I had to bring something for a work potluck. Luckily I remembered Sushi on Garfield. I have driven by many times. There is a California Roll special, eight pieces for $4.99 I bought five orders and was all set . The sushi tasted pretty good and the service was good!

Sushi On Garfield is a take-out only mom and pop style shop and this sushi shop perhaps runs the leanest operation I have ever seen. Why? * No physical laminated or paper menu as customers must scan QR code and the full menu with prices is posted only on ... Instagram @sushiongarfield. * Customers are HIGHLY recommended to call and place their orders ahead of time! Don't be like me!!! I came IN PERSON at 12:30 PM and I believe one person (most likely the owner) was handing ordering calls. I waited about 5 minutes and was able to place my order, but I was stunned to learn that the earliest time I can pick up my order is one hour later at 1:30 PM. See their Instagram page for the latest phone number. * No AC inside the building. * No restroom. * Credit card transactions require fee ... $1.17 per transaction. * I was wondering why no one is here ... that's because customers only come here to pick up their orders so they come & go pretty quickly. [Parking]: Mostly street parking, but there's a small parking lot behind the building with tight entrance. [Menu]: Large spicy tuna bowl, salmon sashimi bowl, and udon are available in a large bowl. Small spicy tuna bowl, salmon poki bowl, and salads are available in a small bowl. Combo comes with two pieces shrimp tempura, four pieces vegetable tempura, edamam, and green salad. Bento comes with shrimp and vegetable tempura, green salad, seaweed salad, squid salad, potsticker, cooked sweet egg, pork sausage, and potato croquette. Individual hand rolls and sushi rolls are also available to order. Various sashimi bowls include spicy tuna bowl, spicy tuna salmon bowl, salmon sashimi bowl, salmon & yellowtail bowl, salmon spicy tuna & yellowtail bowl, and yellowtail bowl. *** Spicy tuna bowl (small $7.99): It was a bit disappointed given that I had to wait for one hour. Portion was pretty small and spicy tuna tasted a bit mushy. California roll & chicken teriyaki bento ($14.79): I can see the appeal for this bento as this order has plenty of sides. Chicken was decent even without the teriyaki sauce and sides like potsticker, cooked sweet egg, pork sausage, and potato croquette were not half bad. California rolls were passable, but they weren't as good as California rolls from Yama Sushi Marketplace in San Gabriel. *** For anyone who's willing to (1) plan ahead and (2) want hot food like teriyaki chicken, then Sushi On Garfield deserves some consideration. Otherwise I would much prefer Yama Sushi Marketplace in San Gabriel for easy grab-and-go sushi rolls without having to schedule a pick-up. P.S. - Want to beat inflation? Customers can order 8 pieces of California rolls for $4.99 as of July 2024.

A hole in the wall on Garfield. You have to call ahead at least an hour before as it is one man show. There is credit card is $1.15 charge so suggest paying in cash. If you get there early, suggest waiting in the car since there's little seating inside, just a grab and go. The sashimi was fresh and not fishy for the price of $13.50 is pretty good - I don't think you can find that low of a price for fish in SGV. Highly recommend supporting the owner, he was nice and was working on orders to ensure meeting pick up times.

Very good take-out sushi. I ordered a salmon bowl-- took about 30 min to prepare but it was pretty good. Just a heads up to call ahead to order if you don't want to wait as the place is run by one person when I stopped by today.

i got the large spicy tuna salmon bowl and it was so fresh for a solid price of $13.50. the presentation was beautiful as well. my cousin and i called on a saturday around lunch time and it was about an hour wait, so i do suggest calling ahead to place your order. the restaurant is ran by one man so it will take some time, but it's so worth it! there is no seating besides a bench to wait, so you'll have to take it to-go. as for parking, it might be a challenge since it's on a busy street but we luckily found one immediately

    Salmon Sashimi Bowl ($12.99) & California Roll ($4.99) - July 2022

4 stars This is definitely a small, take-out restaurant that could use a facelift. So small that I passed the storefront the first time around. Then, on my second go-round, parked 400 ft too far according to Google. But no biggie! I just walked right on over. Earlier, I had phoned in my order and the lady on the phone said I could pick up same day at 1:30pm. The food is good and the price reasonable. I only got 2 items on the menu - Salmon Sashimi Bowl ($12.99) & California Roll ($4.99). The rice in the Salmon Sashimi Bowl was perfection! It was perfectly cooked with just the right amount of stickiness. The salmon was fresh and tasty, too. But the star of that dish belonged 1,000% to the white rice. The California Roll was tasty, but the rice was noticeably different. Not sure why they chose to use different rice, but it doesn't matter because it was still good. The only thing I didn't like about the place was the the $1.17 card charge. I will definitely come back for the Salmon Sashimi Bowl. I might try a bento next time.

