I have recently found out that I am pregnant. Tuesday I had my first ultrasound and prenatal doctors appointment. So raw fish is definitely a no no. Friends of ours wanted to go out to celebrate Chinese New Years eve. The restaurant they suggested was Sushi Palace. I wasn't sure I would be able to eat there due to my dietary restrictions for the next nine months. We ended up finding the menu online and saw that there were tons of non sushi options to choose from so we decided to give it a go. Sushi Palace is a little small but packed to capacity with people. There is always a line to get in. Lot's of Yale students too. The parking lot only has room for maybe six cars so I would suggest parking nextdoor at KFC. You can order meals off of a menu but no one does that. The best deal is the "buffet." You are given two ala carte menu's, one features salads, soups, udon, dumplings, katsu, yakitori, terriyaki, and a few more things that I am forgetting. The second menu has sushi and sashimi, maki rolls, and special rolls. I was extremely impressed with the non fish sushi options. All were better then I expected. Sushi Palace would be a great place for vegetarians to try. I tried the avacado peanut roll, the avacado and mango roll, the sweet potato terriyaki roll, inari (tofu skin), a special roll with avacado, veggies ,mango with chili sauce, and a odd mushroom roll. All the rolls were tasty and filled me up. The only roll I did not care for was the pickled mushroom. My husband and friends had the sushi, sashimi, and a few special rolls. They all said that the fish was really fresh and tasty which was amazing for the price and unlimited portions. The only rule is that you do not waste your food, order all you want just make sure you eat it all. We also ordered a bunch of non fish items too. The appetizers usually come in two pieces so if you want more make sure you specify. We tried the lumpia (spring roll), gyoza, chicken & pork katsu, chicken yakitori, and edamame. All were cooked to order and were delivered to our table when ready. Our friend's kids loved the the tori udon which was a chicken udon noodle soup. They also enjoyed shrimp tempura and green tea ice cream. If it was not for our friend's suggestion (she had been to Sushi Palace before) we would have never given it a try. The name and location, so close to Sonobana, seemed off putting. Boy were we wrong. The food was great as was the price, $15.95 during the week and about $2 more on the weekend. Kids eat for $8.95. A great price for all you can eat, so come hungry. So many choices especially for those who cannot have or do not like raw fish. The waitstaff was super efficient for being so busy. When I first got to the New Haven area, and read about this place, I had to try it. My friends and I came several times, and we thought it was good and worth the price. But, then we stopped going--and there are a few reasons. 1. I ordered a seaweed salad and there was a beer bottle cap in it! I don't drink beer and nobody at the table drinks beer, so it had to have been something from the kitchen (Like the ubiquitous hair in my food complaints, who knows whose hair it is, but this certainly was NOT my bottle cap!!). It was disgusting, and the first thing I thought was,"OMG, is this how they cut costs? just tossing back unused food?" Needless to say, I was so disgusted, I never went back. 2. An annoying practice at the place is that if THEY think you have ordered too much food, they will drop it from your order! Yeah, no warning--and not just sushi, even kitchen stuff! So, since everyone's food is ordered on the same sheet of paper, if you happened to ask for something that they randomly decided to drop, then you are out of luck and have to hope that one of your friends will share the food they ordered with you, while you continue to wait for your food after reordering it! So, if you don't mind eating questionable bottle cap containing food in a place with dropped orders, then come here. read more

