Was looking for sushi near our hotel and noticed this place in YELP. There was a banner hanging in the front of the restaurant stating, grand opening. So we wandered in about 6:00 p.m. for dinner. The place was full of young people and families, good sign. We ordered both from the sushi menu and dinner menu and were very pleased with our food. The restaurant uses a laminated sushi menu and you use a dry erase pen to mark your sushi order. What a great idea! The food came out quickly and we ate every bite. This sushi was super delicious. But we had it delivered through Postmates and it wasn't at all clear that the nigiri was going to be only one piece. The price was higher than it was on Grubhub when we looked later and more expensive than at the restaurant itself. One piece of salmon nigiri was almost $6!!! I've eaten here 3 times. One time dining in and twice for pickup. I got the rock and roll with the curry katsu for pickup. They were very attentive on their cleanliness and no contact pick up. But when I ordered the katsu, the menu online said it came with miso soup and veggies. No miso soup or veggies :( When I opened up the curry sauce to pour over this very good looking katsu it was my biggest regret of the week. That curry sauce was not too tasty . I ruined the katsu with it. The rock and roll was very tasty. I would still get food from here again, just not the curry katsu. read more

We're so happy that Sushi One is back open! It's for sure our favorite sushi place in N Portland. Never had a bad experience here, the food is always fresh and delicious, although we mainly order veggie dishes so I can't speak to much of the fish menu. Even before the management change we've always felt like this is the highest quality and best deal for sushi around. This was an solid place for food, just very unorganized. Water was never refilled. We had to get up and ask for things like napkins. Some food was forgotten and came out over the span of half an hour+ so people ended up having to eat without everyone else having their food. Actually food was pretty good, everyone was happy with it once received. Probably wouldn't go back just because of the service, but the food is solid. If you're considering this place I'd say it's worth a shot to visit, we could have just been in on a bad night. read more

Perfect local sushi spot. We came here after hearing they were under new management and had a great meal. Fish is fresh and flavorful, service is friendly and fast. I come here all the time but this time I decided to do takeout. I placed the order over the phone and was told 35-45 min. Got there about 40min later, the guy said it would be a 5-10min wait and 20min later looks over at me and goes "ohhhhh noooo I forgot to bring out your order my bad" while he stood around talking to the cooks and had me waiting 20min while my food sat on the counter. I also order the salmon skin salad every single time, it comes with a spicy type of dressing. This was our 1st visit since a) the change in ownership, and b) the pandemic that is changing our world. Anyway we were extremely satisfied, the food was great easily fulfilling our hopes, and the staff was pleasant. The prices are still very reasonable. I am beyond thrilled that Sushi One replaced the old sushi place in that location. The sushi chefs at Sushi One are the best in town, the servers are kind and professional, and the to-go orders are put together nicely. Some people may not like that the rolls are not gargantuan in size, but I prefer sushi that I can eat in one bite, so I have no complaints about that. All in all it's my favorite sushi spot in North Portland, and I think it is up there with best in the city. read more

