I've been coming here for years, and during my most recent visit, it was noticeable that it was not as good or enjoyable as it used to be. There is really no interaction with the wait staff as they just seem to take your all-you-can-eat forms, and bring you the food. They just seem very stand-offish and sometimes rude. As for the sushi, it isn't the best or worst. Some rolls are a hit or miss, and they definitely vary on freshness. I'd stick to maki rolls and special rolls as well as the eel sushi. The kitchen food is nothing special, anything fried comes out extremely oily, and some of it is pretty dry. The sushi took a while to come out and was missing some items. We repeatedly ordered something and it never came, and the least they could've done was let us know but they did not. But it was understandable that the food came out slowly considering they had a full restaurant and only two sushi chefs. Yes I would recommend if we are talking about the quality of the food, it is okay for a sushi eat all you can restaurant. No I wouldn't recommend...why? First off, all the plates that were being used are paper plates and or Styropor, their prices are not fast food so why serve your food on styropor? Are you still On Covid precautions ? I don't think so because there's a lot of people and there was no distancing with he tables anymore. Especially the hot soup? With plastic spoons? That does not sit well with us. It looks so cheap, especially if you are going out for a date. We paid $70 for the two of us, not bad at all, but. 2nd the table for two is too small they were trying to fit styropor cups of hot soup, plates of appetizers, the sushi plate, the "HOT" tea served on paper cups...it just won't fit. I have been a long time sushi palace Hamden fan for quite sometime now and decided to give the new location a try. The moment I stepped inside I knew things were just not the same. The interior was just shoddy. The finishes were designed for quick construction and cheap. The seating layout was set for optimum capacity. Like feeding pigs at a farm. The staff, honestly, was horrible. I have never used that word for a review but they really went to another level. The staff couldn't care less about your order or if you need more wasabi. And if you did manage to get their attention then they would take ur request with a blank face. So after ur request your not even sure if they acknowledged you. Really really a big shame. A fake smile at least would save me from using the word "horrible". The sushi was good. Probably same caliber as the hamden location. However my friend had an upset stomach (to be polite) and lost everything he enjoyed at this dinner. As usual they get the menu and decide to change it up on their own. Deleting rolls as needed. Bottom line is that this was just a poor way for sushi palace to steer in. They had something unique in Hamden and they have sold out to just turnaround cash. They get a 4 for food, 2 for service so I settled on a 2 because to me service is a big factor in eating Came here with 2 other couples- the lady who tried to take our drink order quickly had to pass off the job to someone else because she didn't understand what we were saying. This is usually something I don't mind but when there are only a few options and u don't know what Sapporo or plum wine is I get aggravated. We ordered a lot of food and there was some Stuff definitely missing from our food once we got it. They also combined a lot of stuff together which luckily we had no vegetarians with us because fish and tofu was plated on top of meat. The food itself tasted very good and we all enjoyed what we got. However it was a chore flagging down servers to get anything!! They literally drop the plates and run. Hope you didn't want a refill of a drink, or more sauce or wasabi cause you won't get it. They could do so much better if they paid a little more attention to service. read more

Great place to go for a cheap sushi fix, as long as you keep your expectations in check. It's all-you-can-eat sushi. That is awesome. I've had great experience with the service here on weeknights. Was also here on a busier late Sunday afternoon, and while slower, the service was still good. That said, I would never come here (or anywhere like it) on a Friday or Saturday night. To me, it just seems obvious that the service wouldn't be good at an AYCE place during primetime, and there are plenty of reviews here to support that. But the service I've got here mid-week has been exceptional. The sushi is very good. Not great, but very good. For the price, it's unbeatable. They have a pretty good variety of special rolls (15 on the menu), which is what I typically order, and most of them are very good. On our most recent visit, two of us put down nine special rolls, 2 glasses of wine, and 2 bottles of hot sake for ~$70 with tip. It's really impossible to not get your money's worth here. You won't get a super high quality culinary experience here. But as I said, if you're looking for a cheap sushi fix, it's superb. read more