All you can eat for $20 is definitely cheap. We were there yesterday and they did not have red clams. We loved red clams so we decided to maybe go to Sushi House?! A staff heard our conversation and stopped by saying that the red clams were out of stock. The fish market was out of red clams for three weeks already. So he said that no matter where we would go, we wouldn't find red clams. We stayed. Today, we were at Sushi House and there they served red clams!!! Before this, Sushi Palace deserved 4.5 stars and now I give it a 1.0 star because they lied to me. Moreover, do you know that they listed tobiko in their menu but actually masago? Though this is only my 3rd review or so I will not hand out 5 reviews often but lets face it there are not that many good joints at this value that offer this service. You want a full slab of tuna or salmon just ask for it and fill your tummy with greatness. AS A RESPECT NOTE: dont order more than you can handle. They will yell at you... and they should! dont waste! order what you know you can do and then just order more. fair warning it gets busy so parking will be limited and wait will be long. I've been to a few all you can eat sushi places in my life so wasn't expecting much, but wow, how does this place make money? Their fish is fresh and great for the all you can eat price of $19.95 (plus tax & tip = about $26-27 a person). This is the best all you can sushi place I've been to (I've been to 4-5 about in CT, NY and FL). My favorite fish there was the white tuna. I must've had 7-8 pieces of sushi/sashimi of it, which in a normal restaurant would've cost me $19.95. The tuna and all the other fish were marinated/prepared very well. The white tuna was slightly buttery, which I loved! Yum. The kitchen food is good but isn't anything outstanding- I'd give it a 3/3.5. The kitchen food is mostly fried food. What's not to love about fried food? The tempuras, katus, dumplings, shumais, etc. are all good. One thing I didn't like on the kitchen food was the seafood udon soup. Also, I'd get the chicken katsu over the pork katsu. Overall, I got 4 rounds of food, tea and green tea ice cream (happy happy happy). It consisted of varieties of a shrimp tempura roll, white tuna sushi/sashimi, squid sushi/sashimi, salmon sushi/sashimi, yellowtail sushi/sashimi, albacore tuna sashimi (probably sushi/sashimi altogether I had 20 pieces), veggie gyoza, pork gyoza, shrimp tempura, seafood udon, shumai, pork katsu, chicken katsu and I'm sure something else I forgot about in my haze of overeating. This place is definitely worth the money, not because of the amount of food you get, but because the sushi is good. My favourite AYCE sushi place in CT. They use premium sushi rice for their sushi and it is cooked and seasoned in a perfect way. This is the only AYCE sushi place I know that has beef rice and I really like it. My favorite sushi in CT and the best all-you-can-eat sushi place I have ever been to. Unlike most AYCE sushi restaurants, the sushi here is actually fresh and flavorful. They don't sacrifice the quality of food in any way. Even more impressive is that you can choose anything off the menu. Most AYCE restaurants limit you to a few rolls and simple sushi. At Sushi Palace you can choose from sushi, sashimi, rolls (including specialty rolls), hand rolls, kitchen offerings (such as teriyaki chicken), salads, and soups. It's really the best deal you'll ever find in sushi. I don't live in CT anymore but when I visit, a trip to Sushi Palace is an absolute must. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. read more

Only started going here recently, and I regret all the time I missed out on this quality, all-you-can-eat sushi. The first time, I went with my boyfriend, and we were just getting a feel for the rolls. We ordered a couple sushi pieces and the classic pink lady and rainbow rolls at first. I also got miso soup, which was very good, and he got a seafood udon, which he now wants to order all the time. Then we got the Hamden roll. We're never going to fill out one of those sushi sheets without placing a number next to the Hamden roll ever again. It's incredible - the crunchy shrimp tempura on the inside and the eel on top combine for an explosion of flavor. On our most recent visit (Saturday), we also ordered the soft-shell crab roll, which was a lot like the Hamden roll and equally awesome, and a couple other special rolls. We also went with two other friends, so we were able to order some edamame and seaweed salad to share. Bringing friends is a good idea so you can order more of a variety from the menu, since the place wants you to eat all you order. The seaweed salad is good, and it comes in small bowls, but I couldn't finish one of those bowls myself and still have room for soup, sushi and tempura. You get your money's worth when you order special rolls, but it takes a long time to get to your table, especially if the place is busy. This means you're kind of forced to order stuff from the kitchen. It's true that they sometimes don't fill all of your sushi order if they think you've ordered too much or if it doesn't fit on the big square plate, but by the time you're eating your second round, you don't even notice they left off a few eel pieces. And no matter how full you are, you definitely have room for ice cream here. One small scoop is the perfect way to end this sushi experience. read more