Located next to a fairly large sized convenience store, but street parking and parking behind the building. It's small but all indoor dining tables were taken except 1 and I was 1 of 4 people waiting to pick up. The food was ready when the restaurant said it would be. Got home and everything that we ordered was there. We ordered 3 rolls and the sushi/sashimi combo platter. All were very good. I dont give a lot of credit to this place or any place for that matter when it comes to making a good roll. I figure, douse the roll with cream cheese, something sweet, maybe something deep fried, and a little fresh fish...you're good to go. Sushi One was no exception; it's rolls were good but like I just wrote, I'm not going to give you 4 stars for good rolls. Surprisingly the sushi/sashimi combo platter was memorable. Fish tasted fresh. The fish pieces were generously cut. Typical American sushi joint. Food and rolls are very typical. Flavors and portions are spot on. The waitstaff were friendly and accommodating. Restaurant was very clean. I really didn't like how sloooow everything was. Even the miso soup took 30 mins to come out. We ordered lunch specials. We waited sooo looong for our food--Lunch is supposed to be quick! We were only 1 of 2 tables, so it's not like they were super busy and hustling... Definitely not a place to go if you're looking to get in and out in 30 mins. We ordered takeout on a Friday afternoon so it was pretty busy. We waited longer than expected but we didn't mind because they food was great and the service was friendly. We got the edamame, tako yaki, hamachi sashimi in yuzu sauce, ocean roll, and the sake bomb roll which was my personal favorite. The asparagus works surprisingly well in the roll and gave it a delightful texture and bite. The ocean roll was very refreshing and light because it doesn't have rice. I went in a bit past noon for lunch. Due to coming in for a late lunch, the place was fairly quiet and not too busy. In addition I had an awesome waiter who was attentive to the needs of the customers in the restraunt. My lunch consisted of: Edamame / Kabocha Tempura & Tofu / Poke / Chirashi A few thoughts on each dish: Edamame: Tasted family standard, I do appreciate that they salted it (I have been place it is served unseasoned) Tempura: Had a nice flaky crisp to it. The sauce did not overwhelm the Kabocha or tofu. Poke: The fish was nicely diced, the sauce was not overly salty and did not overpower the taste of the fish (tuna) Chirashi: The rice is good - I love yuzu and it tastes like the ride is seasoned with vinegar and yuzu. The assortment of sashimi is great (esp for the price) From octopus, to seated salmon, to tamago. In my experience it has been hard to find good Japanese food in Portland, specifically non-teriyaki / non-sushi roll Japanese food, so eating here was both refreshing and a joy. This place is definitely overrated. At best the food is 2-3 stars. Place wasn't busy and food still took a long time to prepare and serve. Been traveling and had a craving for PNW sashimi. Saw the overwhelming 5 star reviews here which encouraged me to travel more than 6 miles and endure the traffic at 5pm! Little did I know I was going to be jarringly disappointed. First thing that struck me was the nonexistent diversity (this is Portlandia after all) which can be concerning when you go to an ethnic place. Fifteen minutes before the end of happy hour. Score! Sat down at the counter and took a few minutes before anyone took notice and came over. Got a large hot sake (had to pour the first glass myself although I really don't mind), HH chef's choice sashimi platter, and spicy roll to start with before I get something from the regular menu. Salmon was tender and buttery but there was something strange about the tuna -- not the usual texture and consistency, almost stale. The single piece of hamachi had no flavor. Spicy roll was good but the nori was soggy and tough. Later added a spider roll; sans legs!!! I want the crunchy legs! Dammit! Why call it a spider roll if it's unceremoniously mutilated? You'd think I'd be grossed out by crab legs? Expressionless fish heads were on full display at the bar! I did get additional salmon sashimi. Service was glaringly subpar especially from the older woman. She was fawning over some clients, most likely regulars, but was very cold and unfriendly. She dropped the bill on the table even before I was finished! UUTF! I still wanted more sashimi! The younger lady must be familiar with her attitude and came to the rescue. Five stars for this place?! Come on. The neighborhood may be a food/ foodie desert but the rating is grossly misleading and unfair to readers unfamiliar with the place. Big fan of Sushi One. My mother was in town, and we all wanted sushi. Samurai Blue, one of my favorites recently closed, so we decided to try out Sushi One. We were all thoroughly pleased. We had cucumber salad, which was crisp, clean, and well seasoned. This was followed by the tempura appetizer. $6.50 for 2 pcs of shrimp, and 5 pcs of mixed veggies. Great deal, and the batter was excellent. We had a variety of rolls including spicy tuna, veggie tempura, and a salmon roll. All of the fish was high quality, and they were well assembled. We also got some mixed nigiri, including a seam bream special. The service was efficient and friendly, and I can't wait to go back. I'm want to try some of the teriyaki and beef yakiniku.