I was always traveling far to the Sushi Palace in Hamden which is small and I always feel piled in. Having visited this one in Orange which happens to be much closer to where I live, it is bigger and have expanded my palette. I love this place with how open the seating is compared to the other one. No matter what asain place I have ever gone to the wait staff stares at it's patrons including fast food chinese joints and hibachi so I pay no mind. The food is fresh and tastes great. I used to frequent the Hamden location all the time but this one is much more convenient with plenty of parking since it is in the DSW plaza. There is also parking on the side of the building if you can't find anything in front. I love the concept of made to order all you can eat. I wish they had this in Jersey. Sushi is fresher than the usual sushi buffet where it has been sitting out all day. They have a great selection of sushi and kitchen items. You can also choose from the regular menu and opt out of the all you can eat but where's the fun in that? You can also get takeout from here as well. Just went in for lunch, only a few people inside. Waited 1/2 hour after ordering. It was awkward as the two waitresses were standing around, not very busy. Finally, got up and walked out walked telling the manager I had to get back to work. His response was "OK". My perception is that they were focusing on takeout orders which they seem to have a lot of, and not really helping the customers sitting inside. Their customer service is horrible and sushi is okay and not worth the money. My son didn't like his noodles. We ask the waitress can we replace it with fried rice. The waitress and the manager said we can't send the noodle back cause they already cook it and I have to be charge for it. They told me I could order something else but I would have to be charge for that as well. My son ended up not eating because he didn't like sushi. So we end up leaving after paying for a large bill. My daughter, husband, and I tried the noodle and it was not good. I have never been to a restaurant where I was force to pay for a meal I didn't like. Sushi is okay. It's not worth the money. I have mixed feelings about Sushi Palace, mostly leaning negative. I came here the other day for lunch and it was fairly quiet. There's a good-sized dining area and the restaurant seems to cater largely to local college students. When I got the menu I couldn't believe the incredibly low prices for their lunch specials. Two veggie rolls for $3.95, two "regular" rolls for $5.95, and 2 "special" rolls for $8.95 (I think, if I'm remembering correctly) - which is great when the special rolls here or elsewhere can cost nearly twice as much for just one. The lunch specials do not come with soup or salad as is standard at most places, but you can add on either for a little over a dollar, which still makes Sushi Palace a bargain comparatively. From the moment I walked in the door, service was pretty terrible. I can't recall another restaurant experience where the staff were so incredibly rude and short - and it wasn't just one server, it appeared to be all of them. I was seated next to another table and was shocked at how the staff treated them too - I overheard them wondering if they should leave and could feel the uncomfortable vibes radiating my way. Bad service is enough to ruin a place for anyone, but with ridiculously cheap sushi, I tried to look past it and eagerly awaited my sushi. I went with two regular rolls, one spicy salmon and one salmon avocado. The rolls were mediocre at best - the sushi rice was still really warm bordering hot, which was a little off-putting...plus there was too much rice in general. In all fairness, there was a good amount of filling to help balance the rice-heavy rolls, and the fish tasted very fresh. I'm definitely not running right back to this place, and I'm not sure if I will ever return, but if I'm in the area and want a cheap, quick bite I might consider lunch here again and give it another chance. I think their lunches are a great option for students considering the affordability. Hopefully the service starts to improve because then this place could be a real winner. read more

