Neighborhood gem! If you're looking for a traditional Japanese restaurant that serves nigiri, this place is your spot! The menu is pretty simple - there's bentos, udons, dons, some appetizers, and an ala carte nigiri and handroll menu. There's no fancy rolls, and the menu is unpretentious. Fish is fresh and the sushi portion is solid. 8 pieces was just the right amount for me. The restaurant doesn't sit that many people. Servers are attentive.

Did I...just came across a local hidden gem?! I was looking for a restaurant I've never been to for lunch and decided to come here. There is plenty of street parking and limited parking lot in the back. I stopped by 10 mins before opening and there was already a line. I noticed the crowd is much older so this is probably a local's favorite. Suddenly it was a whole crowd coming into the restaurant at the same time. The waitresses must be overwhelmed! Despite having a full house and yes, service can be a bit slow, but they are very nice and polite. Food is good and price is affordable. Old school vibes. The only complaint I have is that rice is too clumpy and mushy. I absolutely enjoyed the potato salad on the side. I'm not sure if they are this busy everyday, if so, expect a wait. I'd stop by again and try different items on the menu.

Small Japanese Restaurant which holds 46 people. We went on a Wednesday at 12:15pm. Found the last parking spot in the back and walked in to get seated. Place was packed but fortunately we were first in line and a table was just clearing. We were seated in 5 minutes. We heard good about this place so we wanted to give it a try. Service was great. Waitresses were very attentive to our needs and we were served very fast. I ordered the 2 combo lunch special Tempura and Salmon Teriyaki Plate ($20.00). It comes with miso soup to start. The miso was solid. The tempura was perfectly made. Crunchy texture and juicy in the inside. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the rich oily skin was wonderful. I think I found a winner. Coming back for more in the future.

Tempura here is EXCELLENT! Taihei is an OLD school sushi restaurant located in Monterey Park, CA. It's family owned and run by Japanese chefs and staff. Established in1983. No frills restaurant. No fancy or fusion rolls. Just the traditional style sashimi/nigiri/roll made well! The technique at Taihei are meticulous, meaning in my opinion each piece of sushi and roll is made with such skill and precision. Beautifully presented sushi. Not a high-end sushi spot, but their quality ingredients are apparent at Taihei. Japanese comfort food that are not from the sushi bar are also available. Delicious teriyaki, tempura, hotpot (nabe), sukiyaki, bento combos are what comes to mind. The restaurant is small and a busy establishment, so plan accordingly. ** Closed on Monday/Tuesday. Close in the mid-afternoon (between lunch and dinner service). Cash and Credit accepted (no AMEX). Parking available in their SMALL back lot. Street and Residential parking are the better option.

My boyfriend and I were on the hunt to try a sushi spot we've never been to before. THISSS is my new favorite spot to get sushi. Trust me when I say it is 1000000% worth the wait. Understandably this place gets packed fast for a reason. The sushi is unbelievably fresh, the portions are amazing and the have a great selection of rolls to choose from. The space is purposefully small so that they maintain the quality of their food. Staff is great and welcoming. What more could you want. lol excited to show all my friends and family this place

Taihei has been a staple in Monterey Park for many years. Located on Garfield Ave, with parking in the back and street parking. A Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and some tables. They have bento boxes, fresh sashimi, sushi rolls, and nigiri. The service is good and so is the food. The combination bentos are such a deal. You can choose a 2 choice or 3 choice. You can choose from beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, tempura, and sashimi (tuna or salmon). There is an up charge for certain items. But it is still a great deal.

Small Japanese restaurant here in SGV. Seems like a hidden gem but the place was very busy! Food was great all around and good value for money. We got blue crab hand rolls, miso marinated black cod, and chirashi. They were all delicious! Service was pleasant and attentive. One small issue I had was the smell inside. Like the place smells old or musty? You get nose blind after a while but just a warning for sensitive people!

This is a little sushi restaurant that is located on a main street. They have a really small parking area in the back but I would just recommend parking on the side streets since it's easier to get in and out. Service: They are very attentive here! The servers came around a few times to refill my water without me asking. Food: We ordered a few sushi, half a dozen of oysters, and also a salmon collar. The fish was so fresh and I really like the fish to rice ratio. The oysters are so fat and juicy. But my favorite was the salmon collar. The salmon was so juicy!

Family owned and hidden on a main street- I recently started going to Taihei and have now grown to like smaller mom/pop sushi shops. Workers are accommodating, super knowledgable about the menu & always polite. Each time we've had dinner here, fish were always fresh and their rice bowls are super filling and shareable! I recommend the donkatsu! Sometimes they may run out of certain fish during dinner times, just be sure to ask. Parking: we always park on the neighboring street and just walk over. Food: We always order the usual - salmon, tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, halibut ; everything is always fresh. Nice rice to fish ratios. They even have a bar if you're a party of just 1!

    Shrimp Tempura

My husband and I had a Friday night dinner here. It was a bit busy with a few parties ahead of us. This was our first time here so my husband waited for about 10 minutes before someone acknowledged him and we realized all you had to do was write your name on the list on top of the fish tank. The restaurant is older but has a nice feel to it. It's casual and if you're looking for that vibe, this is the place. I ordered shrimp tempura, which was really good! It was crispy and not too oily. Then, I ordered a salmon roll and spicy tuna roll. The spicy tuna was delicious. But, the salmon in the salmon roll was a little fishy. The katsu don was also good. The bowl is like 75% rice but the katsu was still a large portion. I just didn't end up eating all of the rice cause there was so much. Once we got seated, service picked up. Our servers were on top of everything from our water to checking in and to getting us anything extra we needed. The food was also very quickly served to us after ordering.

Uni, tuna, salmon, and albacore belly, unagi, and a partially consumed monkfish liver

Been coming to Taihei for years and the food and service never disappoints. There's nearby street parking with a small lot in the back, once you're inside, it's a bit tight, but gives you a feel like you're in Japan. The fish and fried tempura here is spot on. It's a bit higher than your typical mom&pop restaurant, but the quality is worth it. Knife skills are exceptional, portioning is favorable, and most importantly, taste is top-notch. Batter is on crisp and light- definitely great vegetable tempura! The monkfish liver is fresh, flavorful, and balanced with green onion and other pops of acidity. Finally, service is attentive and friendly!

We came back seven days later and it wasn't a disappointment for authentic Japanese food. The fish quality is good but the Teri yaki beef was so tender and the chicken was yummy yum. If I had to critique one thing I wish she has tempura green beans or onion. Excellent service and great old school feel here.

    Is vegetable tempura vegan?

I would venture to say yes as far as the vegetables. The dip may not be as it is based on dashi flakes.

Are you doing dine in now?

Yes, dine in service is available.

Value wise it is definately very value priced. It seem like their lunch also has a good bento value as well. Parking is massive since it's part of a shopping plaza, though the restaurant itself seems a bit out of place and can easily be missed when you're driving by. They do have a really wide selection of rolls. The other person in my group got the spider roll and truly enjoy it. However, it was disappointing that there wasn't much variety for non-fried food in the bento combinations. A good bento box should be a balanced meal, but pretty much my whole meal felt fried. Also, the place doesn't fully represent a traditional Japanese aesthetic, it feels alot more like a Korean twist on sushi. Overall, great for the wallet and good rolls, but just okay on the balance of the bento meal.
