and they loved it as well, total win! Not shown is the real crab roll with no mayo, first down and so darn good

Great place for fairly priced, decent eats. Stopped by here last week as we had an hour before our next meeting. I love sushi places that are upfront and honest on their menus that they use "krab" (imitation crab meat) so it saves me the hassle of having to ask this and readjust my order. They do offer real crab for one of their rolls though., I had the miso marinated black cod plate ($27), making it one of the pricier items on the menu, but is my go to for light lunches. While it isn't the most top shelf style I've had, it is still very good, and I finished every morsel on my plate. Normally, miso cod dishes are use a more reduction-style, so it's less saucy, but packs greater flavor. Here, they use a more watered down sauce, and even give you a side of sauce, but you know what? It works! My friend ordered some spicy chicken rice plate, but I didn't love it. Tasted college-level cafeteria style to me. Service is decent, and I'll be happy to pop in here again.

I was surprised to see some reviews saying this places wasn't good since I've always had good experiences. I hesitated going but ended up taking my family there for dinner. We were greeted right when we walked through the door. For a Saturday night we were got a table right away. Our server was very attentive and kept coming back to see if we needed anything or to fill our waters. Put food came out quick and tasted delicious.

Currently my favorite sushi spot. Yummy hand roll is a must. The rams tool, Marylin Mon Roll, and everything here is delicious. The ramen is also super delicious. My toddler loves the ramen noodles.

Happy to have found a new sushi spot that delivers quality sushi and friendly prompt service. I came for lunch on a weekday right at opening and was quickly seated. There was only two tables seated but by the time I left they had developed a nice little crowd, but still had plenty of seating. Seeing how popular they got for an early weekday lunch I could imagine this spot gets traffic on the weekends. Good for them. The restaurant was very clean and spacious. Plenty of tables and openings to sit at the sushi bar. Pro tip for us travelers is that they also have clean restrooms. Score! The service was a solid 10/10. The staff here are super friendly and kind. I was checked up on multiple times throughout my meal in a thoughtful way. Any little thing I needed they were quick to bring me what I needed. While the lunch could have been leisurely, I appreciated that they were prompt and were able to get me in and out as I had limited time for lunch due to traveling. Great people work here who deserve your business. The sushi & my meal were a solid 8/10 rating. Super quality sushi and the freshness was there. I don't typically love when restaurants make rolls with the seaweed on the outside BUT the fish was so fresh that each bite was super tasty and I found I didn't mind the seaweed as much here. I had simple rolls. I ordered a spicy salmon roll which was my favorite as they don't skimp on the fish and spice was mild but flavorful. I also ordered a lunch bento box with teriyaki chicken and a California roll. Simple and not really adventurous choices but I was craving the basics. The California roll was tasty and the teriyaki chicken was well cooked with a tasty sauce, not too thick and had good flavor. The sides were typical for any bento box - miso soup, salad, and rice - nothing special about the sides but fine. A good accompaniment to the main course. Last pro tip: they have the best wasabi here! It had a nice quick and they were generous with the side portion of it. I'm a sucker for good wasabi and had to give them credit. The prices here are middle of the road, not a steal but also not overpriced for the quality and atmosphere. Glad to have found a new sushi spot in Calabasas and I would definitely recommend giving this spot a try next time your in town.

Great service, fresh fish and great ginger (which is huge for me). They had a great menu variety of healthy no rice rolls, to udons and ramens. Their salad options are great too! I appreciate their healthy options at a sushi restaurant. Their crispy onions was one of the best I've ever had!

Came right at 5pm on a Tuesday and we were seated right away as a group of 8. We ordered a number of items and overall everything was delicious! We ordered the garlic edamame, calamari, and mixed vegetable tempura. The calamari was all rings and was more of fried snack. They were ok. The garlic edamame was covered in chili flakes and garlic and was decent. The vegetable tempura was my favorite, the tempura batter wasn't too think but also still crunchy. Good choice of vegetables and sauce. The rolls were all delicious. Everything was fresh and put together so well. I have really nothing else to say because everything was great. Two rolls that stood out to me were the Calabasas Roll and the Rams Roll. I wish I took a photo but believe me they were amazing. I would go back just for that roll.

Having been to the studio city location and enjoying, it's no contest in terms of parking ease (just $7 valet, so $10 LOL) diverse, creative menu items, roominess (at least twice the size here), still a few open tables at all times to enjoy without super cramped environment and just generally blew the doors off pretty much any other sushi joint near or far. Started with the Exclusive menu...not to me (I wish) but a smaller paper menu with specials. The FatherKels Roll, my goodness, what a start. (Weird name comes from, as my son told me, some Instagram chick or something, the usual nonsense.) I couldn't care less if it was named the Long Island Lolita Roll, it was literally the pinnacle of rolls, the Mt Everest if you will of rolls. Then ordered a bunch of rolls from Yellowtail Cilantro, Green Dragon, Citrus, were all one better than the other. Super melt-in-your-mouth, good fish ratio, immaculate sauce parings and fusions harmoniously dancing in your mouth as your tastebuds get orgasmisized to oblivion. You'd think something as simple as a mushroom soup wouldn't warrant any praise...NOT HERE. What a soup, one of the best I've ever had. (Please get this). Everything we tried ranged from A to A+, and the bonus kicker, they have a Yuzu, yes YUZU sauce bottle on the table. Good luck finding that anywhere in the country without begging for it like a little bitch HAHAHAAAA Even the wasabi was so fresh and course ground, I mean just every box was checked and boxes you didn't even know ever existed. Gil, a slick cool dude/manager came to ask how our meal was and complimented our family and ordering taste, nice touch. Needless to say, one and never done; will be hard-pressed to eat sushi anywhere else again...yes I'm not joking. It's not cheap, blew 90 bucks a person all-in but worth every dollar plus interest.

Charming place, tiny but with efficient and experienced service so everything comes out fast. Huge rolls and nigiri. Doesn't feel as expensive because of the generous cuts of fish. Everything is tasty and I end up ordering more than I should given the large portions but no complaints. Sweet shrimp is exceptional as well as their crispy rice. The stuffed squid was good but I would ask for the eel sauce on the side because the crab mix is also sweet, so the sweetness can be overpowering. I don't recommend the ikura bc of the heavy sake marinade but you may feel differently. The ikura has been the one and only item I wouldn't get again. Everything else has been fantastic. This is an entirely different experience to sugarfish. Shibuya is willing to make dishes to your taste, so if you don't want something on a particular dish or you want a special dish not on the menu, just tell your server. Everything can be customized which I really like. Sugarfish by comparison is extremely simple and utilitarian and has a factory quality to it that Shibuya is the complete opposite to. They really shouldn't be compared. If I'm low on time and didn't plan well enough, sugarfish is a reliable spot to get adequate sushi without the preplanning and waiting, but shibuya is a superior experience, imho. Happy eating!