For $10.00, it should have had more than barely a cup of rice, some shaved carrots, 4 small pieces of broccoli and two slivers of zucchini. Not worth it at all. Also: my husband got a soup with his shrimp teriyaki dinner....not sure what kind it was, but it was only yellow broth with 2 small pieces of sliced scallion. Really?? I enjoy the fresh selection of fish they offer and the speed of which they serve you. This place is always busy but they move quick so don't worry to much if you see a line. Sushi here is fresh and the chefs do a great job with potions and rice to fish ratio. They make great hand rolls as well which it seems like most people don't take advantage of! The Sashimi is fresh as well and offer a good selection of various sashimi. They also offer a bunch of kitchen items such as gyoza, tempura, terryaki, udon, and salads. It's a buffet, so go nuts! but be mindful. Order with your stomach and not your eyes. and don't waste food. read more

This restaurant used to be good but the quality and service is horrendous now. First of all since Covid they give you plastic everything what a waste. Not conscious at all. Secondly their portions have gotten significantly smaller. And they don't give you what you ask for and when you ask for it again they act like they don't know what you said and bring you something else. We ordered the Kani salad and they gave us seaweed salad with one piece of crab in it, When I ask for Hey Connie salad again they gave us another seaweed salad. They put sauces on all of the appetizers now so they get soggy. The sushi taste like old fish. And every single roll tastes the same even though different kinds of fish are supposed to be in them. They drowned them in sauce and Panko as well I'm sure to save money even the Sushi that's not supposed to have Panko has Panko now. These guys have really gone downhill. I was the only person in the entire restaurant, a woman sat me and walked away. It took a few minutes for the guy to get off his phone to come get a drink order... Not so bad but then everyone just disappeared. I mean left the room, except for 2 sushi chefs who appeared to be working on a to go order. To order you must circle what you want on the paper so after waiting for 15 minutes I got up and handed my order to a sushi chef. Finally the young lady came back out and didn't even notice what I had done or how my order was taken. She then continued to be on her cell phone the entire time I sat there. My boyfriend and I come here all the time. We've been sitting here for 45 minutes and have gotten one of our two appetizers. Needless to say, this is the worst service we've gotten here. The service really can be atrocious. The all-you-can-eat sushi price is good and the food is fantastic... Just be prepared for either attitude, a long wait, or both. Update: We left because an hour in we still had no sushi. On our way out they didn't even seem to care, and had the nerve to charge us for the spring roll and crabmeat salad. I'm always very patient at restaurants, but this was disgusting. Waste of gas (15 minute trip) and waste of time. Doubt we will go back. Koi in Ansonia is near our house and the reviews for it are stellar. Update again: We've gone back since I wrote this. (We were on a budget, and took a chance.) Service has improved. We haven't had an experience like previously mentioned since. The staff remains fairly aloof, except for the manager, who recognizes us as regulars and is friendly. Came here the other night for dinner and was disappointed. The overall experience was underwhelming. The food was 'eh' at best. The miso soup arrived lukewarm, was probably just sitting out in the back. The steamed broccoli and 'rock shrimp' were also lukewarm when they arrived. I put that in quotations because it's not your regular shrimp doused in the classic light orange sauce, it's little fried seafood balls. We had to ask a waiter what it was when it arrived to our table! Then the sweet potato in the sweet potato roll was overly fried and unappetizing. On the bright side we did enjoy the Yellow tail and crab nigiri, rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, mango avocado roll and the chicken teriyaki. Those were definitely the highlights of our meal and were very nicely done and presented. Probably the most striking aspect was that service was virtually non-existent. A waiter simply dropped off the little menu and walked away, didn't even bother to give us a pencil or two to check off what we wanted. Another waiter comes over and takes our drink order. Towards the end, we asked a female waitress to give us our check. No one checked in on us with drinks or if the food was good, very odd. Posted a 4 star review in August...and after a couple bad experiences, I'm editing my review (see below) August - I like the one in Hamden too, but find the ambiance in this one so much better. The fish was fresh and the service staff was nice. My only issue was if you order a special roll on the second time around, they substituted crab in place of the salmon or tuna with the other ingredients. I get that it's a cost savings because it's an all you can eat place, but at least tell people that you get one round of special rolls, and the next time you order it, you will get a cheap substitute fish. Other