    Rubbery cold calimari
    Jerry P.

First time in. I ordered the catfish basket and an order of calamari. The fries were delicious and that was about it. The catfish was plentiful but had a taste of kitchen cleanser. The calamari was cold and rubbery. Hard to chew. Didn't finish it. The food looked amazing. Didn't taste so good. The server appeared to be the only one working. He was the server, cashier and buster. This left my service slow. I have no need to come back here since the crab was far too expensive for me to take a chance.

We were visiting from out of town and chose Captain's Choice Seafood based on the great reviews. The seafood was definitely fresh, and their house Cajun sauce was packed with flavor--easily the highlight of the meal. The prices were fair for a seafood boil, so no complaints there. However, the service was a serious struggle. On a busy Friday night, there was only one server handling the entire restaurant. We waited over 20 minutes just to be greeted, another 20 minutes to place our order, and over an hour for our food to arrive. The server was clearly doing his best--he was friendly and very apologetic--but it was impossible for one person to juggle taking orders, running food, cleaning tables, and even chasing out dine-and-dashers. At one point, someone from the back helped clear tables, but otherwise, it was all on him. The decor was interesting! The best way to describe it is it felt like eating inside a pirate ship-themed putt-putt course--not necessarily bad, just very cheesy lol. Overall, if you have patience and time to spare, the seafood is worth it. But unless they get more staff, be prepared for a long wait!

If it's Cajun and Creole seafood you want in Northeast Portland, Captain's offers something for almost everyone. Between another Cajuny place my daughter mentioned, we settled on Captain's. Plus when they serve their spread, It's NOT in a bag like other 'boil-in-a-bag' places- which I liked. Similar to most seafood boil places, Captain's ceiling is also hooked up with fishing net and other thematic pieces. Our calamari starter- which were just rings, had a tasty dusting of seasoning. The fried oysters, had a heavy dredge and tasted off. Waste of money it was. Between our 5 main meals, flavors were on point. The fusion of old bay with garlic AND butter was a masterpiece of flavors when we came for a low-key dinner on a Saturday to celebrate my daughter's PSU graduation the following day. Like every other boil place, the food swims in all that good flavor and LOTS of it. I just wished there were more folks on hand except the one fella who was literally multitasking phone orders, providing leftovers baggies, taking orders and BRINGING out orders,

I will totally recommend this restaurant if you like Cajun style seafood boil. After every F2F meeting in the office my friend and I, we decide to have lunch in this place. The spicy skinless shrimps and corn in Cajun broth is a Devine. The service is excellent. We asked for an extra spicy broth on the side, and they totally obliged us with. The corn in this bowl tasted excellent. It is so addictive, that your taste buds will have a party in your mouth. There are many options for seafood. The portions big and bang for the buck. I am definitely going back many times. Ambiance is good too. This place is very non assuming but the food is excellent and the crew is very friendly and awesome. Totally recommend to try it out at least once, and I guarantee that you will go back for more.

Myself & Restaurant view and view of boil (Used to be Village Inn)... Seafood boil, Combo 2
    Ricki B.

Went To Captains Choice Cajun Seafood on Monday evening... the sauce was really good, seafood seemed fresh, the crab was a little over cooked. but they weren't busy at all. And every time I've driven by it or tried to go in, it's been really empty. My daughter and I had the combo #2 which came with 1 lb of snow crab, clams, and shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn. We got medium spice on the sauce. It was $88 after our drinks. It's too expensive and they need to have better options to choose from. I've been in NY and would get a crab boil with 1 lb of snow, clams, egg, sausage, potatoes, corn, and noodles, plus and appetizer and drink (not including alcohol) for $35-$40... I don't even eat shrimp; so Captains Choice pretty much forced me to get it. They should give more options to mix certain seafoods instead of making the choice for you, and at such an expensive rate. And then with just snow crab alone was still expensive. Sauce is good and I loved that they had onions in it, but to me, not worth the price. A family came in a little after we did, and all you could hear was them complaining about how expensive it was and they walked out. I was thinking of doing the same; but by that point we were starving and decided to stay. Place used to be the Village Inn.