I'll forgive you if you immediately assume All You Can Eat Sushi is a really, really bad idea. I get that. Like gas station hot dogs. It doesn't make any sense. Yet that shit is bangin'. The special rolls are especially impressive. You really can't go wrong. Try a little bit of everything, though try not to over-order. Don't be that guy or girl. I will say the service, for me, was a little spotty. Some rolls never seemed to arrive, though I was at a fairly large table and I can understand how things get lost along the way. Also, the sake sort of tastes like formaldehyde. That doesn't seem right. Maybe sake's supposed to taste like that? I'm not an expert. Also, the tea is extremely forgettable. Seriously. Just forget it. Not a good idea. Otherwise, you're talking so much top shelf sushi the only things left will be your regret. Sure, you didn't NEED to eat that much sushi, but at least now you know, if somebody ever asks you, "Oh yeah, you think you can eat several pounds of raw fish?" First of all, I have to clarify their food is pretty good- fresh and authentic, some innovative dishes are delicious as well. 4 star for food itself. -2 star for their service, which brings the overall rating to a 1 star. There is a guy with glasses who is very rude. As we were chatting over our last few pieces of sashimi and sushi, he suddenly came over and took away all of our food, saying "you know what, time is money". And then he stormed out. He also rushed us to leave whenever he got a chance, and made a lot of noise when cleaning nearby tables, as if he was bothered because we spent time talking as we were eating. This is the most ridiculous dining experience I have ever had. I have been to Sushi Palace a couple times. I would say their food has been good and consistent in quality. There are tons of places for sushi in new haven, but this is by far my favorite. The specialty rolls are all great, and there is fantastic variety. And you get them all for the one all you can eat price! Of course there's also maki rolls, sushi, and sashimi included, but what's even greater, is all teh salads, soups, tempura, teriyaki, and even ice cream is inclluded too. It's all good quality, and to buy what I eat individually would easily cost over $50, but here, weekdays is around $18, and weekends $22. I don't know any reputable Sushi bar that puts avocado in a Salmon Skin handroll. I ordered mine to be delivered, and when it arrived, it was soggy, had no bite, AT ALL, and was ultimately, very disappointing. These rolls are meant to be crunchy, and the salmon skin should also be crisp, and not flabby and droopy. And it isn't as if it was sitting around for a while. It was delivered quickly and went from the restaurant, straight to my house. I can only imagine that it was the avocado that was the culprit. I love avocado, but it ruined that roll. BTW, I do not live in San Francisco, and I don't even know where Soma is. I have tried to change my profile, but YELP simply will not let me do that. Maybe that is why I never post here. read more

As an all-you-can-eat sushi place, even after having read all of the yelp reviews, I wasn't expecting the sushi to be as good as what it was. We came here on a Saturday night, and it was bumpin'! I rarely use that word, but in all seriousness, there were just so many people there, that's the only way I can describe it. We were placed at the sushi bar, and the food definitely lived up to the hype. This is a $20 all you can eat sushi place, where you order freshly made sushi in batches. You get a paper menu where you write out how much of each sushi/sashimi/roll you want. (You can ask for another one For us, we focused mostly on sashimi (yellowtail and salmon) and some rolls (rainbow roll, dragon rolls, lobster roll). The sashimi was quite tender and delicious, but the rolls were fine but not the best we've ever had. The desserts are all you can eat too, but we were so full, we ended up getting only two orders of ice cream (green tea and red bean). Parking can be hard to find, so be patient and DON'T park at the nearby KFC. (They have a sign on both KFC and the Sushi Palace not to park there, so I'm guessing bad things will happen if you do.) tl;dr Not the cheapest all-you-can-eat sushi we've ever had, but a fine sushi dining experience nonetheless, especially considering that it's New Haven! My feelings towards sushi palace are best summed up in a restaurant review I read a while back: why waste a meal on a mediocre restaurant. Let me give it to you straight. Do you like sashimi and sushi? Yes? Then stop, and drive as fast as you can in the other direction (and hopefully to Miso). But if you like your sushi drowned in a thick layer of cream cheese or mercilessly wedged between defrosted avocado and cucumber peel, then head over to Sushi Palace. The thing is, Sushi Palace is exactly what is promised when you pull up to its dim and frankly a little gross storefront: unlimited medium quality sushi. I've been to the place three times already and I've been desperate to love it each time. However, it seems like people get so blinded by the huge amounts of sushi being served that they don't realize that the quality of the fish is subpar. The tempura is tasteless and the udon noodle soup is simultaneously greasy and watery. Some of the chicken on a stick type appetizers are practically inedible. The one exception to the slightly above airport sushi quality is the salmon sashimi. Not everything is bad about Sushi Palace. It's generally full and the huge plates of food make it a perfect place to go out with your roomates/family/friends. If you prefer quality over quantity and aren't bowled over by the all-you-can-eat gimmick, steer clear. read more

I used to always go to Sushi Palace with my family for a great lunch meal. I never felt that the fish was not fresh. I enjoy sushi buffets where they make it for you on the spot rather than you walking up to it and it is premade. There is a great variety on what you can order, and I always get other appetizers along with it one unique aspect is that they also serve sashimi which is more expensive, whereas other places I've gone to, they serve rice with fish and do not allow you to waste the rice. The one thing that is a let down is that I feel they predict the food you can handle, and do not always bring everything out either at once or at all. My brother eats a lot of sashimi and although it is all you can eat, they did not serve the number we had written but I guess then you would list need to order more again. Going for the lunch price gets you a better value than dinner, and can honestly last you throughout dinner because I at least cannot control myself at buffets, especially sushi buffet! read more