It's interesting when you go pick up your food it specially says it does not support google or Yelp. Not sure what that is all about. This is a solid take out spot located in a super non-descript location. My cousin introduced me to this place, I'm not really sure anyone would try it based on the way the location looks. Bento boxes are super solid, huge portions, nicely laid out, plenty of variety. I would say the bento could easily feed 2 people. They take credit card finally for only a $1.17 surcharge. A couple of tips: Call multiple times to place your order Expect at least an hour wait Closed on Tuesdays

I never thought I'd ever get excited over California rolls but this place literally blew my mind. This place has literally the best California rolls I've ever had in my entire life. It's so soft that it just melts in your mouth. I love this place. They serve fresh fish (salmon and spicy tuna) with yummy sides (croquette and tempura!) and soft soft rice, plus the presentation is so perfect. The Spicy Tuna roll is also sooo soft like the California roll. The bentos are so skillfully prepared as you can see the detailed work they put in with the salad and tempura sides. Bonus is everything is such an affordable price! To-Go only, though they have two small tables outside. There is only one chef and lots of customers, which is why you usually need to call 45 minutes to an hour in advance of picking up your food but boy oh boy is it worth the wait. Their order list is usually full by 2pm so be sure to call early in the day to place your order.

Can someone explain to me why the party tray price for California roll (40 x $27) is better than the single order (8 x $5)? Are the cut rolls bigger in the party tray? If not, why not just order 5 orders of the 8 pack for $25?

Likely paying for the wow-factor for presentation and the larger cost of the platter.

With the pandemic and all I don't carry cash with me, are the still not taking debit cards?

They've been been taking card for as long as I've been going. Which has only been this year.😅

Are they open on Sunday? I tried calling but after it rings it went to voicemail?

It is open sundays it's just really busy since it's so cheap.

I'd like to visit here soon! There are only a handful of sushi places in the area... will I be making a right choice?

It's not really a sit down sushi place. Phone order recommended and call and keep calling within the first hour they open or you won't be having any sushi that day 😁. Regulars know what I mean. The person answering phones will tell you what time…

How is the salmon sashimi? Is it popular like the tuna?

The salmon is just as good as the tuna. I actually prefer salmon because it’s fattier, more flavor! If you like sashimi message me, I know of a great place!

All of their options are Wagyu, every part of the cow from head to tail is available. The Argentina shrimp is massive. The meat felt and tasted like it could be a small lobster tail. So good! The fried chicken drumstick was flavored so well, I recommend ordering everything you can on the menu at least once. Every item is carefully thought out with wonderful presentations. This is dining but elevated. The service was impeccable. During the month of September, the city of Monterey Park is running a special where if you have a MPK library card, you can get deals and freebies from businesses and you can get an iced or green tea from Kagura if you show them your library card. I got a cold canned green tea, added to a cup of ice, refreshing and great with the delicious katsu that I got. I did a walk in for a slightly later lunch after dropping by Asayoru Maid Cafe across the street for a drink during their morning Asa shift. I went on a Thursday and was seated immediately. Staff is very friendly and checked up on me several times. It's a smaller restaurant, but it's simple and elegant in it's own way. No extra frills or bells and whistles. There were a couple other tables dining there and pick up orders too, so I can imagine it'd be busy during the weekends and lunch/dinner rushes. They have a paper wait list outside for those times. Limited parking in front of the plaza, but there's a parking structure next door. For my lunch, I got their demi glace loin katsu. It comes with miso soup, a side of rice, huge helping of cabbage salad with dressing, hot mustard, and some small sides of a sweet carrot salad, cucumber pickles, and 2 pieces of potatoes. Each side added a nice balance to flavor. I mention this in some reviews and to my friends that usually you get full because you get tired of the same flavor and texture all of the time, so I really enjoyed the small bites of crunchy texture from sweet, sour, and savory. The katsu is really where Kagura shines, as it's what they're known for. Super moist pork katsu meat inside, deliciously tender delicate layers of meat. The crisp of the breading outside isn't too greasy, but has the perfect level of indulgent oiliness that balances out. All perfect with a fluffy bed of rice and the demi glace brown sauce added a deliciously savory, slightly sort of fruity ketchup-y flavor (added this to my rice too!). Definitely want to come back to try more of their menu!