    Spoiled Ranch

I came here hoping it would be good because of the reviews but I'm so disgusted. The calamari was VERY rubbery and I asked for ranch for my fries and when I tried it the ranch tasted quite literally spoiled. It was so nasty I had to spit it out. I asked the server if it was actually ranch just to make sure and she brought out another, I smelled it and it was exactly the same. It was super thick like jello and had such a foul smell. I told her it tasted like it's gone bad and it's nasty and all she said was 'ok' I lost my appetite but they brought out my food which was the combo #3 I tried to be optimistic but i just kept getting more and more dissatisfied. The potato wasn't fully cooked and it barely had any sausage, the sausage was weirdly sweet. The server didn't offer any money off or at least an apology about the ranch PLEASE DONT COME HERE.

I appreciated the decor of the place and the cleanliness of the seat and tables. When eating Cajun food, it is difficult to keep your hands and tables clean! There was a large screen TV playing Chinese videos that felt a little out of place. Service was very nice and patient with our group while we were discussing what to order. We ordered the fried calamari appetizer, catfish basket, clam chowder, Dungeness crab special with Cajun sauce, lobster tail special with garlic butter and soft drinks. The Coca Cola was extremely flat and tasted watered down. We thought it might have been a fluke due to the soda dispenser but our refill tasted the same. The fried calamari had a nice crisp texture and chew but lacked flavor, we had to dip it in the Cajun sauce to help alleviate that problem. The clam chowder and catfish basket was decent; however, consistency of the chowder felt off. The star was definitely the Dungeness crab special. The Cajun sauce had a nice flavor, although could have been spicier. We ordered medium and did not taste any heat. The garlic butter sauce was outshined by the cajun sauce. For the price, I felt like the quantity was justified due to the market price of seafood. The quality of the seafood ingredients was surprisingly good as well.

I have to say this is the best Cajun seafood I have EVER had and I have had some good ones. Had the seafood boil for party of 2. Shrimp, crab legs, clams, corn, sausage and potatoes. Hands down messy and worth diving in to! You definitely get what you pay for in quality, quantity and taste! Flavorful and fresh. I will for sure spread the word about this restaurant and I will be back. We loved it and the service is outstanding. Overall, best place I've eaten at in years!!!

Very decorated interior with cool visuals.

I loved this place! We tried the lobster roll (not a classic roll, they take their own spin) and the fried fish and both were great! They both came with tornado potatoes. The interior is well decorated and had super cool visuals over the front wall. Honestly, I want to have a birthday party with karaoke here! Would definitely recommend this place.

    Fancy LED screen!

The food here was great, and what a superb atmosphere! I'm a fan of seafood, though I don't have a lot of experience with "Cajun" in particular. It seemed really authentic to me... and either way, it was damn tasty! (If a tiny bit pricey) The pirate statue was pretty cheesy tho.

As i approached the building, I noticed that it was full of people. I fell into the street. I was in and out of consciousness. My heart was racing at the thought that I drove 15 hours and could not get a seat at SCREEN DOOR. As I walked into the building a humble man greeted me. He told me that they would clean off a table for me. WOO HOO. I bursted out crying at the thought that I finally got my seat. As I sat down a soft chair graced my bottom. Beautiful. I looked around and the scenery was beautiful. As I looked at the menu, my eyes sharply turned to the chicken and waffles. Deliciously perfect choice. I ordered my food and got a coffee. My chicken and waffles arrived and I took a bite. I started floating. My soul left my body. I looked down at my body as I floating away, I was enjoying every bite. I reached the heavens. I was recently in NOLA and was in need of some favorites. So here it is. The sampler is the way to go, a bit of everything. greens are hearty and well-seasoned, beans are smoky and rich, jambalaya is maybe the favorite so savory and the étouffée is creamy and lots of seafood flavor, though a little mild, and needed a little salt and hot sauce (just my taste). I had the catfish platter with collard green soup and mac and cheese, and my boyfriend had the jambalaya pasta. They even packed our meals in to-go plates so we could take our leftovers with us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Portland isn't really known for soul food, but hands down, this is the best place to find it out here. The vibe of the restaurant was comfortable and authentically "old school".