Considering the price and concept of this restaurant, this place is great. I just came back from having dinner here and it was PACKED on Wednesday night. I went with a group of 6 and got seated within 15 min., even though we made a reservation. Everything that we ordered came super-fast and was delicious. The fish was amazingly fresh, especially the sashimi. The salmon sashimi we had was amazingly buttery, and the thick sliced portions they gave were wonderful. The house salad had the perfect ginger dressing. I ordered a mushroom soup, which had a very unique flavor with crunchy onions on the bottom. Service is a bit spotty, but I have no complaints because seriously, $18 all you can eat amazingness is worth it. I absolutely adore Sushi Palace. It's an incredible deal for pretty quality sushi and sashimi, and really just a great eating experience in a completely different way from my usual 'classier' haunts. The place is cramped, dimly and variably lit, and the parking lot is similarly hard to get into and out of, but it's definitely worth it. I suggest the Hamden roll and the Yummy Maki when you're not eating all the sashimi you want. I also enjoyed the gyoza, the spring roll was not so great, and the tempura is rather satisfying since it's cooked to order. I definitely recommend the seaweed salad as well. Soups were normal; udon as well. Coming with a group of friends is quite fun, and don't forget that you can continue ordering-we usually go about three rounds with ice cream (tiny little scoops of it) as our last. It's cramped, it's idiosyncratic, it's not even that friendly- but it's a great deal and a really really fun time, so I definitely recommend Sushi palace. read more

The sushi is average, not bad, not great; but for $20/person it's a great Saturday night date place. My girlfriend and I went here a few weeks back early in the evening (around 5 p.m.) and got seated right now, but by the time we left (around 6:20 p.m.) it was already packed. Parking was incredibly limited so plan ahead. The decor and ambiance are lacking (a little dark and crowded), but it just works. Food came out quite fast. Overall, if you need your sushi fix, don't want to spend a lot of money, and can put down your fair share of rolls, this is your place. read more

Where to begin with sushi palace. This place is consistently good. You know exactly what you're getting every time. Don't let the C grade on the door deter you, it's good quality sushi. All you can eat for 2 runs around 40 bucks so it's great for a date if you both can really eat. It would have 5 stars if the service was better and the grade on the door was higher. Sushi Palace serves Sashimi as part of their AYCE menu. It's small restaurant where you should have a reservation, or you're going to be waiting a while. They also have a very small parking lot, so finding parking is troublesome. The service is decent and the food is good. They bring out all of the Nigiri, Sashimi, and rolls in a big dish at the same time. The fish here is good quality, with a nice shine to it. It does not need a lot of chewing since the fish is pretty tender. Their hand rolls such as the soft shell crab and the salmon skin are very tasty. Recommend getting a couple of orders of tuna pizza, which is spicy tuna on a fried wonton. read more

So I went to Sushi Palace today around 2:00 for a late lunch with a friend and my brother. I've gone before, but it was prior to my Yelping days so I figured I'd wait until I went again before I give it a review. The price is now 19.95 for all you can eat. We ordered to share. I'm pretty sure we ordered one of each of the special rolls, a spicy tuna roll, spicy tuna hand roll, and a california roll. The boys chose clear soup and I opted for the garden salad. They have decent ginger dressing on their salad. The boys also decided on a spring roll, shrimp tempura and yakitori. I managed to steal a piece of the yakitori and it was excellent! The sushi & rolls came out in record time. Everything was fresh and excellent. The waitstaff is super friendly. If you're into sushi or if you like japanese cuisine, this is a must. It looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, but looks are very deceiving. If you have trouble finding the place look to the left of KFC, they have a "People Love Us On YELP!" sticker in their window. read more

This place is awesome for when you just need to stuff your face with copious amounts of sushi and sashimi. I gave them three stars because their rice is usually undercooked and inconsistently seasoned, and they tend to undercut their soy sauce by using the cheap run of the mill stuff. Yes, this place is legendary. Eat as much freshly prepared sushi, sashimi and other assorted Asian dishes for 17.95. There are some down sides, though. They don't offer every kind of maki roll or sashimi- there is no red snapper on the menu and they don't offer some items that most would consider standard, like yellowtail rolls. What they do carry is always very fresh and made to order. I have never gotten sick from anything I've eaten here, nor have I ever passed because something didn't smell fresh. By the way, don't order more than you're going to eat, or they will omit it from your order without telling you. This is understandable, though- there are a lot of people that would tend to order more than they can actually eat, and fish is not cheap! Oh sushi palace. Long lines, hoards of Yale students that somehow manage to get a ride all the way out there ... such great times. Reasonable pricing too for the decent quality! One tip though, do NOT eat actual sushi if you want the best bang for your buck, they flood it with rice in order to fill your stomach up and make sure to refill your water so it expands in your stomach! They always didn't like me very much here, because all I got was sashimi, and boy was it worth it for those certain times I just had a hankering for some fish heh. It's solid!