than that, order sashimi instead...I suggest get the first round as special rolls (which are really good), then move onto sashimi for round 2. September - We went for a birthday celebration on Sunday afternoon for lunch...and I'm not sure if it was an off day or not. The orders were consistently wrong; we didn't get drinks for almost 30 minutes after ordering them, BOTH times for refills (mind you, there were only two other tables seated!). The food that we checked off didn't come out at all, and we had to re-order them, so of course, the special rolls (all with salmon, tuna or eel), like I mentioned in my previous review...came out with imitation crab for all of them! Really? The order was wrong AND you substituted fake fish for all of the rolls. While the food might have tasted good, eating non-sushi at Sushi Palace left a VERY bad taste in my mouth and I won't be returning. read more

I typically use this app to read reviews and don't usually post them, but I feel it will be therapeutic and useful to write one in this case. I've been a fan of this place for years. The wait staff has always been inattentive, disorganized and...overall lacking personality or feeling, but the food is good and I realize there is a language barrier. This time, like others, we asked for things we didn't receive but I always know I take that chance when coming there. We finished eating, immediately received the check personally from the manager (there were only three of us but we had a big bill and left a generous tip) and paid. As soon as the waitress snatched our money, we were asked to leave our table because there were a lot of people waiting. We all sort of looked at each other and went, "What?" I've always felt rushed there, and like the wait staff would rather impale me with a chop stick than refill my water, but this really threw me for a loop. I'd have said something to the manager, but since he was the one to deliver my check as soon as he saw our plates start to clear in this feeding factory, I figured my words would be lost. I mean, there were people waiting after all. I took friend from out of town to eat at Sushi Palace a few months ago and she asked to go again when she'll be here in January...but I'm pretty sure the place down the street was much friendlier the last time I went in. When I go to Connecticut to visit some of my extended family, we always go to the Sushi Palace to enjoy a flavorful and abundant meal. The Orange/Milford Sushi Palace is located on a busy Boston Post road in between a Trader Joes and a furniture store. Yet, inside, the atmosphere completely transforms itself into simple, comfortable if not a tad bit upscale. Decorated in blue colors, with darkwood floors and chairs, the atmosphere is simply classy. This allows for an airy yet intimate environment to embark on a feast of Japanese food and sushi. And boy, is it a feast. At a flat rate of 18 dollars (20 dollars on the weekends), you can get kitchen items of some of the Japanese Classics and sushi in an unlimited amount. Given the region of the country and the genre of the cuisine this is an absolute bargain. This adds up for what could possibly be a continuous 2-3 hour meal, so bring your appetite! To begin, I got a seaweed salad and a miso soup. The miso soup is rich and flavor and soothing on the throat. The seeweed salad is fresh tasting. Then, I moved on to the breaded eggplants, chicken on a stick and breaded seafood. Also, I decided to throw on a spring roll or two and some edamame to chomp on. All these came out at appropriate temperatures and successfully served as appetizers for the upcoming main course. Tonight, with two other people, we ordered 75 pieces of sushi for dinner. We decided to include salmons, tofus, red snappers, tunas and crabs. Some of the sushis we had contained nice fillings such as mangos or avocados (of course this is how sushi is supposed to be no matter where you go and I am no expert-but hey, I want to describe). All of the fish was high in quality and tasted extremely fresh. Most importantly, the presentation was exceptional. With each visit, your plate of sushi comes as if it is an art exhibit that is presented right before your eyes. Of course, the natural impulse is for your taste buds to get right in the way. For dessert, I washed my sushi down with a red bean ice cream. I should have decided to get another scoop as the scoop I got was really small. However, even the dessert came with your 20 dollar down payment. Throughout my culinary experience of the night, I sipped constantly on their quality hot tea (refilled attentively by the waiters/waitresses). Add it all up and you get a tremendous value as you are treated to a culinary artistic exhibition in a refined atmosphere. Sushi Palace is great if you're looking for fresh sushi at a decent price. My fiance and I love sushi and we could eat it multiple times a week if we could. However when you think about all of life's expenses, like a mortgage and college tuition, sushi all the time (especially in CT) is not affordable. This is where Sushi Palace comes in! I've eaten at some pretty awesome sushi places throughout CT and Sushi Palace can stand its own in terms of quality fish. For around $20 a person you can get delicious rolls and generous slices of sashimi. I consider this a steal because my fiance and I could easily spend more than $100 at a typical sushi joint. I like this location better than the one in Hamden. Parking is not an issue like in Hamden and the actual restaurant is bigger (and ladies - DSW is next door!) I don't suggest going later evening Thursday - Saturday because the place gets pretty busy. We typically go for an earlier dinner (like 5 -5:30) and the place is pretty dead, but by 6:30 - 7:30, the place is PACKED. Other people have pointed out that service is lacking at Sushi Palace. While I agree that the service can be a little sterile, they do a good job. With it being an all you can eat place, I do not expect Carmin Anthony's service. All I expect is that my water glass/tea cup does not get empty, my empty plates are not left on my table, and my check is brought to me promptly. All in all - Sushi Palace is a no frills kind of place. If you're looking for top-notch service with a fantastic sushi boat presentation, Sushi Palace is not for you and you will be disappointed... Okay, so I went to the Sushi Palace in Orange because I got some mixed reviews so, here is my review: Frankly, the sushi was fresh and pretty tasty. However a few things that bothered me: 1. The attitude of the staff was less than pleasing. The place is relativly narrow and the servers just stand around and stare at the cutomers while they eat. I fould that to take away from the enjoyment of the experince. The decor is modern, and dress is casual. The price is fare, at around $20.00 for the buffet. 2. I was also not impressed that they charge $2.00 for a .50 cent can of soda. I have been to plenty of similar places that had a soda fountain and charged you $2.00 for unlimited refills. So in short, if you son't mind rude service, being stared at or being $2.00 for every cup of soda you consume, than this is the place for you. If not, there are far better places to go. read more

How dare you violate my sacred all-you-can-eat-sushi experience? For shame. We came in on a Friday night, fully anticipating a bit of a wait, and it was a few minutes before someone came over. He said the wait was about 20 minutes. We said, "Okay, sounds good, thank you," and he walked away without another word. We sat down to wait. More people came in behind us, and a different person (the manager, I'm assuming) came out. Apparently, making sure his receipts were properly counted was far more important than serving customers. Now there are 15 people in the front waiting. Finally, he starts taking people back, but we realize he's now asking for people's names, and no one had bothered to take ours. So we stepped back up and said we had been waiting for 15 minutes and wanted to make sure he had our name, since everyone else waiting had now come in long after us. He said we were next, so we sat back down. Then, he took 12 of the 15 people who came in after us. At this point, 20 minutes had become 40. We didn't wait to see what happened to the next three people, because if the service was that terrible just to get seated, what were the odds we were going to get what we ordered, and get it before midnight? Such a sad memory of failed sushi - now little ghosts of dragon rolls float around my head and there's nothing to be done about it. read more

I'm a big fan of Sushi X in West Haven, and use that as a benchmark for these types of places (full disclosure: I haven't made it to X in over a year, so I'm thinking of it circa 2010). I'll give you the positives first on Sushi Palace: I think the quality of the fish was pretty good, maybe even slightly better than X. And I thought all the rolls we tried were quite decent. You would think that would be pretty big, but Palace still adds up to be a lesser experience for me than Sushi X. Why? - The kitchen stuff isn't even close - it's far better at X. Grilled calamari was bad, and shumai not much better. - The service is much friendlier and personable at X. The service here bordered on sullen. - The place is kind of stylish, but has a cold and dark feel to it. For some reason all the blinds were shut in the middle of the day. - One of the specials for the day was "crispy spicy salmon". Sounded intriguing. Well, it turned out to be regular spicy salmon on a Ritz cracker. For real. So overall, it was OK. I wouldn't make a special trip to come here, but if in the area I would conceivably eat here again. read more
